Jack,
a couple of states are looking into the cell ph company practices on extending there contracts for ph upgrades/plan upgrades or downgrades etc.
The cell ph companies ARE NOT HAPPY about their industry facing regulation Thats another industry that has the public by the nuts.
If I go over on minutes its 45 cents a minute-thats a racket-big time
Ever look at what you pay on taxes on your cell bill. Its like 20% of the bill total or more in some cases. Congress loves those guys!

Shamrock ,
First off- Blessings to your dad and your family.
Your cheapest(as little as 40 or 50 bucks) and possibly quickest way to a "newer " ph is to buy one on craigs list(or ebay as someone else suggested).then you just call verizon and they will switch it over to the newer ph(Must be a verizon cell phone however)
they will try to charge you a service charge for the switch , but I would guess if you explain the situation about your dad and since he's a fomer employee they can waive that charge.
If you find one Craigs list you can probably meet the guy selling within 24 hours(ive sold two old phs that way-FYI)

thank you for the help guys, always great people here at jacks place looking out. Thanks again

ROC & BSU, you both mention getting phones from ebay or Craigs list, wouldn't I be better off getting one of the free upgrade phones from verizon? I checked online, there is 3 or 4 free upgrade phones, then literally dozens more for more money. Neither of my parents need all those options etc.. Aren't these free upgrade decent enough.

Probably seems ridiculous I don't know this stuff, but because of my own physical situation, have never had use for a cell phone myself.

Thanks again

If you take any NEW phone from verizon on a "free' upgrade you must extend your ph contract for two years (usually the case). just making you aware of that.
You need a ph that is senior friendly as well so it might be best to get one that has loudspeaker option on it(most newer phones have this-Good for a senior who may be a bit hard of hearing) -Good Luck, and stay out of the snow
