Friday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) Rams 38, Vikings 31? Scouting in football is very important:

? Rams WR Cooper Kupp went to college at Eastern Washington.
? Vikings WR Adam Theilen went to college at Mankato State.

Two damn good players; teams with really good scouts found them.

12) Oklahoma Sooners had the ball for only 15:19 vs Army last week, Sooners? lowest TOP in any game since at least 1995.

11) Cleveland Indians will end the regular season with a winning record against their division, but a losing record against everyone else; they?re first playoff team to do that since the 2009 Minnesota Twins, who got swept in the ALDS.

10) Last week, Seattle RB Chris Carson carried the ball 32 times, most by any Seahawk since Week 12 of 2006, when Shaun Alexander carried it 40 times.

9) Since Bill Lazor became the Bengals? OC, only Tom Brady, Russell Wilson have thrown more TD passes than Cincy QB Andy Dalton.

8) Elsewhere?..Denver Broncos? TE Jake Butt tore his ACL and is expected to miss the remainder of the season; he got hurt going thru what basically was a walk-thru. Freak injury

7) Actor John Hurt has died in 45 different movies, making him the unofficial leader in on-screen deaths.

6) This from Darren Rovell of ESPN:

20 years ago, when Mark McGwire hit his 70th home run of the year for the Cardinals, Phil Ozersky, a fan making $30,000 a year, caught the baseball. Cardinals asked him for the ball in exchange for a signed bat, ball and jersey. Ozersky said he also wants to meet McGwire. McGwire declined.

Three months later, Ozersky sold ball for $3.05M. Thats million, with an M.

5) Former NBA star Amare Stoudemire is still playing basketball, for a pro team in Israel that is also the co-owner of.

4) Rockies 5, Phillies 3? Philly went 0-8 on their road trip, their worst road trip since 1883. Thats 18-83, not 19-83.

On August 5, Phillies were 63-48 and stop the NL East after beating the Marlins; they?re 15-33 since then.

3) Thursday afternoon, in the midst of an 12-1 blowout of Tampa Bay, CC Sabathia drilled Jesus Sucre of the Rays, in retaliation for an inside pitch a Tampa pitcher had thrown earlier. Sabathia was ejected from the game, leaving him two innings short of a $500,000 innings bonus.

Will they give him the $500K for being a good teammate?

2) Miami 47, North Carolina 10? Maybe the UNC players shouldn?t sell the sneakers/gear they get for free, then they wouldn?t get suspended, then their team wouldn?t get whacked just about every week. Miami came in struggling, but had a big night here.

1) Weird stat: in the 57-year history of the Mets, Jacob deGrom may become the first Mets pitcher ever to finish the season with a 10-9 record.

Friday's Tip Sheet
Brian Edwards

**Memphis at Tulane**

-- As of Wednesday afternoon, most betting shops had Memphis (3-1 straight up, 2-2 against the spread) installed as a 14-point favorite with a total of 67. The Green Wave was +420 on the money line (risk $100 to win $420).

-- Mike Norvell?s squad has beaten up on three non-conference foes at the Liberty Bowl, thumping Mercer (66-14), Georgia State (59-22) and South Alabama (52-35). The Tigers are 0-1 in AAC play, however, dropping their league opener 22-21 at Navy in Week 2.

-- Memphis didn?t have it quite as easy against the Jaguars last week, however. After taking a 21-7 lead on Brady White?s 25-yard touchdown pass to John Williams early in the second quarter, USA responded with a pair of TDs to tie the game at halftime. Norvell?s bunch pulled away in the fourth quarter behind star junior RB Darrell Henderson, a first-team All-AAC selection last year who may push for All-American honors this season. Henderson ran for 188 yards and two TDs on 22 attempts. White connected on 22-of-29 throws for 292 yards and two TDs without an interception. RB Patrick Taylor added 75 rushing yards and two scores on 17 carries, in addition to catching three balls for 22 yards. Henderson had two receptions for 34 yards, while Damonte Coxie had eight catches for 113 yards and one TD.

-- Henderson is the nation?s leader in rushing yards (709) by an 81-yard margin. He is in a second-place tie for rushing TDs (eight) and is also second in average yards per carry (12.2 YPC!). Henderson has produced those numbers despite averaging merely 14.5 attempts per game.

-- White, the grand transfer from Arizona State, has been outstanding for his new team. He has completed 72.2 percent of his passes for 1,064 yards with a stellar 12/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Coxie has been his favorite target, hauling in 23 receptions for 353 yards and four TDs. John Williams has 15 catches for 146 yards and one TD, while Henderson has six grabs for 124 yards and one TD.

-- The new fair-catch rule on kickoff returns and some shrewd coaching from opponents have really cut into Memphis star Tony Pollard?s ability to impact games through the first four. Pollard had 1,649 all-purpose yards and 10 TDs, including four TDs on KO returns, during the 2017 campaign. He?s been limited to 133 all-purpose yards and two TDs so far this year, only getting once chance to return a kick that went for negative two yards.

-- Memphis is ranked fourth in the country in total offense (593.0 yards per game), fifth in rushing yards (309.5 YPG), and 10th in scoring with its 49.5 points-per-game average. The defense is 24th in the nation in total ?D? (317.2 YPG) and 22nd at the defending the pass (166.2 YPG).

-- Tulane (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) has split a pair of home games while going 2-0 ATS. Willie Fritz is in his third season at the school. His 10-18 SU record doesn?t appear inspiring on the surface, but it says here that he?s the right man for the job and has this program on the right track. Tulane, which is 16-12 ATS on Fritz?s watch, has already lost a pair of one-possession games this season, and it lost three contests by six combined points in 2017.

-- Tulane opened the season by hooking up its backers like me in a 23-17 overtime loss to Wake Forest as a seven-point home underdog. Since then, the Green Wave has beaten Nicholls State 42-17 as a 17-point home favorite, before losing 31-24 at UAB and 49-6 at Ohio State.

-- Tulane owns a 4-2 spread record in six games as a home underdog during Fritz?s tenure. Meanwhile, Memphis has compiled a 4-3 ATS mark in seven spots as a road ?chalk? on Norvell?s watch.

-- Tulane senior QB Jonathan Banks has completed 49.5 percent of his passes for 792 yards with a 5/1 TD-INT ratio. Junior WR Darnell Mooney has 22 receptions for 385 yards and three TDs, while senior Terren Encalade has 15 catches for 310 yards and two TDs.

-- Junior RB Corey Dauphine, a transfer from Texas Tech, has run for 289 yards and three TDs on just 25 carries for a 11.6 YPC average. Darius Bradwell has 236 rushing yards, two rushing scores and a 5.6 YPC average.

-- Tulane?s top two TEs, Charles Jones and Kendall Ardoin, are both listed as ?questionable? with undisclosed injuries. Neither player was on the field at The ?Shoe last week.

-- Tulane?s defense is ranked No. 116 in the nation in total defense (495.5 YPG), No. 120 in pass defense (304.0 YPG), No. 99 versus the run (191.5 YPG) and No. 91 in scoring ?D? (30.0 PPG).

-- The ?over? is 3-1 overall for the Tigers, but the ?under? cashed in their lone previous road assignment. However, we?ll note that the 22-21 loss at Navy was played in a driving rainstorm for the entire game. Memphis?s home games have gone ?over? by 14.5, 18 and 21 points apiece (53.5 combined pts.).

-- The ?under? is 3-1 overall for Tulane, 1-1 in its home outings. The Green Wave has seen its games average combined scores of 52.2 PPG.

-- Memphis has won 11 games in a row in this rivalry, going 8-2 ATS in the past 10 encounters. Nine of those 10 victories have come by double-digit margins and eight have come by 14 points or more. The ?under? is 6-2 in the past eight meetings.

-- As of Wednesday afternoon, the forecast at weather.com was predicting partly cloudy skies for Friday night in the Big Easy. There?s only a 10 percent chance of rain, temperatures are anticipated to be in the mid-70s and winds aren?t expected to rise over four miles per hour. The field could be a little wet, though, as the forecast Friday afternoon calls for scattered thunderstorms and a 50 percent chance of rain.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**UCLA at Colorado**

-- My preseason prediction called for UCLA (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) to finish in the cellar of the Pac-12 South. It wasn?t a knock on new head coach Chip Kelly, but simply an assessment of the uphill challenge he faces in turning this program around. It hasn?t been pretty to date. Kelly?s debut was a nightmare, as the Bruins lost a 26-17 decision to Cincinnati as a 14-point home favorite. Next, they got run out of Norman in a 49-21 loss at Oklahoma. Then in Week 3, Fresno State came to the Rose Bowl and dealt out a 38-14 beatdown as a 2.5-point road ?chalk.?

-- Both teams are off open dates and have had plenty of time to prepare for each other. As of Wednesday afternoon, most books had Colorado (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) installed as a 9.5-point home favorite with a total of 60.5. The Bruins were +290 to win outright (risk $100 to win $290).

-- Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the prize of Kelly?s first recruiting class, has been thrown right into the fire and has taken his lumps early in his true freshman season. He has completed 54.7 percent of his passes for 522 yards with a 2/2 TD-INT ratio. Junior WR Theo Howard has emerged as his favorite target by making 11 receptions for 185 yards and one TD. Caleb Wilson has eight catches for 128 yards.

-- Another true freshman leads UCLA in rushing. Kazmeir Allen has a team-best 161 rushing yards and one TD on just 21 attempts for a 7.7 YPC average.

-- UCLA came into this year on a 14-24 ATS slump as a road underdog over the past decade. However, the Bruins did get the money in their lone such spot this year when they lost by 28 at OU as 31-point puppies.

