Race could be holding back Toby Gerhart

Posted by Mike Florio on April 21, 2010 4:39 PM ET

Former Stanford running back Toby Gerhart is white. And, apparently, the color of his skin is affecting his draft stock.

An unnamed scout has told Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports that Gerhart's race will knock him down by a round.

"He'll be a great second-round pickup for somebody, but I guarantee you if he was the exact same guy -- but he was black -- he'd go in the first round for sure," the unnamed scout said. "You could make a case that he's a Steven Jackson-type -- doesn't have blazing speed but he's strong and powerful and versatile."

Um, what?

Gerhart also told Silver he was asked about race during pre-draft interviews. "One team I interviewed with asked me about being a white running back," Gerhart said. "They asked if it made me feel entitled, or like I felt I was a poster child for white running backs. I said, 'No, I'm just out there playing ball. I don't think about that.' I didn't really know what to say."

We can discount the latter remark because teams say all sorts of dumb stuff during interviews in order to see how kids will react to stress. But the comment from the scout is mind-blowing.

As we see it, if anyone wants to pass on Gerhart because they think his skills are limited due to his race, the team that ultimately takes him won't have a problem with that decision.

Previously, we'd believed that stereotypes influence football at the lower levels of the game, when the athletic kids with white skin are steered toward quarterback, and the frustrated jock with a whistle pushed athletic African-American youths toward running back and receiver. But it now appears that, even at the NFL, decisions get made based on factors that simply don't matter.

Then again, the bad organizations don't become bad organizations by accident.

Its true and I still think he should of won the heisman last year....

Heisman is such a bullshit award anymore, eventually fans will not care, because of the politics that surround it....

Guy on the radio in KC made the point that Craig James was the last white running back to rush for 1,000 yards in 1985 and Riggins was the last white superstar RB. Unreal that it's been a quarter of a century since a white guy ran for 1,000 yards. Other than Mike Alstott, I can't think of a white guy who has been good within the past decade.

Such a joke. Its not racism at all. Its knowing a power back with average speed and agility who ran all over very weak Pac 10 defenses wont be much of a factor in the NFL.

people on this board are very sensitve...its true that he is VIEWED differently because he is white and not black.....

is that racism, i dont know...does it effect me, nope....am i hoping he succeeds, only if hes on my team, could care less otherwise

Ron Dayne ring a bell?, I didnt hear a thing about him becoming a fullback out of college

How bout TJ Duckett?....both these guys big tailbacks who were drafted 11th and 18th in 1st round.......Toby doesn't get a sniff of a mention for 1st round

when scouts say the same thing, I dont see what the big deal is in saying hes looked at differently because hes a white tailback trying to make it in the NFL.....

Thats not the point, youre taking it to the extreme......it would be the same if a cornerback who ran 4.38 and had 18 career Ints coming out of college and was white...

youre going to tell me scouts and gms wouldnt view him differently

or is it just a coincidence that all the starting cornerbacks and tailbacks in the nfl are black?:moon:

shit, i would view them differently

this argument is so stupid. its not racism at all. none what so ever.

most RBs in the NFL are black...so what? they are better athletes.

most QBs in the NFL are white.

if the NFL was "racist" why would they have mostly white players at what is the most important position on the field?

Yeah, the fact that he's white is definitely being held against him. The simple truth is, historically, there haven't been very many successful white RBs. Because of that, teams are hesitant to take a white RB based on the track record. I'm amazed people are even trying to dispute this.

Wow. SERIOUSLY??? You say this isn't racism against Gerhart, then you turn around and make a blanket statement like "blacks are better athletes?" :mj07: Hi pot, meet kettle.

Logical reverse argument here - every nfl management (at least the profit-driven ones) would realize that a white rb pro bowler would do wonders for their merchandise sales etc .....so reverse racism makes no sense at all. If anything, NFL teams (who want to make money) should be all over this guy just in case he's the real deal.

Where it is real F ing COLD
Putting race aside.. Would I want him as my starting back probably not. We have Peterson and we had Taylor.. Now I know that is lofty but I do not think race has anything to do with it.. I am not an expert on Gehrhart and byt I did watch him a lot but to me I put him into a mediocre brand of NFL back.. I just think he lacks outside speed and shiftyness maybe I am off base but he is too up and down type of runner.. I don't think he can get to the edge in the NFL but what the hell do I know:shrug:
