Ok, first it was Macys, now it's... ETSY???!!! I mean, the algorithm knows how to get my attention. But this is getting ridiculous.

1766459219875.png

And that's the highlight of my Boca Raton write-up. This game is a complete clusterfuck. There are just too many question marks to recommend a wager.

Let's start with Toledo. The HC is gone, along with the DC, the co-DC, and the special teams coordinator. QB Gleason is either Doubtful or Questionable. He was knocked out of the season finale. Kalieb Osborne (seen above, in case you missed it) played well in very limited action. He averaged 10.8 yards/attempt (in just 24 attempts). As you might expect from a freshman though, he did take 3 sacks in only 27 drop-backs. That could be compounded by the LT (Gales) sitting this one out. I assume Cole Rhett (frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn) will get the start. He's actually rated as a much better run blocker than Gales, but a worse pass blocker. Osborne is also a good runner, and had more carries than pass attempts this year, averaging 7.5 yards/carry.

Ok, I'm going to save myself a lot of typing and just copy and paste the following from actionnetwork.com. The guys I highlighted are the top 5 guys in the Toledo defensive backfield.

1766460516640.png

Yeah, see why I don't want to bet money on this game? Those guys represent 11 of Toledo's 13 INTs and 31 of their 44 PDs. And it's possible all 5 are gonna sit out! Or maybe all 5 will play! Or something in between. Who the fuck knows?

The other sideline isn't all that clear either. Louisville may be missing all their Browns. RBs Isaac and Keyjuan (both are outstanding) and DL Selah. Ok, Selah Brown isn't much of a factor, and he's the only one who is definitely out. The Cardinals appear to only have one healthy RB, in fact. True freshman Braxton Jennings is the only RB who has touched the ball this year (37 carries) who isn't listed on the injury report. He was solid in the season finale against UK, picking up 113 yards on 20 carries. QB Moss is playing, but he'll be without his top WR. Chris Bell had 72 catches for 917 yards. The next guy (Lacy) had 54 catches for 547 yards. Nobody else had more than 20 catches.

FWIW, there may be some rain and wind (mid-teens, gusts in the upper 20s), with both expected to gradually subside through the game. And there's this...

1766461706486.png

So if you're down there, maybe stay out of the water. This concludes Smitty's PSA.

Gun to my head, maybe the best play is the under. But without knowing the status of Toledo's secondary... that feels like a foolish bet. I hate sitting out a bowl game, but I gotta do it.

I gotta pick this one (straight up) as part of a bowl contest with confidence points. I have Louis winning with high confidence. You’re ok with this?

Honestly? I couldn't have high confidence on anything in this game. Just way too many variables. Maybe the entire Toledo defensive secondary plays, Osborne is solid and combines for 350 yards passing and running, and Louisville just doesn't show up. Moss has been somewhat inconsistent and maybe they don't have any running backs and he can't get anything going through the air. Toledo winning by double digits wouldn't surprise me. All that said... Brohm has a very solid record in Bowl games (I already closed that window and don't remember the exact #s, but he's something like 5-2. Maybe even a little better.)... maybe the Cardinals show up and destroy an overmatched MAC team led by a freshman QB.

Hey, trust your gut, man. I thought JMU/Oregon was going to be a low-scoring game. What the hell do I know?

I saw that. And I'm thinking about tailing, just to give me some action on the game. I mean, I already set the DVR to record it.

But I'm also thinking about just making a small bet on Toledo on the ML.

Or the smartest thought I have... watching the start and seeing who is playing in the Toledo secondary (and the Louisville backfield) and then making a live wager. What really sucks... I don't think ESPN has been displaying the starting lineups. That would be super helpful. Instead, I'm going to have to look up the jersey #s for those 5 guys and look for them.

i'm going to play this game because I'm a degen for Bowl games. Nice write up per usual.
Thank you. And, yeah, I'm the same. I'm getting antsy. Gotta bet it. We only get so many bowl games, I hate passing any up. But even if I end up making some small bet, I certainly couldn't recommend anything to anyone else.

