Background checks on the web?

Any place on the web to get free background checks?

I remember a while ago my wife calling from her office with a little surprise from my past.

I guess her and the nosey broads she works with were plugging names into a instant background check site to kill time (on the one day a week she works).

Anyway, I am considering changing companies and the paperwork the new company gave me to fill out asks:

Have you ever been convicted of a crime (misdemeanor or felony) other than traffic violations?

I'm not sure how to answer this one and I'm afraid it could affect my options. Maybe I should just round file the application and stay where I am at, might be easier than explaining.

Any reliable free background check sites out there, I'd like to know exactly what it says.

Mornin' Penguin,

Mornin' Penguin,

Before I retired, I managed a branch for a national brokerage firm and we routinely had these questions, and subsequent investigations, for any serious applicants.

Three rules to remember in this situation:

1 Full Disclosure
2 Full Disclosure
3 Full Disclosure

They WILL find anything back there.

The fact that it was there was not necessarily a deal-killer with us.

If anyone "forgot" to disclose, it virtually ALWAYS was a deal-killer.

Good luck with your job hunt.

Pat

Thanks, good advice.

Long story short is it is something that shouldn't be there, I agreed to PWV on a misdemeanor charge and should have no record at all.

I don't want to put it on the application if I don't have to, if I have to I will, but would rather avoid the discussion if I could.

Thanks again for the first hand knowledge.

If it's really something that should not be there, you can contact the courthouse where it happened and appeal it to have it removed.

Another thing.....

Another thing.....

If it was a misdemeanor, especially if it's a long ways back, it's probably a bigger deal in your mind than it will be in theirs.

We didn't pay a helluva lot of attention to anyone's misspent youth, seeing as most of us were happy we didn't get caught.

Also, no need to put it in bold print, highlight it, and draw arrows pointing to it. Just state it simply with the bare facts.

Much like Saint said.....

I had a guy working for me for a bit, mid twenties. He had been arrested and gone to court for multiple charges including selling drugs and gang activity. Never got prison time but served a bit in our world famous Cook County lockup at 26th and Cal. He now wanted to get a gig with the US gone Postal Service (fitting) and he needed to have a clean record. He said he was in the process of clearing up all the stuff on his record. The kicker is, I know he wasn't paying a penny for all this, just making appearances and a lot of paper pushing. But he was going to get it done. That was here though.

I use a company similar to this for background checks when trying to fill a rental property. Get an account (mine cost $25) and then do a check on yourself. The check costs $32. So, for your own peace of mind, it might cost $57 or so....but at least you'll know.

As the first response says...don't lie. The worst thing you could have is to be hired, then fired for not disclosing the prior conviction. I have a DUI on my record, and wasn't sure if I needed to disclose it or not...so I did. Tehy never said a word. I have a friend in HR and she says that they usually don't care, unless it is something scary.

Gm, cant you save him a little money and do this for him? Kinda like a barter agreement where what you find you have the option to let us all see it? I would love to see what kinda shit Pengy was into. I can see it now. Maybe one or two disorderly conducts stemming from a dui.:SIB

The little guy at the end with the glasses means its a joke? Im sure Pengy knows im kidding IE. I really don't need to know his business and like i said im sure he knows that since we have a nice relationship it was a JOKE. I have a disorderly conduct fine which was almost from a dui that is why i said that.

Sponge, since you have to know:

I once hunted down a complete asshole from an internet forum and shot him execution style as he begged for his worthless life.

After reading all the posts on the forum in question the judge let me plead down to justifiable homicide.

Two years probation and $1000 fine.

a background was done on me a year ago and a charge popped up from 1978. "operating as a corporation without the license to do so". wtf? i went to court back then, when i was 23 years old, and WON because I DID have the license and that damn thing is STILL on my record. and it's on my record without the proper clarification that i WON!

Peng, someone posted awhile back about something called a Zaba search. I remember there was stuff about backround checks but that cost a little, but not much. I remember back then i was amazed at what i could find out about myself. That little charge(justifiable homicide) you might be worried about it but I don't think it will be that big of thing. That guy probably deserved it.
