1 more day to go and then look out Bambi. :firing:

Here is a quick story about how lucky i have been so far right before the season opens.

I couldnt get off work but the wife could so I told her to go and have fun. She is hunting with friends about 5 hrs from here. I could have went but its just way to far to drive for a weekend. So at the last minute I decided on a area about 2 hrs from here that I would try. I looked all over the net found the public hunting grounds but couldnt find a detailed map showing snowmobile/atv trails entering the woods. I needed that because I planned on getting up there 1 hour before sun up and was needing something to walk in on so I wouldnt get lost. I was getting completely frustrated by Wed night at not finding anything so I posted on a different site asking if anyone knew of trails on public land.

A couple of hours later I got a response from a person saying he owned 20 acres in the area I was looking at and he didnt hunt so I was welcomed to hunt the land. I damn near fell over. I called him yesterday and he explained that he lives out of state and the land hasent been hunted in years. He didnt want anything for letting me hunt there. (But I can see a thank you package heading his way with sticks and jerky after the season is over) No one else has permission to be on the land so its 20 acres to myself.
I got the directions along with info on where the boundries are last night and he e-mailed me a letter with his permission to hunt the land that included his phone number. (I did a reverse phone look up to make sure it was legit..I have talked to him on the phone so I know the number is good)

This area is completely surrounded by private land so the pressure on the deer should should be at a minnimum. Unlike public land where there are thousands of hunters crammed in a area.

So it looks like I am off to a lucky start for the season. Hopefully it holds out when the monster buck walks in front of me.

Even if I dont see a thing I figure a weekend sitting in the woods is better than any weekend sitting at home wishing I was there.

So to everyone going into the woods this weekend...be safe and I hope you bag the big one. :mj14: :mj14:

Its over for me. Our season started last Saturday and it was like a hurricane out there. 40-50 mph wind both days and the deer weren't moving at all. Daughter comes in town tonight, so no more firearm hunting for me this year.

A friend of mine bagged a 186 gross with a bow about 3 weeks ago.

Good Luck and would like to hear any good stories you might have from your hunt.

Congratulations on finding your little pot of gold bubba. Like winning a small lottery. I'm sure you consider yourself very, very fortunate  Hope you're this lucky with your wagers ;)

Never did quite understand why you boys in Wisconsin consider it "hunting" though? Scoped rifles and 400 yard shots. Come down here in Illinois where we "hunt" :mj07: Rifled slugs with a max of 100 yards (though not many would attempt a shot that far)

j/k ......you know I'm envious as hell. GL on your hunt and let us know how everything went :mj14:

On the course!
I got 7 this year in the "Death Pool". That Vang fella really fukced the pool up good last season. Plenty of guys screamed "fix", but the book wasn't having any of it.

The lucky streak lives on.
I got a call today from a guy I know that was traveling thru the area so I gave him the directions and had him check it out for me. Here is his take on the property.

He found it with no problem and put out a couple of ribbons at the entry way so I wouldnt have a problem finding it in the dark. The trail going into the woods is well defined so no problem of getting lost. He found where the property starts and put up another ribbon for me. He kept walking and right in the middle of the trail was 2 huge does. They were both bedded down and he got pretty close before spooking them. They got up and trotted a little ways and then just walked off the trail into the woods. He found a spot with some good fresh rub marks on the trees and he saw where the ground was pawed up from the deers looking for food. (There is 2-3 inches of fresh snow so it was easy to find) Up went another ribbbon and he said to walk off the trail and hunt there because it should be great. He said all the trees were tall and straight so there will be no problem finding something for the tree climber. They arent thick with crap and I will be able to see far in any direction.

This made me decide to leave tonight instead of 2am. I wouldnt be able to sleep.

So its time to load up the jeep and head out the door. Will post pictures when I get back.

BahamaMama...No worries there. I figure everyone should be on there best behavior this year because of what happened.

I'll let you know next time I'm up there, sounds good.. There's a good chance I'll match in milwaukee. I've heard the wawatosa (sp?) area is nice to live in. I'd have to live w/in 20 mins of the children's hospital.

my guess is that agent isn't being sarcastic at all.... he is more than likely someone that would NEVER hunt or hurt an animal.

I am the same way, although i can also see the hunters point of views and don't have anything against people that DO hunt... just something i could never do myself (except for ex hunting ;) )
