PHOENIX (AP) -- Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett escaped the mean streets of his youth, but the memories are never far off.

Just four days before the national championship game, the 19-year-old freshman criticized school officials for failing to help him fly home to attend the funeral of a lifelong friend.

``I guess football's more important than a person's life to them,'' Clarett said Monday. ``That's why I'm ready to get this game over and go back home.''

Clarett said he learned of his friend's death more than a week ago, and asked Ohio State officials the next day if he could miss practice to return home to Youngstown, Ohio, and attend Monday's funeral. He said school officials gave him ``the runaround.''

``I'm kind of messed up now, because they jerked me'' around, Clarett said. ``I really wanted to go back. I'm not really supposed to be here. But it's cool. Things happen in life, there's bumps in the road like everything else. But I'll be all right.''

OSU athletic director Andy Geiger said the school could not help Clarett with funds to fly home because the paperwork required for NCAA compliance was not on file. He said other athletes have flown home using school funds and that OSU offered to reimburse Clarett once the proper forms were filled out.

``He elected not to do that, or couldn't afford that, or there wasn't anybody in his family who could do it. We were stuck in a place where the rule is we couldn't go forward and buy a ticket. That was upsetting to him,'' Geiger said. ``But there isn't any effort on our part to bar him from going anyplace.''

Clarett declined to identify his friend, who he said was shot last week. But Clarett's mother, Michelle, confirmed the friend was Juaquin A. ``Juan'' Bell, 23, of Youngstown.

``It's a friendship they had growing up,'' she said. ``Young people need to say goodbye. It's unfortunate, but you have to go by the rules.''

Youngstown police said Bell was shot multiple times Dec. 21. They said drugs, money and bullet casings were found at the scene. No one has been arrested.

Clarett has talked often about the hardships of growing up in Youngstown and seeing relatives, friends and neighbors killed in senseless shootings. He recalled one more time Monday how lucky he was to get a scholarship and the opportunity to put those memories behind him.

But Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, who has forged a close relationship with Clarett, knew the youngster felt the sting of losing one more person who was close to him.

``I know he's really distraught over losing a very, very close friend. That's even harder when you're not around when you lose someone that's very close to you. It's very difficult on you. I know he'd like to be there,'' Tressel said.

But Tressel also said that school officials never denied Clarett the opportunity to return to Youngstown.

``I suppose that anyone's take on a situation is their own. But, no, I wouldn't call it that,'' Tressel said. ``The best thing for all involved is to say it didn't work out.''

Still, the coach didn't deny his star was hurting.

``I'm real concerned because I know how close he was to the young man. I'm more worried about that than issues outside that are being talked about,'' Tressel said.

Clarett set Ohio State freshman records this season with 1,190 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes will play No. 1 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Friday, but he said it would be difficult to keep a football game in perspective in light of what is going on back home.

Clarett was a toddler when his father left home. His mother, the chief deputy clerk for the municipal court in Youngstown, raised Clarett, two brothers and 11 cousins in a three-bedroom home. Sometimes, he still feels the sting of that tough upbringing.

``You go through downtown Columbus, you've got people sleeping on sidewalks. ... This is wintertime, it's like 19 degrees down there. They're sleeping in boxes and little covers,'' he said. ``It don't make any sense to me.''

Maurice and Albert Belle

Many are reminded that the two of them share the same disposition. However, as is the case everywhere, as long as they produce they are tolerated. Clarett has had several episodes of immature behavior this year, but yet he is forgiven. Andy geiger and Jim Tressell are absolute straight arrows, and if they say that ncaa rules prevented the flight to be paid for in advance then it is so. Maurice is just practicing to be a high priced nfl player who like so many are jerkoffs.

could be, bucks fan, but I think this is partly to blame on all the stupid, no room for common sense NCAA rules.

Dedicate the game to your friend and run for 200 yds+ would be the mature thing to do; we all have bumps in life...

It will be interesting to see how Clarett plays. Hopefully, once he's in the game, the chip he has on his shoulder for OSU will be taken out on the Canes. Why this is so big is without a focussed, semi-healthy Clarett, OSU has no chance.

SixFive is right though, another example of how the NCAA doesn't account for things that happen in a student-athletes-young person's life. Only what happens in the athlete's life...:(

i`d love to know

what this "student" athlete`s major and grade point average are.....does the school pay for the average student to fly somewhere for a funeral?......and the inevitable"look how much money the athlete`s make for a school"?......well,guess how much a "real" college education costs?.....that`s stipend enough....

Then why didnt they just come out of pocket and get the guy to the funeral ? Don't sound like that big a deal and he would have probably played and practiced better.

Something tells me that he may go in the tank. The chip on his shoulder may turn to a brick. He might do his Albert Belle impression and show the sidelines his ass.:moon:

Miami is looking good with all this. A dog cannot hunt laying 14 points however.

Another typical example of an athlete expecting the world to come to him. If he filled out the proper paperwork, it could have happened. He didn't for whatever reason. Now the school is to blame. Why couldn't he take the responsibility? No school with the stature of Ohio State is going to risk breaking the NCAA rules whether the rules are sensible or not. I have also read where he feels the school is at fault for not giving back to the community. Let's see how much he is willing to give back to the community once he signs his NFL deal.

He showed earlier in the season how immature he is (even for a college freshman) when he bitched and moaned during the Northwestern game. A game in which he almost single-handedly lost for Ohio State.

Clarett needs to keep his mouth shut. Apparently he didn't think it was worth 5 minutes of life to fill-out a form that all freshman athletes are given the option of...one that will enable the school to reimburse the student or family in situations like this. OSU's hands were tied, it's Clarett's own stupidity that is the problem here.

stupid or not as much as i hate the ncaa and their dumb ass rules.

this one is the players fault.

Each player from every sport has to fill out a emergency travel papers each year at the start of each year. or semester that they come in under. It is up to the player themself to go to the school compliance office of each school they attend and ask for the travel fourm and fill it out in front of a wittness which has to be a compliance officer. the papers are then sent in to ncaa office and a copy is stamped and sent back to school takes about 5-7 days to get them back after they get to the office. Then they are put into the complince file of each player male or female of all sports.

This time the blame is only to be on one person but the player himself. hate to say it because i hate the ncaa for the most part but this time they are in the right.

This is one rule where you can't break or you would have people being flowen all over the world the are 1000's of people in the us that play a ncaa sport so you cannot expect them to break this rule or give in and say send the paper work later it would happen all the time and to many people to have to deal with. thats why each school sends them all in at 1 time 2 times a year.

If I am not mistaken they will only pay for them to fly if they are out of town at a scheduled road game, no other reason.

you are correct pf. it's not like you can be flowen at anytime it has to be while on the road at a school function. Also i am not quite sure if a friend even falls under the emergency travel plan of the ncaa.

Boo hoo hooo.........I am wet with the tears all the way over here. It doesn't help his situation any , being that the friend was obviously participating in some type of a drug deal.

If your best friend had been shot would you not want to go back. Screw the paperwork.

The school did not want the distraction. The coach could have come out of his pocket and paid for it on his American Express card. Who would fault that ? He wasnt allowed to go because of a technicality. They wanted him there practicing and winning the game. THE GAME IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ! Death in the family or your close circle of friends. Just forget about it we got a gd football game to play here son.

If he is really pissed about this it will show on the field.

Clarett should have known the proper channels to go through to get it done. The press has blown the whole thing out of proportion making ohio state look like they are the villian, which they are not. Best case scenario for the cry baby clarett is that he turns pro next year and ends up in cincinatti. let him get a taste of the real world!!!
