Well for starters it's a good place to hide from a tornado. Now just when I was growing up the basement was where the washer and dryer was, plus the wood furnace and stacked wood was down there (wouldn't need that in Texas), people also stored things down there or had canned goods down there as well, the old Finlanders up here would have saunas in their basements, my dad was a Finlander and going to Grammas house when it was 30 below was a luxury just to get in the sowwwnah.
Only draw backs was a musty smell, chance of flooding every 5 years or so, and good place for mice.
I've lived her for all my life(39 years) and I've never seen a tornado so even thought it "could" happen I'm not spending the money for it. I have a better chance of being hurt in a car or riding my bike. My washer and dryer is in the wash room by itself. I have a big window in the room so it's always fresh and has a lot of sunlight. I don't think I would be big on any where that could be dark, musty, smell and for sure a place that was good for mice.
Saying all of that, I wouldn't mind having one if it was really nice.
