Astros to activate Norris from DL to start Monday

(AP)?The Houston Astros plan to activate right-hander Bud Norris(notes) from the disabled list in time to start Monday?s game at Milwaukee.

Norris (2-5, 6.80 ERA) has been on the DL since he received a cortisone shot after being diagnosed with biceps tendinitis following his last start for the Astros on May 23.

The Astros have an open spot on their roster after they designated right-hander Josh Banks for assignment Sunday.

Banks was called up to start Saturday against the Rangers, replacing injured Felipe Paulino (right shoulder tendinitis). Banks gave up six runs and eight hits in four-plus innings of a 7-2 loss.

Norris had a 3.06 ERA in three rehabilitation starts for Triple-A Round Rock.

He is scheduled to go against Brewers left-hander Manny Parra(notes) (2-5, 3.83).

Norris returns to Astros rotation

The return of Bud Norris (RHP, HOU) to the starting rotation tonight means one less spot for peripheral starters Brian Moehler (RHP, HOU) and Josh Banks (RHP, HOU). Neither pitcher brings skills nor the promise of skills to the rotation, and it is likely Moehler stays simply as a matter of greater experience. His PQS-DOM/DIS (0%/33%) in six starts to date exemplify his fanalytic mediocrity. The younger Banks has managed a 2.97 ERA in 97 IP at AAA-Round Rock this season, but as we have seen in the past, he does not possess the DOM needed, even at the minor league level (3.2 in 2010), to succeed. Regardless, the pitcher who remains now leaves when Felipe Paulino returns.

Despite the small inning sample, Norris had started to show some signs of his potential in May, maintaining a significant DOM (10.7), reducing his CTL (4.5), and increasing his GB rate (43%). These improvements are hidden behind a season ERA of 6.80, more than 2.50 points higher than his xERA (4.14). Assuming his time off does not throw him completely out of whack, Norris could produce a solid second half of the season.
