Mother-in-law dies as cop delays Ryan Moats in the hospital parking lot....

What a fucking surprise.

PLANO, Texas - A police officer was put on desk duty after pulling over an NFL player rushing to see his dying mother-in-law in the hospital and holding him in the hospital parking lot as she died.

Dallas police officer Robert Powell stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats' SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center during the early hours of March 18 after Moats rolled through a red light. Moats and his family had gotten a call saying his mother-in-law was dying.

Video from a dashboard camera inside the officer's vehicle, obtained by Dallas-Fort Worth station WFAA-TV, revealed an intense exchange in which the officer threatened to jail Moats.

He ordered Moats' wife, Tamishia Moats, to get back in the SUV, but she ignored him and rushed inside the hospital to see her mother, Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, and was by her side when she died a short time later. She had breast cancer.

"Get in there,'' said Powell, yelling at 27-year-old Tamishia Moats, as she exited the car. "Let me see your hands!''

"Excuse me, my mom is dying,'' Tamishia Moats said. "Do you understand?''

Moats explained that he waited until there was no traffic before proceeding through the red light and that his mother-in-law was dying, right then.

Moats couldn't find his insurance paperwork, and was desperate to leave.

"Listen, if I can't verify you have insurance...,'' Officer Powell said. "My mother-in-law is dying,'' Moats interrupted.

As they argued, the officer got irritated. "Shut your mouth,'' the officer said. "You can either settle down and cooperate or I can just take you to jail for running a red light.''

The officer later told Moats, "I can screw you over. I would rather not do that. You obviously will dictate everything that happens; and right now, your attitude sucks."

Powell also ignored the pleas of two nurses and a Plano police officer, all of whom tried to convince Powell to let Moats go into the hospital, WFAA said.

By the time the 26-year-old NFL player received a ticket and a lecture from Powell, 25, at least 13 minutes had passed.

When he and Collinsworth's father entered the hospital, they learned Collinsworth was dead, The Dallas Morning News reported in Thursday's editions.

The Moatses, who are black, said they can't help but think that race might have played a part in how Powell, who is white, treated them.

"I think he should lose his job,'' said Ryan Moats, a Dallas native.

"For him to not even be sympathetic at all, and basically we're dogs or something and we don't matter ? it basically shocked me," Moats told WFAA.

Powell was placed on disptach duty pending an investigation. The ticket issued to Moats was dismissed, Lt. Andy Harvey told WFAA-TV.

"There were some things that were said that were disturbing, to say the least,'' he told the Dallas Morning News.

Powell told police officials he believed he was doing his job, said Dallas Police Assistant Chief Floyd Simpson.

This story is a prime example of why thinking people have a huge problem with the majority of cops. Little power-hungry, Napoleonic, douchebags.

Its just beyond crazy...its in an ER parking lot for Christ sake.

The guy wasnt doing 120 mph weaving in & out of traffic putting everyone in harms way....it was late at night on what appeared to be very empty roads.

Dude was even stopping at the lights/signs & then rolling threw them, its not like he was just going nutz.

Then the assholes just keeps him there for 15 BSing while his wife is alone w/ her dying mother....damn the nurses even came out & said she was coding....

Focking scumbag cop.

Cop did the right thing pulling him over but should have ecsorted them into the hospital and then got the story.

Cop is an aishole though.

What disturbed me also was when Moats was told he could go into the hospital where his mother inlaw might have had only seconds left- he just sauntered in as if he had no care in the world. Thats what the video shows.

He's a running back yet he just casually walks up.

What a sad sad evening for Texas.

I guess next time one of you thugs "jacks" a car, you can just roll to the emergency room now, and run off free as a bird?

Sweet deal for you guys!

You better believe is my mom or wife is dying in the hospital & has minutes to live, I wont stop for anything to get to the hospital to be with them.

Fuck any cop that tries to stop me, they will have to shoot me.

Certainly not. You can find fault in almost every video you look at of a felony stop.

The thing is......the driver did almost nothing right, and no one seems to care about that.

Did he jack the car?

That's the point. When you are persuing a vehicle....you don't know why they are running from you. You certainly don't think it's for good reasons, and you don't take any chances once they do pull over.