-- Kelly had dynamic offenses during his four-year run at Oregon that produced an incredible 46-7 record. So far at UCLA? Not so much. The Bruins are ranked No. 119 in the nation in total offense (319.7 YPG), No. 102 in passing yards (189.0 YPG), No. 104 in rushing yards (130.7 YPG) and No. 121 in scoring with their abysmal 17.3 PPG average. UCLA?s defense hasn?t fared much better, ranking No. 116 in the country (37.7 PPG).

-- Colorado is undefeated going into its Pac-12 opener. Mike MacIntyre?s club opened the season by beating up on Colorado State by a 45-7 count as a seven-point favorite in Denver. Next, the Buffaloes went to Lincoln and captured a 33-28 win at Nebraska as three-point underdogs. In Week 3, they knocked off FCS foe New Hampshire 45-14 but failed to cover as 37.5-point home ?chalk.?

-- Junior QB Steven Montez has connected on 73.4 percent of his passes for 855 yards with an 8/2 TD-INT ratio. Sophomore TD Laviska Shenault has 26 receptions for 455 yards and three TDs, while K.D. Nixon has 17 catches for 181 yards and one TD.

-- RB Travon McMillian, a grad transfer from Va. Tech, has made his presence known early and often. McMillian has rushed for 290 yards and three TDs while averaging 8.8 YPC. Beau Bisharat has 144 rushing yards and a 7.2 YPC average.

-- Colorado owns an 11-6 spread record in 17 games as a home favorite under MacIntyre.

-- UCLA has been victorious in six of the past seven meetings in this rivalry, including a 27-23 victory last year. However, the Buffs covered the number as 7.5-point road underdogs.

-- When these teams met at this venue on a Thursday night two years ago, star QB Josh Rosen was out with an injury. Nevertheless, I backed the Bruins as a 13-point road underdog and they covered for me in a 20-10 loss. The game was tied at 10-10 early in the fourth quarter.

-- The ?over? is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in UCLA?s lone road contests. The Bruins have seen their games average combined scores of 55.0 PPG.

-- The ?under? is 2-1 overall for the Buffs, but the ?over? hit in their lone home outing.

-- According to weather.com on Wednesday, the forecast for Friday night in Boulder calls for clear skies, light winds and a low temperature of 45 degrees.

-- Fox Sports 1 will provide television coverage from Folsom Field at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Northwestern RB Jeremy Larkin has been forced to retire due to a recent diagnosis of cervical stenosis, which is not a life-threatening condition but prohibits him from continuing to play football. Larkin ran for 503 yards as a freshman in ?17 while serving as the back-up to Justin Jackson, who is the all-time leading rusher in school history. Larkin had five rushing TDs and a 6.0 YPC average last season. He also caught 11 balls for 115 receiving yards. Larkin was enjoying an outstanding year to date, rushing for 346 yards and five TDs with a 4.8 YPC average through only three contests. He also had 19 receptions for 127 yards. This is a crushing blow for the Wildcats, who have lost back-to-back home games vs. Duke (21-7) and vs. Akron (39-34) since winning 31-27 at Purdue in their opener. Pat Fitzgerald?s team if off an open date and has had two weeks to prepare for Saturday?s home date with Michigan.

-- San Diego State star RB Juwan Washington is expected to miss six weeks with a fractured clavicle. Washington had run for 513 yards and five TDs with a 5.2 YPC average through four games.

-- After true freshman QB Trevor Lawrence was named Clemson?s starting QB on Monday, Dabo Swinney gave the senior signal caller Kelly Bryant the day off to absorb the decision. Then on Tuesday morning, Bryant announced that he will transfer and play his senior season elsewhere in 2019. Bryant threw for 2,802 yards with a 13/8 TD-INT ratio in ?17, helping the Tigers advance to the College Football Playoff, where they lost to Alabama in the semifinals. Bryant had completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 456 yards with a 2/1 TD-INT ratio this year. He had rushed for 144 yards and two TDs. Meanwhile, Lawrence has a 9/2 TD-INT ratio. Bryant will have plenty of suitors and be immediately eligible next year.

College Essentials - Week 5
Tony Mejia

September is already disappearing into the rear-view. Although conference play is in full swing there are two matchups featuring the nation's top Independents that could impact the national race. College football is definitely a sprint so let?s play along and race right into the week?s top 10 offerings.

Saturday

Ohio State at Penn State, 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC: Urban Meyer and his staff have played to new QB Dwayne Haskins? strengths, empowering their strong-armed quarterback to look downfield. Expect them to attack a Nittany Lions defense that has had their issues defending the passing game this season despite not facing an attack anywhere near as formidble as what the Buckeyes bring into Happy Valley.

Even if James Franklin watches his defense get carved up, there's no reason the Nittany Lions can't win a shootout. They've seen Miles Sanders emerge as a capable replacement for Saquon Barkley and a number of receivers have stepped up for QB Trace McSorley. Without Ohio State's top pass rusher, Nick Bosa, out until November at the earliest, its defense now has to deal with its stiffest offensive challenge of the season and looked vulnerable against Oregon State and TCU. We should see plenty of points here, which is why the books have set the total up at 70 and rising.

Stanford at Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC: New QB Ian Book had a strong debut as the Fighting Irish crushed Wake Forest, executing so well that they got the Demon Deacons? defensive coordinator fired. Brian Kelly will continue to play veteran Brandon Wimbush some and might be forced to lean on his experience at some point again here, but it appears he feels his sophomore gives the team the best chance to overcome this hurdle, which is why he chose to get him in there as a starter last week. Suspended RB Dexter Williams has returned and should also be available for a few carries if Kelly wants to add him to the mix next to Tony Jones, Jr. and Jafar Armstrong.

Coming off a miraculous comeback win at Oregon, Stanford has gotten to this point unscathed without getting a truly big game out of top running back Bryce Love. He ran for 147 or more yards in last year?s first seven games but has surpassed the 100-yard mark only once this season, breaking off 136 on USC. Love topped the 180-yard mark four times last season and had a 301-yard game this time last year (Sept. 30) at Oregon State, so he?s due to start making the impact we?ve grown accustomed to seeing. Love didn?t find the end zone but contributed 125 rushing yards and made one heck of a decoy in helping then-unproven QB K.J. Costello the opportunity to throw four touchdown passes in a 38-20 win over Notre Dame in Palo Alto. The winner here enters October looking like a strong candidate for the national semifinals.

West Virginia at Texas Tech, 12 p.m. ET, ESPN2: Oklahoma looked vulnerable in nearly losing at home to Army last week, so both of these teams are undoubtedly fantasizing about a conference title. The Mountaineers haven?t been challenged since a strong defense has emerged to complement QB Will Grier's ability to put the ball wherever he wants. WR David Sills has 23 TD receptions in 15 games but he can't be keyed on due to the presence of Gary Jennings, who had nearly 100 catches last year and is the better pro prospect. Getting out of Lubbock with a win means West Virginia will be favored heavily to reach November unbeaten.

The Red Raiders not only have Patrick Mahomes making the program look good in the pros but are helping their own cause by recovering from a lopsided season-opening loss to Ole Miss. After knocking off Houston and pulling off an upset of Oklahoma State in Stillwater to open Big 12 play, Kliff Kingsbury's group is in good position to make this a special season since the schedule lends an assist with Oklahoma and Texas each coming into Lubbock in November's first two weekends. True freshman QB Alan Bowman has already broken some of Mahomes? single-game records and has an impressive receiving corps that has improved every week. Things could get real interesting in Lubbock if the Texas Tech defense can pick up where they left off against the Cowboys last week, having pitched a second-half shutout. Tech blew a 35-17 third-quarter lead in Morgantown last season and hasn't won in this annual series since '13.

Florida at Mississippi State, 6 p.m. ET, ESPN: Dan Mullen leaving for another SEC program went over as well as a runaway bride at a wedding would, so now that he's back, they'll have to check Bulldogs fans for torces and pitchforks in addition to the cowbells they carry into the Davis Wade Stadium. Coming off a frustrating loss at Kentucky, first-year coach Joe Moorhead's honeymoon period has officially ended, and if he wants to stop sleeping on the couch, he'll need to keep Mullen from a victorious return. Excuses simply won't be allowed.

The Gators have gotten improved play from QB Feleipe Franks this season and are hoping he can follow up a brilliant outing in Knoxville with another strong effort. With most suspensioins having been served and the majority of key players healthy, the Gators are enjoying a level of depth they haven't had the luxury of putting on display all season. Mississippi State called a players-only meeting after losing in Lexington, keying on handling the emotions of this week's meeting the right way in light of all the penalties that helped trip them up last week. Look for this to be a physical game. Hopefully the stripes will let the teams play and decide this on the field.

Syracuse at Clemson, 12 p.m. ET, ABC: Trevor Lawrence officially replaced Kelly Bryant at quarterback this week since the Tigers offense has been glaringly better with him at the controls. That?s something most predicted before the season opened since it appeared inevitable, but the change is news-worthy in that it lets you know Dabo Swinney is done messing around and views this Orange invasion as a viable threat. Clemson almost lost at Texas A&M in a game where Bryant?s experience came in handy, but that safety net won't be available here with Bryant transferring out.

?Cuse is hoping to move the ball as effectively as the Aggies did, looking to turn this into a shootout by keeping the Tigers' feared defensive line off balance by moving the pocket, getting it out quickly and mixing in QB draws. With Eric Dungey healthy enough to play, Syracuse has a playmaker who has the mobility and arm talent to make the country?s top defensive front to work for everything it gets. In case you?ve forgotten, Syracuse beat Clemson 27-24 at the Carrier Dome last season. The Orange will have to deal with the elements for the first time since the season opener at Western Michigan since they've played their last three games at the Carrier Dome, but rain in the area isn't scheduled to arrive until later in the day.

