WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney, the Republican U.S. presidential nominee in 2012, told a meeting of donors on Friday that he is considering another White House run in 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Donors present at a meeting in New York told the Journal the former Massachusetts governor did not give a timetable for making a decision about whether to launch what would be his third presidential campaign.

Romney failed to win the nomination in 2008. He lost the general election to President Barack Obama in 2012.

Pope Francis is insisting that his concern for the poor and critique of the global economic system isn't some novel, communist-inspired ideology but rather the original and core "touchstone" of the Christian faith.

Some U.S. conservatives have branded the first Latin American pope a Marxist for his frequent critiques of consumerism and focus on a church "that is poor and for the poor." But in an interview contained in a new book, Francis explains that his message is rooted in the Gospel and has been echoed by church fathers since Christianity's first centuries.

"The Gospel does not condemn the wealthy, but the idolatry of wealth, the idolatry that makes people indifferent to the call of the poor," Francis says in "This Economy Kills," a study of the pope's economic and social teachings, excerpts of which were provided Sunday to The Associated Press.

Specifically, Francis summarized a verse from the Gospel of Matthew which is the essential mission statement of his papacy: "I was hungry, I was thirsty, I was in prison, I was sick, I was naked and you helped me, clothed me, visited me, took care of me."

"Caring for our neighbor, for those who are poor, who suffer in body and soul, for those who are in need: this is the touchstone. Is it pauperism? No. It is the Gospel."

He cites church fathers dating to St. Ambrose and St. John Chrysostom as expressing the same concerns, and noted somewhat wryly that if he had said the same "some would accuse me of giving a Marxist homily."

"As we can see, this concern for the poor is in the Gospel, it is within the tradition of the church, it is not an invention of communism and it must not be turned into some ideology, as has sometimes happened before in the course of history," an apparent reference to the Latin American-inspired liberation theology.

With the shake of an Etch-A-Sketch, Mitt Romney reintroduced himself to the Republican Party on Friday as a man interested in running for president because of his desire to address poverty and income inequality. One only wonders why the former governor of Massachusetts neglected to focus on the growing problems the last time he held the title of GOP standard bearer.

Addressing a gathering of Republican National Committee officials below deck of the decommissioned U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, California, Romney ticked off three priorities crucial to what he called the "post-Obama era": making the world safer with a more muscular foreign policy, providing opportunity to all Americans, and lifting people out of poverty.

"It's a tragedy, a human tragedy, that the middle class in this country by and large doesn't believe that the future will be better than the past," he said. "We haven't seen rising incomes over decades.":facepalm:


"The rich have gotten richer, income inequality has gotten worse and there are more people in poverty than ever before under this president," he added.:SIB

Romney stressed his years as an LDS pastor, a topic he and his campaign rarely broached in 2012, and described working "with people who are very poor to help them get help."


"I'm in this race because I care about Americans. I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it," he said inelegantly following his victory in the Florida primary. "I'm not concerned about the very rich, they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of the America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling."

"I like being able to fire people who provide services to me," he said before the New Hampshire primary.

"Corporations are people, my friend ... of course they are. Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to the people," he said before the Iowa Ames straw poll.

And his infamous remarks about "47 percent" of Americans: "My job is not to worry about those people -- I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

But it's not just the gaffes. Romney embraced the Paul Ryan budget in 2012 -- a sweeping plan that, if enacted, would have instituted draconian cuts to programs affecting the poor. Millions of low-income Americans benefiting from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, as well as other retirement funding, would have been affected under a Romney presidency. Added to his promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act and its subsidies for the poor, it's not hard to see how Romney wouldn't be vexed by some of the same problems should he ultimately decide to run for president.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she owes America a "global apology" for the 2008 GOP presidential ticket's loss to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

During an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, Palin spoke about Obama's long-term strategy for defeating the Islamic State -- a militant group formerly known as ISIS or ISIL -- that he laid out in a speech Wednesday night.

"As I watched the speech last night, Sean, the thought going through my mind is, 'I owe America a global apology. Because John McCain, through all of this, John McCain should be our president,'" Palin said.


Palin went on to compare the Islamic State to Hitler and questioned how seriously Obama is taking the group.

