OK, since we seem to be having a "fave" or "best" trend lately, and the Oscars are just around the corner, How about...... Who do you think the best actor/actress is, past or present. Now I don't mean your favorite, I mean the best.=, the truly gifted & unique. I asked my partner who the best was & he said Tom Cruise because he likes his parts & movies. NO, no way. Tom Cruise for the most part plays Tom Cruise. And I liked The Hustler, among others, myself, but I'm after the best actors here with some decent acting stuff under their belts. No jennifer Lopez type answers........because she's hot. (she is)
My vote goes to Dustin Hoffman and I feel that we are all blessed to be able to view his work. I felt he was gonna be special when I first saw him as Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy. He backed that up as a lame student in The Graduate. Then he went on to be Lenny Bruce, a gal in Tootsie and countless other diverse characters. An Indian in Little Big Man, a mobster inBilly Bathgate. Just was utterly fantastic as Raymond in Rain Man and in Pappillon. He is still going strong in Runaway Jury and The Fockers. This is , of course, a partial list. There are counless others, but these are his most diverse and interesting character portrayals.
My next choice would probably be Al Pacino........Michael in the 3 Godfathers,a bank robber in Dog day Afternoon, cop in Serpico, marvelous job as a Miami coke dealer Tony Montana in Scarface. Very, very talented in these. Then there was Insomnia, And he just made me laugh my ass off as Lefty Ruggiero in Donnie Brascoe, even tho it wasn't meant to be a comical part. Coach Tony D'Amato in the football flick On Any Given Sunday........the bleak/desperate And Justice For All, etc, etc.
Maybe Im thinking of Paul Newman as my #3 and he is great. But he hasn't played as many "characters" as Hoffman & Pacino.
OK, I'm done. You guys go next.