NO Bowl
Pretty clean, as far as opt-outs. WKU may be without one of their top DBs, Dylan Flowers. And it looks like Southern Miss is, well, missing their starting S Corey Myrick. CB Josh Moten, who led the team in PDs and INTs, is allegedly playing. Here's a quote from senior QB Braylon Braxton...

“This isn’t a vacation trip, a go have fun trip,” Braxton said. “We are going to down there to win this game. We love the game of football. Any opportunity that we get to play, we are going to go play, especially me, (safety) J Mo (Josh Moten), and these seniors."

Now, talk is cheap. But if that's a serious statement, then it's certainly what I want to hear if I'm betting Southern Miss.

The Southern Miss HC left the team, but their OC is stepping in. And he's a pretty good HC to bring off the bench... Blake Anderson. He'll be the HC next year. However, Anderson is only 3-6 in bowl games.

The biggest question I have... what is WKU's mindset? It was a tough finish to the season. In their penultimate game, they played at LSU. Yes, that LSU. The Hilltoppers never trailed by more than 10, and Dylan Flowers returned a fumble 72 yards for a TD with a minute left. WKU only lost by 3. One week later, they played at Jacksonville St, with a trip to the CUSA Championship game on the line. It was a real back-and-forth game, and Jax St kicked the winning fg as time expired.

So is WKU really focused on this game?

WKU relies on the passing attack. Midway through the season, freshman Rodney Tisdale took over at QB for Maverick McIvor. While overall Tisdale's stats were similar to McIvor's, some things you'd expect from a freshman bore true. He threw 9 TDs with 6 INTs (McIvor had 12 TDs and 5 INTs) and took the same number of sacks, but in roughly 60 fewer pass attempts. He's thrown at least one INT in each of his 4 starts. Southern Miss, led by J'Mond Tapp (7.5 sacks) can get after the QB. And LB Chris Jones is 7th in the country with 128 tackles. While WKU doesn't run the ball a lot, they do have 2 capable RBs in Parrish (5.2/carry) and Wright (5.8)

Braxton was the Sunbelt Offensive Player of the Year last year at Marshall before transferring to Southern Miss. And he had another solid year, averaging 7.9 yards/att and throwing for 23 TDs and 7 INTs. He was hampered by a knee injury the last 2 games of the season. Hopefully he's recovered now. While Southern Miss runs the ball more than WKU, they're not very effective. Lead RB Pittman only averages 4.4 yards/carry. Luckily for them, WKU allows 5.1 yards/rush (124th in the country).

Southern Miss tied for the national lead with 21 INTs. Even without Myrick, they may get Tisdale a couple times. In fact, TOs could play a huge role today, as WKU is 102nd in the country in TO Margin, while Southern Miss is 6th.

Southern Miss (ML) 5 to win 4
Parlay Southern Miss +3.5/Over 54.5 2 to win 2.2

Nothing now. Just saw the 1st Half line is 7.5.

I'll see if i can tell who is playing in the Toledo secondary and maybe make a live play. But, really, any bet I make is going to be forced. I'm guessing this line movement is due to a couple more of those secondary guys sitting out. Gleason was already known.

I only saw Fuller and Smith (starting CBs) on the field. Which means all 3 safeties are sitting this one out. Including All-American McNeil-Warren. Right after ESPN put up a graphic about him just before kickoff. Too funny.

Obviously any value is long gone after that opening drive. This is painful... but I think I'm completely sitting this one out. GL, everyone.

Soooo.... just sat down to eat some lunch and get caught up on the game... and I saw Bowers and McNeil-Warren were both in the game on the 2nd Louisville possession. That means the original projection of Awls being the only one sitting out was correct.

And now this degen has some skin in the game. For shits and giggles, I bet Toledo on the ML at +450.
