Hi Wineguy. The 3rd under trend was very strong for a couple of years back to back and then fizzled out. Why it changed I'm not sure, maybe I was just lucky and hit a trend by accident until the law of averages caught up. ironically I thought the trend would be stronger than ever after a couple of good years because the NBA started to allow zones and I thought there would be more adjustments at halftimes with the defenses and the trend would actually be stronger, but it wasn't. I kept charts on 2nd and 3rd quarter over/unders for about 3 years after I stopped playing them, and if you would have played all unders in that time you would have been buried as there actually were more overs, especially the 2nd quarter. I gave up on it about 2 -3 years ago but I may start charting again as it seems to me the 3rd quarter under may be making a comeback. I have no proof or records to back this up. I do keep charts on every team with every quarter score so I do have the data. I do play some quarters based on individual teams, not as a league wide trend. I pay more attention now to college 1st half unders. Basically if you get 2 mediocre or bad teams playing each other and both do not score many points, it is hard for them to play over 60. There are a few tweaks within this but I think you can start with that as a basic truth.
