Chipper out of lineup, is doubtful for weekend

By CARROLL ROGERS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/25/08

Philadelphia ? Chipper Jones was out of the lineup Friday and considers himself "doubtful" for the rest of the weekend series against the Phillies because of the left hamstring he strained Wednesday in Florida.

Jones said he wouldn't be available to pinch hit Friday and will have to wait and see about his availability for the next two games.

"If I'm hurting just sitting here, it's not day-to-day," Jones said. "It's not going to be miraculously better tomorrow.":SIB

Friday's game was the 13th :00hour that Jones has missed this season ? including two of the first nine games with the Phillies ? with injuries ranging from a quadriceps tear, groin strain and back spasms. But this would seem the most serious of them all.:0corn

"With a quad you can temper it to a certain extent, but a quad doesn't really bother me sitting around, walking, hitting, stuff like that," Jones said. "The hamstring pretty much affects whatever you do.":SIB

Jones, who is leading the majors with a .369 batting average, said going on the disabled list for the first time this season is at least a possibility. It's probably something the Braves won't act on until after the Phillies series is over if there's even a chance Jones can pinch hit Saturday or Sunday.

Jones pulled his right hamstring in 2004, which landed him on the disabled list. He said this one is not as bad, but the off-day Thursday didn't help him as much as it might have with his quad.

"It's more noticeable today," Jones said. "I've got a big old knot in my hamstring. We iced it a few times the other night after it happened, so it had calmed down. But when I can feel it just sitting and standing up and walking, it's not going to be any good doing anything else."
.............................................................

I think I said on post # 1,000 that Larry would go on the disabled list soon after the all star game.

Did you ever notice how Larry talks about his hamstring as if its a real person.

Its tight today but had a big old knot on it.

And his use of you is like Vick used to do.

You just have to take this day by day and see what happens. If I go on the DL list then so be it. You just go fishing for the hot month and then I can come back and dominate again wheb its cooler.

You just cant say when you are going to be
100 %. :scared

Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
Like the seashore clings to the sea
Like you'll never get rid of your hamstring
injury, and you'll never get rid of me

Let all the others fight and fuss
Whatever happens, we've got us.

Me and my hamstring
We're closer than pages that stick in a book
We're closer than ripples that play in a brook
Strolling down the avenue
Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look
Closer than a miser or the bloodhound's to Liza
Me and my hamstring
We're closer than smog when it clings to L.A.
We're closer than Bobby is to J.F.K.
Not a soul can bust this team in two
We stick together like glue

And when it's sleeping time
That's when we rise
We start to swing
Swing to the skies
Our clocks don't chime
What a surprise
They ring-a-ding-ding!
Disabled List !

Me and my hamstring

And now to repeat what I said at the start
They'll need a large crowbar to break us apart
We're alone but far from blue

Before we get finished, we'll make the town roar
We'll make all the late spots, and then a few more
We'll wind up at Jilly's right after Toot's Shore
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
(Here comes the party!)
For my hamstring and me!
.........................................................

now someone made a song about Larry's hamstring. :SIB

The Atlanta Braves will be minus Chipper Jones for a while.

The Braves put Chipper on the 15-day disabled list Monday, a setback for a team trying to stay in the NL East race.

Jones leads the majors in hitting at .369. He hurt his left hamstring Wednesday night running out a grounder and has been slow to heal.:SIB

The Braves blew a six-run lead on Saturday and lost 10-9, then followed up by squandering a five-run cushion Sunday in a 12-10 defeat.
........................................................

Lets see thats approximately 15 days x 4 =
60 at bats down the tubes.

Chipper has the Vick syndrome. I honestly believe that he takes time off with these types of injurys. He believes he can come off the DL and still pick up where he left off and continue to hit at a high average and maintain his worth to the team so they will sign him again for millions. This has been going on with Jones for 10 years.

If my preliminary calculations are correct, Larry is going to be on DL for 15 games.

That leaves 41 games he is eligible for until
Sept 28 the last game.

He has 317 at bats so far this year.

With 41 games and four at bats the rest of the way that is 164.

That makes Larry 20-30 bats short of what he needs to qualify for the batting title.

Not sure if I counted double headers.

Not sure I counted future hamstring pulls while running the bases :142smilie

Disabled Lists

There are two Disabled Lists, the 15-day and 60-day. The only real difference between them is that players on the 60-day DL -- sometimes called the Emergency DL -- don't count against a team's 40-man roster.

To be placed on either Disabled List, a player must be certified disabled by a doctor. That said, such certifications generally aren't particularly difficult to acquire. :142smilie

Like when Larry says - Doc its my owww my hammy my hammy, I can't move.

Players can be disabled retroactively, up to a maximum of 10 days, beginning with the day after the last day on which they played.

A player on the 15-day Disabled List may be shifted to the 60-day DL at any time.

According to the Rules, players on a Disabled List "may be assigned to a Minor League Club for the purpose of injury rehabilitation for a maximum of 20 days in the case of non-pitchers and 30 days in the case of pitchers

Larry goes on the disabled list in late July and early August to escape the Georgia heat.
Here he rehabs his hammy , quad, and groin injuries. You just arn't going to play if you are not 100% . You got to ease back into the lineup. I think I got some bleeding down there in my groin area. You just have to take time off

He dpesnt need 500 at bats to win the title. He just needs 502 plate appearances to qualify. Here is a copy of the rules
1957 to the present ? A player has needed 3.1 plate appearances per team game; thus, players were no longer penalized for walking so frequently or benefited for walking so rarely. (In 1954, for example, Ted Williams batted .345 but had only 386 ABs, while topping the AL with 136 walks. Williams thus lost the batting title to Cleveland?s Bobby Avila, who hit .341 in 555 ABs.) In the 154-game schedule, the required number of plate appearances was 477, and since the era of the 162-game schedule, the requisite number of PAs has been 502. (Adjustments to this 502 PA figure have been made during strike-shortened seasons, such as 1981 and 1994.)
Also note that from 1967 to the present, if the player with the highest average in a league fails to meet the minimum plate-appearance requirement, the remaining plate appearances until qualification (for example, 5 PA's, if the player finished the season with 497 plate appearances) are hypothetically considered hitless at-bats; if his recalculated batting average still tops the league, he is awarded the title. (This policy was invoked in 1981, securing Bill Madlock his third NL batting crown, and in 1996, when NL titlist Tony Gwynn finished the year with only 498 PAs.)

He wil not be considered with less than 400 plate appearances. He has yet to make that.

..............................................................

Larry has had 380 plate appearances in 2008

thats better than the 317 at bats.

Its still going to be very close for him to qualify.

First he has to lead at the end of the season.

Next he has to not pull any more hammys running to first base :142smilie :142smilie

I just don't see him getting the ABs because Cox will pull him late in any blowouts, win or lose, on top of the fact the he's going to rest some days as well. If he gets hurt again, they'll probably shut him down for the rest of the year.

not conceding, nice try

i just know he won't qualify, he's not going to get the ABs
...........................................................

Ok then .

Chipper is close to dropping into second place.

Then one groin injury and its probably over for him.

Still a month to go though. gl
