The Hydro is a water pill. I was on that for 20+ years and taken off it because my sodium was low. Everyone is different.

I've been on meds since I was 21 when I was in the best shape of my life as a collegiate athlete.

The important thing to realize is that it's the downstream effects of long-term hypertension that are dangerous...kidney damage, heart damage, etc. The good thing is that with proper control you will be no worse for the wear.

I am surprised he jumped right to medicating yuo, since you were borderline high, blood pressure varies all day long. That was one point in time. When mine was borderline high I had to wear a cuff for 24 hours that took measurements at set times so he could get a good look at my daily fluctuations. Yes it was a huge pain in the ass but medicating is also not to be taken lightly. The other thing is that with diet improvement (you mentioned it as well) you could control that without meds. Once you start on the meds there is little chance of coming off them.

Some docs will day that long term diuretic use can cause kidney damage itself. A nephrologist (kidney specialist) told me that and I guess my most recent physician agrees because he dropped my HCT dose from 25 mg like you to 12.5mg. I'm not trying to freak you out at all it's in all likelihood safe, however if you can control it with some diet and exercise it really is the best thing. Sorry for the diarrhea of the mouth but since I have it I've read up a lot over the years.

Best of luck

Been on the meds for 25 years. Pop an Altace in the morning and I'm good to go.

I can't believe he put you on BP med right away without giving you a chance to lose the weight and not go on them. You are on them for life now.

Where it is real F ing COLD
I do not have HTN but I have administered and assessed many who do.. Did your MD say this..

1. Exercise- cardio vasular. I hate a treadmill and many people do. Try a AMT machine.. Like a ski machine. Great work out and easier on the joints.

2. Diet- Find foods that are lower in sodium. Processed meats and carbonated sodas can easily be avoided.

3. Water water water.. Drink plenty of water. Much better.

**** MANY people who take diuretics are reluctant to take in fluids because urine output is increased. This is a big NO NO!.. Just try to get adequate amounts of water in without having to take anything before bed.. Also I hope he wants you take this med when you get up..

theres so damned much sodium in EVERYTHING WE EAT....most aren`t even aware of it.....

i mean everything is laced with ridiculous amounts of sodium...

that`s why i eat sodium free bread and now i eat unsalted pistachios...

strangely enough,a 7 oz coors light in the evening drops my bp to around 110/70....

That's a great point. Any boxed or prepared food has an unreal amount of sodium in it. It's pretty challenging to cut back with how much salt is around.
