Top 25 Notes

-- The best game of the day took place in Eugene, as Stanford and Oregon played a classic. The Ducks built a 24-7 lead at halftime, but the second half was all Cardinal. Oregon had the ball in the red zone late in the third quarter, trying to make it 31-7. Instead, Joey Alfieri scooped up a fumble and returned it 80 yards for a momentum-changing TD, slicing Oregon's lead to 24-14. Another quick TD near the end of the third made it 24-21. Ducks' moneyline bettors knew it was coming, as the Cardinals posted a field goal at :00 in regulation to force OT. That was also good for a bad beat on the total (see below). The Cardinal finished off the overtime with a TD, winning 38-31 for a miracle cover, too.

-- Ohio State got Urban Meyer back on the sidelines after his three-game suspension, and it was like he never left. They whipped up on Tulane, 49-6. The Buckeyes moved to 3-1 ATS, including 3-0 ATS at the Horseshoe. The most notable part of this game might have been a bad beat involving the total. Again, see below.

-- Virginia Tech rolled into the Hampton Roads looking to squash winless Old Dominion, a side which entered 0-3 SU/ATS. The Hokies tied the game late, making it 35-35, but the Monarchs picked up a pair of touchdowns late to spring the huge upset, the first win over a Power 5 team in school history.

-- West Virginia had two weeks off to prepare for Kansas State after having last week's road trip to N.C. State canceled due to Hurricane Florence. They looked rested, as they humbled K-State by a 35-6 score in Morgantown. The Mountaineers improved to 3-0 SU/ATS.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- North Carolina surprised Pittsburgh 38-35 in Chapel Hill, as the two-week break from Hurricane Florence did them some good. The Panthers slipped to 2-2 SU/1-3 ATS. ... Virginia posted an impressive 27-3 win at home against Louisville, improving to 3-1 SU/4-0 ATS. ... N.C. State took care of Marshall by a 37-20 count, covering a six-point number on the road. The Wolfpack are now 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS, and they were another team looking well prepared after a week off thanks to the hurricane.

-- Michigan roughed up Nebraska 56-10 in the Big House, dropping the Cornhuskers to 0-3 for the first time since 1945. The honeymoon might be over for Scott Frost at his alma mater. As far as the Wolverines are concerned, they're now 3-0/2-1 ATS in their three games since being dropped by Notre Dame in their opener. ... Meanwhile, Michigan State cooled off Indiana at 'The Rock' by a 35-21 score, covering for the first time in three games this season. ... For anyone expecting Rutgers to be better this season...nah. Tgey were roughed up by Buffalo 42-13, falling to 0-3 SU/ATS over the past three.

-- Iowa State handed Akron its first loss of the season, 26-13. However, the Zips were able to cover a 19 1/2-point number, moving to 2-0 ATS in their two games against FBS schools. The Cyclones slipped to 1-2 ATS in their three games to date. ... TCU dropped their second straight outing, falling to Texas for the first time in four years. The 'Horns have won three in a row, and covered each of their past two, both at home. ... It was exactly 11 years to the day since Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy's "I'm a man...I'm 40" rant, and the opponent that day was Texas Tech. The two sides played again, and the Red Raiders were able to come away with a much-needed 41-17 win in Stillwater, winning and covering for the third straight after getting whipped in their opener.

-- Washington held off a spirited charge from Arizona State, winning 27-20. The Sun Devils easily covered the 18-point number, moving to 9-0 ATS in their past nine trips to Seattle and 16-2-2 ATS in the past 20 meetings in this series overall. ... On Friday night it was USC earning a feel-good win at home against Washington State, 39-36, although the Cougars were able to hang on for the cover. While the Trojans squared their record at 2-2 SU, they slipped to 0-4 ATS.

-- Tennessee was horrific in their rivalry game against Florida, falling in front of the restless natives at Neyland Stadium by a 47-21 count as the Gators were able to take care of the 'over' (46.5) themselves. ... Auburn showed why they were favorites by 29 1/2 over Arkansas, as the Razorbacks really are that bad. The Hogs have dropped three in a row, slipping to 1-3 SU/0-3-1 ATS. The 'under' has also cashed in three in a row for Arkansas. ... Kentucky picked up a 28-7 win against No. 14 Mississippi State, improving to 4-0 SU/2-2 ATS. The Wildcats have scored 27 or more points in all four games this season. Might Kentucky football be headed for a ranking for the first time since 2007?

Mid-Major Report

-- UCF beat down visiting Florida Atlantic on Friday by a 56-36 score, easily covering by pulling away in the second half. The Owls slipped to 2-2 SU and 0-4 ATS so far. ... Connecticut was tripped up 51-21 in Syracuse, dropping the Huskies to 1-3 SU/0-3-1 ATS. The 'under' result against the Orange was the first of the season for UConn after three straight overs. ... East Carolina picked up its second consecutive cover, playing South Florida tough in a 20-13 loss in Tampa.

-- Louisiana Tech gave LSU all they could handle, slicing the lead of the Tigers to 24-21 in the fourth quarter before the home team pulled away to win by 17. The Bulldogs have now hit the 'over' in each of their three games this season. ... Western Kentucky surprised Ball State by a 28-20 score for their first win of the season. They improved to 3-1 ATS, however, with the 'under' also 3-1 through four outings. ... Florida International slipped to 2-2 SU with a loss at Miami-Florida, but the Golden Panthers improved to 4-0 ATS.

