Though a small wager, I am on Marshall -8 ( +100). It's not everyday when the Herd gets a big 10 team to travel down to Huntington. While replacing all everything QB Cato is a big concern, Doc Holliday is a solid coach who has rebuilt Marshall's winning tradition. Thinking here that the Herd gets it done.

The following is from the Indy Star :

Marshall running game vs. Purdue rush defense

The Boilermakers saw plenty of talented running backs last season in the Big Ten. Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon, Michigan State's Jeremy Langford, Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah and Minnesota's David Cobb. We'll find out where Devon Johnson ranks. He averaged 8.58 yards per carry last season, a byproduct of quarterback Rakeem Cato, who is now in the CFL. Jake Replogle and Ryan Watson are experienced defensive tackles and the linebackers all return. It's one of those unknowns going into the opener. Edge: Marshall

The experience of the Boilermakers' offensive line is a plus and the offense has to lean on the veteran group to run its different tempos. D.J. Knox and Markell Jones established themselves as the top two running backs, and Knox is expected to handle a bulk of the duties. The sophomore is stronger than you think ? he can bench press 420 pounds. The Herd lack experience upfront and the Boilermakers need to take advantage. Edge: Purdue

Marshall passing game vs. Purdue pass defense

Cato and his playmaking skills are gone, leaving Michael Birdsong to run the offense. Birdsong last played 21 months ago for James Madison. Birdsong also doesn't have the weapons that Cato did. He'll challenge a pair of solid cornerbacks in Frankie Williams and Anthony Brown, but the Boilermakers also have to bring pressure. Don't be surprised if defensive coordinator Greg Hudson is blitz-happy trying to rattle Birdsong. Edge: Purdue

Purdue passing game vs. Marshall pass defense

The end of last season was hard to watch after Danny Anthrop suffered a knee injury at Nebraska, creating a void in the passing game. Anthrop is back, and the Boilermakers appear to be improved with the addition of junior college transfers Domonique Young and Anthony Mahoungou. DeAngelo Yancey is a good bet for a bounce-back candidate. Quarterback Austin Appleby's accuracy is on the uptick, but his receivers need to prove they can win those one-on-one battles. Edge: Marshall

Special teams

Paul Griggs will handle field goals and kickoffs and Thomas Meadows returns at punter. Although Akeem Hunt and Raheem Mostert are gone, the combination of Anthrop, Williams and Brown provide the chance for big plays in the return game. Deandrea Reaves will become Marshall's career leader in kickoff return yards and punter Tyler Williams is back after averaging 44.1 yards. Edge: Purdue

Prediction

Marshall has been the focus since offseason workouts started in January. The Boilermakers even had "Marshall Mondays" to ramp up the intensity and to keep the concentration on the season opener. Now nine months later, we'll see if the third season in Darrell Hazell's tenure begins the upward climb. Not the ideal situation to open on the road against a team that was 13-1 last year to gain traction in an important season, but the Boilermakers will know where they stand pretty quickly. Purdue 32, Marshall 26

hers something else from the south bend paper:

http://www.southbendtribune.com/spo...cle_829c997c-f67e-5242-aa98-ce92de3c8445.html

im seriously considering a play on the boilermakers +7- and ml. maybe ill take a nap and hope that the feeling passes.

Don't blame you at all as Marshall is looking like the square play of the week right now. I'm just not a big fan of Hazell though. It's one thing to squeeze a nice season out of Kent St in the MAC and quite another thing to repeat that where the bar is much higher. Glad I just played this one very small.

Purdue at a glance

Returning stars

The Hubble Telescope has discovered a star in West Lafayette, even though Purdue has gone 4-20 in Hazell?s two seasons as coach. Senior receiver Danny Anthrop is a proven bright spot for the Boilermakers. He led Purdue with 616 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 38 catches last season but missed the final three games because of a torn knee ligament. Anthrop said he?s healthy and ready to shine again.

Newcomers to watch

Freshman running back Markell Jones was named Mr. Football in Indiana last year after rushing for a state-record 3,536 yards as a senior at Columbus East. He averaged 11.3 yards per carry. In one game, Jones ran for 257 yards and five touchdowns on nine carries.

Keys to the offense

Jones and Keyante Green must fill the backfield void left by Akeem Hunt and Raheem Mostert, who were Purdue?s leading rushers last season. Anthrop needs to show his knee can hold up to help an attack that ranked 108th nationally in total offense. The Boilermakers also are unsettled at quarterback, an issue that has haunted Hazell?s brief tenure.

Keys to the defense

Somehow, someway, the Boilermakers need to generate a pass rush. Their 20 sacks last season were second-fewest in the Big Ten. Purdue was 10th in total defense in league rankings, 80th in the nation, and allowed eight opponents to score 30 points or more.

Special-teams spotlight

Purdue has proven veterans in senior kicker Paul Griggs and senior punter Thomas Meadows. Frankie Williams gives the Boilermakers a threat as a punt returner.

Question marks

The Boilermakers thought they had their quarterback riddle solved in the middle of last season when Austin Appleby wrestled the job from Danny Etling. After a brief spark, however, Appleby struggled. This preseason, he had to fend off a challenge from redshirt freshman David Blough. Etling transferred to LSU.

Outlook

Purdue showed improvement in its second season under Hazell, a former Ohio State assistant, before losing its final four games by an average score of 33-15. The Boilermakers return 16 starters, including the entire offensive line, but not enough playmakers.

Marshall has a receiver that's 228 pounds benches 400+ and squats 550.. Holy shit. You think birdsong can deliver the ball? :popcorn2 anyone know about this kids arm strength, accuracy or mobility? Anything ?

Birdsong more picks than TDS while at Jimmy Mad. Marshall kicking game stinks too!!

Exciting game for me to watch as Markell Jones was our high school running back that I watched play every game the last 2 seasons. He set damn near every rushing record for HS in Indiana during his HS career.

He broke all those records usually only playing the 1H because we were usually up about 49-0 by HT.

Was that a small High School or a big one?

In MD they rank them from 1A to 4 or 5A depending on size of the size of the school. Big difference in terms of competition most of the time between 2A and 4A.

I think there are 5 but maybe 6 and they were 3rd. If it's done by school size they ranked 3rd but were ranked in the 2nd because they won state the year before and had to move up. Something like that, I don't remember.

He's very family and his dad is a pilot for Cummins here in Columbus and Markell wants to be a pilot as well. Pretty sure that's why Purdue.
