Tile Question...

Hi Boys....It's been a while. I've been recovering from my appendectomy. I need you guys' help on a tile question.

I am going to re-tile part of my house. Is it better to get tile from Home Depot and have one of their contractors install it, or is it better to find your own contractor? It's a pretty small job. I've heard that the contractors Home Depot uses suck. Also, is that the best place to get a good deal, or better to get from some tile warehouse place?

Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Bartster...

Hi Bartster...

Sorry I haven't written back to your last email. All is well. My appendix leaked so I got pretty sick and was in the hospital for three days. After they let me go, I've recovered really fast. Actually worked from home the rest of the week and back to work last week before the holiday.

I hope your Thanksgiving was great. I'l shoot you an email later today or tomorrow!

Kelly

Kelly, I know a guy here in the Dallas area that does tile. He does it for pretty cheap. He just finished renovating a home in Highland Village last week so I know he's not doing anything right now. Let me know if you want him to give you a price.

We went to a reputable tile dealer and picked out what we wanted. I put the tile in myself but while we we picking it out they gave us a list of installers that the recomended. I wouldn't go the Home Depot route. The old saying goes "You get what you pay for". GL.

Ok, but I can buy the tile at Home Depot and then have someone else install it, right? Do you just call someone up and they come look at it and give you an estimate?

check home depot for sales on tile..great sale just a few weeks back on discontinued expensive tile..great price..

check craigs list for somebody doing sidework..christmas time and good tile guys doing work on the side to pick up extra cash for kids and wives to enjoy christmas..

the real sharp guys on craigs list will answer your e-mail or call and give you recent customers names and numbers to get feed back on their work..

glad you are ok..

craigslist can solve a lot of problems with repairs if you go about the right way..

all homedepot contractors are subs who not only make their profit but a small profit for the store as well..especially w/tile--carpet and windows.:scared

i have friends who sub for homedepot..and neighbor who subed their for many years..

any questions on tile I will be glad to ask him..he has been bugging me to tile in my house for years..

not the way to go...

i know of people who have had problems with home depot's contractors & had problems getting home depot to stand behind their contractors...

what i would do kelly is speak to frriends & business associates who have had tile work done & get referrals from them.....& as contractors they may be able to get the tile cheaper from home depot....& it's just my opinion but as a woman living alone i would never get somebody from criag's list or any other list...

good luck with this & glad you are feeling better...

have watched expert tile guys work..truly an art for a great finished product..

make sure the installers uses spacers..anyone who tells you they can eyeball tile is full of schyt..

never perfectly straight by eyeball..

check stone mountain in your area for good buys on reduced priced and discontinued tile as well..
figure number of tiles[real easy to do] and when ordering figure on 5 or 6 extra for replaced later for scuff and sctratch..good tile man will pass all thios info on to you.

kelly...a word to the wise....if you are a single female,i`d have a boyfriend or male friend available at your house when any contractor comes to give you an estimate....

i don`t know a thing about craig`s list...maybe it`s very safe and all the contractors that list there are reputable and dependable...

it`s a little dicey to be an attractive single female inviting strange contractors into your home to give estimates...

don`t mean to harsh your buzz...i`m sure you`re aware that there are lots of bizarre characters running around...

type in tile installers...

i know you`d like to save a few bucks....better to get a few estimates from known, reputable companies....

i agree with GW on that aspect.

I Wouldn't attempt trying to do it yourself either. I helped a friend install tile in his kitchen... it was a bitch and I told him i didn't sign up for this shit.

it is an art form...

Installed flooring for 10 yrs, decided to have a different career so I could walk in my later stages. Still install on the side on occasion for the extra :toast: money. Anyway, Home depot will have nice prices, and probably a smaller selection of product, tile places may be a little pricier, but a bigger selection. I'd check around to see if you can find a decent installer thru friends, or family first. I'd go through HD as a last resort. Tiling is fairly easy, especially if its a small job. I beleive HD installers still have to be insured and all that stuff, they should still know what they're doing. If its a small job, should only take a few hours to install, and back the next day for an hour to grout. GL with your renovation.:)

Justin, I agree with you. It sucks, I helped a friend do his kitchen(didn't make it to the actual laying tile part). I said enough when we started tearing up the flooring he was taking out. We had one of those long scraper things you use to scrape up old tile. I would much rather pay someone to do that then do it myself. I ended up grabbing a beer and laying by the pool. He ended up hiring some mexicans his mom recommended. They came in and banged it out quick.

Great info, thanks everyone. The first step will be to pick out the tile. I am going to do that this weekend. Then, we will go from there. I am not going to use Home Depot to install it, I've heard too many bad stories about them and their refusal to guarantee their contractors' work.

Definitely always have a guy there when workers come over. I'm not the trusting type, so no worries on that front...

I may have more questions, so the thread will pop up again after I pick the tile.

Thanks again,

Kelly

I talk with lots of people on here and have met several. Why is it so bad to talk to Kelly too? Pretty amusing. And by the way Kelly, my wife says hi too. Juveniles