-- Eastern Michigan played their hearts out, but they fell at San Diego State in overtime by a 23-20 count. The Eagles improved to 3-1 ATS, however. ... For Ball State, while they lost, they have been helpful at the betting window to total bettors. The 'under' is now 4-0. ... Speaking of totals, Ohio has hit the 'over' in all three of their contests so far.

-- Utah State rolled past Air Force 42-32 to improve to 4-0 ATS overall on the season. The 'over' is also 4-0 for the Aggies. ... Colorado State continues to baffle, as they fell at home to FCS Illinois State to slip to 1-4 SU/ATS. The 'under' is also 4-1 overall for the Rams. ... The Aztecs squeaked out the win over EMU in overtime, but they slipped to 1-3 ATS overall on the season. The 'under' is also 3-1 for San Diego State so far.

-- Appalachian State has posted a perfect 3-0 ATS mark so far through three outings. ... South Alabama took it on the chin to slip to 1-3 SU/2-1-1 ATS. The Jaguars have been a favorite for total bettors, however, as the 'over' is now a perfect 4-0 for USA. ... Troy hung on for a 35-27 victory at Louisiana-Monroe, earning the road cover. The Trojans led 35-7 at halftime, but gave side bettors a little heart failure by getting outscored 20-0 in the second half.

Bad Beats

-- The Buckeyes were winning 43-7 in the fourth quarter, failing to cover a 36 1/2-point number. They turned it over on downs deep in Green Wave territory midway through the final quarter, and it appeared favorite bettors were going to lose. However it was Tulane bettors taking it in the shorts, as the Buckeyes scored with 1:01 remaining to flip the line in favor of the favorites.

-- Oregon side bettors and moneyline bettors were feeling good about themselves for a good chunk of regulation. Stanford stormed back and forced OT, booting a field goal with :00 left in regulation. That changed the total from a push (59) to an over. Then the Cardinal scored a TD in the extra session for the miracle cover.

-- Cincinnati fell behind 21-0 against Ohio, and moneyline bettors for the Bobcats were feeling good. However, the Bearcats took their first lead with 3:24 to go in regulation to dash the dreams of ML bettors for OU.

-- Miami (Ohio)-Bowling Green had a total of (54.5), and the Falcons scored a TD with 5:34 to go to cut the Redhawks' lead to 31-10. 'Under' bettors appeared to be in good shape still, but BSU scored again with 4:13 to go, then Miami scored with :34 left to push it over. With no time left in regulation, the Falcons added a TD for good measure, scoring 27 points total in the final 5:34.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 4
September 23, 2018
By Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won?t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the fourth big college football weekend. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Penn State (-27) 63, Illinois 24: Illinois led 24-21 in the second half looking safe as a nearly four-touchdown home underdog Friday night. The Lions wound score 42 unanswered points including two touchdowns to earn the favorite cover in the final five minutes of the game for an improbable cover and another misleading final score in a Penn State game this season. Penn State has now scored 91 points after the start of the fourth quarter in four games this season.

Western Kentucky (+3) 28, Ball State 20: For a second straight season, Ball State had a cruel finish in this matchup as they lost a lead in the final two minutes last season and led 20-14 with five minutes to go on Saturday. Western Kentucky put together two touchdown drives in-between a Cardinals punt to win by eight as a slight underdog on the road, led by Steven Duncan who replaced Davis Shanley at quarterback.

Syracuse (-30) 51, Connecticut 21: This spread opened at -27? and climbed all the was to -31 before settling back at -30. The favorite cover didn?t look likely with a 31-14 halftime edge but Syracuse got a punt return touchdown in the third quarter and approached the spread with a 41-14 advantage through three quarters. Connecticut struck for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to close to within 20, but Syracuse answered quickly and then added a field goal following a fumble to lead by exactly 30. The Huskies looked like a great threat to get back within the number reaching the Syracuse 16-yard-line, but an interception near the end zone ended a late threat and a push was the closing line result.

Miami, FL (-25?) 31, Florida International 17: The Hurricanes dominated this game and led 24-0 at halftime with FIU held to only 25 yards. The Hurricanes got past the spread with a 31-0 lead in the third quarter but an interception from N?Kosi Perry halted the momentum, with Perry inserted into the game early relieving Malik Rosier. The Hurricanes got the ball back quickly and reached the red zone early in the fourth quarter, but Perry took a sack with Miami going for it on 4th-and-goal. Perhaps offended by that decision the Panthers had a spark, going 85 yards for their first score of the game with a touchdown near the seven-minute mark that was enough to shift the spread result. FIU snagged a fumble a few plays later to add a field goal and then posted another touchdown after an on-side kick recovery for a very misleading 14-point final margin.

Florida State (-10) 37, Northern Illinois 19: The spread on this game jumped around significantly hitting -12 on Friday before dipping as low as -9? briefly, settling at -10. That was the exact margin heading into the fourth quarter after Seminoles connected on a 78-yard pass play. The Huskies didn?t take long to answer but for the second straight time failed on a two-point conversion, trailing by 11. Those that had the Huskies weren?t necessarily deserving of a win as NIU was +4 in turnovers and soundly out-gained but the Huskies took a late sack going for it on 4th-and-long from their own 35. With 12 seconds remaining Florida State rushed in for a touchdown to pad the final margin and make it a clear Seminoles win and cover.

