please tell me youre joking -- ohio state didnt win their 2002 championship with a dominant defense? and no, they didnt win in a freakin shootout, lol. they held one of the most powerful offenses in the national to 17 points in 4 quarters.

usc is not a typical pac 10 team. they play east coast football. theyre an anomaly out west. they can beat you multiple ways.

USC plays bend but don't break D. That is not SEC style D and not sure about East Coast.

but are you seriously still trying to argue the pac10 has good defense? i dont have a lot more time this afternoon, but why are you doing this to yourself.

I never said Pac 10 plays great defense. Never implied the Pac 10 is the best defensive conf. in football. My argument is Pac 10 D's are not as bad as people think. Same with ND's D.

yes, the pac10 offenses are good. so naturally the defensive numbers are not going to be as sharp.

but defensive football 101 is about stopping the run and being physical. that is the same in the pac10, sec, and the world league overseas.

USC philiosophy is #1 stop run, #2 don't get beat deep/give up big plays. #3 force turnovers. Every wed. USC has turnover day on D where they work on technique etc. Worked wonders @ND where Bing forced fumble!

arizona just rushed for 315, i repeat 315, yards against ucla last week, a team that is considered the 2nd best in the pac10.

UCLA rush D is very bad. I agree. But Arizona QB is awesome and he can burn you witht he pass. Which helps in having a great rushing attack. In general, you can't stack the line in Pac 10 play because the QB's are awesome. In other conf. the QB or offensive systems can't burn you with the pass so you can stack the line without much fear of the pass.

You can't cover up a weakness on D in the Pac 10 because the offenses are balanced.

usc is a juggernaut, plain and simple. theyre unlike any team out west. but that doesnt mean the pac10 is a good defensive conference. again, usc would score points in any conference. but enough with the pac10 nonsense.

The last 3 years USC has had great defense. In Pac 10 play offenses were able to score and put up stats on USC. In OOC play and in BCS BOWL GAMES, other conf. high powered offenses were shut down. Why?

USC would have the #1 D in the country last 3 years if they played in the Big 12, Big 10, SEC etc. USC D never has trouble shutting down OOC or BCS Bowl offenses but Pac 10 offense always give USC D trouble. Players have commented on it repeatedly. Iowa, Michigan, and OU were considered to have top 5 offenses in the country and all 3 offenses were clicking on all cylanders before playing USC. All 3 were considered the hottest teams in the country at the end of the season. All 3 had were held below their averages.

My argument is Pac 10 offenses can move the ball and score on USC week in week out. Even if USC is "unlike any west coast team" which I agree, but they have same trouble stopping offenses the other teams do in conf. play. So maybe the other Pac 10 D's are not so bad as the stats show.

That might be the dumbest thing I have ever read. I won't even respond. I think every ND fan here as stated we don't deserve to be in the NC. Like I said - This is the dumbest thread I've ever responded too...

They're not quiet when they're losing, I take it back, they are non-existent and to say ND fans are the most loyal, tells me you've never been out of Indiana. Take a trip down South and check out those fans, you might learn something about loyal fans...

I have never been out of Indiana - LOL. Whatever dude - Every team has their fair weather fans. Here we go with the overhyped South... Didn't see that many Vol fans up here in Indiana like in the past. In fact - They were no where to be seen. LOL

I cannot believe this argument is still going on.LOOK. ND will not play in the BCS championship,but don't go bashing them about loyal fans and quiet fans when they lose. We take losing pretty serious,(i.e bob,ty,).Charlie Weiss is a very intelligent o/c,otherwise ND's offense would not be averaging 38 points a game.We REAP the wins and SWALLOW the losses just like every other team.Yes we are gonna ride this season out just like every other team and fan out there does.Its been a long time coming..I do believe giving Charlie that 10 year deal WAS worth it.He has the spirits up of every player on the team and the fans believing they can win again.He didn't win Super Bowls in the NFL on pure dumb luck. He must know something of what he is doing.as far as the offense,defense is concerned,they both match up pretty close to the #1 team in the nation,as anybody can see if they watched them two play.SO, old question,Does defense win games or offense?To me, you could have the best defense in the country,but if you ain't got no offense,there's gonna be a hell of alot of o/t's and ties..By the way,What was the time of possession between ND/USC? Now there's a o/c who new what to do........
