Notre Dame Over 7 wins (-110) 2 units

Notre Dame's problems last year were plentiful and it was entirely on the offense or at least they were so bad, you couldn't blame the defense because they were never in the game to begin with. 55+ sacks against last year and footage from the Oline play against Michigan made me  then :mj16: and then :hah: .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLOt...-max=2007-09-19T20:43:00-07:00&max-results=20

It was stunning how 5 guys could all wiff against a 4-man rush. But then as the season wore on, it wasn't just the Oline, it was a frosh and soph QB who never had their timing down and young WR's who couldn't get off of routes. There was improvement last year at the of the season in the QB and WRs, but it's not being talked about because everybody stopped watching.

The Oline was young and Weis tried to develop a spread for the GT game and while it looked awful, running out of that spread was one of the most successful quarters for ND in the first half of the year. Once they went back to a base offense, the line looked clueless and never fully recovered.

But, by everyone's account, ND has 3 top 10 recruiting classes in a row. Some other schools that have performed that feat are U$C, Florida, Texas, LSU, Ohio State and Michigan. While the Junior class has to be downgraded because two top 10 QBs have left, they still have the foundation in the Lines and their LBs and their secondary, WRs and RBs are stacked with talent. The ND fans have pointed to Ty's lack of recruiting as being the reason for 2007's woes and it has been mocked at by most journalists, but anyone who can take the time to see the types of players that they were getting, the gaping holes that were left on both sides of the line know that it's true. Also, it's fitting to note that Washington has exactly ZERO committed recruits in their class of 2009.

While 2007 saw mourning in South Bend.

In bold below are the games that they possibly could lose - I think they have five wins in the bag. They'll be favored vs. Michigan, Purdue, possibly UNC, Pitt and BC. The potential losses I see are UNC, MSU, Pitt and USC and they could take 3 of the 3.

Sat, Sep 6 San Diego State 3:30 pm --
Sat, Sep 13 (18) Michigan 3:30 pm -- (First Road Game for new coach, new system, new QB)
Sat, Sep 20 at Michigan State 3:30 pm --
Sat, Sep 27 Purdue 3:30 pm --
Sat, Oct 4 Stanford 2:30 pm --
Sat, Oct 11 at North Carolina TBA --
Sat, Oct 25 at Washington 8:00 pm --
Sat, Nov 1 Pittsburgh 2:30 pm --
Sat, Nov 8 at (10) Boston College TBA -- (O'Brien left for greener pastures for a reason)
Sat, Nov 15 at Navy 12:00 pm --
Sat, Nov 22 Syracuse 2:30 pm --
Sat, Nov 29 at (3) USC 8:00 pm --

I think the Irish go 10-2 during the year and fall into the more traditional Weis season of a back to back smack down against SC and a BCS team. I think worst case scenario this year in 7-5.

Go Irish!! Beat the Aztecs!!! (Scheduling SDSU is just one last FU from Ty)

To win this over, ND has to be 8-3 after 11 games, they will be huge dogs in that last one at
USC. 12 games for everyone this yr. and most will
have 7 or 8 home games, ND has 6. To think they
can win a few road games is pretty suspect considering they only won 3 games last yr. They are better but 3-9 to 8-4 is quite a jump.

Ole Miss Over 5.5 wins 1 unit

I liked Ole Miss to surprise this year due to the proven game day coaching of Houston Nutt and the recruiting acumen on Orgeron - but now everyone's come out and said that Ole Miss is an SEC darkhorse, but I'm not sure if anyone defines what that means exactly because they're almost always ranked last in the West.

[All rankings from Phil Steele] Their Senior class was ranked 7th in recruiting in the SEC and their Junior class was ranked 6th (17th overall) and they've added QB Jevan Snead (#4 ranked QB) and RB Enrique Davis (#4 ranked RB) who aren't included in those rankings because they originally signed with other schools. Their lines return substantially intact.

Their schedule looks like - almost certain wins in bold:

Aug. 30, 2008 Memphis 6:00 pm ET
Sept. 6, 2008 at Wake Forest (ABC) 3:30 pm ET
Sept. 13, 2008 Samford TBA
Sept. 20, 2008 Vanderbilt TBA
Sept. 27, 2008 at Florida TBA
Oct. 4, 2008 South Carolina TBA
Oct. 18, 2008 at Alabama TBA
Oct. 25, 2008 at Arkansas TBA
Nov. 1, 2008 Auburn TBA
Nov. 15, 2008 La.-Monroe 6:00 pm ET
Nov. 22, 2008 at LSU TBA
Nov. 28, 2008 Miss. State (Ray/Com) 12:30 pm ET

I see 4 likely wins and Ole Miss just needs to get 2 more to win this bet. Arkansas and Miss State look likely and they've proven they can play with the best in the SEC and come up just short. With Nutt on gameday, some of those close losses have to turn into close wins.

BBC,

like the Ole Miss pick. Think they break even at 6-6, and have a good shot at 7-5 and a bowl a la Miss St last year. Think the Snead/Nutt combo is good for an SEC upset.

As a Michigan fan, I must object to your ND pick....even if I think your judgement is pretty sound. Think the Irsh will at least have a winning record.

By the way, according to sportsbook....ND is -3.5 against Michigan; -4.5 against Pitt and +2 against UNC. Those are your major swing games that will separate this team from 9-3 or 6-6.

BBC - ND finally has alot of talent in the skill positions, but I'm still worried about the youth on the DLine. Pat Kuntz is back and I. Williams was a nice surprise, but other than that we're expecting freshman to step up. I'm thinking 8 wins is a possibility... Thank god for the easy schedule. BTW - I've heard that M. Floyd is the real deal... I still can't believe D. Walls is out for the year.

Yep - me, too - It's not a position where experience counts a lot, but strength and size of 18-year olds going up against 21 year olds means a great deal. I think they're going to get a lot of help with the blitzes from the second and third level.

Lines are both suspect until further notice, but I've got faith this year that I didn't have last year.

Blue Chip,

ND has to be better. Not sure how much better.

I'd say that the keys are:
1) Pretty managable schedule. No super-powers, except USC.
2) Revenge games. Some pretty good spots where ND will HAVE TO play their asses off: mich, Navy, and USC. If they have anything, nd plays their balls off in those games.

ND's front 7 is going to be awfully soft this year, and the returning DB's haven't exactly been stellar in the past. They had better hope the offense is ready to carry the load.