Ohio State (-38) 49, Tulane 6: The Buckeyes led 42-6 at the half, well on their way but not quite past the massive home favorite spread in Urban Meyer?s return. A scoreless third quarter featured five consecutive punts before Ohio State failed going for it on a 4th-and-2 play but Tulane likewise failed going for it on its own fourth down in Ohio State territory a few minutes later. With just over a minute on the clock, Ohio State broke the scoring drought with a favorite cover saving touchdown for a 43-point win.

Toledo (-11?) 63, Nevada 44: Scoring on a blocked punt return and a kickoff return, Toledo led most of the way but Nevada didn?t go away, cutting the margin to four points in the third quarter. Toledo scored late in the third to lead by 11 and then extended that lead to 56-38 early in the fourth. Nevada would answer but failed going for two to leave the margin at 12 for a big distinction but it didn?t matter as Mitchell Guadagni broke a 34-yard touchdown scamper a few plays later for a 19-point edge. Nevada was intercepted and then stopped on downs near midfield in two late possessions to fall short of the spread.

SMU (+6) 31, Navy 30:
SMU led 23-14 early in the fourth quarter taking advantage of a short field after a fumble. The extra-point was blocked and was returned the other way however as Navy was back within seven. Navy tied the game with about six minutes remaining and overtime was needed. Navy went first and did what it needed to do over nine plays to get seven points, sitting past the road favorite spread momentarily. SMU took seven plays to answer including a fourth down conversion. Sonny Dykes rolled the dice and went for two and it worked for the upset, with those on the home underdog cheering the decision to avoid a second overtime session.

Georgia (-14) 43, Missouri 29: The Bulldogs scored on a fumble return and a blocked punt return in the first half and didn?t have an offensive touchdown until the third quarter, leading 27-7. Missouri was productive in this game and was within 11 by the start of the fourth quarter. Both teams scored touchdowns early in the fourth before Missouri missed a field goal. Missouri failed on downs in its own territory with about five minutes remaining and the next attempt for a field goal was good for Georgia for a 14-point final margin, even with the common spread though the highly ranked Bulldogs were priced at -14? at times.

Stanford (-3?) 38, Oregon 31: Oregon was in complete control with a 24-7 halftime edge and briefly appeared to go up 30-7 late in the third quarter before a controversial replay overturn. Oregon still had 1st-and-goal at the 1, but fumbled and lost nine yards and two plays later a high snap was returned 80 yards for a Stanford touchdown. The Cardinal cut the margin to three just ahead of the end of the quarter and had the ball down to the Oregon 30-yard-line early in the fourth quarter, failing going for it on 4th-and-1. Oregon delivered on a 4th-and-1 of its own with about five minutes remaining and got a touchdown on the next play to lead by 10. Stanford answered with a three-play touchdown drive and Oregon looked capable of running out most of the clock with a new set of downs and 1:35 remaining with Stanford down to one timeout. Instead the Ducks fumbled reaching for a game-sealing 1st down on a second down run in the final minute and Stanford managed to get a tying field goal as time expired. In overtime, the Cardinal got a deflected pass touchdown while Oregon wound up intercepted on 4th-and-goal for a stunning turn of events with Stanford getting the road favorite cover despite not leading at any point in regulation.

Auburn (-29?) 34, Arkansas 3: This wasn?t quite the SEC blowout that the final score and narrow cover for Auburn might suggest as Auburn finished with just 225 total yards in the game, but was consistently in great field position thanks to turnovers and special teams success. Auburn led by 24-3 heading into the fourth quarter despite only 161 yards of offense. The Tigers added 10 points in the final nine minutes of the game including a late field goal that narrowly earned the favorite cover.

Troy (-4) 35, UL-Monroe 27: The Trojans had a 35-7 halftime edge but things got tight late as the Warhawks scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to climb within eight. After punting on its first four second half possessions, Troy managed to get in field goal range but missed as UL-Monroe had the ball back with just over two minutes remaining. The Warhawks reached the 11-yard line with a new set of downs and still nearly a minute remaining but an interception ended the comeback bid.

North Texas (-11?) 47, Liberty 7: This game featured a rather misleading final score as Liberty had a new set of downs near midfield down 21-7 well into the third quarter before a lengthy lightning delay. It was a different game after the break as Liberty missed a field goal on that promising drive and then saw North Texas add four late touchdowns to win by 40 despite relatively close production numbers.

Alabama (-23?) 45, Texas A&M 23: Alabama was tested a bit in this game but still led by 29 heading into the fourth quarter. Halfway through the final frame the Aggies spoiled the favorite cover with an 88-yard touchdown drive that would conclude the scoring in the game.

Wisconsin (-3) 28, Iowa 17: Iowa had control of this game most of the way but caught a tough break with the foot of a blocking Iowa player contacting the ball on a punt leading to a short Wisconsin touchdown. The Hawkeyes answered to lead by three through a series of punts before Wisconsin completed an 88-yard drive to take the lead inside the final minute, slipping just past the spread 21-17. Iowa was intercepted on a deflected pass on its last effort and with 22 seconds remaining the Badgers broke a run for another score to make for a misleading final result, pushing the low total just ?over? in the process as well.

New Mexico State (-5?) 27, UTEP 20:
The winless Aggies got two big breaks with a blocked punt return and a fumble return touchdown yet still led by just four late in the fourth quarter. With just over three minutes remaining a 22-yard field goal sealed the narrow road favorite cover in this ugly battle out west.