Ole Miss at LSU, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN: LSU's Tigers stepped out of the spotlight briefly last week after their huge road upset of Auburn, wearing down a pretty good Louisiana Tech squad. Now the Rebels arrive in Death Valley and present a different challenge than they?ve seen thus far given the receivers who will test Greedy Williams and the LSU secondary here. Miami had a few viable threats but top receiver Ahmmon Richards was hurt in the season opener while Auburn was hampered by the lack of a true go-to guy, but Ole Miss brings a different set of strengths to the table.

Senior QB Jordan Ta?amu looks to shake off a shoulder issue and perform more consistently than he has over the past few weeks. A.J. Brown, the leading returning WR from the Rebs? elite group, is also expected to overcome a hamstring issue to participate. LSU hung 40 on Ole Miss in Oxford last season, so Ohio State transfer Joe Burrow could have a big day and announce his candidacy for mayor of Baton Rouge afterward. Nose tackle Benito Jones and corner Ken Webster, the Rebs' most talented defensive players, have both been upgraded to probable.

BYU at Washington, 8:30 p.m. ET, FOX: The Cougars knocked off McNeese State last week and now look to go back into giant-killer mode as they venture into Seattle. Coming off a win at Wisconsin on its last road trip, BYU can pull off an upset of Washington given how physical they can be on both sides of the ball and will look to frustrate Jake Browning into mistakes. The Huskies will need to ride electric senior RB Myles Gaskin to keep the heat off their quarterback, which could result in a lower-scoring game where the clock is constantly running.

Center Nick Harris returned for the Huskies and graded out well against Arizona State, so the Washington offensive line should be up to the challenge of banging up front with BYU. The U-Dub defense has been bolstered by the continued emergence of standout LB Ben Burr-Kirven, who has back-to-back Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and is coming off of a 20-tackle game. Look for him to be an x-factor here.

USC at Arizona, 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2: After surviving Washington State at the Coliseum, a young Trojans team faces a crossroads game against the Wildcats, who are looking for their own resurgence as they try and turn the corner in Kevin Sumlin?s first season following a road conquest at Oregon State in the Pac-12 opener. There?s still time for Khalil Tate to turn things around, especially since defenses must now key in on sophomore RB J.J. Taylor after his eye-opening 284-yard day against the Beavers. If Sumlin can snap a five-year losing streak to USC, who the 'Cats haven't beaten since Rich Rodriguez's first season, he will have some momentum to work with entering a challenging October.

USC is playing their third road game in four weeks and have largely struggled outside the L.A. Coliseum, coming in 10-12 under Clay Helton. It also works against them that their defensive depth has been compromised by injuries, which is one factor why they've only forced two turnovers through their first four games. USC caught a break that top DE Porter Gustin wasn't ejected for targeting for a second straight game against WSU, so he'll be available here from the onset. WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown (shoulder) and Velus Jones (elbow) will be out there as targets for true freshman QB J.T. Daniels.

South Carolina at Kentucky, 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC: 'Cats RB Benny Snell is a surprise Heisman candidate now, so hopefully you took advantage of my preseason column on longshots and got in on the 300-to-1 preseason odds. The Wildcats are undefeated and nationally-ranked as they welcome in the Gamecocks, a program that?s undoubtedly higher on the football pecking order in the SEC. That perception may lead you to miss the fact that Kentucky has actually beaten South Carolina four straight times. If QB Terry Wilson can limit turnovers, a fifth consecutive win could be in the cards.

Senior LB Josh Allen has also gotten a lot of love after a dominant performance in last Saturday's upset of Mississippi State, so his ability to again be disruptive against Bentley will be as big a key for UK as Snell getting the running game going. South Carolina QB Jake Bentley struggled with turnovers in the blowout loss to Georgia and was intercepted twice despite throwing for 304 yards in the loss to Kentucky in Columbia last season. The Gamecocks are without standout DE D.J. Wonnum and will be looking to win consecutive home games for the first time under Will Muschamp, having not done so since 2013.

Utah at Washington State, 6 p.m. ET, Pac-12: Although both teams lost their Pac-12 opener, they're sound enough to put together a run and get back in contention for a conference title so long as they can pick up a win here. They're in different divisions and only one can prevail, so this one should be riveting given all the preseason aspirations on the line. The Utes come off a bye and have excelled under Kyle Whittingham with extra time to work, entering this game 20-6 in those situations. Meanwhile, Mike Leach has won three straight in the series and is looking for a 10th consecutive win in Pullman.

Temperatures could dip into the 40s and there may be some wind to deal with, so we'll get our first taste of true October football weather here. Washington State QB Gardner Minshew has thrived in taking over for record-setting passer Luke Falk, but this will be the best defense he's seen so far, superior to even last week's USC group. The Cougs will have to deal with a true dual threat in Tyler Huntley for the first time all season but catch a break in talented Utes DE Leki Fotu being unable to play until the second half after being tossed for targeting two weeks ago against Washington.

Others to watch: Oregon at Cal, Iowa State at TCU, Virginia Tech at Duke, Purdue at Nebraska, Texas at Kansas State, Michigan at Northwestern, Baylor at Oklahoma, Virginia at N.C. State, Florida Atlantic at Middle Tennessee, Pittsburgh at UCF, Florida State at Louisville, Toledo at Fresno State, Temple at Boston College.

Tulane runs for 4 TDs; beats Memphis 40-24
September 28, 2018

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Darius Bradwell and Corey Dauphine each had two touchdowns and Tulane beat Memphis 40-24 on Friday night to snap an 11-game losing streak in the series.

The Tulane defense, allowing 491.5 yards per game, held Memphis to 277 yards - including just 51 rushing yards for the national leader Darrell Henderson. The Green Wave had eight sacks after entering with just six on the season.

Bradwell carried it 19 times for 143 yards and Dauphine added 87 yards for Tulane (2-3, 1-0 American Athletic Conference). Bradwell, a junior, had a career-high 103 yards rushing in the first half, including a 53-yard touchdown.

Dauphine and Bradwell scored on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter to make it 40-14.

Brady White threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns for Memphis (3-2, 0-2). Henderson, averaging 177.3 rushing yards per game, scored twice - including a 43- yard catch-and-run to pull Memphis within 17-14.

Montez has 3 TDs as Buffs beat Bruins 38-16
September 28, 2018

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Steven Montez was 22-of-26 passing for 237 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores to lead Colorado over UCLA 38-16 on Friday night.

Montez rushed for 81 yards and Laviska Shenault Jr. caught a career-best 12 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for Colorado (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12).

Joshua Kelley ran for 124 yards and Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a touchdown pass for UCLA (0-4, 0-1), which is looking for its first win in the Chip Kelly era. The Bruins have lost their first four games for the first time since 1971.

UCLA went ahead 10-7 on an 11-yard pass from Thompson-Robinson to Michael Ezeike and a short field goal. JJ Molson hit from 50 yards at the end of the first half, and then gave UCLA a 16-14 lead with a 40-yard field goal early in the third.

But it was all Colorado after that. Shenault, who scored the Buffaloes' first touchdown on a 57-yard reception, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 21-16.

Travon McMillian, who had 102 yards rushing, scored from 6 yards out for a 28-16 lead and Montez put it away with a 35-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth.

THE TAKEAWAY

UCLA: The Bruins have lost 12 straight true road games and 11 conference road games. Their last road win was 17-14 at BYU on Sept. 17, 2016. The last time they won a conference road game was 17-9 at Utah on Nov. 21, 2015.

Colorado: The Buffaloes are 4-0 for the first time since 1998. They started 3-0 last season before losing seven of their last nine.

?I worked out with him (Jimmy Butler) all summer so when I said what I meant, it was like a right hook, I didn?t see it coming. I didn?t know. I thought ? it looked like from everything things were going good. But sometimes it?s a money aspect and fans and different players got to understand that. I understand that with being in the league for so many years, but got to try to just see what we can do. ? One thing about everybody who?s here, from the coaching staff, players, everybody?s familiar with each other, we?ve been through a lot together so we just got to keep trying.?

Stanford at Notre Dame
September 28, 2018
By Brian Edwards

Matchup: No. 7 Stanford at No. 8 Notre Dame
Venue: Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame, Indiana
TV/Time: ABC, 7:30 p.m. ET

Stanford (4-0 straight up, 3-1 against the spread) is in a back-to-back road spot Saturday night as it travels across the country to face Notre Dame. As of Friday afternoon, most betting shops had the Fighting Irish installed as a 5.5-point home favorite with a total of 53. The Cardinal were available on the money line for a +190 return (risk $100 to win $190).

Stanford has compiled a 12-4-1 spread record in 17 games as an underdog during David Shaw?s eight-year tenure. However, we should note that the Cardinal is just 5-4-1 ATS in 10 games as a road underdog on Shaw?s watch.

Stanford trailed 24-7 at Oregon late in the third quarter when the Ducks appeared to extend the lead with another TD. However, the instant-replay booth reversed the TD call and marked the ball on the one yard line. Two plays later, Oregon fumbled and Stanford?s Joey Alfieri recovered and completely changed the game with an 80-yard scoop-and-score TD.

After a quick stop by the defense, Bryce Love scored on a 22-yard TD run to trim the deficit to 24-21. The Ducks responded with a TD to make it 31-21 with only 4:39 remaining. But the Cardinal wouldn?t go away, striking back quickly on a 15-yard TD pass from K.J. Costello to J.J. Arcega-Whiteside with 3:10 left.

On a second-and-three play deep in Stanford territory, Oregon was attempting to gain one more first down to ice the game. But RB C.J. Verdell tried to extend the ball out to the first-down marker and had it jolted loose before he was down. Stanford recovered the fumble and had life once again.

