My friend locked his keys in the car with the ignition in the "on" position.

Was able to retrieve the keys two hours later.

Tried to start the car but to no avail. Car would not turn over or even make a sound.

But all lights, bells and whistles are working.

Came to conclusion anti theft system may have been activated.

Used the google for 2000 Chevy Venture LS Anti Theft System.

Followed instructions but still nothing.

Any ideas?

Scott,

When you turn the ignition key there are no sounds. No clicks, buzzes, dings, dongs or bing, bam, boom. Nada.

But the dash lights work.

I'm not sure about their system but if you do that to a late model BMW, it drains the key's batterys and then they will be out of sync with the car alarm.

I got to say that the alternator is the problem here. The battery has enough power to keep the little lights on, but the big stuff has to be charged by the good old alternator.

I used to have a Corvette with this same anti-theft system and when mine locked up (it happened 3 times for various reasons) the dealership had to send a tech out to reset it. They never charged me anything for the service but it still sucked. Sounds like the same as yours (everything worked but the ignition.)
Good luck.

Same here. Everything else worked but the car wouldn't turn on and made no sounds. Had to be towed to the dealership to have the anti-theft system code reactivated.

chevy impala's from the mid-00's had a similar problem, usually all you needed to do was wait maybe 10-20 minutes and restart the car and eventually it would, never had to take one to the dealership.

there was also some kind of quicker fix that involved removing the ?relay switch? - not sure of the name, it is small square shaped located near the under-the-hood fusebox - and trying a ''hot wire'' using a paper clip but you obviously need to know where to make the connection.

maybe try removing the battery to get a reset?

vehicle is up and running / local mechanic traced the schematic and said a fuse was MISSING / how and why it started before the keys were locked in the car remains unanswered / friend is just happy to be back on the road / 2 hours labor = 70 bucks / thanks for all the replies.
