ok, this probably sounds like a ridiculous question but however, in the movie INTO THE WILD, the dude kills a moose but gets none of the meat as it spoils with flies maggots etc.. How could you preserve meat outside in that summer environment. Just curious.

Thanks

ahh the above question was a legitimate curiosity. I guess I should have read some of the other posts today.

My question regarding preserving meat in summer conditions involving survival, was/is a legitimate curiosity.

Has absolutely nothing to do with all the negativity posted today involving:pussies, Hillbillies, cornholes, or any other negative derogatory statements.

to preserve the meat, you would have to quickly gut the moose and hang it up. Another option would be to quarter out the meat and get that to a cool environment. It's hard to keep meat, that's one reason why the majority of hunting seasons are during the late fall/winter. The old timers used to salt all of their meat very heavily to keep it preserved.

how about if you wrapped the meat in plastic and put it in a cold stream ?

would that preserve it for long ?

These were more or less my thoughts. He was stranded in Alaska in the summer months, so there really was no cold environment except for the rivers, but he had no plastic or anything of that nature. It almost looks like he was trying to smoke the meat in a fire with pine branches or something:shrug: pretty good movie in any case. Dam shame to starve to death after killing moose only to let the meat rot.

in that case, he's probably only going to get 2, maybe 3 means from that moose. I suppose u could put some in a cold stream

When I use to hunt squirrels--I would shoot them from so far away the meat would often spoil before I could walk to them--found putting salt on ammo alleviated a lot of this :)

i just watched that last night. i don't understand 2 things. 1) how did he kill that big ass moose and drop him immediately with a .22 and 2) why he didn't get at least ONE meal out of that thing.

also, the kid kinda had it going in alaska but totally blew it. he had no respect for "the wild" and thought he could beat anything and do anything just because he thought he knew everything.

dumb ass hard-headed kid.

Jack, I was somewhat curious about the movie, so did some reading on Internet. Evidently they did some extensive testing at Labs, and he didn't get poisoned. Evidently just starved. They said there was some rope bridge less than Half a mile from the bus that they found his body in. In addition there is a Alaskan dude out there that brings people to the bus on a 4 runner. He stated in summer it is impossible to not catch salmon in the river. They are so plentiful you can literally flip them out of the river with a pine branch.

Last resort, wouldn't you start a huge fire before starving? People familiar with Alaska just think he was way over his head.

i think he just got bored and lazy like he did with regular life and the real world.

all that running around with the animals "enjoying the land" he never discovered the bridge? he was there for a LONG time.

i'd say he was definitely over his head.

and there was NO excuse for not getting one meal out of that moose. he had no idea what he was doing, just 'thought' he could do anything he wanted.

i don't understand why he just cut off his sister and parents either. just doesn't make sense.

i'd say only about 10% of the whole movie was true.

I have not seen the movie yet but it is sitting right here. Have read the book twice and I would say you are wrong, that the movie is 95% accurate.

Sean Penn pursued his mother for years for the movie rights and everything was to be dead on.

90% of the time he was all by himself so how would anybody really know. okay, he kept a diary, or did he?

quite a few things in the movie don't make much sense as you will see.

i could definitely be wrong too as i was sorta distracted during the movie a few times ;)

pretty good movie, i guess. i was entertained but that doesn't say much either :D

i've watched somewhere around 200 movies in the last 3 months. how bored am I?

He did keep a Journal, which I read is still out in the bus along with his other belongings. Penn tried to make things as "true" as possible from what I read. Evidently he filmed everything at the real locations opposed to stages. Had to be something paddling down the Colorado River 200 + miles to Mexico.
