Didnt someone here live for a time in Hawaii? marine? Cant for the life of me remember who it was. Anyway, in the process over the next couple of weeks making our honeymoon reservations would love to get some opinions from local guys on day trips that we shouldnt miss out on, local restaurants, out of the way tours - stuff like that. Generally the two of us just hate doing stuff right out of the guidebook because I know its going to be me and 9999 other joes with the same book looking up at the same thing. Hate that.

Spending one week on Lanai and one week on the Big Island - Kona Coast - middle of October.

Thanks!

yea, it was me. I will be in touch with you via email soon. Probably monday morning I will shoot you one.

Just been pretty busy getting ready to move down by you.

I was in hawaii for just about 2 years. Been away from there for a year, but I think I can steer you in the right direction on any island you go to.

any more than 2 days on the big island and you'll be bored shitless. charter a boat and do some marlin and tuna fishing for 1 day and drive around the whole island the next day then skip around the other islands the rest of the time. imo, the long ass flight makes the whole trip NOT worth it. personally, i wouldn't go back for free air and suite with $2000 spending money, but that's me. congrats on the upcoming wedding.

mama, i didn't go there for a honeymoon but what's the difference?

oh, btw, my trip *WAS* free air, room, food, the fishing trip and a few other things. still have been to just as nice places within driving distance from me. i just think hawaii is wayyyyyyy over-rated and the flight was a killer. the flight was a killer, the flight was a killer. not to mention they ran out of beer 2 hours into the flight.

did i mention the flight was a killer? :D

big difference in my book....LOL!! on a honeymoon, you should be able to create your own entertainment and not have to depend on any outside influences ;)

oh, and yes, you did mention that the flight was a killer :D

(kinda like my trip home from Vegas that took 18 hours) at least the kids didn't burn the house down or kill each other before i made it home.....

Well first class airfare was cheap as hell, so free drinks for 11 hours, well, thats not unbearable in my book. Among other things we are going to do, we worked with guys when we worked for Nasa/JPL that will be able to get us a couple of days at the observatories on Mauna Kea.

Frankly I dont think I have ever traveled with someone who could go to a place like Hawaii and be bored after two days. I have at least a dozen dives I want to do there, to say nothing of the golf courses. What kind of a crackhead does it take to get bored of a place like Hawaii ;)

But hey, to each his own

if i remember correctly, the flight from chicago was THIRTEEN hours and it takes about 2 hours to get there from dc. way too long a flight for me, drinks or not. and, on my flight they ran out of beer within 2 hours. on the way home i didn't feel like drinking.

yea, to each his own.

there's just as much to do and more in your own back yard. why hawaii??

there you go again, ace. i SAID "the big island" is boring. i thought you wanted honest opinions, right? well, i thought i'd give you mine. sorry!

Hey man I was just busting on you. No place in my own backyard I would want to spend two weeks - and we both love Hawaii. We've done Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe in the past 4 years. Hawaii is worth the flight if you spend the time there to make it worthwhile - especially if you have an extra $600 to go with...;) If you dive, play golf, hike, love the beach - do all that stuff. Otherwise yup its probably pretty boring, but what the heck would you do on vacation if you didnt do that kind of stuff? Conde Nast this year said Lanai has the #1 rate golf resort in the world, cant argue with that and we're staying at the #3 on Hawaii, shit two weeks of golf like that is once in a lifetime. Thats worth a bit of discomfort in flights at least if youre golf nuts like us.

Al right dude,
Kona side of the big island -

Actually, the entire big island is a big fricking rock in the water. Hope you have a nice hotel room with a comfy bed to screw each other in.. ;)

Plenty of places to hike around over there. I would recommend against a rental car, unless you want to just suffer the headache for one day and do a lap around the island. CUz the roads are for CHIT over there. Actually some of the roads you have to sign release forms from the rental agency absolving you of coverage if you drive on them.
Its all freakin lava rock over there. You can get out and walk up Mt Kiluea or whatever its name is. Caution: After walking one mile of it, it all looks the same.

Please ensure you stay on all marked trails. We hiked it once and my buddy's hat blew off his head, he chased it over the guard rail, slid down 80 feet and held onto a tree branch while the flight for life rescue chopper came and got him. (Yep, true story, he was the one that made Letterman's 10 dumbest things ever list about 2 years ago)
You can go to the resorts and swim with the dolphins and a handful of decent places to eat.
Dont look at the map of the island and go "HEY, Lets go to the other side of the island and see what Hilo is like!" You are white, you will be stabbed.

Honestly dude, I spent a week on the big island and freakin hated it. One of my buddies spent a week there and rented a harley and drove up and down the Mt. and in all the state parks and had a blast.

Lanai -
Will get back on that one... have to try and find my picture book.

Why the hell did you choose the big island instead of Ohau?

Thanks to one of my friends at JPL, we've got an opportunity to get some over the shoulder observing time at Keck and Muana Kea for a couple days, which is just just something people dont get to do. We've rented a Jeep for the week, go the same word from him on the roads and besides 4x4 is a requirement to drive up to the observatories on Muana Kea. But theres 2 day hikes we want to do, couple days up on the mountain, 3 - 4 rounds of golf I know we'll keep busy. We dont want big cities, wanted pretty much the most remote, quiet places we could find. Lodge at Koele on Lanai fits that to a T. Tons of cool stuff to do there as well, it got good reviews from one couple we know that spent a week there.

oh god, ANOTHER reminder that *I* now owe you $600. trust me, Phil, I'll get it out as soon as I get back home in Maryland. I'll get home late sunday night and will probably get to the post office monday or tuesday, okay? i'll send it to the address on your check, okay?

back to that big island. i had fun but it was for 2 days and maybe a half day before we left. fishing trip was a blast, we took the drive around the whole island and made many stops along the way to hike to falls, the volcano and a sugar cane field was neat too. wasn't bored one bit that day. went to a comedy club, ate at decent restaurants, hit the pool at the hotel, took a helicopter ride and went shopping down town or wherever that place was. i don't dive but if i did i wouldnt have gone because when we were there they had about a half dozen tiger shark attacks and i wasnt with people that golfed and i havent been on the golfing scene regularly for many years anyway so nothing missed there.

but, none of all that was worth it because of the 15 hour flight. :D

have fun, slick.

oh, and i don't do and never have done crack.

Jack do you remember where you did the fishing trip from? Definitely would want to look into that.
going by my bad memory and it was in 95 that i was there, i think there's a village or town about 3/4 of the way down on the west coast looking at a map. we got the info from a hotel brochure. there was quite a few charters to choose from, so you can't miss it when you're there. 4 of us went and i was the only one that caught a fish (126 pound tuna) but the whole ride and trolling with the dolphins diving in the wake was too cool. bring plenty of beer and lunch. we booked a whole day but had them take us back in after about 5 hours, maybe 6. i know the tuna was small but for me the biggest fish i ever caught and it took 45 minutes to get him in. something i'll never forget.

now THAT was worth the flight! NOT! :D

That sounds awesome. I remember the first time I went Marlin fishing in Mexico, I got a little guy on there, probably about that weight. I figured shit I seen this on TV how hard can it be. 30 minutes later I wanted to give up, what the hell is worth this. Little fvcker broke the leader 20 feet from the boat. I got his brother later on, but chit, that stuff is NOT as easy as it looks.