Costello would take advantage, hustling his offense into field-goal range. Jet Toner buried a 32-yard FG on the final play of regulation to force overtime. On the opening possession of the extra session, Costello hit Colby Parkinson with a 23-yard scoring strike to go ahead 38-31. Stanford?s Alameen Murphy put the game on ice when he intercepted Justin Herbert?s pass in the end zone.

Stanford captured a 38-31 win as a three-point road favorite, with the 69 combined points going ?over? the 59-point total. Costello threw for 327 yards and three TDs without an interception. RS sophomore TE Kaden Smith had six receptions for 95 yards, while Arcega-Whiteside had four catches for 84 yards and two TDs.

Love rushed for 89 yards and one TD on 19 carries at Autzen Stadium. For the season, Love has run for 254 yards and two TDs with a 4.3 yards-per-carry average. He has four catches for 27 yards through three games (he sat in Week 3 vs. UC Davis).

Costello, a RS sophomore, has completed 64.0 percent of his passes for 1,056 yards with a 10/3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Arcega-Whiteside has 17 receptions for 408 yards and seven TDs, while Smith has 18 catches for 258 yards. Trenton Irwin has caught 15 balls for 127 yards, while Parkinson has eight grabs for 103 yards and three TDs.

Like I said as a guest on Golic and Wingo on ESPN2 Friday morning, it?s baffling to watch the conservative play-calling by the Cardinal, particularly in the first half of games. It?s as if Shaw is in love with 2nd-and-12 situations, insisting on establishing the run early on even when opposing defenses stack the box with eight (and sometimes even nine!) players keying on Love.

It would make life a whole lot easier for Love if Stanford would come out at Notre Dame and use a lot of play-action calls early. Unless facing double coverage, Arcega-Whiteside and Smith are going to be open on nearly every play. And hell, it doesn?t even matter if Smith is well covered because ? as he displayed with two incredible TD grabs in last year?s Pac-12 Championship Game ? he?ll go up and get the ball in traffic.

There?s nothing wrong with using the aerial attack to set up the run. As evidenced by its slow offensive starts in every game this season, the opposite plan is ineffective and must be a source of frustration for all of Stanford?s skill players.

There?s zero excuse for the Cardinal to be ranked No. 101 in the nation in total offense and No. 120 in rushing yards with merely 104.2 yards per game on the ground. As for Stanford?s stop unit, it is ranked 12th in the country in scoring defense (13.5 points per game).

Before its electric rally at Oregon, Stanford won home games over San Diego State (31-10), USC (17-3) and UC Davis (30-10).

Notre Dame (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) won three one-possession games in South Bend to start the season, knocking off Michigan (24-17), Ball State (24-16) and Vanderbilt (22-17). The Fighting Irish were apparently tired of the anxiety brought on by nail-biter deep into the fourth quarter, because they went on the road last week and smashed Wake Forest 56-27 as six-point ?chalk.?

After the ?under? cashed in its first three games, Brian Kelly?s squad saw the 83 combined points scored in Winston Salem soar ?over? the 60-point total. Making his first start of the season, sophomore QB Ian Book completed 25-of-34 passes for 325 yards and two TDs without an interception. He also made plays with his legs by rushing for 43 yards and three TDs on 10 attempts.

Redshirt freshman RB Jafar Armstrong carried the ball eight times for 98 rushing yards and two TDs. WR Alize Mack had six receptions for 61 yards, while Chase Claypool had four grabs for 51 yards and one TD.

Book unseated Brandon Wimbush, who had a ? TD-INT ratio in the Irish?s first three games. Miles Boykin has nine receptions for a team-best 167 receiving yards on the season. Claypool has 11 catches for 151 yards and one TD, and Chris Finke has caught 14 balls for 142 yards and one TD.

Sophomore RB Tony Jones has produced a team-best 263 rushing yards and three TDs while averaging 5.7 YPC. Armstrong ha 245 rushing yards, five TDs and a 5.2 YPC average.

During Kelly?s nine-year tenure, Notre Dame is 19-23-3 ATS as a home favorite.

When these teams met at The Farm in Palo Alto last season, Stanford captured a 38-20 win over the ninth-ranked Irish as a 2.5-point home underdog. The 58 combined points slithered ?under? the 58.5-point tally.

Trailing 20-17 going into the fourth quarter, Shaw?s team outscored Notre Dame 21-0 in the final stanza. First, Costello found Smith on a 19-yard scoring strike for the go-ahead score. Next, Costello hooked up with Dalton Schultz for a 12-yard TD pass, and then Cameron Scarlett put the game away with a three-yard dash to paydirt.

Notre Dame had a 415-328 edge in total offense, but Wimbush was intercepted twice while Stanford played turnover-free football. Costello threw for 176 yards and four TDs without an interception, while Love ran for 125 yards on 20 carries. Smith had three receptions for 65 yards and one TD.

Stanford has won three in a row in this series, including a 17-10 win in South Bend in 2016. The Cardinal has prevailed in seven of the past nine head-to-head meetings, going 5-4 ATS. The ?under? has cashed at a lucrative 7-1 clip in the past eight encounters in this rivalry.

The ?under? is 3-1 overall for Stanford this year, but the ?over? hit in its first road assignment last week.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Since dropping a 47-27 decision to Ole Miss in Houston, Texas Tech has ripped off three consecutive wins both SU and ATS. That?s a good thing for Kliff Kingsbury, who has been on the hot seat for the last year and change. The Red Raiders made a huge statement last week in Stillwater, trouncing Oklahoma State 41-17 as 14.5-point road underdogs. True freshman Alan Bowman has established himself as the clear-cut starting QB, completing 72.1 percent of his passes for 1,557 yards with a 10/2 TD-INT ratio. Texas Tech is 6-5 ATS as a home underdog during Kingsbury?s tenure six-year tenure. As of Wednesday night, West Virginia was favored by 3.5 points for its trip to Lubbock on Saturday for a noon Eastern kick.

-- With a hat tip here to Brad Powers, we share this nugget: Indiana is in its biggest road favorite role since 1990 as the Hoosiers go to Rutgers this week as 16.5-point favorites.

-- Buffalo star WR Anthony Johnson is ?questionable? for Saturday?s home game vs. Army. Johnson, who is dealing with a leg injury, has 18 receptions for 308 yards and three TDs for the unbeaten Bulls.

-- Less than three weeks after shoulder surgery, it appears as if Duke star QB Daniel Jones might be available for Saturday?s home game vs. Va. Tech. David Cutcliffe told the Charlotte Observer on Thursday, ?I can?t tell you what I know except that he has practice and done well.? Jones had started 27 games in a row since the day he arrived on campus. The true junior had four TD passes without an interception and one rushing score in the Blue Devils? first two games. The Hokies will be without star QB Josh Jackson, who broke his leg in last week?s stunning loss at Old Dominion.

-- The 4-0 ATS Perfection Club consists of Utah State, Virginia, Washington State, FIU and Texas A&M. West Virginia, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern are 3-0 ATS, while Syracuse is 3-0-1 versus the number.

-- There are six teams with 0-4 ATS records: Oregon, FAU, Wake Forest, USC, Ga. Tech and Louisville. Nebraska is 0-3 ATS while UTSA, UConn and Arkansas are 0-3-1 ATS.

-- Hawaii, a 10-point road ?chalk? at San Jose State, has failed to cover the spread in five consecutive games as a road favorite. With that said, we?ll point out that QB Cole McDonald continues to shred defenses for the 4-1 Warriors. McDonald has a 20/1 TD-INT ratio in his first five career starts.

-- No. Illinois, a three-point underdog at Eastern Michigan, has won 10 games in a row over the Eagles, including back-to-back victories in overtime. Eastern Michigan returns home after three straight road assignments.

SEC Notebook - Week 5
September 28, 2018
By Brian Edwards

**Arkansas at Texas A&M**

-- As of early Friday evening, most betting shops had Texas A&M (2-2 straight up, 4-0 against the spread) installed as a 21-point favorite for this annual showdown at Jerry World. The total was 61 on Wednesday but was down to 59 Friday night. William Hill had the Razorbacks with 10/1 money-line odds (risk $100 to win $1,000).

-- Arkansas (1-3 SU, 0-3-1 ATS) saw last year?s leading WR quit the team earlier this week. Jonathan Nance, who had team-highs in receptions (37), receiving yards (539) and TD catches (five) in 2017, had only one catch for negative two yards before walking away from Chad Morris?s program. Junior WR La?Michael Pettway is ?questionable? due to an undisclosed injury, while RB Devwah Whaley is ?doubtful? with a concussion. Pettway paces the Razorbacks with 11 catches for 169 yards and three TDs. Whaley is the Hogs? leading rusher, producing 231 yards and two TDs with a 4.4 yards-per-carry average.

-- My Man, Wess Moore, who has covered the Hogs for more than a decade and often has me as a guest on his radio show, told me via text on Thursday that Whaley is ?out? and that Pettway is ?probably going to be good to go.?

-- Since beating Eastern Illinois 55-20 as a 35-point home favorite in its opener, Arkansas has dropped three games in a row at Colorado St. (34-27 after leading 27-9 late in the third quarter), vs. North Texas (44-17) and at Auburn (34-3). That?s ?no bueno.?

-- Texas A&M has won six games in a row over Arkansas, including three overtime victories. The Aggies captured a 50-43 win in an Instant Classic last season as two-point favorites. Kellen Mond threw for 216 yards and two TDs with one interception. He also rushed for a team-best 109 yards on 10 carries. Trayvon Williams rushed for 72 yards and one TD on 17 carries. Arkansas RB Chase Hayden ran for 77 yards and one TD on 13 totes.

