I don't understand this hire either. I thought the best route was to go after a coach that ran an offense similar to Oregon or Auburn. A spread offense but one that ran the ball a high % of the time. If you can't get a big name go after someone that looks like an up and comer.

The Huskers ain't my bag but it seems to me that they went out of their way to hire a congenial guy that can carry on productive relationships with the alumni and press. Bo was a public relations nightmare and they sure were not going to travel that road again.

As far as on the field performance I'd say give him a shot. It was not easy recruiting in the shadow of the Ducks to a campus that most describe as rather blah in general. I think he'll do better in Nebraska.

Initially underwhelmed, guess that means expectations won't be tough to be met. The AD in his firing of Pelini stated he didn't win the "games that mattered", and I agree with that. What games that have mattered has Mike Riley won? No conference championships, no major bowls, just like Pelini. I realize he was at Oregon State and the resources and facilities aren't like Nebraska, and realize all the media is stating its a great hire and that Riley is a great, nice guy. Fine and dandy just doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy feeling. Pelini did a good job of getting Nebraska out of the rut Callahan produced (many would argue that wasn't tough to do), but reached his ceiling. I just see no indication that Mike Riley is the guy to get Nebraska over the hump so to speak to being relevant on the national scene again (heck even the conference scene).

Heard a rumor about trying to get Scott Frost as the Offensive Coordinator and be a Head Coach in Waiting type thing. That would be an interesting move and would make me view it differently, just not sure if that is plausible.

I also noted the almost polar opposite personality to Pelini and wonder if that was a big factor. Coaches and tempers are similar to star QB's and legal troubles. If they are winning, its easy to look past them, when they aren't winning, well then you have issues.

Despite scratching my head I'll definitely give him a shot, and hopefully he proves me wrong. As a season ticket holder, the games weren't getting to be much fun with Pelini on the sidelines. At least now there is the inherit hope that comes along with a new era.

Go from a coach winning 9 games per year to one that can't win the big ones in the PAC12!!

There was no hurry to hire someone right friggin NOW!!

AD is setting himself up for failure!!
