Can any of you recall a worse season for tornadoes?

On the course!
I have never seen more tornadoes, or more deaths from them than this year.

The devastation is just phenomenal, too.

These storm chase people are totally nuts, too!

it has been an unbelievable year starting with record snowfalls everywhere... even my home in AL had their 1st white Christmas ever and then had another 10 inch snowstorm... then the tsunami ... then the floods and tornadoes

what is so amazing about the tornadoes is with all the equipment where they can actually track them now, Doppler radar, sirens, people filming live and putting on phones, Facebook, Twitter, etc, and have as many deaths!!! BUT this is the 1st time EVER that these MAJOR tornadoes have hit so many heavily populated areas and there is the big difference ... the biggest tornado that hit during the AL tragedy was actually in northern AL...it was the only one that was F5, it had the most deaths even in small towns and very lucky did not hit Huntsville/Decatur or that toll would have been MUCH higher... the whole county was without power for 5 days

and they KNEW it was coming ... you should do some googling for some of the videos and pics as it will blow your mind... and like Woody says until you see it firsthand, pics and video do not do justice, it will blow your mind, take your breath and will wonder how so many more people did not lose their life!

and I continue to give props every day Woody to your alma mater and the Toomers for Tuscaloosa group which has done an unbelievable job :0074

Tornadoes were always little fingers storms that would come down......go back up.....come down....and so on.

These monsters are a mile wide, and stay on the ground for MILES!

I know there have been storms like this plenty of times in our history, but not on top of each other in the same season, and not hitting cities, like Dunc mentioned.

Maybe 2012 will be our demise????

Yyz, GW. I think you could be on to something.

Question, does Israel get invaded before or after the rapture?

I think it's after but the middle east plays a very important role. I read the left behind series and while fiction, it was based on the whole premise of the Return.

Who knows. lumi look more like a genius everyday.

It won't be long until we start a contact list the way things are spiraling..

Scientists predicted that there would be a severe unpredictable weather pattern, didn't realize it would be like this. Hate Northern WI weather but I am appreciating it everyday now.

Now for the deaths, what do people do down south when there is a tornado watch or warning? It is my understanding that people do not have basements to hide in. If you have a mile wide tornado without a basement, are you not playing Russian Roulette?

One touched down 8 miles from here 2 nights ago. Just a brief funnel was spotted. Our sirens have been going off damn near daily. Nothing ever happens so the siren is more annoying than anything else. We don't go running to the basement. I have been, however, been taking a peek outside more often lately.

Last night as soon as the sirens went off half my neighborhood was out front looking around to see what was coming. From watching the news and seeing the radar you can pretty much tell exactly where there are chances of having one. My friend in Grapevine(middle of DFW) sat outside of his house and watch a small one form and then go back up.

But yeah, if a big one came then there's not much we can do besides hope for the best. I had a bed in the bathroom and bicycle helmets for both of my kids to put on.

I guess I am dumb, but why don't they have basements? Is it a pest issue? Flood issue?

A business might do well if it could make bunkers that go into the ground with a maximum height of ground level for people to jump into. The cost would probably be astronomical not to mention a ventilation/pest problem but if I were down south, I would be digging a trench right now to jump in.

Not dumb, I really don't have a clue. Why should be have a basement? I've never had one and don't really know why you would have one.

Well for starters it's a good place to hide from a tornado. Now just when I was growing up the basement was where the washer and dryer was, plus the wood furnace and stacked wood was down there (wouldn't need that in Texas), people also stored things down there or had canned goods down there as well, the old Finlanders up here would have saunas in their basements, my dad was a Finlander and going to Grammas house when it was 30 below was a luxury just to get in the sowwwnah.

Only draw backs was a musty smell, chance of flooding every 5 years or so, and good place for mice.

More and more people up where I live are going away from building basements, really no need to have one but if I lived in tornado alley I would damn sure want one. I would be bunkered down.

Its a ground stability issue. We here in the Upper Midwest have thick topsoil with a good amount of clay in it which drains well.
You get down south and the ground is sandy and not as dense as it is here so drainage and stability would be issues with a basement.
Frost depth is a part of it, too. Where I'm at i had to sink the footings for the deck I built last year 42 inches to get below the frost line so the footings don't heave with the freezing/thawing cycles.
