I have a 7 year old Kenmore side by side that has been a pile of shit. 6 months after we bought it the compressor went out on it, that was covered under warranty. Now the dampner control, this thing apparently controls the cold air from the freezer to the frig. $380 to fix it. Should I say screw it and get a new frig or pay to get this one fixed? I can get a new Whirlpool side by side at Sears for around $650 after the state energy star efficient rebate and a 10% discount.

What's everyone's frig experiences namebrand wise? Thanks in advance for the help.

Why throw good money after bad. I wouldn't put almost $400 into a 7 year old fridge. Put the extra $250 into a new unit and cut your losses.

I agree, getting a new one makes much more sense. Anyone have good luck with Whirlpool?

They're all junk now. I remember the days when a refrigerator was supposed to and did last a lifetime. WTF happened? I'm gonna need a new one too and it's only 5 years old.

There's really only two main manufacturers..either electrolux or whirlpool. Whirlpool owns Maytag, Amana, amongst other brands. I work for the newest whirlpool plant that makes fridges and freezers and it's basically the same compressor and everything else no matter what the brand name.

Agreed Jack. I have my grandpa's old Philco in my garage, use it as my beer frig. I'm not sure when that thing was built but I'm pretty sure its about 45 years old and it still works fine. I'll have to get a picture of it uploaded.

Hey Sylvan, what exactly is the problem? Stuff in the freezer not getting frozen and the stuff in the fridge not cold enough?

I'll take a shot here. Snap off the front grill and take a look. If the coils are grey and fuzzy that could be the problem.

Never heard of a damper control.

Everything on the frig side is freezing, no matter what the temp is set at. The dampner control, not sure I'm spelling that right, regulates the cold air from the freezer to the frig. So basicalliy, I guess its overloading the frig side. My friggin milk was frozen solid the other morning. Had to go to work Cheerioless! Sons a bitches.

That's a newer model than Jack was talking about his you had to put in a block of ice to keep things cold.

Taking another shot here. I'm guessing the thing is unplugged now and defrosting plug it in tomorrow and cross your fingers. Maybe the damper was frozen or stuck. Hey you never know and you have the Philco backup. GL!
