Disputed isle in Bay of Bengal disappears into sea

NEW DELHI ? For nearly 30 years, India and Bangladesh have argued over control of a tiny rock island in the Bay of Bengal. Now rising sea levels have resolved the dispute for them: the island's gone.
New Moore Island in the Sunderbans has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said.
"What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra.
Scientists at the School of Oceanographic Studies at the university have noted an alarming increase in the rate at which sea levels have risen over the past decade in the Bay of Bengal.
Until 2000, the sea levels rose about 3 millimeters (0.12 inches) a year, but over the last decade they have been rising about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) annually, he said.
Another nearby island, Lohachara, was submerged in 1996, forcing its inhabitants to move to the mainland, while almost half the land of Ghoramara island was underwater, he said. At least 10 other islands in the area were at risk as well, Hazra said.
"We will have ever larger numbers of people displaced from the Sunderbans as more island areas come under water," he said.
Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of 150 million people, is one of the countries worst-affected by global warming. Officials estimate 18 percent of Bangladesh's coastal area will be underwater and 20 million people will be displaced if sea levels rise 1 meter (3.3 feet) by 2050 as projected by some climate models.
India and Bangladesh both claimed the empty New Moore Island, which is about 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) long and 3 kilometers (1.5 miles) wide. Bangladesh referred to the island as South Talpatti.
There were no permanent structures on New Moore, but India sent some paramilitary soldiers to its rocky shores in 1981 to hoist its national flag.
The demarcation of the maritime boundary ? and who controls the remaining islands ? remains an open issue between the two South Asian neighbors, despite the disappearance of New Moore, said an official in India's foreign ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on international disputes.
Bangladesh officials were not available for comment Wednesday.

To use some of the more mental midget analogies in here, as BP pointed out, this is going to be the first March on record in Minny that there was NO snow. It's been warm and temperate for quite a while now, son is practicing baseball on his field for the first time ever at the school, at this point.

So, I guess, to use the logic of some here (ad nauseum), global warming is alive and well, in an area that really can show a difference.

If you don't agree with me, can you please refrain from posting this kind of BS from now on?

Well, I am sorry, are you the measuring stick to what a higher level of inteligence is? FFS take a joke would you.

I do believe when the blizzards were hitting it was you and others were saying, it's Winter, it snows, so what? Hey, it's Spring, the Sun is out, the snow melts.

I hear ya about spring being here but spring doesn't come to Minnesota unit mid April.. We are 6 weeks ahead of schedule.. Does that mean there is global warming.. No it does not, but it is just as good of a argument as the ones against global warming when there was snow in winter.. I personally don't know if there is global warming but I would tend to side with scientists than some of the neocons..

One of the coldest winters here in Jax on record. We still have not hit 80 degrees this spring. The latest since theY started keeping records.

When I was a kid we could ice skate on the ponds and lakes in the Baltimore/Washington area for a minimum of 3 months during the winter. At times you could even drive a car on the ponds and lakes. Now? I doubt they can get one full weekend of ice skating in during the entire winter. And this past winter was supposed to be one of the worst. Maybe for snowfall but I bet not ice skating on the lakes. I don't know for sure because I haven't been there all winter and I didn't ask anybody but weasie might know.

I see Gary so your best shot after record cold winter --and gore crews getting caught cooking the books --is a rock that disappeared in the Bay of Bengal :SIB

--carry on :)

No, I'm not the measuring stick - I suppose you could relax, too. I don't consider you a mental midget, so if you took that personally, it wasn't directed at you. There are some who posted every time a pointed Drudge headline about cold and snow and related it to global warming... and a couple who had fun with it, which I understand. Some have wide eyes and believe temporary displays have bigger meaning.

As for spring thaws, the no snow March is historical here - all time stuff. So, it is a bit different. Which was part of my joke...

Oh yes that is for sure there are many that are... I won't deny that but not all of them are. I know an old scientist who has nothing to gain by this and he believes in it.. I myslef need a little bit more time..

Two issues
--If given choice between global warming or cooling what would be the unanimous choice.

-Just how radical is this admin--

Who in their wildest dream would think a gov agency (EPA) would deem one of the gases (co2) necessary for life as a pollutant.

I don't think anyone would consider normal levels of CO2 as a threat.. O2 is a gas that is also necessary for life. If your body has too much of it you can die. Our atmosphere does not have harmful levels of O2..

You really think Obama is a radical? He is not radical enough. He's continued the war you boys like. What has he done to display that he is a true liberal? Anytime now.

We hate war, especially when POLITICIANS USE our soldiers for political gain.
