F-Secure Corporation is warning about a new level of attack to be unleashed by the Sobig.F worm today.

Windows e-mail worm Sobig.F, which is currently the most widespread worm in the world, has created massive e-mail outages globally since it was found on Tuesday the 18th of August ? four days ago. The worm spreads itself via infected e-mail attachments in e-mails with a spoofed sender address. Total amount of infected e-mails seen in the Internet since this attack started is close to 100 million.

However, the Sobig.F worm has a surprise attack in its sleeve.

Your e-mail is being spoofed by the virus, even tho you don't have the actual virus, and you're getting all the bounces from the addresses that won't accept it. What you can do to help prevent i all the bounces landing in your 'inbox' is to create a rule in Outlook to filter out anything that has the subject line "Returned mail: User unknown". If you're using Hotmail to get your email, you can actually get the email in Outlook Express and create that filter in there. Then the bounces can be sent directly to the trash.

So, try this, launch Outlook Express. Then click on tools > accounts > add > mail > and then just follow the prompts. You'll be prompted for your account, password, etc. Once that's set up and you're sending/receiving just fine, then you go to Tools > message rules > mail > and then filter based on whatever all of those messages your getting have in common (all of the ones I have been getting have that same subject line.)

Good Luck!!

Careful 65, Macs have come a long way in the past 3 years. Unless you have used one running OSX in the past couple of years or so, zip it. I am an admin of both PC's and Macs at work. Personally I am a PC guy because that is what pays the bills, but current Macs are far superior IMO. In fact, the new G5 is currently the most powerful personal computer in the world.

Msdee - Your machine is NOT exempt from all the mass emails that are going around from the sobig virus. Your machine will not get infected if you open one of the emails, though. ;)

Well said Stuman. I think our macintosh computers are the greatest. If you do any graphics, they are the best. I do have the new OSX and it is really great. Thanks for the heads up on opening e-mails. People should try our mac's before the put them down.

Out of curiousity why do hackers attack M.S and not Apple.
Only logical reason I can come up withis small # of people outside education system that use Apples, is this main reason or are there others? I don't think they bother netscape browers either do they?

My entire school district, plus many others is Mac. But, they claim we are going to make a slow change to Dell. Most schools at least on the secondary level, seem to be going to laptops.
