How's that going?

They're called pizza pies, dude.

I see Subway sells a 90 second pizza now.

They did those a couple years ago but didnt promote it. I think they use an older version of the Mad Dash ovens with an inferior stone. No doubt their pizza *pies* suck at least as bad as their sandwiches.

Yep, I've got it. When I was first diagnosed the doc put me on Nexxium, which was great. Only had to take it once a day and never had a problem. But like you, the insurance wouldn't cover it.

I now take Omeprazole (which is the name of the ingredient, but also the brand name since it's generic). You're supposed to take it twice a day, but a lot of times I only take it once and I have very few issues. And it's pretty cheap -- you can buy it over the counter here for almost the same price as what it costs through my insurance (I think it's less than $10 for 14 tablets).

Damn Glenn, you in my bathroom? :mj07:

I take 1 Omep every night and try not to eat late. That's all it took.

Nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night choking, gasping for breath with vomit-taste in your throat.

Don't eat late Jack and try Omep. I go to Walgreen's once a month and get my monthly supply.

Take care.

:142smilie We seem to only run into each other when we we're talking about hammer toes or acid reflux. We've gotta stop meeting like this! :scared

I usually get my Omeprazole from the grocery store, but sometimes Walgreen's has a better price. You're right, it works like a charm. Not quite as good as the Nexium the doc gave me early on, but I'm thinking nothing is going to top that stuff. Probably why it's so damn expensive. :(

Prevacid is OTC now. Just take 2 tablets instead of one, same exact as prescription. I just think I got immune to it.

My reflux has decreased dramatically as I have dropped my dairy intake. I would give up gluten if I really really had to, but I sure would miss beer. And please don't call that gluten-free swill, beer.

2 Biggies as far as Reflux is Concerned

Gluten Intolerance ? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Because regular white flour is made from wheat and white flour is in almost everything, it is very hard to avoid. If you think flour is only in bread, do some research. You will be amazed about all the stuff that contains flour.

Dairy Intolerance ? Many people have trouble digesting dairy products. Usually this is because an enzyme in the body that helps break down the food is missing or is not produced in sufficient quantities. Like gluten, dairy is in everything and is very difficult to completely avoid.

Chocolate and wine give me instant heartburn--worst case is when I'm sleeping--this happens maybe 6 times a year--wake up with dream I swallowed lit cig--and thats what it feels like.
After I get my breath take an alkaseltzer for heartburn and gone immediately. You might try that for at home Jack--but hard to find water to mix if- out and about.

Mully, if the Prilosec OTC didn't work for you, don't bother with the omeprazole..... they are the same thing.

Jack, I'm surprised that quitting the cigarettes didn't improve the problem for you. I, too, went through all of the prescription medications, including Axid, Prilosec, Tagamet, Pepcid and others. The only things that would help were Nexium and Prevacid. Once I lost my insurance, my options dried up. Prilosec (omeprazole) twice daily or OTC Prevacid help but aren't really affordable to me right now. One thing you can do that really does help is elevate the head of your bed or sleep with a wedge. The problem (and the resultant damage) is usually worse at night due to gravity. When you're reclining, the acid makes its way up from your stomach. Elevating the head of the bed helps "keep it down". It looks silly as Hell but is effective. Also, avoid eating before you go to bed and stay the Hell away from anything fried!

Something to remember, stomach acid is hydrochloric acid. It is an industrial corrosive. The stomach has mucus and a protective lining that protect it from acidic destruction but your esophagus doesn't. You really should have it checked (if your doctor recommends) by endoscopy, under sedation if necessary.

Seriously, try putting blocks under the bedposts and see if it helps.

Jack:

Protonix (Pantoprazole) worked for me. I took it as needed only. It' doesn't work fast but lasts a couple of days.

Took Omeprazole (Prilosec) everyday (per Dr. instructions) a while back and developed tachychardia. The Protonix didn't have that side effect.

Now I just take a Zantac 150 once every week or two and it's doing the trick. Insurance wanted verification form Dr. to continue the Protonix and I said screw 'em kapitalist bastids :0074
