that when a team punts on 4th down they ARE NOT "turning the ball over on downs"?

yes, there are a lot of other terrible nfl announcers (phil simms comes to mind)...but this focking guy hasn't even mastered the jargon!

So. Cal
but if they get the punt off before the shot clock expires is it a turnover on downs or an intentional walk?

he also referenced the 2nd quarter as the 2nd period.

this guy comes out of nowhere onto the nfl play-by-play scene and he is sooooooooo bad.

to top it off he calls 2 games a week. no one else calls 2 games a week and this guy gets 2 primetime games.

hire someone else for one of the games at least...please:nono:

i actually dont mind him. sure he makes mistakes but he doesn't sit there and talk every chance he gets like Phil Simms. Phil simms never lets a game breath. On and on and on. He must be a nightmare to hang out with. One time i muted him and the guy who types inside my TV to show what he is saying popped out of my TV and said he had enough

this is where he started his career.

Prior to his NBC News assignment, Gumbel worked for NBC Sports (fall 1975 - winter 1982), serving as the host of virtually all its primary programs and championship event broadcasts, including Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the NCAA basketball tournament.

i never liked the guy either but he didn't come out of nowhere.

just to add a little...

He attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine where he played football and baseball and was a member of the class of 1970. He was a history major and wrote sports columns for the school newspaper, The Bates Student.

Gumbel began his television career in October 1972, when he was named a sportscaster for KNBC-TV out of Los Angeles

He first worked for NBC Sports in the fall of 1975 as co-host of its National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck.

One of Bryant Gumbel's more memorable moments during his stint at NBC Sports occurred in 1982, when he was on site for the now legendary "Epic in Miami" NFL playoff game between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins. When the game was said and done, Gumbel told the viewing audience "If you didn't like this football game then you didn't like football!"

[here is the reason you get the goofs]
In April 2006, The NFL Network announced that Gumbel along with Cris Collinsworth would call its new package of NFL games. This is despite the fact that Gumbel unlike his brother Greg, has never called play-by-play for live sporting events before in his career.[3] Even before he called his first game for the network his status was brought into question after Gumbel stirred up controversy in his closing remarks on his HBO program on August 15 2006, in which he criticized NFL Player's Association head Gene Upshaw and outgoing NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Gumbel would later reconcile with the NFL and will retain his play-by-play job with the NFL Network.[4]

could simply be a case of a bad hire...happens in business everyday..time will tell.

Thanks MJ...

As for me, being 3 years old in 1982 when he stopped working for NBC, I have never heard him do any play-by-play. I know he has been hosting an HBO show for awhile (which I have never seen).

Was he doing play-by-play back then or just hosting shows?

When I mentioned him coming out of nowhere I was referring to him calling NFL play-by-play, which I have never heard him do before his stint on the NFL network.

Either way, he absolutely sucks. He kind of makes me feel like I am in the library watching the game because he talks so quietly and properly and he doesn't encourage any excitement out of his listeners.

Luckily I won't have to endure him on Saturday nite because the game sucks anyway and I'll be hanging out with the fam.