Utah State (-9?) 42, Air Force 32: The Aggies took control in the middle of this game with four consecutive touchdowns surrounding halftime, leading 35-14 before Air Force came up with a late third quarter field goal. The Falcons made it a game with a pair of touchdowns in 13 seconds of game clock, the second of which came on a fumble return. Up three Utah State got a late 70 yard run from Gerold Bright to put the margin at 10, right near the number which reached -11 but dropped in the hours before kickoff of this late night Mountain West game. The Falcons were in position to make the pricing a moot point reaching the Utah State 16-yard-line late in the game before failing on downs.

STAT WATCH: OU linebacker sets FBS record with 28 tackles
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

Kenneth Murray went into Oklahoma's game against Army with the goal of breaking the school record for tackles. The sophomore linebacker ended up setting the Football Bowl Subdivision mark.

Murray made 28 stops in the Sooners' 28-21 overtime win over the Black Knights on Saturday. That broke the record shared by three players.

Curtis Bolton, Murray's buddy and fellow OU linebacker, finished with a career-high 23 tackles.

Both had plenty of opportunities against a triple-option offense designed to dominate time of possession. Army held the ball for 44 minutes, 41 seconds and got off 87 offensive plays to the Sooners' 40.

Murray made a then-career-high 10 tackles against Iowa State on Sept. 15 before setting his sights on the OU record of 24 tackles by linebacker Carl McAdams against Navy in 1965.

''I told probably 10 of my teammates that I was going to break it this week,'' Murray said. ''I told them, I was praying to God about it. Me and Buzzy (Curtis Bolton) are always competing, trying to see who's going to make the most plays.''

200 CLUB

Arizona's J.J. Taylor ran for a national season-high 284 yards on 27 carries against Oregon State. The only other 200-yard game over the weekend was by Penn State's Miles Sanders, who went for 200 on 22 runs against Illinois.

There have been 12 200-yard performances this season.

CATCHING ON

Dillon Mitchell of Oregon and Kaleb Fossum of Nevada matched the national season high for receptions with 14 apiece.

Mitchell was targeted 17 times, and he amassed 239 yards on his 14 catches against Stanford, the most by a Pac-12 player since Washington State's Vince Mayle had 252 yards against Arizona State in 2014. Fossum amassed a career-high 150 yards on his 14 receptions.

SACK 'EM UP

Central Michigan defensive lineman Mike Danna had his first four sacks of the season against Maine to match the national season high. Boston College's Wyatt Ray also had a four-sack game, against Wake Forest on Sept. 13.

New Mexico State had eight sacks against UTEP, second most in the Bowl Subdivision this season.

RUN, RUN, RUN

Air Force set the national season high for rushes when it ran on 86 of its 107 plays against Utah State. It was the most since the Falcons ran 91 times against Nevada last season.

Army and Navy each ran 78 times in their games, tying for second most this season.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Ten of Alabama's 34 scoring drives have lasted less than a minute, with nine of them resulting in touchdowns.

College Rewind - Week 4
September 24, 2018

By Kyle Markus

NCAA Football - Week 4 Betting Recap

The college football season is in full swing, and Week 4 of course had its fair share of favorites covering, underdogs covering as well as upsets on the moneyline. NCAA football can be an unpredictable sport with teams that look overmanned finding a way to come away with victories. Here is a look at some of the more notable results from this past week of games.

One of the craziest games of the week was the matchup between the Oregon Ducks and Stanford Cardinal. Oregon was leading the entire game and seemed to have the game in hand with under a minute remaining. However, a fumble gave Stanford new life and the Cardinal forced overtime. Stanford came away with a 38-31 win to get the unlikely cover. The Cardinal was -3 and didn?t deserve to cover but it happened.

Kentucky keeps on coming away with wins in game which the oddsmakers at BookMaker.eu don?t think much of its chances. The Wildcats cruised past Mississippi State in their most recent game by a score of 28-7 and after a hot start to the season they might start seeing some respect from the oddsmakers.

The Alabama Crimson Tide was a huge home favorite against Texas A&M even though the Aggies came in nationally ranked. Alabama was in control throughout the second half but Texas A&M was able to slip out of there with a cover as 24.5-point underdogs with a 45-23 loss.

The Oklahoma Sooners seemed to have an easy game lined up against Army, but Army hung around the entire way. Oklahoma almost suffered a really bad loss but was able to escape with a 28-21 win. Needless to say, it was an easy cover for Army.

An overtime game helped the ?over? hit in the matchup between SMU and Navy. There were only 46 points through regulation and the total was set at 58 points, but both teams scored touchdowns in the extra sessions and SMU scored a two-point conversion for a 31-30 win and for the ?over? to come away with the unlikely win.

Virginia Tech was a strong favorite against Old Dominion but this might have been the most surprising result of the week. Old Dominion didn?t just cover but came away with the 49-35 victory behind a standout performance from little-known quarterback Blake LaRussa. That was a huge payoff on the moneyline if anyone dared bet it.

The Hokies were ranked heading into that matchup and Oklahoma State was also ranked and the favorite heading into its Saturday game against Texas Tech. The competition was tougher so it wasn?t exactly the equivalent to losing to Old Dominion, but the Cowboys still took one on the chin in a 41-17 loss. Texas Tech covered and was another good choice on the moneyline by pulling the upset.

Wisconsin was a three-point favorite against Iowa and needed a strong fourth quarter but was able to cover with a 28-17 final in live betting.

One of the most accurate spreads in Week 4 was the one the oddsmakers pegged for the Georgia matchup against Missouri. The Bulldogs were listed as 14.5-point favorites and ended up capturing a 43-29 victory as the Tigers eked out the cover.