-- Jimbo Fisher?s club is the nation?s best two-loss team, covering the spread in both losses vs. Clemson (28-26) and at Alabama (45-23). Mond's nine-yard TD run with 7:36 remaining gave the Aggies the backdoor cover as 24-point underdogs. Mond ran for a team-high 98 yards on 18 attempts, but he was intercepted twice and completed merely 16-of-33 passes.

-- The Hogs have seen the ?under? appear in three straight games since the ?over? was a winner vs. Eastern Illinois.

-- The ?over? is 3-1 overall for the Aggies.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at noon Eastern.

**Florida at Mississippi State**

-- Dan Mullen spent nine seasons at Mississippi State, guiding the Bulldogs to eight consecutive postseason appearances and a one-month ride atop the national rankings when Dak Prescott was a junior in 2014. In a Bobby Petrino at Louisville (Round 1) sort of way, however, Mullen?s name seemed to pop up for a lot of other jobs, especially in the last 3-4 years of his tenure. Couple that in with the fact that Florida also hired AD Scott Stricklin away from MSU, and you have a lot of bitterness toward the school?s former coach. Furthermore, after a three-week run of blowout victories including a route of Kansas State in Manhattan, the Bulldogs stunningly got spanked 28-7 at Kentucky as 9.5-point road favorites. Meanwhile, the Gators are off a feel-good pimpslap of the Volunteers up at The Swamp North in East Tennessee. That?s the backdrop for Saturday night?s showdown at Scott Field in Starkville, a venue that hasn't been kind to UF for many decades.

-- Florida (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) thumped UT 47-21 as a 3.5-point road favorite last week in Knoxville. The 68 combined points obliterated the 46-point total for ?over? backers. Feleipe Franks threw three TD passes without an interception and also scored on a one-yard TD run. He hit Freddie Swain for a 65-yard scoring strike to give his team a 23-3 lead early in the second quarter. Jordan Scarlett?s 19-yard TD run only 16 seconds into the third quarter put UF up by a 33-3 count. It smelled like 1996 at Neyland Stadium when Danny Wuerffel led Florida to a 35-0 first-quarter lead over Peyton Manning and the Vols. It reminded me of my only trip to Neyland in 1994 when Steve Spurrier said ?starters back in? as Mannning, as a true freshman, had the Vols in the red zone trailing 31-0 late in the fourth quarter. It was UF?s 13th win in the past 14 games of this rivalry. Like I said to many of my UT friends in the fall of 2007 when they universally wanted to move on from Phil Fulmer, ?Careful what you wish for! Careful!? A passionate fan base that had to endure an extremely agonizing and nationally-embarrassing coaching search 10 months ago was left hoping that another beatdown from the Gators was rock bottom last Saturday night. Is it though? Only time will tell.

-- As of early Friday night, most books had Mississippi State (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) listed as a seven-point favorite with a total of 49. The Gators were +220 on the money line (risk $100 to win $220).

-- I still don?t trust Franks, but he?s now had two quality performances at UT and vs. Charleston Southern. For the season, the third-year sophomore from Wakulla High School (FL) has completed 52.6 percent of his throws for 742 yards with a 12/2 TD-INT ratio. Swain has eight receptions for 193 yards and three TDs, while Van Jefferson has eight catches for 127 yards and three TDs.

-- True freshman Dameon Pierce has rushed for a team-high 225 yards and two TDs for an 11.3 YPC average. Scarlett, who missed all of 2017 due to a suspension, has run for 182 yards and two TDs while averaging 6.1 YPC. Franks has contributed 114 rushing yards and one TD.

-- UF was an abysmal 1-5-1 ATS as a road underdog during Jim McElwain?s Chafe-City tenure, although we have to credit an 0-2 ATS mark in two of those spots to interim head coach Randy Shannon, a former ?Cane who should?ve never been wearing orange and blue (Thanks, Swamp Donkey!).

-- Mississippi State started 3-0 with wins vs. Stephen F. Austin (63-6), at Kansas St. (31-10) and vs. UL-Lafayette (56-10). However, the feel-good story for Chapter 1 in the reign of Joe Moorhead, the former Penn State offensive coordinator who is in his first HC gig at the FBS level (he went 38-13 at Fordham in the FCS from 2012-15 before joining James Franklin?s PSU staff), ended abruptly in Lexington. False starts put the offense in bad field position. MSU averaged only 2.0 YPC running the ball. The Bulldogs were guilty of 16 penalties for 139 yards. Nick Fitzgerald was limited to 20 rushing yards and one TD on 16 carries. He completed only 50 percent of 32 passes for 145 yards and one interception.

-- MSU has compiled a 25-16 spread record in 41 games as a home favorite since 2009.

-- Totals have been an overall wash for the Gators (2-2) with the ?over? hitting in their lone road trip.

-- The ?under? is 2-1 overall for the Bulldogs, but the ?over? hit on its lone home game with a total.

-- These teams haven?t met since Mullen led MSU into The Swamp and emerged with a 10-7 win as an 8.5-point underdog. Florida won in Starkville by a 29-19 score in Tim Tebow?s senior year (?09), but the Bulldogs easily covered the number as 22.5-point home underdogs.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**South Carolina at Kentucky**

-- Several offshore books opened South Carolina (2-1 straight up, 2-1 against the spread) as a 1.5-point road favorite at unbeaten Kentucky. That number was sent out late Sunday afternoon but by lunch on Monday, nearly all betting shops had the Wildcats favored by 1 ? points.

-- The number hadn?t moved much until Thursday afternoon when some books adjusted UK to -1 while others moved the game to a pick ?em. The Mirage had the Gamecocks as one-point favorites with a total of 51.5 for ?over/under? wagers by late Thursday afternoon. There were a lot of pick ?ems on the board Friday.

-- South Carolina was in its first road favorite role during Will Muschamp?s tenure last week at Vanderbilt. The result was an easy spread cover in USC?s 37-14 win as a 2.5-point ?chalk.? The 51 combined points dropped ?under? the 53.5-point total.

-- The Gamecocks have covered the spread in five straight road games. They?re 7-0 ATS in their past seven games played away from Williams-Brice Stadium (wins over N.C. State and Michigan on neutral fields).

-- Mark Stoops?s team improved to 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS with its 28-7 win over Mississippi State as a 9.5-point home underdog. The Wildcats hooked up money-line supporters with a +300 return (paid $300 on $100 wagers for UK to win outright). Kentucky?s win and spread cover improved it to 4-11-2 ATS when listed as a home underdog on Stoops?s watch. The ?Cats have failed to cover the spread in eight consecutive contests when they?re home favorites.

-- Perhaps those numbers above should be ignored, however? I say that because it seems clear that UK has its best team since Stoops arrived in 2013. RB Benny Snell is tops in the SEC and third in the nation with 540 rushing yards. The defense is filled with future NFL players like free safety Mike Edwards, strong safety Darius West, DE Josh Allen and LB Jordan Jones.

-- USC has major revenge as a motivator with four straight losses against the ?Cats, who are 5-0 ATS in the past five games of this rivalry. I?m not sure UK?s offensive line can handle a beast like Javon Kinlaw, who dominated the Commodores last week. Kinlaw has recorded 13 tackles, three QB hurries, 2.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in three games this season.

-- The ?over? has cashed at a 4-1 clip in USC?s past five trips to Lexington. The ?over? is 2-1 for the Gamecocks this year, 2-2 for the ?Cats.

-- South Carolina sophomore WR OrTre Smith will miss the rest of the season. Smith had 30 receptions for 326 yards as a true freshman in 2017.

-- Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Alabama was favored by 49 points for Saturday?s home contest vs. UL-Lafayette, as of late Friday afternoon. The total was 68 points. The Crimson Tide has limped to a 2-8 spread in 10 games as a favorite of 40 points or more during Nick Saban?s dynastic tenure. UL-Lafayette is 25-16 ATS as a road underdog since 2010. As we noted last week, Alabama?s team totals for the first quarter, first half and the game have cashed at a 12-0 clip so far this season. The Tide failed to take the cash for the first time last week when Texas A&M got a late TD for a backdoor cover.

-- LSU will play host to Ole Miss at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. As of early Friday night, most spots had the Tigers favored by 10 points with a total of 60. The Rebels were +300 on the money line. Ed Orgeron?s team takes an undefeated record into this contest in hopes of improving to 13-3 ATS in SEC play during the ?Hey, Geaux Tigers? Era under Coach O. The Tigers beat La. Tech 38-21 in Baton Rouge last weekend, but the Bulldogs took the cash as 19.5-point road underdogs. The road team had won five in a row in this rivalry until LSU won 40-24 in Oxford last year.

-- I think a lot of the criticism toward Joe Burrow is ridiculous. He?s been with this team and his WRs for about two months. Who thought LSU would be 4-0 going into a home game vs. Ole Miss as a double-digit favorite this past summer? Not me. Sure, Burrow has missed some throws and his 49.1 percent completion percentage is below average, but guess what else he?s done? Better yet, what hasn?t he done? The former Ohio St. QB hasn?t thrown an interception. Burrow has thrown three TD passes and rushed for another score. Last time I checked, the formula for success ? and lots of it, particularly at LSU ? was playing great defense, running the football and winning the turnover battle and special teams. Don?t let Alabama?s dynastic run stain this recipe. LSU will beat the Rebels on Saturday and go to Gainesville with an unblemished record. If it can emerge from The Swamp unscathed, a three-week stretch of bloodbaths at Tiger Stadium awaits vs. Georgia. vs. Mississippi St. (with the Bulldogs getting two weeks to prepare) and vs. Alabama (when both teams have an open date beforehand). That?s a pretty (pretty, pretty, pretty!) good situation considering how seemingly most of the national media had LSU winning only six of seven games and Orgeron getting shipped out of town about 30 days ago.

