I have never hunted anything in my life. Shot a bird with a pellet gun when I was a young teen, helluva shot too, and was mortified. That being said, nearly all of my friends hunt and I have gone with them on many occasions and just hung around and camped or fished while they were hunting. I would also do all the cooking of whatever they shot, as far as duck, pheasant, dove, rabbit, etc..., nothing that needed processing unless to cut the back strap out and cook that. Also, I fish on numerous tournament circuits (Bass only) and do not ever eat fish. While I can only imagine what it would be like to be sitting in my Lazy Boy eating Cheet-os out of the bag, watching the Bears game and suddenly get yanked out through my roof by a hook in one of the puffs, I go to great lengths and much expense to ensure the least amount of stress is put on the fish. If not in a tournament and only fishing for fun then the fish is rarely taken out of the water or even touched. I absolutely guarantee that my hunting friends and SixFive have done a great deal more in the way of habitat conservation than the average non outdoorsman. These are the parks and lakes and woods that all the population can enjoy. I think it is incredibly irresponsible and narrow minded for anyone to classify all hunters, anglers, outdoorsman and such, as barbarian, uncivil, or redneck. I do not hunt and have no desire to do so, but I am all for hunting and understand what overpopulation can do to an area. I wonder if all those that didn't hunt would be against killing a puppy killing coyote or big cat (puma, bobcat, mountain lion which is really a puma) if it their ole Shep that got killed? Try driving down to Lake Amistad from Fort Worth and getting on that highway anytime after dark and see if you don't think culling is necessary. It's down right dangerous.

Justin,
Sorry no trophies to report but did weigh in my first thirty pound plus stringer in a tournament two weeks ago (Five fish limit)

Hope that helps,

FDC

Again, NONE of these guys are hunting to 'conserve the habitat', or 'thin the herds'.

They all hunt for their own selfish reasons and you know it. They just use that shit as an excuse....

Chad,
That is simply not true and to tell you the truth that is a rather irresponsible statement. While I agree that you have a right to your opinion on hunting, don't group everyone into that. Just as there are degenerate gamblers there are recreational gamblers and professional also. All vastly different, and yes they do hunt for all those reasons. That I can assure you and when I say habitat conservation, I mean exactly that. If you care to do some research look up in the Dallas Morning News or Fort Worth Star Telegram about the developer that cut down hundreds of trees that was public habitat and was prosecuted and fined. My Bass club along with many others spent an entire weekend replanting those trees and other shoreline vegetation. All time and labor was volunteered by local anglers and hunters. While I understand it isn't a golf course and thereby of no use to you but please try to remember that the links you play on used to be home to hundreds and thousands of wildlife creatures that were summarily displaced and pushed out so you could pursue your hobby. So who is really doing more damage to the local flora and fauna? The hunter that takes a buck and two does a year, or the golfer that destroys their homes and habitat in pursuit of nothing more than a hobby? Just sayin...

Hope this helps,
FDC

Justin,
Yea I was pretty darn excited about it, was an unbelievable day. Thanks for the good luck wishes and the same right back at ya.

Agent, I have read your posts for a good while and actually backed you up a few times. (if not in my posts, just read yours and agreed). But you are really looking like a closed minded person here. If you don't agree with hunting fine, but don't make hunters out to be murderers. You sound really bitter for some reason. I come from a family of hunters and have hunted for many years. We eat everything we hunt. I also hunt with a group that donates over a 250 lbs. of meat to homeless shelters every year. I think I am doing a good deed for many people and don't ask for any recognition. The meat is donated anonymously. Just saying.

By the way, I have no "trophies" or "heads" on the wall, Just so you know. Some of you go ahead and read my location and insert random southern redneck joke here...............

amazing post. :com:

Here's what's happened the last 10 years on my 100 acre farm.

1) 4 deer have been killed by hunters (all were consumed).
2) 0 quail have been killed by hunters.
3) 0 rabbits have been killed by hunters.
4) 1 wild turkey has been killed by hunters (eaten the same day it was killed).
5) 3 squirrels have been killed by hunters (all eaten).
6) Approximately 10 acres of woods has been cleared or select cut for the benefit of wildlife.
7) More than 100 brush piles have been made for the benefit of wildlife.
8) 15 acres has been converted from fescue grass to clover, native grasses, and annual crops all for the benefit of wildlife.
9) Two beehives have been established and maintained on the farm.
10) > 200 deer have been within range/able to be harvested that were not.
11) Approximately 50 people have been given permission and enjoyed nature by hiking, hunting, picking blackberries, picking turnips, trail riding with atvs, sledding in the winter, picking hickory nuts, camping, nature walks, girl scout troop nature events, genseng hunting, etc.
12) Thousands of hours have been spent at the farm by people in the above activities.
13) I don't have study numbers, and we're only talking about 100 acres here, but trail cam data suggests that the deer population is up more than 50% since the purchase of this farm. Quail numbers are cyclical but up, and turkey numbers are also up.