Overall, the ranked teams did a pretty nice job covering the spread this week, which isn?t always easy because they usually have to give so many points. One team that was unable to was the Washington Huskies, who only beat Arizona State by a touchdown at home when the spread pegged them the 17-point favorite.

We will do it all once again next week. Look for the results within the results. For instance, Oregon?s late-game collapse isn?t predictive and bettors should feel good about the Ducks? chances moving forward. The spreads for Week 5 will be out soon in college football gambling.

Games to Watch - Week 5
September 24, 2018
By YouWager.eu

College Football Week 5: Games to Watch

The first month of the college football season is officially now in the books and we have already seen a number of surprises.

Outside of the top 4, it seems as though the rest of the Top 25 is in a constant state of flux. Chances are we will see some changes again after the Week 5 games are played, especially since we are going to see a lot of ranked teams go head to head this coming weekend.

There are a lot of great games to choose from in the Week 5 college football schedule, but we have narrowed it down to four games that we consider to be must watch.

Let?s get right to the action, with predictions for each of the games, as well, all odds, props and futures for each game sponsored by YouWager.eu.

Oregon Ducks at California Golden Bears

One of the biggest questions waiting to be answered this week is how the Oregon Ducks are going to bounce back after gassing a huge lead to Stanford in Week 4. They are now behind the 8-ball in PAC-12 play, but they need to get right back on the horse with another conference game this Saturday, with this one being a road trip to face the undefeated California Golden Bears. It?s more than fair to suggest that another loss here for the Ducks would all but end their chances of becoming the PAC-12 champions, so all the pressure is on them heading into this huge game.

West Virginia Mountaineers at Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Mountaineers shook off some rust after missing a week due to weather and came out with another win in Week 4. The offense there is really starting to click now, and it looks as though the defense is starting to play at a higher level than usual. The Mountaineers D is going to need to be at its very best tis weekend when they go on the road to face the explosive Texas Tech Red Raiders who come into this one on the heels of a massive win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. These are two very good offensive outfits here, so it may come down to whichever defense rises up this Saturday.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Penn State Nittany Lions

There are no two ways about it, this is the biggest game on the Week 5 college football schedule. Both teams are coming into this one with an unbeaten record, with the winner of this game instantly taking control of the Big Ten East Division. The Buckeyes made a smooth transition with the return of coach Urban Meyer to the sidelines in Week 4, while Penn State laid down another big win over the weekend. These two teams are on fire right now, but something is going to have to give this coming Saturday. We are sure that this game is going to get a ton of betting money between now and kick-off.

Stanford Cardinal at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

If the Ohio State/Penn State game is the headliner in Week 5, then this one might well fall into the co-headliner category. This is another one that is going to have a huge impact on the playoff hopes of both teams after all is said and done. The Cardinal are sure to be riding a real high after an improbable comeback against the Oregon Ducks in Week 4, while the Irish finally came away with a comfortable in after opening the season with a trio of close victories. The Irish might have the home field advantage here, but don?t count out this very good Cardinal team.

Freshman Lawrence named Clemson QB
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Freshman Trevor Lawrence is the new starting quarterback for third-ranked Clemson, replacing senior Kelly Bryant. - for now.

The move doesn't mean Bryant is being benched, or won't regain the starting spot. Though Clemson coach Dabo Swinney isn't saying much about the change.

The team announced the decision Monday, a day after Swinney cut off potential quarterback questions on a teleconference Sunday night.

''I won't get into any rotation or depth chart moves tonight,'' the coach said.

But actions often speak louder than words.

On Monday morning the team put out a simple statement saying that Lawrence will start for the Tigers (4-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) against Syracuse (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday.

Lawrence's improvement and production, particularly in last week's 49-21 victory at Georgia Tech, could not be ignored, according to Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

''It just came down to, you've got to reward productivity,'' Elliott said. ''If you look at (Lawrence's) opportunities, he's taken advantage of them. Kelly didn't do anything wrong.''

Elliott cautioned that Lawrence's elevation is just for this week and the competition with Bryant for playing time will continue.

''Kelly has done a lot for this team,'' Elliott said. ''Again, this is just this week.''

The 6-foot-6 Lawrence was the country's top quarterback prospect this past year. He enrolled in January, went through spring drills and competed with Bryant throughout the offseason for the starting spot.

Bryant came out on top to start the season, though, as Lawrence played all four games as the second QB in in Clemson's two-player rotation.

But Lawrence has been the most effective of the two since the season started.

He completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and a career-high four touchdown throws to rally the Tigers offense after a slow start with Bryant behind center.

Lawrence led Clemson on four TD drives in a five-series span in the second and third quarters as the team took control of the Yellow Jackets. He was named the ACC's rookie of the week.

Statistically, Lawrence has outplayed Bryant.

Lawrence has completed 39 of 60 passes for 600 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Bryant has thrown for 461 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in four games.

Bryant was in the unenviable spot last year of having to follow Clemson's national championship winning quarterback in Deshaun Watson as the starter.

However, Bryant rose to the challenge and helped Clemson to a 12-2 mark and a third consecutive ACC championship and College Football Playoff appearance. The Tigers lone loss in the regular season at Syracuse in 2017 came in part when Bryant was knocked out of the game with a concussion in the second quarter.

When the Tigers' offense struggled in the CFP semifinals against eventual national champ Alabama in a 24-6 loss, many outside the program latched onto Lawrence as the program's future.