-- Auburn will take on Southern Miss at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers were favored by 27 points and the total was 53 as of early Friday night.

-- Tennessee is in its second-richest underdog spot in school history Saturday when it?s catching 31 points at Georgia. CBS will have the telecast at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

-- RIP: LSU basketball player Wayde Sims, who was the victim of an unfathomable murder in Baton Rouge on Thursday night. Wayde was the son of Wayne Sims, a stout power forward for the Tigers who played with Shaq and Chris Jackson during the Larry Brown Era.

-- After losing 43-29 at home vs. Georgia as a 14-point home underdog, Missouri is off this weekend. Vandy is hosting Tennessee State in non-conference play.

Saturday?s best 13 games

Since 2010, Duke is 18-10 as home favorites, but they failed to cover last six tries as a home fave in ACC games. Virginia Tech lost as a 27-point road favorite to in-state upstart Old Dominion LW; ODU threw ball for 495 yards. Home side lost four of Hokies? last five games with Duke, only one of which was decided by more than 3 points (underdogs 4-1 vs spread). Tech covered seven of last nine tries as road underdogs; under Fuente, they?re 4-3 vs spread off a loss. Blue Devils are 4-0 with a couple road wins, including a win at Northwestern.

Kentucky beat South Carolina the last four years, winning 17-10/45-38 in two games played here. Underdogs covered four of last five series games. Kentucky is 0-6 vs spread the last six times they were home favorites; they?re 5-2 under Stoops in games with spread of 3 or fewer points. Gamecocks covered their last seven games away from Columbia; they?re 10-2 in last dozen games with spread of 3 or less points. Carolina is 12-10 vs spread in its last 22 games as road underdogs.

Virginia-NC State are ACC rivals meeting for first time since 2012; road team won last two series games. Virginia outgained Louisville 401-214 in surprisingly easy 27-3 home win LW; under Mendenhall, Cavaliers are 6-6 as road underdogs- since ?10, they?re 13-19 as a single digit underdog. Under Doeren, NC State is 11-12 vs spread as home favorites, 2-7 in ACC games- they?re 8-7 in last 15 games as single digit favorites. Wolfpack are 3-0 this season, beating two stiffs, then winning 37-20 at Marshall last week.

Washington State won its last three games with Utah, by 12-1-8 points; Utes split last two visits to Pullman, losing 49-37, winning 30-27. Utes scored total of only 24 points in splitting couple games vs I-A games this month; they gained only 261 yards in 21-7 home loss to Washington LW. Utah is 4-2-1 in its last seven games as road favorites. Wazzu lost tough 39-36 game at USC LW; they played on Thursday, but Utah had last week off, so they had few extra days to prep for this. Coogs covered 11 of last 15 games as an underdog.

Florida State is already 0-2 in ACC, scoring total of just 10 points in losses to Va Tech and at Syracuse. Seminoles ran ball for 92.3 yds/game in three games vs I-A opponents. FSU is 7-12-2 vs spread in their last 21 games as an ACC road favorite. Louisville/FSU are both having down years; Cardinals beat FSU last two years, 31-28/63-20. Louisville is 1-2 vs I-A foes and they were outgained by 428-292 in the win, 20-17 over WKU; under Petrino, Cardinals are 2-2 as home underdogs; since 2011, they?re 10-7 as a single digit underdog.

Ohio State won five of last six games with Penn State, losing 24-21 in last visit here; home team covered last five series games. Buckeyes are 4-0, wasting three stiffs, also beating TCU 40-28 in Dallas; yardage in that game was 526-511- Horned Frogs ran for 203 yards, threw for 308. OSU is 8-6 in last 14 games as road favorite, 9-6 in last 15 games as single digit favorite. Since 2012. Penn State is 3-2 as a home underdog; they?ve outscored last three opponents 108-7 in second half of games, but those teams are also stiffs. Since ?12, Lions are 9-6 as single digit dogs.

Kansas State lost 31-10/35-6 in its two games vs decent teams this month; since ?09, Wildcats are 12-7 as home underdogs- they?re 27-10 vs spread overall in last 37 games as a dog. K-State was outgained 1,002-531 in those two losses this month; they?re down this year. Texas scored 32 ppg in winning three straight home tilts after losing opener 34-29 at Maryland; since ?08, Texas is 18-12 as road favorites- they?re 4-7 in last 11 games as single digit favorites. Home side won last five series games; Longhorns lost 24-21/23-0 in last two visits here.

West Virginia won its last four games with Texas Tech, winning 48-17/37-34 in last two visits to Lubbock; average total in those games was 68.5. Under Holgorsen, WVU is 8-8-1 as road faves; since 2012, they?re 9-19 vs spread when laying a single digit spread. Mountaineers are 3-0 with easy home wins over Tennessee/K-State; this is their road opener. Under Kingbury, Tech is 7-5 as home underdogs; Red Raiders are 12-8 vs spread in last 20 games as an underdog. Tech won its last two games, scoring 104 points- they whacked Oklahoma State 41-17 in Stillwater LW.

Dan Mullen bolted Mississippi State for bigger-$$$ Florida last winter; now he returns with his Gators here, in teams? first meeting since 2010. Florida scored 95 points in whipping Colorado St/Tennessee last two games, but those teams are stiffs; Gators are 2-6-1 vs spread in last nine games as an underdog. Miss State has a senior QB but got spanked 28-7 at Kentucky LW; since 2010, Bulldogs are 22-15-1 as home favorites, 12-4 as single digit fave. MSU is 14-9 vs spread in last 23 games coming off a loss.

Home side won five of last six Ole Miss-LSU games; Rebels lost last three visits here, by 17-3-6 points. Since ?08, Ole Miss is 17-8 as road underdogs; they covered 8 of last 12 games as double digit dogs. Rebels gave up 41 points, 629 yards to a I-AA team, so buyer beware. LSU is 4-0 with wins over Miami/Auburn; under Orgeron, Tigers are 2-4 as home favorites- they?re 15-21 in last 21 games as double digit favorites. Orgeron went 10-25 in three years as Ole Miss? coach from 2005-07; somehow he landed the higher-profile LSU job.

USC lost 17-3/37-14 in its two road games this year; they won their last five games with Arizona, winning 48-14/28-26 in last two visits here. Under Helton, Trojans are 4-2 as road favorites; since ?13, USC is 8-5 as a Pac-12 road favorite. Arizona ran ball for 442 yards in 35-14 win at Oregon State- they were just 9-17 throwing ball. Wildcats are 12-8 in last 20 games as a home underdog- they?re 3-7 in last ten games with spread of 3 or less points. Keep in mind that USC?s QB is a true frosh who left HS a year early- he should still be playing in HS.

Stanford is 4-0 after 38-31 win at Oregon LW, when they were outgained 524-398; Cardinal won its last three games with Notre Dame, winning by 18-7-2 points. Average total in Stanford?s last three visits here was 30.3- average total in series games played in Palo Alto, 59.7. Under shaw, Stanford is 5-4-1 as road underdogs. Last 2+ years, Notre Dame is 5-9 as home favorites; they?re 3-8 in last 11 games as single digit favorites. Irish ran ball for 245-241 yards in their last couple games. Pac-12 teams are 8-10-1 vs spread out of conference this season.

Oregon won five of its last six games with Cal, but lost 52-49 in OT in last visit here. Average total in last four series games is 85.5. Since ?08, Ducks are 22-12 as road favorites (1-3 in last four). Oregon is 2-5-1 in last eight games where spread was 3 or fewer points. Ducks lost 38-31 to Stanford LW, despite outgaining Cardinal 524-398; this is their first road game. Bears are 6-2 in last eight games as a home underdog; they covered last three games where spread was 3 or less points. Cal is 3-0 this year, with a decent win at BYU.

BUCKEYES TOPPLE NITTANY LIONS

The largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history, a sparkling whiteout, was rocking. Penn State and its dynamic and gritty quarterback Trace McSorley had Ohio State reeling midway through the fourth quarter.

And then just like that, everything changed, and for the second year in a row the Buckeyes swiped victory away from the Nittany Lions in another wild game between the Big Ten powerhouses.

Dwayne Haskins threw two touchdown passes in the final seven minutes as No. 4 Ohio State wiped out a 12-point deficit to beat No. 9 Penn State 27-26.

McSorley set a school record with 461 yards of total offense, including a career-high 175 rushing and threw two touchdown passes, and the Nittany Lions went up 26-14 with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

CLEMSON SURVIVES SYRACUSE

Should No. 3 Clemson fulfill its championship aspirations this season, prepare to hear plenty about ''The Drive.''

With new starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence knocked out of the game, reserve Chase Brice - who was about sixth on the depth chart last January - guided a 94-yard, fourth-quarter scoring drive that ended with Travis Etienne's 2-yard touchdown run with 41 seconds and gave the Tigers a 27-23 victory over Syracuse.

Lawrence supplanted senior Kelly Bryant as starter. A day later, Bryant said he was transferring and that he felt he did not get a fair shake at keeping the job.

Then in the second quarter, a shaky Lawrence took hard hit to the head, wobbled to the sidelines and did not return.

ROLLING TIDE QUARTERBACKS

Jaylen Waddle returned a punt for a touchdown and caught two scoring passes, including a 94-yarder, and Jalen Hurts made a statement just by playing in the Crimson Tide's 56-14 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.

Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Hurts staked the Crimson Tide to a 49-0 halftime lead over the Ragin' Cajuns en route to the defending national champions' latest blowout.

Hurts, who twice led Alabama to national championship games but lost his starting job, erased any question about possibly taking a redshirt year by playing in his fifth game.