"So when Barack Obama, like the rest of us, hear these bad guys, these terrorists, promising that they will raise the flag of Allah over our White House, for the life of me I don't know why he does not take this serious, the threat. Because yes, it's more than a vision," Palin said. "They're telling -- just like Hitler did all those years ago, when a war could've been avoided, because Hitler, too, did not hide his intentions. Shortly after declaring that she's "seriously interested" in running for president in 2016, Sarah Palin delivered a confusing speech that was panned by many, even some on the right.

Speaking at the Iowa Freedom Summit in Des Moines on Saturday, the former Alaska governor and one-time vice presidential candidate delivered a speech that John Fund of the National Review described as "meandering and often bizarre."

Here's an excerpt:

"Things must change for our government. Look at it. It isn?t too big to fail. It?s too big to succeed! It's too big to succeed, so we can afford no retreads or nothing will change with the same people and same policies that got us into the status quo. Another Latin word, status quo, and it stands for, ?Man, the middle-class everyday Americans are really gettin? taken for a ride.? That's status quo, and GOP leaders, by the way, y'know the man can only ride ya when your back is bent. So strengthen it. Then the man can't ride ya, America won't be taken for a ride, because so much is at stake and we can't afford politicians playing games like nothing more is at stake than, oh, maybe just the next standing of theirs in the next election."

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said on Sunday that even though he opposes gay marriage for religious reasons, he has plenty of gay friends -- just like he has friends who drink, curse and enjoy ballet.

"People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessary my lifestyle," Huckabee said on CNN's "State of the Union." "I don't drink alcohol, but gosh, a lot of my friends, maybe most of them do. I don't use profanity, but believe me, I've got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like classical music and ballet, opera -- it's not my cup of tea."

Huckabee, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, reiterated Sunday that he would like to run for the Republican nomination, joking that his ideal scenario would be for all other GOP candidates to drop out of the primary and let him win. He said his opposition to gay marriage is no more conservative than President Barack Obama's was when he won his first presidential term.

"Obama had the same position I had when he spoke about it in 2008, and for the same reason," Huckabee said. "He said it was because he was a Christian and because God is in the mix."

Obama's views on the subject have since evolved, and he said in 2012 that he supports same-sex marriage.

Republicans, particularly younger ones, have also been warming to the idea of gay marriage. But Huckabee said his views won't change "unless I get a new version of the Scriptures."

President Barack Obama was displeased with Mitt Romney's 2012 Election Night concession call, and briefly considered appointing Hillary Clinton to the Supreme Court, one of his closest former advisers reveals in a new book.

The adviser, David Axelrod, says Obama thought Romney suggested the president was only re-elected because he got out the black vote, according to an advance copy of Believer: My 40 Years in Politics obtained by the New York Daily News.

Obama was "unsmiling during the call, and slightly irritated when it was over," Axelrod writes in the book, scheduled to go on sale next week. Romney also reportedly told Obama that he had done a good job getting out the vote in Cleveland and Milwaukee, which Obama interpreted to mean black people.


"That's what he thinks this was all about," Obama said, according to Axelrod.

The 2014 Netflix documentary "Mitt" captures the moments before the call on Romney's end and shows the former Massachusetts governor asking aides if someone has the president's phone number.

Even though Obama beat him handily, Romney apparently told Obama that he was surprised he had lost the election. Romney recently flirted with a third run for the White House, but announced last week he wouldn't join the race.

Before Romney bowed out, Obama publicly mocked him for being "suddenly deeply concerned about poverty."

"That's great. Lets do something about it," Obama said.

Axelrod also reveals in the book that Obama briefly considered appointing Hillary Clinton to the Supreme Court after he won the Democratic nomination in 2008. Clinton, who Obama eventually appointed secretary of state, is considered the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016.

Obama is right. Bibi claimed his alternative wasn't war, yet didn't give any kind of specifics that would lead to anything but war, and war is not a solution. It was nothing but chicken little speak. Iran is playing hardball, and this is a very good opportunity for the US and P5 + 1, to gain the upper hand in negotiations. The price has just gone up, Iran. You do not reject good deals. You grab them when you can get them. Iran needs the deal. It is true, that Israel has not offered a viable deal, but, then, it is not party to the negotiations. Mr. Obama wants to verify that Iran has no nukes, and had set a term for a freeze. Iran said no to that deal, and that means, back to square one: an opportunity for the US to make a much better deal, take it or leave it. So it is no longer no bad deal, better no deal. Option still open. A better deal (for the US and the world) or no deal.