The offense - and especially Clemson's long-ball game - has been much crisper with Lawrence in the game. Six of Lawrence's nine touchdown throws have gone for 15 yards or longer.

Center Justin Falcinelli said Bryant is an experienced player who won't let this keep him down.

''Kelly will take it fine. He knows how we do things,'' Falcinelli said. ''He knows what to expect.''

Still, it appears Lawrence is on a similar path as Watson, who began his freshman season as backup but became the starter by game four.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers learned of Clemson's quarterback change when he spoke to the media Monday.

Lawrence ''seems like he's a very polished thrower. Obviously, he's young,'' Babers said. ''It'll be interesting to see how he does.''

Dan Mullen ready for return to Miss State
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Dan Mullen will forever be tied to Starkville, Mississippi.

It's where he landed his first head coaching job. It's where his two children were born. It's the place he called home for nearly a decade.

It's ''StarkVegas'' to Mullen, and he takes a lot of pride in everything he did to help get the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs to where they are today. Packed stadiums. Legal cowbells. ''Don't Stop Believin''' played before the fourth quarter of games.

Mullen had a hand in all of it.

Now, he's going to experience it from a different angle: the opposing sideline.

Mullen will return to Starkville this weekend with Florida (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference), a rare occurrence where a head coach faces his former team on the road in his first season. Houston Nutt is believed to be the last to do it, taking Mississippi to Arkansas in 2008 and winning 23-21. Tom O'Brien did it the previous year, taking North Carolina State to Boston College and losing 37-17.

Mullen expects ''a lot of passion'' from the Mississippi State faithful.

''When I think of the fans and I think of the former players and the people of the town of Starkville, I think for the most part they were appreciative in what we were able to accomplish in the nine years that we were there,'' Mullen said Monday. ''I don't know if that will show on Saturday night.''

Mullen went 69-46 in Starkville, leading the program to nine bowl appearances and the top spot in the Top 25 poll for five weeks in 2014.

He joked about the transition from Gainesville to Starkville prompting his wife, Megan, to do ''a lot of online shopping.'' He praised the locals for welcoming them, saying ''being a Yankee and all, they were very accepting of me right from the beginning. It helps when we won.''

He still has a home there, too, although it's in the process of being sold.

''It's closing one of these days,'' he quipped.

But Mullen also made it clear he didn't leave behind a lot of personal ties.

''If I had time off, I'm going to go on vacation with my family,'' he said. ''There are probably very few days in nine years I was in Starkville, Mississippi, that I didn't go to the office. If I was in town, I went to work. I don't want to make it (sound) bad. ... When you had time to go out and be social, it was fantastic. But usually I was at work a lot.''

The majority of Mississippi State's roster consists of guys Mullen recruited, including star quarterback Nick Fitzgerald and preseason All-American defensive linemen Jeffery Simmons and Montez Sweat.

It could be an advantage for the Gators, who will play in Starkville for the first time since 2009.

''That's definitely a part of it,'' Bulldogs coach Joe Moorhead said. ''Hopefully we know as much about our personnel as they know about our personnel. Like anything, you've got to maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses.

''Obviously, them being around these guys for four years, three years, two years or one year, they'll have a very specific knowledge of what our players can do and can't do.''

It also might favor the Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1), who should have an idea how to attack Mullen's offense and Todd Grantham's defense.

''We've tried to change a lot of terminology, of signals, of all kinds of different stuff because the players know a lot of the different things that we do,'' Mullen said. ''But unfortunately they're going to have comfort against the scheme because that defense has gone against our offense, their offense has gone against our defense.

''So there's going to be some comfort with them against the scheme in which we run.''

Mullen should be fairly comfortable during the quick trip back, even though Florida is staying at a different hotel than Mississippi State did during Mullen's tenure.

Little, if anything, has changed in the nine months since Mullen left. And he even has one built-in advantage.

''I've heard they flipped the locker rooms, so I'll be in the same locker I was in for nine years,'' he said. ''That will be a comfortable feeling for me. ... But it'll be fun. I'm looking forward to it.''

Quote of the Day
?We got a long way to go to get to Golden State. They can pick up right where they left off, starting with training camp. ? We are picking up from scratch, so we got a long way to go. We can?t worry about what Golden State is doing. ? They?ve been together for a few years now.?

Tuesday?s quiz
Who did the Buccaneers beat when they won their only Super Bowl title?

Monday?s quiz
Other than Josh Rosen, Troy Aikman was the only other UCLA quarterback taken in the top 10 picks of an NFL Draft.

Sunday?s quiz
NBA?s Washington Wizards were known as the ?Bullets? before switching their nickname to the Wizards.

***************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Someone in Las Vegas Saturday bet $5,000 on the Cleveland Browns to win the AFC at 50-1; they win one game in 635 days and a guy is dropping five grand on them to get to the Super Bowl.

Someone else risked $9,000 to win $450 ($450!!!!) on the Vikings Sunday; all they had to do was beat the 17-point dog underdog Buffalo Bills.

Gambling and winning is difficult.

12) Then again, a gambler at Buffalo Bill?s casino in Primm, NV hit a $25, 8-team parlay Saturday, using eight ?under? bets on college football totals. Winning wager was worth $4,500.

11) There are bitter losses, then there is Oregon?s home loss to Stanford Saturday night.

