I'm greedy... spend it here, where we have taxpayers already suffereing from that disease (or going broke from the medication).

It's OK that you are greedy - you live in SF and I'm sure there are a lot more people their suffering from aids than in the rest of the US...so you probably see it more than the rest of us.

No offense to you and your city - it's a great place!!

Guys, I think you're missing the point. Bush could give a rat's ass about the AIDS epidemic or the people of Africa. This money is a gift of 'our money' to the drug companies, nothing more. The drug companies are major contributors and this is their payback. Two biggest contributors to Bush were oil and gas, and drug companies. Last time I looked, our AIDS czar was a Bush appointee from a major drug company, not some expert on the disease. We're being handled. The monies ($30B) will find their way into the hands of U.S. drug companies that were huge contributors to Bush and/or the Republican party.

These guys (and I'm talking about all politicians, not just the Republcans) don't care about the American people one bit. It's all a dog and pony show. Some time back another forum cited an article that if the U.S. had spent one sixth of the cost of the Iraq war on converting automotibles to ethanol, every car in america could have been converted and we'd have zero need for foreign oil. So, what will be the last thing this government will ever do: convert autos to ethanol of course. The politicans are just front men.

They spent our money (money that should go to the betterment of U.S. citizens) for their own fulfillments. Look at Israel. We've given them so much of our citizen's monies that they can afford to have a $17 minimun wage law and great healthcare. How can a country that we support financially afford what our country can't afford to give it's own citizens ? By stealing monies that should go to american citizens and giving it to israeli citizens. We're being robbed one lie at a time. We're fuked guys. Nothing the citizens of the U.S. can do at this point. Well, we can have insane fights on forums about righty vs lefty crap( or centrist crap if Kosar is within striking distance), but the mechanisms to fix our country don't really pragmatically exist.

Never intended to start posting here again, and I'm not. This is it. I've found I really have no interest in civil discourse. When they find a way where I can reach through the computer monitor and hit someone in the throat with a two by four, I'm back. But until then, my sincerest best wishes.

In my post above, I used the term AIDS czar. Perhaps that was an inappropriate term. The article below is the guy I was thinking of.

Ex-Eli Lilly exec named global AIDS czar
Wednesday, July 2, 2003 Posted: 12:21 PM EDT (1621 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush tapped a former pharmaceutical executive Wednesday to coordinate his administration's $15 billion program to combat AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.

If confirmed by the Senate, Randall Tobias -- the former chairman and chief executive officer of Eli Lilly and Co. -- would head up the administration's efforts to bring more medical workers, medicine and training to those countries hit hard by the virus.

"Millions of lives depend on the success of this effort, and we are determined to succeed," Bush said in announcing his selection of Tobias at the White House.

AIDS, Tobias said, has already killed 20 million people in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is the No. 1 cause of death. He said he would approach his new job with "enthusiasm and with optimism."

The president will travel to Africa next week, and Bush said he will highlight his AIDS initiative on that trip.

The Senate voted in May to approve the global initiative, which will direct $15 billion to fight AIDS abroad over the next five years. It will concentrate on 14 countries in Africa and the Caribbean that have been devastated by the disease.

The Bush plan is modeled after a program in Uganda known as the ABC approach: abstinence, being faithful in marriage and condoms, as the order in which people are told to conduct themselves to avoid contracting the deadly disease.

The AIDS infection rate has fallen dramatically in Uganda, and the percentage of pregnant women with HIV has been cut in half in parts of the country, according to the White House.

Really a valid point, Auspice2. I wish I would have thought of it...have spent some time just going for the laughs in various threads around here in Weasel's absence...

Very astute observation of who will benefit from the Bush "program." Never underestimate what "compassionate conservatives" can accomplish.

Ah crap man. A guy that thinks like me and now he is leaving. I knew it was to good to be true. I like the two by four comment.:mj07: Yes, you feel like that most times just to knock some sense into some guys but like you said we are in a very bad trap and can't seem to get out of it. First time i heard that about Isreal. 17 dollar min wage with health care now that is impressive, and we give them aid. . What can you do tho bud? We are a country of very naive thinking people. Most couldn't spot a con job if someone gave them all the proof in the world. Gonna miss ya.:sadwave:

Why does it matter if the money is spent in Christian nations? Doesn't the bible say "love thine enemy"? (If you consider those of other religions your enemy...)

And sub-Saharan Africa has 24.7 million people affected by aids - which is 5.9% of their populations ages 15-49 (2.1 million died in 2006 - a staggering 5753 PEOPLE per day).

whereas

the Caribbean has 250,000 affected - 1.2% of their population ages 15-49 (19,000 died in 2006).

While Africa has 24.7 million people affected by aids, the rest of the world has 9.8 million.

I think they deserve help from the most powerful country in the world that throws money around for MUCH less valid causes.

I found the numbers that u used on a quick search, but I also found much higher numbers below that. It's a problem nonetheless. I'm willing to help the Africans, but like I said, I have mixed feelings about it. If the goal is to help needy people, 30 billion can make much more of an impact closer to home and to nations who for the most part don't hate us. If given the choice, none of my charity is going to a muslim. I'm not strong enough yet to love all of my enemies. At home, with a coworker I don't like, yes, but abroad to people who are strapping themselves down with bombs and killing others for no reason, no. And, no, I don't believe all other religions are my enemies.

DTB, HIV is spread I believe over 90% by heterosexual contact in the Caribbean. Condoms are not cool to wear, nor for the most part are they available. There's also a lot of HIV spread from mom to baby.

I assure you it is still a great place.

i loved s.f. when i first went there in the mid 80's. i have gone back there about 6 times over the last 20 years & i have found it dirtier. also a few times we had to walk in the street because the sidewalk was so cluttered with people lying around.imo that takes away from the beauty of the city.

btw...i love beach blanket babylon

It's really easy to avoid the homeless in SF. You just have to walk up a hill. They tend to settle in the lowlands.