Tagovailoa completed all eight of his attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns, mostly in the first quarter. Hurts was 4 of 6 for 118 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown to Henry Ruggs III.

2) Bronx 42,998

3) St Louis 42,019

4) San Francisco 38,965

5) Chicago Cubs 38,798

6) LA Angels 37,286

Quote of the Day
?We were terrible on offense. I don?t think it made a difference for the offense. That?s what it was. It was as bad as we?ve played on offense with that many yards in a long time.?
Aaron Rodgers

Which current NFL player played for the Amsterdam Admirals, in 1996?

Monday?s quiz
Tom Brady tied an NFL record Sunday, throwing a TD pass to his 70th receiver; he shares this record with Vinny Testaverde.

Sunday?s quiz
Saints? coach Sean Payton was a QB for the Chicago Bears in the strike replacement games they had during the 1987 season.

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) You don?t think pro football players are tough? Vikings? long snapper Kevin McDermott lost the tip off of his left pinky Thursday, when it got caught in a player?s helmet. He didn?t just lose his fingernail, he lost the tip of his finger, and later on, he came back into the game, missing only one punt snap while they bandaged up the finger.

12) Bad beat from late Saturday night: USC was -3.5 over Arizona, and led 24-14 in the last 2:00. Wildcats had 4th-and-goal inside the 10-yard line, but instead of kicking the easy FG to make the game a one-score game, Kevin Sumlin goes for it and Arizona scores a TD with 1:40 left.

Now all they all have to do to cover the spread is make the extra poi? you got it, they missed, and USC won 24-20, covering by half a point.

11) UMass football coach Mark Whipple was suspended without pay for one week by the school, after he drew an analogy to rape while discussing a sequence in his team?s game.

On UMass? radio broadcast after the Minutemen?s 58-42 loss at Ohio U, Whipple referred to a play on which he believed the Bobcats should have been called for pass interference, saying, ?We had a chance there ? and they rape us, and (the referee) picks up the flag.?

No bueno. Choose your words better, coach.

10) Billy McKinney is a 24-year old OF for the Blue Jays who was a first round pick of the Oakland A?s five years ago. Weird thing is, he?s already been traded three times:

? July 5, 2014, A?s traded him to the Cubs as part of the Jeff Samardzija/Addison Russell swap.
? July 25, 2016, Cubs traded him to New York as part of the Aroldis Chapman trade.
? July 26, 2018, New York traded him to Toronto as part of the JA Happ swap.

9) After a 56-27 loss to Notre Dame last week, Wake Forest fired defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel; their defense scored two TD?s Saturday in a 56-24 win over Rice. Obviously Rice isn?t close to being as good as Notre Dame, but did the coaching change make a difference?

8) With Sam Bradford the #3 QB in Arizona now, he loses an active roster bonus of $312,500 per game, not that he is hurting for money. Bradford banked $65M in the five years he played for the Rams, so he should be OK financially.

7) The grandfather of Rams? WR Cooper Kupp was an offensive lineman in the NFL for 11 years; he played for the Saints in their early days, where he blocked for Archie Manning.

6) NHL?s Carolina Hurricanes will wear Hartford Whaler throwback uniforms for their December 23 home game; very cool green uniforms with the great Whaler logo. Hurricanes were the Hartford Whalers from 1972-97, before moving from Hartford to Raleigh.

5) Tony Parker looks weird in a Charlotte Hornets? uniform; he played 17 years for the Spurs. Some things you just get used to.

4) There is a US Senator from Rhode Island named Sheldon Whitehouse; if you?re a politician and your last name is Whitehouse, don?t you have to run for President?

3) Brewers 3, Cubs 1???.Dodgers 5, Rockies 2

Colorado visits Wrigley Field tonight in the NL Wild Card game.

2) Last week, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto started showing a presentation to his class of 500 students, but instead of his presentation showing on the screen, a hard core porn movie appeared. Whoops.

1) Last three games the Pittsburgh Steelers played at home, they allowed 37.7 ppg. Atlanta is coming to Steel City this coming Sunday; Falcons? defense is a mess, too.

Top 25 Notes

-- The Big Ten showdown between Ohio State and Penn State lived up to the pregame hype, as it was a classic in Beaver Stadium. That is, unless you had the 'over', as the total (69.5) was never in question with a defense first three quarters. There were just 27 total points on the board heading into the fourth quarter before the offenses combined for a total of 26 points. There was the specter of overtime giving over bettors some hope, but that never came into fruition. It's too bad, too, as this one was fun to watch so overtime would have been a treat. The Buckeyes moved to 5-0 SU/3-2 ATS, and the 'under' is now 3-1 over their past four outings.

-- Alabama flew out to a 49-0 lead on Louisiana, erasing the 49-point spread by halftime. Unfortunately for Tide side bettors, they took their foot off the gas and the Ragin' Cajuns scored two fourth quarter touchdowns and 14 unanswered points for the backdoor cover, with their final TD coming with 3:58 to go. After opening 3-0 ATS, the Tide are 0-2 ATS across the past two outings.

-- Clemson certainly got a scare, especially when their starting quarterback exited the game and the third-string signal caller entered against Syracuse. The Orange had a 23-13 lead at one point during the fourth quarter, but the Tigers stormed back for 14 unanswered points in the final quarter to avoid a major upset at the hands of 'Cuse for a second straight season.

-- Washington was not about to get bitten by the Brigham Young upset bug. The Huskies fired out to a 35-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter, using their lockdown secondary to stymie the upset-minded Cougars. The Huskies entered the day just 1-3 ATS, and it was their first cover in three tries at home. The 'under' is now a perfect 5-0 on the season for the Dawgs, too.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- North Carolina State kept their record unblemished with a 35-21 victory over Virginia. The Wolfpack improved to 4-0 SU/3-1 ATS, including 3-0 ATS over the past three games. If you were an 'under' bettors (53) you weren't terribly pleased about the finish of this one (see below). ... Virginia Tech rebounded in a big way with a 31-14 road win at Duke, serving up the Blue Devils their first loss in five games. After opening 3-0 ATS, Duke is now 0-2 ATS over the past two. ... Miami-Florida paddled North Carolina 47-10 to pick up their fourth straight victory while going 3-1 ATS during the span. The 'over' is also 4-1 in their five outings this season.

-- Michigan State took care of Central Michigan 31-20, moving to 3-1 SU while slipping to 1-3 ATS overall. ... Northwestern nearly pulled off the upset, leading Michigan for most of the contest. However, the Wolverines ended up with the 20-17 win in Evanston, slipping to 2-3 ATS. They haven't covered in consecutive games yet this season and they're 1-1 SU/0-2 ATS in two road contests. ... Nebraska cannot seem to get out of their own way, as Scott Frost slipped to 0-4 SU/ATS after a 42-28 loss to Purdue. After opening 0-3 SU, the Boilermakers have won two in a row and they have covered three straight.

-- Oklahoma slapped the brakes on a three-game non-cover skid with a 66-33 win over Baylor. It was another 'over' for the Sooners, the fourth in five outings so far this season. ... Texas picked up an uneventful 19-14 victory at Kansas State, their first victory in Manhattan since 2002. They're still 0-2 ATS in two games away from Austin this season. Next up is the Red River Rivalry Game against the Sooners in Dallas. ... The side winner changed a handful of times since the midway point of the third quarter in Oklahoma State-Kansas. The Cowboys were laying 17, and they were covering or pushing for a good chunk of the contest. They went up 20 midway through the third quarter, only for Kansas to scored a TD early in the fourth. OK State returned the favor with 6:22 to go to cover agin, but Kansas struck quickly with 4:19 to pull back within 13. After a failed onside kick, the Cowboys ended up with a short field and they scored with 2:38 to go to earn the 48-28 win and cover.

-- After falling last week at USC, Washington State rebounded with a 28-24 win at home against Utah as short 'dogs on the Palouse. The Cougars struck with 4:14 to go in regulation, taking a 28-24 lead on an 89-yard touchdown, flipping the side in favor of the Cougs, and the total (50.5) also flipped on the big play. ... One of the other marquee matchups was Stanford-Notre Dame, but someone forgot to tell the Cardinal. After an emotional comeback last week at Oregon, head coach David Shaw's group was unable to bring it to that high of an emotional level for the second straight week in a tough road outing. The Irish blew their doors off 38-7, improving to 5-0 SU/3-2 ATS. Notre Dame has covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

-- Kentucky moved to 5-0 SU with a 24-10 victory against South Carolina, picking up their second straight cover for the first time this season. Who had the Wildcats moving within one game of bowl eligibility and the calendar doesn't even read October yet? ... Texas A&M posted a 24-17 win over Arkansas, as they held on for the win but slipped to 4-1 ATS with their first non-cover. ... Florida picked up a 13-6 win at Mississippi State in the Dan Mullen Reunion Bowl in Starkville. After opening an impressive 3-0 SU/ATS, the Bulldogs are 0-2 SU/ATS while scoring just 6.5 PPG in two SEC battles and Auburn looming on the schedule next week.

Mid-Major Report

-- Tulane posted the 40-24 win over Memphis, the biggest underdog (+14.5, ML +450) to pick up an outright victory. ... Cincinnati rolled to a 49-7 win over Connecticut, easily earning the cover as 16-point road favorites. The Bearcats improved to 5-0 SU/4-1 ATS, while the Huskies slipped to 1-4 SU/ATS, and 0-4 SU/ATS in four outings against FBS schools. ... Temple was unable to score the outright upset at Boston College, but the Owls earned their third consecutive cover.