? Ducks led 24-7 at halftime.
? Oregon had ball in Stanford territory up 24-7 in 3rd quarter; Stanford?s defense picks up an Oregon fumble and runs 80 yards for a TD.
? Ducks had ball in Stanford territory in last minute, appeared to have first down that would have ended game, but runner fumbled, Cardinal recovered and they tied game with a FG.
? Stanford wins the game in OT.

10) Minnesota Twins have allowed 10 walk-off homers this year, an all-time record; they?ve had 15 walk-off losses, which is one short of the all-time record, held by five teams:

1924 Phillies
1943 St Louis Browns
1966 Red Sox
1969 Giants
1975 Houston Astros

9) Lookalikes, when they both have a hat on: Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt and Indians? manager Terry Francona.

8) Eli Manning makes roughly $200,000 a year (give-or-take $20K) to do a for short spot each week with Mike Francesa on WFAN in New York City during the football season. Thats a lot of cash to pay a guy for spewing cliches while failing to appear interested.

7) Sounds like the NBA?s Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a great start this season; the star player wants to be traded, the coach and the GM don?t want to trade him, but the owner does, so he orders the reluctant GM to engage in trade talks. Could be a long winter for the Wolves.

Minnesota also signed its other star, All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns to a 5-year, $190M super-maximum contract extension. Apparently the two stars didn?t get along well.

6) Things you don?t see in lot of places: After the A?s game Saturday night, 40 or so fans lined up on the third base line, the players/coaches took their jerseys off, signed them and gave them to the corresponding fan who won the contest to win that person?s jersey. Pretty cool promotion.

5) ESPN play-by-play guy Joe Tessitore is a little bit of a hype master; Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is off to a great start in his career, but you?re not ?a superstar? after four games.

4) If you?re counting New England out as a Super Bowl contender this year, remember that the Patriots were 1-3 in ?01 and won the Super Bowl; they were 2-2 in ?03 and won the Super Bowl, and were 2-2 in ?14 and won the Super Bowl.

That said, Miami is 3-0 and everyone else in the AFC East is 1-2. Dolphins are visiting Foxboro Sunday, and that suddenly becomes a much more important game.

3) With Jimmy Garoppolo done for this year, 49ers? coach Kyle Shanahan said he?s working out several FA QBs tomorrow; Tom Savage. Kellen Clemens. TJ Yates. Nick Mullens will be promoted from the practice squad. Matt Moore may also try out.

CJ Beathard is now the 49ers? starting QB.

2) Steelers 30, Buccaneers 27? Pittsburgh hung a 30-spot on the Bucs in the first half; Tampa Bay turned ball over four times before halftime. Hard to win that way.

Bucs stormed back in second half, but fell short; Ryan Fitzpatrick is first player in NFL history to throw for 400+ yards in three consecutive games.

1) Meanwhile, in St Pete, the Rays lost 4-1, which means the Oakland A?s are in the playoffs, and I really, really enjoyed typing this sentence. Later this week, I?ll have a lot more on this gritty, gutty team that has pulled off a baseball miracle this season.

Tickets for postseason games in Oakland go on sale Friday morning at 9am, PST

Injuries could provide test to Georgia
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Ben Cleveland and Andrew Thomas are two reasons the offensive line is considered one of No. 2 Georgia's deepest positions.

Injuries to the two could test that depth when Georgia (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) plays Tennessee (2-2, 0-1) on Saturday.

Coach Kirby Smart said Monday Cleveland, the starting right guard, is out indefinitely with a fractured left fibula suffered in last week's 43-29 win at Missouri . Thomas, the starting left tackle regarded as perhaps the unit's top player, left last week's game early after aggravating his sprained left ankle.

Thomas may play against the Volunteers.

Smart said Thomas ''was no worse off with the ankle'' and added he ''felt like he probably could have gone back in if he had to in an emergency'' against Missouri.

Cade Mays, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, replaced Thomas. Sophomore Justin Shaffer filled in for Cleveland.

If coaches are confident Thomas can play a full game this week, Mays could compete with Shaffer and Kendall Baker to start at right guard.

This could be a big week for Mays, whose father, Kevin Mays, was an All-SEC guard for Tennessee and offensive captain in 1994.

No matter the new starting five, the loss of Cleveland (6-6, 340) will be felt. The Bulldogs gained momentum for their SEC championship run last season when Cleveland became a starter .

Smart said Cleveland and right tackle Isaiah Wilson had developed good chemistry on the right side of the line.

''I thought that Ben Cleveland was playing really well,'' Smart said. ''He was playing fast. He was finally comfortable. He was moving around. ... He was very confident. You can kind of see the maturation process of the last two years of what all he's been through to get to the point he was. So you hate to see that injury, especially from a continuity part of him and Isaiah being there together.''

Quarterback Jake Fromm said senior center Lamont Galliard's leadership will be important.

''He gets guys all moving in the right direction,'' Fromm said. ''As long as they're doing that, we're in business.''

Galliard said Shaffer ''did very well'' after Cleveland was hurt.

''He showed no doubt on his face,'' Galliard said. ''Once he came in he was like `Let's go.' I'm proud of him and all the young guys who have come in ready to play.''

Tennessee has its own issues on the offensive line, which lost starting center Brandon Kennedy in the opening week of the season to an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will knock him out for the rest of the year.

Coach Jeremy Pruitt said Tennessee had ''by far'' its worst running game in last week in a 47-21 loss to Florida . Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano faced frequent pressure left the game in the third quarter after taking a hit to his left knee.

Tennessee offensive tackle Trey Smith said Guarantano ''got hit way too much. He was on the ground way too much. ... We've just got to do a better job doing our job.''

