A few weeks ago I asked some questions about buying a new honda for my daughter...got some good information here and used it... we bought the car..
Need to bother you guys one more time...on the trade in they offered me $1500 on the 2000 dodge stratus with over 100,000 miles...since we were dealing with two dealers..one in Philly and one in NY..NY had the better deal but didn't see my daughters car..she took pictures of it and sent it to them..the Philly dealer saw the car and offered her the $1500....we told that to the NY dealer and he accepted it... then when we were finalizing the deal...the salesman tells me there are some scratches on the hood and on the trunk..."we can't give you the $1500" the dealer leaves..the manager comes in...salesman comes back..manager leaves..just playing a game..we will give you $1200....it was so BS...I argued but had no leverage because her front brakes were so bad she couldn't go back to Philly....the question I have is...what do they do with that car..I know they don't sell used cars on there lot...green book -blue book is $1500 for a fair-good dodge stratus.. if I listened to my daughter she could of got the car in Philly a little cheaper...do some scratches on the hood really bring the value down...the philly dealer didn't have any problems with it...did I get taken for a few hundres bucks? feels like I did...but I had no backup plan..she needed the car...just wondering what do they do with those cars..? thanks

Thats why car dealers have a bad name . They try to take every last 300 dollars they can especially when they know you are probably not backing out at that point.

I guess you didnt end up talking to the fleet manager.

They take these cars and fix them up and sell them at car auctions. There is another whole
money making market doing that.

No one really talks about the money they rake in doing that.

at least she will be safe driving now. its worth what you went through.

Above the Clouds....
I was trading in a 97 buick on a new car in 04. They offered me $300 trade on a new car?

I bought the new car but kept the 97 also. I drive it in the winter and it still looks new.

You got a good deal getting $1200.

Yep, they auction them.

Our car is 10 years old now--only 59,000 on it--will keep it another year. With the gas thing would not know what to buy. Looking at a Ford escape hybrid?? Scary right now.

Vegas Baby !!
They will either 'wholesale' it to a small used car lot, or just take it to the 'hoop', (auction).

Don't worry about the $300 !!

On the course!
The best thing you can do, is have one of those magnets made to stick on the back of her new car that reads:

"I'll never buy another car from ____________!"

People will ask you what that is about, and you can tell them.

thanks guys...It's not the $300....i just feel I got played..with the manager walking in..then out...the salesman coming in...another guy coming in...walking out.."let's see what we can do"...I'm just out of my element...they agreed on a price..I agreed..then something happened in the bottom of the 9th...I filled out the survey the other day from Honda...not that it has any effect...the irony is if I listened to my daughter we should of bought the car at Concelli Honda in Philly... I would of saved $200...plus her driving the car up here and driving back to Philly..
Scott,I did talk to the fleet manager..he said this was the best price you were getting...and he was right..I guess the honda civic is a "hot" car so they can't deal as much...
good news is...my buddy who was going the same honda dealer ended up buying a "cobalt" instead of a civic. He had a trade in also and mentioned he didn't like what they did 2 weeks to his buddy{me}...don't think that was a major factor but he let them know....so I'll take a little credit in steering him away..."word of mouth" is what I told them in my survey...you got my $300...I'll tell 299 others what you did....
thanks for the info guys...

Box, I wouldn't worry about the 300 buddy...

But to let u know if u walked out they would have stopped u and gave u the full 1500, it is just a game they play.

I don't know how high in 100,000 miles range that car was, but if it 130 or less it would do every bit of at least 1500 or more at the dealer auction, as long as the tranning and motor run sound. they don't care about scratches, and dings as much for buy here/pay here lots.

As a general rule, trading in a car is not a good move. Just negotiate your lowest price and throw your used car up on Craigslist. Whatever they tell you they are giving you for the used car is all fixed in the price somewhere.

Not that I begrudge them for this. They have to turn a profit on getting that car in their possession.

At least you're not saying, "They gave me what I wanted for my trade in." I always laugh when someone says that.

so they can same some for the other rip-off that comes next insurance

It's only a rip-off if they don't pay what they owe come claim time!

NEVER had someone complain about rebuilding their $400,000 house and $300,000 worth of contents for a $800 policy.

Why the phuck SHOULDN'T they?

..........................................................

they shouldnt because thats short term profit.

Box still has 298 people more to tell. And overall that hurts business for futre sales.

And he just told about 1000 more at madjacks.

He should give us the dealers fax number and we can all fax them a big ....

STOP RIPPING PEOPLE OFF YOU DIRTBAGS !

They would shit if they were coming if from all over the country.

I have been selling vehicles now for over 10 years, don't really consider myself a dirtbag. When ever I sell a vehicle it is my job to make the dealership a profit, they don't ask me to make alot but I do have to make a profit, usually just $300 over invoice.Let me ask all of you this, what ever your job is,are you ripping people off by making a profit,I don't know of any company that will come to my house and perform any service without making a profit.
If the dealership bid the trade unseen and you did not tell them about the scratches well guess what it deducts from the value of the vehicle.I have people all of the time tells me on the phone that their vehicle is perfect and I give them a bid but once it gets here it is anything but perfect and then we deduct for the damage.
