It was announced today that the Bank of America Colonial Golf Tourn. invited Annika Sorenstam to play. She accepted and I would like to know how some of you feel about this. I would like to think of myself as a pretty level headed individual, but for some reason I have a problem with this. What does she have to gain by doing this? What will it prove. Will the LPGA allow Tiger or David Duval to participate in their tournaments. I could see Annika playing if the women did not have a tour of their own, but they do. If this was the only place for her to play professionally, I would have no problem. I hope I am not coming across as an egotistical jackass, but I was just wondering if I am the only one that has a problem with this?

It won't last long because she will embarrass herself playing against real golfers. But if she can compete under the same conditions, more power to her.

And wait until one of the mediocre men's players decides he can make more money playing the women's tour and tries to get an invite to one of those. See what they say when the shoe is on the other foot.

I think that she should play on her own tour. I am not saying that she should not have the chance to play with the men, but rather that she should play on the tour with other lpga players.

74-75 missed cut is what I see. :D

If she wants to play the mens rules I do not have too much of a problem with it. But if they do allow women to enter Mens events then it only stands to reason that the best woman players would be playing on the Mens Tour which would reduce the Womens Tour to even more of a minor leauge standing. In the end hurting the Womans Tour.

This is just amazing to me that women get away with this type of thing. Sure Tiger, come on over and play in the LPGA US Open. Right.

If she hits from the same tee's as the men, then by all means, come on over and finish 30 shots back, miss the cut and stop this rediculous notion that women can play with the men. It really jacks me off in some of our scrambles over the summer that a team will get a girl that can actually hit a semi-decent drive just so she can tee off from the girls tee's which are like 100+ yards closer to the green than the blue tees (which the real golfers hit from).
Ladies tees my ass.

She will be hitting from the men's tees and i say good luck to her. It will bring moer interest to a routine PGA weekend, so I can see why the tournament organizers are interested.

I can't believe penguin, that they let ladies hit from different tees in your scramble...that sucks. The solution is to take all but the tournament tee boxes off the course before the start of play....then put in the rules sheet that play shall be off the red tees... and watch those teams faces as they see only one set!

cheers

The Ladies have their own tour, if they didn't I'd say no problem, but the fact is she did not qualify for this event she got a sponsors exemption or something like that.

The main point is she is taking the spot of some guy who is trying to stay high enough on the money list to keep his PGA card and this is one less event he will be in, it could mean the difference between him getting or not getting his card for next year.

LPGA = LADIES Professional Golf tour
PGA - Professional Golf Association

LPGA is open to ladies. PGA is open to professional golfers. A man could not play in the LPGA . If she is good enough to compete, fine. If she is not then she will be back on the LPGA pretty quick.

No big deal either way.

Good point Blitz. I hadn't even considered that she's taking away a shot for another hopeful. Maybe whoever would have played should get to play in the next LPGA event she's scheduled for instead of her.

I figured someone would bring up the LPGA-PGA thing. Fact is, the PGA was created when women were still in the kitchen. There wasn't a need to attach men's to the title. It was just implied that it was a man's tour, and now women are taking advantage of the technicality (IMO). If you are a lady, and you are a professional golfer, then you play on the LPGA tour.

But then again, this is just my opinion. And I agree twofingers, not really a big deal either way, because I think she will get smoked and go back to the LPGA with her tail between her legs.

You go girl........................If she plays the SAME course the guys are playing and compete's, good for her. With the men's tour paying triple the money the LPGA tour does, can you blame her?She would fair better making cut's on the men's tour, than finishing in the top 5 week in,week out on the LPGA.Can you imagine the guy's watching the leaderboard on Friday afternoon trying to make sure she doesn't beat any of them. OUCH!!!

One last note, What would your opinion be if she was your DAUGHTER?

will they allow her to wear shorts? Will it take away from her time needed to clean house and cook meals? I don't know.....I think it is a bad idea.

FDC.........the PGA does not allow a competitor to wear shorts. So she will be wearing pants.Which is not really a big deal in how well she will play.Although I think this rule is stupid but it is tradition.......

Now to all the guys that think she cant play with the big boys.....well you're gonna be in for a surprise. This course is long at 7000yds and they play it as par 70 so this is a big setback for Annika. However I checked her stats from last year and was amazed to see how well she stacks up to the PGA members.

Driving Distance 265yds
Driving accuracy 80%
Greens in regulation 79%

Tiger Woods

Driving Distance 293yds......top 10 on tour
Driving accuracy 67%
GIR 74%

This is comparing her to the best the PGA has to offer..Her driving distance average is better than 8 guys on the PGA tour last year.Annika will play her usual game and drive it in every fairway, hit most all the greens and keep it out of trouble. Can she compete on the PGA tour??????YES....will she win a tournament??????NO.....but she will hold her own.I would hate to be the 2 guys paired with her the first day.It will be a media frenzy. Then to have the whole world watch as she beats me.Its definitely a no lose situation for her....and I would be surprised if she missed the cut.Like most every thing else in pro sports.....this is just a PR move to gather attention....and it has worked.......

I think she will beat plenty of men when she plays this tourney, but certainly not all of them. I think she will probably end up somewhere in the middle of the pack, maybe right around the cut-off mark. I don't look for this to become the norm. This will likely be just for show and that will be the end of it.

Jhpga, the problem with your analysis is that while her drives may be 265, this would still put her near the bottom of even the Nationwide tour and even only mid-pack in the Senior Tour. She's only #5 in distance and accuracy on the LPGA tour. Since she is presently playing the shorter women's courses, her greens in regulation numbers will drop dramatically on a longer course. I don't see how she can be expected to even be competitive on the rabbit tour.

shorter womens courses and a lot wider fairways....dont forget that!!!!

also lets see her hit those 3 woods to the 470 yd par 4s with tucked pins on cement green while men hit their 7 irons.....

Title 9

Title 9

That's it. Lets declare all Men's sports as "open" leagues. We can let all players try out and compete. If a female can play with the big boys then let her. If she is that good she deserves the bigger paycheck.

This would put an end to title 9 and salvage Men's minor sports (anything but Football and Basketball).

Side note: Annka's driving distance ranks her 200th in the PGA.

DR....it is true that the men play much longer courses but there is NO WAY she will get embarrassed as Rudy said.Ive been in the golf business for 9yrs and have 2 really good friends that played the Nike tour for a few seasons. We have sat around the clubhouse and talked about Annika playing against men and we all agreed that she could make cuts but would never win. When she shot a 59:eek: in 2001 is when she got my attention. She was the first women to ever do that and only 3 or 4 men have shot that low on the PGA tour.Ive watched Annika play several times live cause the LPGA has a tour stop here in Nashville....and she has the complete game.Like I said...you guys will be impressed when she makes the cut.I hope they give her a good pairing. It wont be to fair if they pair her with Tiger and Michelson but it wouldnt surprise me if Tiger sits this one out so she has the spotlight. If there is a line put out that she misses/makes the cut.....I will be on the makes cut.Now this women that played her way into the GMO is a completely different story. She is nowhere near Annika's caliber and might get embarrassed....:D

This tournament is by invitation and this is one of the smallest events on tour, so if someone is 130th on the $$ list they weren't getting invited anyway.

i heard a radio interview with the director and he said she approached them to play, he went on to say that a group of 6 made the decision to play, and that it was a difficult one. This chick can play and whether she plays well or not, it doesn't matter, there thinking of the added ratings from the causal golf fan, because the hard core fans will watch anyway.

Plus this chick is jacked

TTM, i'm sure you could dig up spme fine photos of her:D
