EAGLE, Colo. -- Kobe Bryant was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in a case that is bound to tarnish the career of the NBA superstar.

The 24-year-old Bryant faces four years to life in prison if convicted on the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said during a news conference.

? I made the mistake of adultery. I have to answer to my wife and my God for my actions that night and I pray that both will forgive me. ?
? Kobe Bryant, in a statement released by his attorney

Bryant's Denver-based attorney, Pamela Mackey, has scheduled a news conference at 9 p.m. ET time tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but there is no word whether Bryant will be there. Mackey also released a statement on Bryant's behalf shortly after the announcement.

"I am innocent of the charges filed today. I did not assault the woman who is accusing me," Bryant said in the statement. "I made the mistake of adultery. I have to answer to my wife and my God for my actions that night and I pray that both will forgive me.

"Nothing that happened June 30th was against the will of the woman who now falsely accuses me."

The woman worked the front desk at the resort where Bryant was staying while in the state for knee surgery.

Bryant's wife, Vanessa, also released a statement, saying she stood by her husband. "He is not a criminal," she said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern released a statement Friday afternoon. "As with all allegations of a criminal nature, the NBA's policy is to await the outcome of a judicial proceeding before taking any action," he said. "We do not anticipate making further comments during the pendency of the judicial process."

Hurlbert refused to talk about the details of the case.

He said he reviewed all evidence during the last two weeks and consulted prosecutors around the state before making his decision.

"This did not come easily," he said.

Bryant, free on $25,000 bail, must return to court in Eagle on Aug. 6 for an advisement hearing.

The case has riveted the sports world for nearly two weeks because it involves one of the NBA's brightest and most magnetic young stars.

Bryant, a father of a baby girl, has also used his clean image to land multimillion-dollar endorsement deals.

Documents in the case, including the arrest warrant, have been sealed.

Authorities have said Bryant assaulted the woman June 30 at the gated Lodge & Spa at Cordillera in nearby Edwards. He was in Colorado for knee surgery at a Vail clinic, and was booked at the lodge from June 30 to July 2.

Eagle County sheriff's deputies took Bryant to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs for tests early July 2, later letting him leave in a taxi with his bodyguards.

The woman also underwent tests, and Hurlbert has said he needed information from the state crime lab before making his decision.

Bryant surrendered to authorities July 4 and was released an hour later after posting bond. The sheriff refused to release Bryant's booking photo for days.

The arrest was announced July 6, prompting a firestorm of media attention on this small mountain town 100 miles west of Denver.

Reporters swamped the cul-de-sac where the woman lives with her parents, but she has said nothing publicly. Her family has consulted an attorney.

The news stunned basketball fans: Bryant, a five-time All-Star who has already won three titles with the Lakers, is by most accounts a quiet man who prefers dinner with a few friends to joining teammates for a night on the town.

Sports marketing experts say the case will be a permanent blow to Bryant's image, and could cost him millions in lost endorsements.

Bryant entered the NBA in 1996 at age 18, straight out of high school. He has drawn comparisons to the league's greatest players and helped Los Angeles win titles from 2000-02.

Along with his determination, Bryant has also shown class, something many fans feel are missing from other NBA stars. He wept when the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by San Antonio in May, and he wore his hospital ID bracelet in a game the day after his daughter was born.

He married Vanessa Laine in April 2001. The two met on the set of a music video where Laine was working, and got engaged while she was still in high school. Vanessa gave birth to their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant, in January.

i wonder

i wonder

if there were no such thing as dna if kobie even admits that he had sex with the girl.......he didn`t admit to the sex until after the charges were announced.....

the people that i saw interviewed on t.v. were much more concerned that kobie be able to play this year than whether he raped that girl.......how sad.....

i hate to be cynical, but, just get as many blacks and basketball fans as you can on the jury.....you are bound to find one that will hold out regardless of the evidence....

and of course,he just might be innocent....

Would you say the same thing if Larry Bird was on trial for this. Just get as many whites and basketball fans on the jury and then surely one would hold out.

What you are saying basically is that blacks are stupid, biased, and have no ability to act as effective jurors because they all stick together and would stick up for their fellow "brother."

That is just a racist and stupid comment weasel.

easy

easy

i don`t think so...and i apologized for jumping you in your thread....

i just got through listening to talking heads on t.v. and the big topic was a potential change of venue that would be a little more favorable demographically to kobie....rather than the lilly white venue in colorado where the alleged crime was committed...

it`s not pretty....but it all plays an enormous part in these high profile trials.......

the white/black issue.....the problem with some people having trouble seeing past celebrity....

it`s reality...and it`s a problem...

that`s all i`m saying....

not a racist....but i am a cynic concerning certain issues...

again, sorry for jumping your thread...my bad...

