George Washington's first Proclamation as President made this abundantly clear. On the day that Congress finished its work on the First Amendment, it called on President George Washington to issue a Proclamation to the people of the United States to thank God for the freedoms we enjoy. A week and a day later the President's opening paragraph in his Proclamation said: "Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor . . ." Note 2. The words "to obey His will" are fatal to any suggestion that George Washington and the framers of our Constitution believed in "secularism." In America, religious values influence government policy through the vote of the people. :sadwave: :sadwave:

Since a quote from Washington got you going, here's some quotes you might enjoy from our Founding Fathers.

"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear."

-Thomas Jefferson

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."

-Benjamin Franklin

"I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life I absented myself from Christian assemblies."

-Benjamin Franklin

"Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst."

-Thomas Paine

"As to the book called the bible, it is blasphemy to call it the Word of God. It is a book of lies and contradictions and a history of bad times and bad men."

-Thomas Paine

"The study of theology, as it stands in the Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on no principles; it proceeds by no authority; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing; and it admits of no conclusion."

-Thomas Paine

"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistant that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel."

-Thomas Paine

"There are matters in the Bible, said to be done by the express commandment of God, that are shocking to humanity and to every idea we have of moral justice...."

-Thomas Paine

"In those parts of the world where learning and science have prevailed, miracles have ceased; but in those parts of it as are barbarous and ignorant, miracles are still in vogue."

-Ethan Allen

"If not an absolute atheist, he had no belief in a future existence. All his ideas of obligation or retribution were bounded by the present life."

-John Q Adams on Thomas Jefferson

"The Christian God is a being of terrific character -- cruel, vindictive, capricious, and unjust."

-Thomas Jefferson

"I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature."

-Thomas Jefferson

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State."

-Thomas Jefferson

"All persons shall have full and free liberty of religious opinion; nor shall any be compelled to frequent or maintain any religious institution."

-Thomas Jefferson

"Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man."

-Thomas Jefferson

"It is between fifty and sixty years since I read the Apocalypse, and I then considered it merely the ravings of a maniac."

-Thomas Jefferson

"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."

-Thomas Jefferson

"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole carloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity."

-John Adams

"The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries."

-James Madison

"The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy"

-George Washington

Gary,

Frankly you're wasting your time. It's highly unlikely that 'wilson' has even heard of any of those that you quoted, much less is familiar with them.

Well, maybe Ethan Allen, who he would recognize as a furniture icon.

You are probably right.

Believe it or not, the whole "Christian Nation" thing kind of gets me going. The guys that founded our country using the principle of Separation of Church and State isn't good enough for these knuckleheads.

It always has to evolve into insults with Kosar.

I guess a 4' midget with more chins than a chinese phone book has taken his share of abuse. I guess he feels he has to strike back at somebody...Go get'em WEE-man!!

As for gorilla man:

Henry Laurens -- "I had the honor of being one who framed the Constitution. In order effectually to accomplish these great constitutional ends, it is especially the duty of those who bear rule to promote and encourage respect for God and virtue."

President John Quincy Adams directly addresses the Ten Commandments -- "The law given from Sinai was a civil and municipal code as well as a moral and religious code. These are laws essential to the existence of men in society and most of which have been enacted by every Nation which ever professed any code of laws. Vain indeed would be the search among the writings of secular history to find so broad, so complete and so solid a basis of morality as the Ten Commandments lay down."

Most of the founding fathers were part of freemasons, which encouraged a man to pursue his own beliefs within his soul.

I have never said that the federal gov't should ever dictate a religious belief on any citizen. However, when you start eliminating the existence of Christianity...principles and values will cease to exist.:violin: :violin:

Lotta people interested in my 'stats' around here recently . Kinda creepy, but i'm 5'7", 150-155 lbs, green eyes and I have a full head of lovely brown hair that you would drool over.

I like long walks on the beach, of course, and a fine wine shared over great conversation.

You game, wilson?

Yeah, Wilson posts a couple of quotes, and gmroz posts more than 20 on the topic - and you cheer on the genius who is getting inundated with logic and information on the subject...

Does it really make you feel smarter or better to promote the person comparatively falling so far behind in logic and examples? I realize in most cases that's your usual position on things, but this one seems particularly worth calling out. But in your world, I guess one good "liberal tards" analysis makes it all equal?

Have you applied for press secretary in Weasals administration yet?
