Some of you are really missing something here. Just because a 17 year old could play in the majors if he could hit 60 homers doesn't mean Barry Bonds should be able to play Legion ball. 41 year-olds can play in the "A" soccer league around here, but the 25 year olds can't play in the over 40 league. There are "sub leagues" in every sport that players can move up to, but not vice-versa.
Anyway, why are you guys getting your panties in a bunch? Are women getting too uppity for ya? Are they taking all our jobs? Why do you care?
LPGA is just a sub-league for golfers. It's marketed as women's golf, not women's and men's golf. If it is economically viable for the sponsors, TV stations, and members then its going to remain in existence. It will no longer function as what it's marketed as, if they allow men to play. And if its economically viable, why stop it and kill the golden goose? You don't just kill things that are profitable just because they're not the best.
If you're worried about the second-rate men's golfers, then start your own men's minor league PGA tour. If you can find sponsors, I'm sure you'd have a lot of people ready to play. Maybe you could even let the golfers pick their own name and you could call it the XGA.
And, if you have a problem with her sponsor's exemption, well, that's just money, man. Men get sponsor's exemptions. If the sponsor thinks its going to get more viewers because she's playing, then she's going to be playing. And if the ratings are excellent (which they will be if she makes the cut) then you better get used to her being there. Shoot, if the ratings are good enough, maybe she even starts getting appearance fees like Tiger does in Asia. How about that. Appearance fees for women at PGA events...
Finally, that's as far as my women's lib-ism goes. I think she gets crushed. Just because she SHOULD be able to try to compete with men doesn't mean she CAN compete. This ain't no Betty Crocker bake-off. It's a physical competition. I just hope she doesn't break down in tears when she misses the cut by 18 strokes. Give me some odds on that.