Some more wildlife friendly facts made possible by hunters via license fees, volunteer work, and for the most part, volunteer funding of wildlife restoration:

1) In 1960, there were 1,000 estimated wild turkeys in the state of Kentucky. Today, there are over 200,000.
2) In 1960, whitetail deer only existed in Mammoth Cave national park and the Land Between the Lakes areas of Kentucky. Today, every county in Kentucky has an established deer herd, and it is estimated that there are over 750,000 statewide.
3) 1n 1997 a volunteer organization began to reestablish the elk herd in Kentucky. The last known elk in Kentucky was seen in 1850. Today, there are over 5,000 living in the wild.

Let's hear what the board hunting bashers have done for wildlife on property they own. I'm very interested.

I agree with chickenman and SixFive. Hunters should care about the land more than the average person, because they need the land. Although I could never hunt myself, I believe that everyone who eats meat should have to hunt and kill what they are going to eat at least once. I bet there would be many less meat eaters!! If you are going to eat an animal, the most respectable way to do it is the traditional way - hunting. That way, you are in touch with the whole process...the killing, the processing, the cooking, and finally the eating. Most people are so far removed from this reality, it is really sad. Now the majority of our meat comes from factory farms and packaged in a styrofoam containers, and we couldn't be less in touch with the process of life and death.

I actually agree with what you guys above me said also. More than anything I was just testing a few of you to see where you stood. I am grateful to hear that you all hunt so responsibly, please continue to do so!

I hunted for more years than I have not hunted. From the time I was old enough to walk beside my Dad and Uncles and carry a plastic gun. Every Thanksgiving and Xmas, and plenty of days in between. We always ate what we killed, that's why we were hunting. I made the personal decision several years ago not to hunt anymore, but happy hunting to those that do it right.:grins:

Are you actually insinuating or stating that Hunters and such have a greater responsibility to practice good conservation habits than those that don't hunt because the meat they eat is harvested from that land rather than a farm somewhere on the other side of the country? Like somehow, those that hunt need to tidy up after those that don't because they "should because they need to keep Bambi alive" and you don't feel that vegetarians don't need the land to be fruitful? Are you kidding me? Tell me do you thing "there would be a lot less people eating cantaloupe when they found out what it takes to raise it? Do you eat cantaloupe? Do you reap and sow everything you eat? If not, don't you think that you are as equally responsible to the environment as the rest of us that pay the same taxes, breathe the same air, and have to PAY STEEP FEES to be able to harvest wildlife for meat.

You know HH I generally agree with you on most points and although you thought I was taking shots at you some time ago which was completely untrue, however you told me you took offense and I have not addressed you since, but I couldn't let this one go. YOU ARE NOT THE MORAL CONSCIENCE OF THIS FORUM!! How dare you tell me or anyone that the hobbies they legally partake in are just sad. Who the heck are you to assume that people are removed from any process simply because they differing colonic desires than you?!?! Do you realize how pretentious that is? Seriously, the more I read your completely condescending post the more incensed I get with the unbelievable display of ignorance. How the heck you think the human species survived and evolved? Or are you still looking for an ark stuck in a mountain somewhere? I am sorry if this seems a bit harsh, I truly am, but more and more I am noticing that your posts have become increasingly judgmental and self absorbed. They all seem to tell everyone what is wrong with them anymore. I will tell you that I think you are certainly one of the more intelligent posters on here and again I apologize if this seems harsh, but that is one of the worst, most vain, hypocritical, and pretentious posts I have ever read. At this point I think I fully understand your position on hunting, hypocritical. Now I hope you have the time for me to pass judgment on on your life choices.

You sir, are a sad & pathetic human being then.

An absolutely vile practice.

:nono: :nono:

People should be allowed to have their own opinions without getting attacked personally for them.
It is obvious that you have nearly no reverence for life,
I think it is fine to have opinions but
The first quote is 3 pricks calling justin a pathetic human being just for asking if anyone was hunting in the woods this weekend. You do not call that personal? And you say
I have no reverence for life because I hunt wild game for sport and food.
3 Pricks thinks I am a hick becuase I hunt and am from Oklahoma. He was the one that came into this thread attacking becuase his little furry friends were getting shot at.