You better believe is my mom or wife is dying in the hospital & has minutes to live, I wont stop for anything to get to the hospital to be with them.

Fuck any cop that tries to stop me, they will have to shoot me.

And they just might. You amaze any normal thinking human being.

It's real easy to play this shit out two weeks after it happened!

Let me ask you brainiacs this:

How many hundreds of felony police stops do you imagine happen in any given week in this country? Of those stops, do you think the majority of the drivers who fail to stop for a cop flashing his lights, and blairing his siren have "honest intentions", or do you think they are "running from the cops"?

So, you can talk all tough at your keyboard about how you "woulda done this and woulda done that" and I really don't give a fuck. The law says you pull over.

Now you finally do, and he is supposed to listen to your sob story? Good luck!

Always the bad-assed cop.

But, back to our sad story:

These guys hear tales of woe every single stop! Some real.....some bullshit. But, this officer had to be wondering, "What did these people do that they are running from me?"

When you say, "My mama's dying!"......I'm sure that registers, but YOU have put him in a position of having to "check you out", now!

Seriously. What if these people just robbed a store, and used that line to attempt at getting away? The two passengers managed to get away! He didn't go Rambo on them! In fact, he didn't go ape shit on the driver, either.

But, in a state of "holy shit! we gotta cover our asses!".......his department threw him right under the bus. Rather than saying the officer pulled over a fleeing driver, and detained him for questioning, they took the "black folks gonna be suin' our lilly white asses" approach, and said, "we train to be sympathetic.....blah, blah, blah."

And why does race always have to be brought into play? Every story I have seen on this mentions, not-so-soflty, "the family was black, while the officer was white".

The only reason this is getting ANY time at all, is because this person died. Bad timing.

If these folks woulda been at her bedside, instead of driving there......

Well, that's another issue.

Well, that's another issue.

while reading your response, all I could think of was "YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME"

it's so nice to know exactly how you would respond to this situation...
I, on the other hand, can tell you that I really don"t know how I will react to it if it ever arises. I believe the mother in-law had cancer for a while. it's nice to know that you would be at her bedside the whole time, no matter how long this tragedy unfolds. I'm not sure I could do that. remaining calm while the cop dragged this out, 13 minutes I believe, I give you credit for that...

I admit that I would have said to write the ticket and follow me in if you have to, but there is absolutely no way I wouldn't have gone right in to be with her. not saying this is the right thing to do, but also saying that I might not be thinking as clearly as I should be in that situation...

has nothing to do with typing behind a computer screen, honestly saying this is the way it would be...

The cop was being a prick, plain and simple.

He got the guy's license and insurance information and checked him out.

Why make him sit there during the whole ticket writing process while he was in an emotional, emergency situation?

If you're going to arrest him, fine, but he already determined he wasn't going to do THAT. Why make him wait after he already let the wife and SIL go?

He was being a PRICK!

"the bunker"
i`m not taking a stand here...i see some valid points on both sides of this one....

strangely enough, the timing`s odd because i just put up the thread about pet euthansia...i had something similar happen about a year or 2 ago...

i was rushing our diabetic cat to the vet after her sugar dropped to what i later found out was 0.....a cop stopped me,i jumped out of the car(stupid,i know),and i yelled back to him that i had a pet that was in diabetic shock and i was rushing her to the vet...

he told me to go ahead...never asked for anything...i was extremely grateful because time was of the essence...

in moats` situation,i would have stopped and given the cop my wallet and asked him to follow me into the hospital parking lot...

moats didn`t stop..that`s why the cop was pissed and probably apprehensive...and probably for good reason..

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=7141883

instances like this one are why cops have to be extremely careful...

still, once in the parking lot,it looked like an elderly woman was in the car with moats and his wife......

at least the cop let moats` wife go in the hospital...i`m glad he did that

very unfortunate episode...

First of all when the fk did all you men start loving mother in laws. Wtf is that all about?

And again Moats didnt go running into the hospital. He sauntered as if eating a hot dog.

The black and white thing (racism) is getting old and abused. So lets drop that crap.

The cop was a dick but he also was doing his job. After the fact we can attack him and say well he should have let them all run into the hospital.

Most cases like this involve laws being broken and what cop would be stupid enough to risk his life by saying 'hey I trust you' to every Tom Dick and Jack