E-Z~I don't understand where you came up with "black people being stupid and biased" from the comment that was made  . He never once sounded racist to me. It would be a pretty smart game plan. I would bet that a basketball fan may hold out for innocence to keep Kobe Bryant playing. I hope not if that girl really was assaulted, but you never know! Any smart defense attorney is gonna pick as many black jurors as possible, in hopes that they will sympathize with him.

I just hate when it is always turned into a black/white issue. Not everyone is a racist.

Listen Helen, he said just get as many blacks and basketball fans on the jury and he will find one for sure that will hold out.

Smart or not, that is racism. By searching for black jurors that is racism in itself whether or not it is the smart thing to do, and unfortunately, it probably is the smart thing to do.

I never said everyone was a racist, but if you think that plenty of people aren't you are living in fantasy land. YES, it is probably smart to get basketball fans and blacks on the jury, but YES THIS IS ALSO RACISM.

And I'm sorry you hate when things get turned into a black white issue, but when the media and forum members are speaking of getting blacks onto the jury because they will vote biasedly (hold out for bryant) then you and they have turned it into a black/white issue, not me.

I never commented on anyone holding out for Kobe. If he did it he should go to jail. I just think that your interpretation of gardenweasel's comment was totally off the mark. You said that he accused blacks of being biased and stupid. I was merely wondering how you came up with that absurd assumption when his statement just said pick blacks. I'll lay a ton of money on Kobe not caring how racist it is if it gets him off!

So, Kobe, a black man, is gonna search for black jurors. He is a racist, right? That's the bottom line. If we were black and made that comment, does that also make us racists. Only because we are white we are racists, huh? Sounds a little racist to me!!!

e.z..

e.z..

i`m very sorry i entered the thread....what can i say....

i basically was just passing on what a judge,a defense attorney and a jury consultant were saying on one of the news outlets.....

the racial aspect of jury selection and the venue of the trial are crucial considerations in such a high priority case...

all it takes is one dissenter, regardless of the evidence... human nature, bias and life experience are powerful influences...

i`m sure kobie`s attorney`s aren`t looking for prior rape victims to assign to the jury...

again, easy money, after re-reading my response i understand why you came back at me...

i think it will be an interesting trial and i don`t want to get off on the wrong foot as i know this will be a topic of discussion in future posts...

i`ll wait for some of the atorney`s on the board to shed a little light on the issue....they are pretty sharp guys...

no offense intended...g.l.

the only reason to pick black jurors is because they would hold out for him. Otherwise there is no reason to search for them. You cannot give me one logical reason to get a black member on the jury other than that they will be biased toward kobe. Why else would the media and everyone else saying it is the smart thing to do.

What this is infering is that blacks regardless of the evidence will be harder to persuade than whites that he is guilty. THAT is why they are suggesting getting black jurors. PERIOD. You cannot give any other possible other explanation as to why weasel and other members of the media are suggesting this is a smart strategy. Unfortunately, as I said earlier, it probably is a smart strategy.

It also happens both ways Helen. When a prominent rich white man gets accused of insider trading or any other white collar crime, don't you think the white lawyers specifically try and find a white jury. Do you think that all their jury selectors want poor black men to try and side with the millions of dollars of insider trading and show sympathy while the poor black men make $30k a year.

Look, all I'm saying and I think what weasel was trying to say is that there is racism in our jury system and it does go both ways.
Personally, I don't care what skin color you are. If you do the crime you should be convicted. Bottom Line, but you cannot dispute the fact that our jury process of being allowed to select jurors can be racist.

thanks,easy

thanks,easy

you hit it on the head.....it`s part of the human condition...and the door swings both ways....i think the attorneys are doing what attorney`s do...looking for any edge they can get.....

should be interesting to see how it all plays out....

unfortunately, both parties will be smeared unmercifully....and one unfairly....

This is just my personal opinion only.........I have a very hard time thinking Kobe Bryant would sexually assault any woman let alone a fronk desk clerk at the hotel he is staying at. That just sounds rediculious to me. I used to work in the hotel business and a big no no was to be in a room with a customer no matter what your excuse was. I just think she is after $$$$........Of course only my opinion.