Chad,
I have always been a judgmental prick, as I said "I have noticed her posts becoming increasingly judgmental". I am not calling her any names nor insulting her, just making a personal observation and stating my opinion. Isn't that what she did? Isn't that what you did? Isn't that what everyone is supposed to do on a forum? I believe I also said she is entitled to an opinion, just not entitled to pass judgment on others hobbies as if she is the moral conscience of anything. Who is she, or anyone for that matter, to say that one group of citizens should assume more responsibility for public habitat than another? The post is ridiculous and, IN MY OPINION, if you looked past your own personal considerations and actually read what the post is insinuating then you would see it also. It is a very self absorbed and grandiose post as well as extremely pretentious. I think sometimes people get internet forums and real life confused. Nobody is in a position to make that kind of statement about any of our citizens. To suggest that if you don't hunt down your own food you shouldn't be allowed to eat meat????????? Are you kidding me? Then until she plants a garden that will completely sustain here throughout her life and tills that garden herself, her opining is ridiculous and hypocritical. Period. It is. Face it. You are not defending the correct side you are just defending your friend which is fine, but I was in no way being judgmental. I was just applying common sense to the subject rather than saying something as stupid as saying I need to go hunt down a friggin chicken so I can eat a few buffalo tenders for chrissakes. One of the most ridiculous statements ever posted on here. In my opinion of course.

Hope this helps,

FDC

FDC you completely misread my post. I never meant that hunters have a greater responsiblity to the earth than anyone else. Where exactly did I say that?

I have planted many gardens in my life. What does raising a canteloupe have to do with killing an animal? Although I've never done it, I venture to guess that it would be a lot harder for some people to shoot and skin an animal than to pluck some green beans from a plant.

Thanks for pointing out that I am not the moral consciense of the forum. I have never thought that I am. I was trying to praise hunters in my post, but you completely manipulated my words. I NEVER said people need to hunt down all their food to eat, give me a break. I did say they should have to do it once. I had to cut the heads off chickens when I was younger, and seeing them run around alive with no heads certainly changed my perspective.

What hobby that you partake in did I say was sad? I said it is sad that we are so removed from the process of life and death - the natural cycles of animal and plant food. I don't see how you can say we aren't removed from the process - we shop in stores where everything is packaged and most of the food is processed. It is not pretentious to think that, it is a fact. I shop in the same stores, and it makes me sad. If you want to call this evolution, fine. I think it is de-volution...we are less in our natural state now than we were long ago. Some of our natural instincts have been wiped away by technology.

I don't see how my post on hunting was hypocitical at all. I was simply trying to praise hunters for being more in touch with the earth, and thus being natural conservationists.

I have no idea how my post was vain and pretentious. If you knew me, you would realize that I am a very humble non-judgmental person. I don't really care what people do with their lives. To each his own. Obviously you just don't get me at all, which is part of the reason I asked you before to stop addressing me in your posts.

I'm done with this now. Pass all the judgment you want on my life choices - you don't know me, so it really doesn't bother me.

Good luck with your angst.

Read this slowly you dolt of a human. I said he was a vile & pathetic human being for saying he would hunt basically tame animals inside of a pen, NOT simply for being hunter.

God you really are dumb.

Its BECAUSE, not becuase.

You dont end sentences with prepositions either in the English language. (at)

Spend a little less time in the junkyard & humping your rifle & go back & get your G.E.D..

I actually have had a run in with a deer.

I still dont want them killed. Maybe if we left them some more of their natural habit, we would be hitting them with our cars.

3seconds,
It's habitat..............since we are checking spelling and all.............so is this the appropriate time to make an incredibly childish, stereotypical insult about your choice of household objects that you may or may not have sex with, only to top it off by saying you never got out of the fifth grade? Was just curious if that was the rule now, you know, since you just did it?

Hope this helps,

FDC

I find you assuming. The fact that you have the nerve to call someone else childish is very rich. Keep up the comedy. It's appreciated.

Since we want to talk about new rules, is one that you get involved with things that have nothing to do with you? Are you everyone's new big brother? Feel the need to defend the weak? Aww, do you want to be a superhero...how cute FDC.

Go back to doing whatever it is you do (I think that has something to do with making up shit) & stay out of things that don't involve you.

Or is that too much to ask?

It's a public forum chief. I think that qualifies as having to do with me, being that I am a tax paying member of the public. I am glad you find my post to be childish when you are the one that somehow turned this into some type of Marvel Comic. The insult you made was a geographical stereotype, which makes it childish. Since you were the one diagramming sentences, you should note that the subject of the sentence was the insult, not you my vain friend.
Besides, it is my business as I am on the other side of your argument and I don't hunt and never have. Nothing you have said so far makes much sense to be quite honest with you. You have done nothing but sling insults at people that are on the other side of the argument and haven't made a single statement relative to the discussion yet. Your argument seems to be that anyone that doesn't agree with you and lives anywhere south of St. Louis is an uneducated sodomite, so in keeping with that...............blow me. How's that for childish Father Manning?
