here the deal .
i work for a printing company and i got talking to a local guy about getting some work for our company .
this is just about a lock .
thier other vendor is 3 states away cutting out shipping cost and i know we can beat other place price by 20 percent . it about a 100,000 dollar account .

i'm 99% sure i can pull this in , but i'm just a machine operator .
what do i need to do to bring this in and get paid like a sale person would . it would be huge as it could be repeat year after year ...

thanks for any info ..... :toast:

Just so i understand...

you are not a sales rep for your current company, you are a machine operator

you came across a lead for a nice account for your company

you are trying to create your own sales position and determine your commission under the veil of your company, yet without having the actual sales position

Might be stepping on some big toes there, you might want to chat with your Super first. Sometimes there's a lot more at stake than saving money on one project.

Walk in to the big guys office and say........

"I have X as a potential vendor and as you can see it is a good deal. If you decide to take it I want commission on this."

Done.

If someone walked in my office and said I have a way to save you money - I want money - i will give them money.

You're gonna have to make a presentation to your boss for a 'cut' but I'm sure a salesman is going to have to write the deal.

or switch to being a sales person if that is an option and if you have the sales skills to handle more than this one account and bring more to the table

And there is a huuuuuuuuge risk in doing this.

Quota

Quota

Quota

I'd lay it out straight as joker says from the beginning. Sales people don't play nice... Especially when someone from operations thinks they could do there job.

Be careful.

Happens all the time......if I have employee that comes to me with a big deal and or project like this, I would always negotiate a $$ bonus to them if they can close the deal....., my recommendation to u is to speak to the person in charge of your company...tell them what you have and the two of you work out a deal..... This is not uncommon, happens all the time....good luck

Just make sure the other company is aware your not the decision maker and make sure you have permission from your company to even speak on their behalf.

Had a gal approach our company last fall, talked the talk and lead me to belive she was the dicision maker. Long story short she wasn't, time was wasted, and a potential account blew up because the real decision maker was not part of the orginal talk.

I did sales years ago and would always kick people something for getting me sales leads like these. I would just look for a sales guy you are friendly with and see if you can work something out. Otherwise it could blow up in your face.

ahhhhhhhh...the life of sales.

Coming from "the sales side" here is my take......

If I were you william13 I'd contact someone in sales and give him/her the situation. Try to find out who the best sales person is and call him/her directly. Now keep in mind most successful sales reps are assholes and are cockier then shit. Just a heads up.

Don't give the sales rep any info until ya work out a deal.

Reason I say all this is because the reverse happened to me. I was in sales and one day I got a phone call from a guy in the service department. I said I'd give him 65 percent of the deal if I close it and 50 percent of the deal if I increase the sale by 30 percent or more.

Long story short, we agreed. He gave me the "down low" and said the deal would be worth about 50K. Three months later I did the deal for 172 grand and gave him half of the commission.

Win/Win for both.

Of course this can totally backfire but one thing you don't want to do is piss off the sales staff. We can be resentful fuckers.

Just my two cents.

And as stated above....quota...quota...quota. You will be amazed what a sales dude will do to meet quota. Wait until end of the quarter and a sales guy will lick your ass to get ten bucks if that means he meets his quota (bonus).

William,

Great advice here. Talk to the rep who owns the territory and work something out. Any rep worth a shit will kick out when a deal closes from a blue bird. If you go it alone and close the deal..you don't work in sales and you probably won't get anything (perhaps an atta boy). I am not sure how big your company is but when a deal closes there is somebody doling out the commission. Typically it's somebody in finance who looks at a spreadsheet based upon territory and checks the box and the rep gets paid. In most cases they don't have visibility into the nuances of what it took to close the deal. You can also reach out to the VP of sales or a regional exec if you don't trust/know the rep.
