I've recently just started to do a lot of fishing since I have a break from school. A buddy and I found a "secret" fishing hole that has been awesome thus far. My question is about lure types. With the amount of rain we've had, the water level is high so there is about 15 yards of cover (weeds, thick) off the bank. (we are fishing from the bank in this spot). We've been very successful in catching 1-2 lb bass using worms as lures. So here's my question: What kinds of lures are better for thick brush? All of the fish we catch are right on the border of it. And also, are there better baits for larger bass...I think I read spinners somewhere but not sure.

I would appreciate any feedback:p

I never remember an outdoors forum, that would be awesome. I figured with the diversity of guys in here (and gals), many of which are in outdoors active places like TN etc would have some help for an unexperienced angler.

...don't get kosar started up again. :nono:

LOL :D

...certainly no professional myself, but you probably wouldn't want to throw a spinner in brush or thick cover. Late afternoon or early morning, you may want to try a little topwater bait, but just throw it right up next to the brush and let it sit for a few seconds, then jerk it...let it sit for a few seconds again...and repeat. Hope I helped a little.

I use mostly spinners or plastic worms to catch some bass. There is a lure call a bottom bouncer that works well when you are in thick weeds, but you tend to get caught a little more sometimes. All it is is like a 90 degree angle louer that has the weight on the bottom, and your bait is up above it a foot or so. They work preety good. if you go to a sports store they will know what I'm talking about.

I know that bass strike in anger in a lot of cases instead of a feeding opportunity. This is especially true in the spring when you drag top-water jigs above their spawn beds. They chomp on just about anything. But, not sure what to tell you in late summer. My initial thought is the same as Taoist's. A top water jig with a concave front that makes a lot of splash when you tug on it. Guess you'll have to see what works. I rarely find time to fish, so take my advice for what its worth. :(

Try using smaller compact worms or crawfish type plastic baits or
tube jigs. Peg the weight against the bait with a tooth pick and
just break it off so its not sticking out. This helps to not get hung
up in the thick stuff. Just flip it out there in a pocket or hole and
let it drop down to various depths depending on the depth of
water and jig it up and down.
Hope this is some help to you. Enjoy the fishing. :D

When I was living down south I had good luck with a worm called a "Sluggo". Dont know if thats how its spelled but thats how it sounds. Work it like you would any other worm and you can add beads to it if you want sound.

Ive never caught a small bass on it. Anything thats hit it was in the 4lb plus range. Silver/Black was a good color.

Near the weeds.......if you've been successful with the worms....
stick with them....try salt impregnated rubber grubs.............fish go deeper a/o seek cover as the sun gets high so strategies change from first light to mid- day. I recall getting some nice bass on a jitterbugs, rattletraps, hula poppers, rapalas...all fish differently....musky too
Know your lake..................colors change as fishes food supply changes and what works one year will not the next.
Makes me wanna get the poles out!

Makes me want to fish as well. Stick with what you are doing. You may want to try the carolina rig for a different way to work the worm. :D

LOL Taoist. As I mentioned a few motnhs ago, the darkest day ever here at madjacks sports gambling forum was the day that madjack himself pulled the plug on that thing. I was the second biggest supporter of that thing (after fatdaddy) and in a lot of ways my life hasn't been the same since it was snuffed out like a soggy cigarette stub. I laughed and I cried in that forum. It just seems like the man wanted to keep us camping types down when he deleted that forum.

I think the worms your best bet in hot summer weather and grass
may want to try a pig and jig, big bass seem to like 'em. black or black and blue are good colors in Ky. Fish it slow in summer heat;)

You didn't mention what kind of tackle you're using but at the kind of distance your describing I would most defintley be using a bait caster with a medium action rod ....at least 7'. I would also be using shiners or "bullheads" (don't know if their up there) and free lining them...no weights. This will entice the big ones and since you're fooling around with weeds...I'd probably use a 20lb line.

I don't do a lot of fresh water fishing anymore....spend most of my fishing time chasing reds & trout on the flats thus, I've become intimate with learning to tie on 40,50 & 60lb monofiliment leaders (no swivels) due to breakoffs trying to control fish around oyster beds, mangroves, etc. ....something you may consider if you start losing fish due to the weeds. If your live bait is in the area of 4-6" I'd use a 2/0 hook (non-stainless steel). GL
