I have been invited to a CAO Criollo Cigar Launch Dinner @ a nice resturant (The Palm).

I have smoked a few cigars in my time. I am not a big fan of them but this will be a great evening to see and be seen. I know the basics and I have even purchased a half-dozen in martini bars to enjoy with company that enjoyed them on a regular basis. I have smoked (sorry for spelling) Romeo e Juliete? and Altoro Fuente Punch? Mostly lighter stuff....

Can any Madjackers that are Cigar smokers give me any advice about cigars or give me a few bits of conservation about them so I don't look like a complete dumbass.

Anything would help. Here is an excerpt of the invite:

CAO, The Palm, and Uptown's Smoke Shop
cordially invite you to the Nashville CAO Criollo Cigar Launch Dinner. ?In addition to an exquisite dinner, guests will receive three complimentary CAO Criollo Cigars
(recently rated "OUTSTANDING" by Cigar Insider, and one of the most sought-after cigars of 2003).

I will gladly ship one of the three "freebies" to the MJer that gives the best advice.

First of all, this is not only a great magazine, but a great website for all the information you should need:

http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/Home

I am no expert, I just enoy a good cigar every now and then. One thing I have learned is that people who really know cigars, REALLY KNOW cigars. So I try not to pretend like I know something I dont, else they ask me how the draw is on the cigar I have, or what I think of the natural leaf wrapper. The CA website has a ton of great articles and FAQ-type things you can read through, should at least give you a good start.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!

two biggest ways to spot a poser...

two biggest ways to spot a poser...

light cigar with wood matches, never a lighter.

Don't leave it in the mouth all the time, it's not a pacifier.

Listen to acihistr8 and go to the cigar aficianado web site and read the cigars 101 link. Otherwise here are the answers to the most popular conversation questions:

Cigars are stored at 70% humidity and 70 degrees

Colibri makes the best lighters (Never use a zippo)

Most "Cuban" cigars smoked in the US are fake

Most cigars bought here are made in the Dominican Republic

Yes JFK horded Cuban smokes before signing the Embargo

Hand rolled, NEVER machine rolled

It is OK to relight your cigar if it goes out

You prefer a guillitone cutter

Macanudo is probably the most popular "premium" cigar in the US, though not the best in many's opinion

I'll post more when I think of them

WTF is this thread about, huh? No freebies, bubba.

There was a radio show hosted last week at a restaurant called the Palms here in Coral Gables last week (Dave the General or somethin'). That ain't the same one, is it???

Got some "contraband Cubans" a while back (supposedely made in Havana by the REAL guys), and man, they were nasty. Stickin' to the Dom. Rep. ones. And forget any Cohibas, that brand has been plagiarized more than ROLEX and Louis Vitton combined ... in Hong Kong! ;)

I prefer R & J (Romeo & Juliet)

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Blazer,
I've been known to have puffed some good ones.....
I will only elaborate on what has not been touched on as of yet.

If you really want to impress the masses there, make sure when you light your stick, you do so rolling it between your thumb and index/middle finger, working to get a nice glow about 1/8" to 1/4" deep start. ALWAYS do this away from your mouth! The calibra lighters and the like are good for this as they stay lite longer than matches, and dont give off a distinct flavor of burnt butane.

Since you mentioned that you are "not a big fan" of cigars it might be pertinent to talk of your choice of cut. The clip of the very end of the "gar" is very important to the overall smoke. Maybe the "V" cut would be good for you as this allows ample draw while still leaving a good portion of the "cap" for filtering purposes. Some like the simple "bullet" cut which does accomplish much the same thing, however I have found the end doesn't allow for an easy draw. The typical guillitone cutter does not allow for any error, and many times inexperienced smokers will chop the cap right off, although the hard core smokers many times prefer this. I liken it to smoking camel no filter cigarettes!
Dont think your after that..  LOL

Then the question of how far to take that dog down. Some say the smoke only goes to the "ring" or label. Others say take the ring off. I have seen both, dont think you must smoke your cigar all this way, no one will fault you for quitting early. Typically most will end their smoke somewhere between 1/2 way and the label. Of course this depends a great deal on the quality of the cigar in question, the atmosphere, and the smokers state of mind.

There is so much more to this, but like good wine, it does take some partaking to get it down. Hope this helps, sounds like a great time!! Enjoy. :D
