I can’t even imagine paying that for a drink.

And forget it if they mix their booze. NOBODY can identify their favorite if it's mixed.

Mostly just a status symbol , with some exceptions, but if you're drinking 400 WhistlePig your doing ok.
My sister always made fun of me for drinking Smirnoff ($9.99 a quart here) so I blind tested her with her Stoli ($30-$40 a quart) and she preferred the Smirnoff. But, then she came back with "Smirnoff will give me a hangover".

She continues with her Stoli, to this day, AND she mixes it with something orange.

No one can ever be wrong. See also the political forum!! Some Russian Smirnoff history below:

Smirnoff began in 1864 Moscow when Pyotr Smirnov pioneered charcoal filtration, dominating the market as the Tsar’s official vodka supplier. Following the Russian Revolution, the brand was nationalized and Vladimir Smirnov fled, resurrecting the brand as "Smirnoff" (French spelling) in Europe, later selling U.S. rights in 1933. It became a global sensation by the 1950s as a "white whiskey" mixer.

Grey Goose is absolutely a marketing gimmick.

https://www.choicehacking.com/2023/07/13/psychological-marketing-genius-sydney-frank/

Short version...

Grey Goose is considered a "triumph of marketing over substance," using premium branding, pricing, and French origin to establish a luxury reputation rather than vastly superior production methods. While made with quality ingredients, its high status was largely created by marketing aimed at high-end venues in the 1990s.

Mostly just a status symbol , with some exceptions, but if you're drinking 400 WhistlePig your doing ok.
Honestly, I think Whistlepig is solid (right now I'm working on a bottle of the 12-year). But what I like most about it is that (at least years ago when I first discovered them at a Farmer's Market in Vermont) they're the only Rye that is made 100% from American Rye.

Ok, just checked. That is no longer true. Booooooooo.

Still good stuff though.
