been spending less and less time on the horses recently, and continuing that this weekend. have spent almost no time on the derby, but i'm looking to beat the fav (journalism). playing some combo of the 2, 5, 12, 18, and 21. maybe another one or two underneath, if i get crazy.

looking forward to lots of mint juleps. even made mint julep ice cream, which i've been doing 10-12 years now.

good luck with your plays, and enjoy the chaos of 19 horses sharing the track.

Hopefully hedgehog and mcity bring the chips and salsa.
probably not.

1) i already made salsa.

2) we have standards. this is at the door, except instead of inches, it's IQ.

No way im betting Journalism at 7/2 in a 19 horse field. This aint a 5 horse field like he's been running in this is a totally different ballgame for him.

I'm pulling for my guy Loveberry i think the horse has a legit chance at top 3

Will play some trifectas and that's about it and maybe the 19 WPS

I've never had a mint julep.
do you like bourbon? although we even have a few non-bourbon drinkers who enjoy the juleps. they just get 'em a little sweeter.

since i'm the one making the juleps, i use a trick to make them simple. last night, i made a simple syrup and then threw in a bunch of mint leaves. and just before we start the party i shave a bunch of ice. then, to make the juleps, it's just fill half a cup with the ice, throw in a shot (or two) of woodford, add a couple spoons of the minty syrup, and stir it up. they go down ridiculously easy.

the missus is cleaning the floors, so i'm staying out of the way, which gives me a few more minutes to take another quick look at the race.

at this point, gotta assume we're gonna get another wet track. of the horses i'm using on top, i think the 5 (american promise) is the only one to win on a wet track. it will be interesting to see if they send him. it's not a bad idea to be on the lead on a muddy track, but as we saw in the oaks yesterday that certainly doesn't guarantee a win. i won't have time to pay attention to the rest of the card, but anyone who is... keep an eye on what the jocks are doing. usually at churchill when it's wet, the rail sucks. most of them know that, and will try to avoid getting stuck down there. obviously that means wide trips. in a race with 19 horses, wide trips can get WIDE. although with a good mix of speed and closers today, you might not see anyone crazy wide in the first turn.

i think i'll use the 7 underneath a little, as well.

i'm leaving the 19 out, but he has a great pattern and no reason to think he won't run well (for him). i think he's just too slow coming in. he'll need to really jump up to be competitive today. but, hey, i've been wrong about a race or two in my life.

Nope. Back in my college days we drank almost exclusively Old Grand Dad but I got away from it. Then I became a beer guy for many years and in my old age became a vodka guy. Never really been one for mixed drinks, usually drink straight up. Even just right out of the bottle. But I've calmed down quite a bit in the last few years. I don't drink hardly at all anymore.

Enjoy.

thank you. funny how this party has changed over the years. it started as just a stupid drunkfest (big shock!). now everybody is older (another big shock!). we mostly just hang out, play some cornhole, then watch the race. most everybody is gone by 8.

you gonna bet the race, jack?

I’ll be splashing a couple of bucks on the derby and will finalize my plays an hour or so before post time and will share here for anyone that would like to lose some money along side me 🤣

Lots of double digit long shots hitting in the slop that is Churchill downs today.
None of my long shots, of course, but plenty have hit the wire 1st