-- It was a topsy-turvy day in Conference USA, as the two championship game representatives from a year ago, Florida Atlantic and North Texas each suffered losses in their conference openers. Middle Tennessee picked up the 25-24 win, posting the go-ahead touchdown with :38 to go to flip the side and deal Owls side bettors a bad beat. FAU slipped to 0-5 ATS. ... UNT was dropped at home by Louisiana Tech, as a blocked field goal sealed their fate. The under has cashed in four in a row for the Mean Green.

-- The game of the day in the MAC was Northern Illinois-Eastern Michigan, as these teams couldn't solve their differences until the third overtime. NIU ended up with a 26-23 road win, and 'under' (50.5) had to sweat out a winning ticket for an extra hour. EMU has dropped back-to-back games in overtime, as they could very well be 4-1 SU. The Eagles are a solid 4-1 ATS so far. ... Miami-Ohio fell short against Western Michigan 40-39, but they held on for the cover at most shops. This line moved from Miami favored by 1.5 to WMU favored by 2.5 during the week, but the sharps got it wrong in this one.

-- New Mexico fell 52-43 to Liberty, in a high-scoring battle, as the 'over' is now 4-0 for UNM through four games. ... Fresno State posted an impressive 49-27 win over visiting Toledo, moving to 3-1 SU/ATS in four games this season. ... Hawaii was back on the mainland for the third time this season, and it ended a lot better than last time around. Well, sorta. They picked up a 44-41 win in overtime at San Jose State, scoring 41 or more points for the fifth time in five games. However, after opening 2-0 ATS they're just 0-3-1 ATS across their past four outings.

-- Troy earned a 45-21 win over Coastal Carolina to win and cover for the fourth straight outing. ... Appalachian State rolled to an impressive 52-7 win against South Alabama, picking up their fourth cover in as many outings. The 'over' is also a perfect 4-0 so far this season for the Mountaineers.

Bad Beats

-- The Owls of FAU had a 21-3 lead at one point, and it looked like they were going to handily cover a three-point line on the road. However, Middle Tennessee stormed back and outscored the Owls 22-3, including a touchdown and two-point conversion with :38 left in regulation to flip the cover from FAU to Middle Tennessee.

-- Western Kentucky was leading Marshall by a 17-13 score after a go-ahead TD at 6:50 left in regulation. The Thundering Herd posted the TD with 1:44 to go, taking a 20-17 lead to kill moneyline bettors of the Hilltoppers. For those laying three and the hook, the Herd didn't do nearly enough at the end.

-- For those holding 'under' (69) tickets, the lack of offense in the second half of ULL-Bama was nice. However, the Ragin' Cajuns scored a TD with 3:58 to go to not only send the total over, but also flip the side from a push at most shops to a non-cover for Bama.

-- In the UVA-NC State game, there was a total of 53. There were a couple of things that went wrong if you had an under ticket here. With :52 left in the first half, there were just 17 total points on the board. However, the Wolfpack scored 10 quick points in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead, suddenly putting the over on track. It was a defense battle again in the third and most of the fourth, but the Pack scored with 7:25 for a total of 49 points. Under bettors were still feeling pretty good, but then the Hoos moved the ball into the red zone and punched one in with 3:08 to go to push the total over.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 5
Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won?t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the fifth big college football weekend to close September. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Michigan State (-27) 31, Central Michigan 20:
The Spartans didn?t appear likely to cover trailing 3-0 until four minutes into the second quarter but Michigan State managed to flip the game to hold a 17-3 edge at the half and slipped past the spread momentarily with a 31-3 edge through three quarters. Central Michigan put up 17 points in the fourth to seal the underdog cover in an oddly uneven game with Central Michigan winning the first and fourth quarter 20-0 but outscored in the middle two quarters 31-0.

Northern Illinois (+3.5) 26, Eastern Michigan 23:
After falling behind 10-0 early Northern Illinois dominated this game holding Eastern Michigan to negative net yards over nine consecutive possessions. The Huskies only led 13-10 in the fourth quarter and benefited from a missed field goal from the Eagles with about six minutes remaining. The Huskies weren?t quite able to run out the remaining clock and in the final two minutes Eastern Michigan managed to get back into field goal range and successfully forced overtime. Both teams scored with relative ease in the first overtime in the second session NIU was poised to score quickly again but fumbled at the four-yard-line. Eastern Michigan played it safe and set-up a 38-yard kick that was missed. In the third overtime Chad Ryland redeemed himself with a 42-yard field goal as the Eagles took the lead but the Huskies converted two big 3rd downs and got into the end zone for six and the minor MAC upset.

Indiana (-14?) 24, Rutgers 17:
The Hoosiers led 24-7 at halftime at Rutgers but wound up unable to score in the second half with a pair of punts and a pair of turnovers in Rutgers territory. After an early fourth quarter fumble from Indiana Rutgers drove for a touchdown a few plays later to get within the spread. The Knights added a field goal after a Peyton Ramsey interception for a touchback but the Knights never got the ball back with a chance to tie down by only seven.

Washington State (+1) 28, Utah 24:
After a high scoring 21-21 first half Utah got an early field goal in the third quarter and that appeared like it would be enough with an exchange of six straight punts with the Utes controlling the ground game with a 204-0 rushing edge in this Pac-12 affair. The Cougars got the big play it needed with an 89-yard touchdown pass through a pair of missed tackles with four minutes remaining to take the lead. Utah appeared poised to answer with a 36-yard gain on a 4th-and-10 play just across midfield, reaching the 7-yard-line with enough time to work with but the play was wiped out with a holding penalty and the Utes failed on the subsequent 4th-and-20 attempt.

Western Michigan (-3) 40, Miami, OH 39:
The Redhawks led by 13 at the half and still sat up by six heading into the fourth quarter but things got interesting in the final half of the fourth quarter. Western Michigan completed an 89-yard drive to take a 34-33 lead but it took less than a minute for Miami to answer going up by five and opting to go for two and failing. Western Michigan would put together another long scoring drive that featured a 4th-and-10 conversion and also opted to go for two in a critical play relative to the spread with the Broncos favored by -1? to -2? most of the week before closing at -3. That conversion attempt also failed and with nearly three minutes remaining Miami had a great opportunity to get back in front. The Redhawks converted a 3rd-and-21 play but then fell short on a 3rd-and-3 opportunity and opted for a 50-yard field goal attempt that was no good. The one-point loss was enough to hold on for a narrow home underdog cover for the Redhawks however.

Georgia Southern (+3) 28, Arkansas State 21:
The Sun Belt favorites trailed 7-3 at the half but managed to tie the game at 14-14 late in the third quarter and then at 21-21 with about five minutes remaining. Overtime looked certain as Georgia Southern faced 3rd down near midfield with fewer than 30 seconds remaining but Wesley Kennedy broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run for the upset.

Alabama (-48) 56, UL-Lafayette 14:
Alabama had a 28-0 lead not even 13 minutes into this game and eclipsed the massive spread by halftime. A 94-yard pass play with reserves in the game put Alabama up 56-0 late in the third quarter but the Ragin? Cajuns scored twice in the fourth quarter to take the backdoor cover.

Texas (-8?) 19, Kansas State 14:
Texas led 19-0 at halftime with the help of a 90-yard punt return touchdown. Kansas State managed to score on its opening possession out of halftime and then watched Texas miss a field goal late in the third quarter. It took 16 plays and two 4th down conversions but Kansas State went 70 yards for another touchdown to get within the underdog spread early in the fourth quarter. Texas wasn?t able to add points but they forced a 3-and-out on the last Kansas State possession and ended the game taking a knee at the Kansas State 20-yard-line.

Oklahoma State (-17) 48, Kansas 28:
The Jayhawks trailed by 20 through three quarters but made a late charge with two touchdown drives in the final frame. Oklahoma State ultimately answered each time including a spread-saving touchdown with 2:38 remaining. On its final possession Kansas wound up losing five yards in four plays as they weren?t a threat to steal the underdog cover back late.

Middle Tennessee State (+3) 25, Florida Atlantic 24:
The Owls led 24-10 late in the third quarter but a 19-yard punt handed the Blue Raiders good field position and Middle Tennessee State scored three plays later to take just a seven-point deficit into the fourth quarter. Florida Atlantic opted to go for it on a 4th down play just short of the 50 and came up short to shift the field position and after a pair of punts Middle Tennessee State had the ball back just inside FAU territory with almost four minutes remaining. With a 4th down conversion with about two minutes to go Middle Tennessee State faced 4th-and-goal in the final minute and delivered a rushing touchdown. Down one the Blue Raiders went for the win and got the two-point conversion to shake up the early Conference USA race and send Lane Kiffin and the Owls to 0-5 ATS.

Arizona State (-22) 52, Oregon State 24:
The Sun Devils had just a 14-point lead well into the fourth quarter before scoring two touchdowns in the final 10 minutes. The first score came after Oregon State failed to score despite reaching the 1-yard-line and the second touchdown came after the Beavers again failed on 4th down in Arizona State territory. Oregon State fumbled near midfield on its final possession when a touchdown would have still flipped the spread result.

USC (-3?) 24, Arizona 20:
USC led 24-0 into the third quarter before Arizona finally got on the scoreboard. Down 24-7 into the fourth quarter Arizona took advantage of a USC fumble, scoring on the next play to trail by only 10 with about 10 minutes remaining. USC again fumbled on the next possession but Arizona failed going for it on 4th-and-long past midfield with about six minutes to go. The Trojans opted to also try to pick a up a first down just outside field goal range with about four minutes remaining but came up short leaving the Wildcats in position for a potential backdoor cover. Arizona quickly reached the red zone with a pair of penalties helping the cause and had 1st-and-goal at the 1 to seemingly be in position to deliver a miracle for those on the underdog. It took until 4th down but Arizona did get a touchdown in the final two minutes but incredibly missed the extra-point, as most USC backers escaped holding on to the road favorite cover by a half point.