NOTES: WR Tyler Simmons (shoulder) could miss a week or two, according to Smart. Simmons started the first four games. ... LB Monty Rice (knee) is expected to play after missing last week's game. CB Tyson Campbell (shoulder, dehydration) also is expected to play.

V-Tech QB Jackson to have surgery
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson has a broken left fibula and will have surgery.

Coach Justin Fuente made the announcement Monday. The coach said the surgery will take place Tuesday, but gave no timetable for how long Jackson will be sidelined.

Jackson, in his second season as the starter, was injured in the third quarter of the Hokies' 49-35 loss at Old Dominion on Saturday night.

Redshirt junior Ryan Willis replaced him and was 9 for 18 for 131 yards with a touchdown pass. He also ran four times for 30 yards.

Jackson set Hokies freshmen records last season by throwing for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was 36 for 58 for 575 yards with five touchdowns and one interception when he got injured at the end of a 19-yard run. He was carted off the field and returned to the sideline later on crutches and with his leg in a protective boot.

Willis, a transfer, started eight games as a freshman and two as a sophomore at Kansas before transferring.

Syracuse turns its focus toward Clemson
September 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Dino Babers has never experienced this before in seven seasons as a head coach - his Syracuse Orange are undefeated after four games and received votes this week in the AP Top 25.

That's heady territory for a vagabond coach who's toiled for more than three decades at 14 different schools.

''We're excited for that, and it helps us with our goals that we're trying to achieve this season,'' Babers said. ''But just like I told the football team, we're going to take that 4-0 check and we're not going to cash it. We're going to put it in the bank and we've got to start again.

''If we keep having that attitude, when it's all said and done maybe we'll have enough saved up in the piggy bank to go buy something at the end of the season that we'd like.''

That would be a bowl game, something that's eluded the program through four straight losing seasons.

Syracuse matched its win total for each of the previous three seasons with a 51-21 victory over Connecticut on Saturday, and the Orange's up-tempo offense is humming, averaging almost 50 points.

Syracuse's other wins have come against Western Michigan (55-42), Wagner (62-10) and Florida State (30-7), which has top talent but is struggling under a first-year coach. WMU has since lost 49-3 to No. 14 Michigan. Wagner has been hammered by Montana State (47-24) and Sacred Heart (41-14) while the Seminoles are back at .500 after beating Northern Illinois.

The competition steps up to the top rung Saturday when the Orange play an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Memorial Stadium against No. 3 Clemson (4-0, 1-0 ACC). The Tigers are coming off another dominant performance, holding Georgia Tech's triple option to just 203 yards and notching 10 tackles for loss in a 49-21 victory on the road.

''You're playing a fantastic team at their place and all the advantages go to them,'' Babers said. ''We're going to go, and we're going to show up. We didn't do too well the last time we went down there, so we're going to have to see how much we've grown up.''

When Syracuse visited Death Valley two years ago, the Tigers knocked Orange quarterback Eric Dungey out of the game in the first quarter and won 54-0 .

Dungey helped return the favor last year, leading the Orange to a startling 27-24 upset of the second-ranked Tigers in the Carrier Dome, the signature moment of Babers' coaching career.

''Those guys, they just played way harder than us in that game,'' Clemson wideout Tee Higgins said Monday.

Dungey is operating at a high level in his final season. He leads the Orange in rushing (354 yards with four TDs) and has passed for 763 yards and nine scores with only one interception. Most important, the senior is avoiding big hits that caused injuries, forcing him to miss nine entire games and parts of others. He scored three touchdowns against UConn, and on three of his 16 carries he scooted out of bounds at the last second.

The Orange defense is also doing its job. Syracuse is tied for second nationally with seven interceptions, tied for fifth with No. 1 Alabama and Colorado in red-zone defense (five TDs and a field goal allowed in 10 chances) and tied for 12th with 13 sacks. Also, it is allowing 386 yards and 20 points per game.

''They're playing with a lot of confidence,'' Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said. ''They're experienced on the back end, communicating well, playing with a lot of confidence. Their ends are getting a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Their linebackers, some new linebackers are there, but they're very athletic, they run around. They understand what they're doing and they fly to the football.''

Validation for Babers' system has come with victories over three signature programs - Clemson, Virginia Tech and Florida State. Another on Saturday would do wonders, though, since the first three came at home.

Babers is sticking with the message every coach delivers every week.

''Win or lose, it only counts as one game,'' Babers said. ''We're trying to win this week. I'm sure they're trying to do the same. If you make it more than that, you start to get ahead of yourself, and that's where you start to get in trouble.''

College Football Betting Preview ? Syracuse at Clemson

When the Syracuse Orange upset the defending national champion Clemson Tigers last year it appeared to be a landmark moment for the Orange and head coach Dino Babers, but Syracuse was unable to take advantage of the win as it turned out to be the climactic moment of their season.

So far this year Babers and the Orange have shown substantive improvement, but the betting public is yet sold, as the blue blood Clemson team is a three-touchdown favorite to extract revenge on Saturday.

Date and Time: Saturday, September 29, 2018, noon ET
Location: Memorial Stadium, Clemson, South Carolina
College Football Odds at BetDSI: Clemson -21.5
Syracuse vs. Clemson TV Coverage: ABC

Syracuse is 4-0 straight up and 3-0-1 against the spread with an even 2-2 split on totals so far to start the year in impressive fashion. The Orange posted their best win in week three when they annihilated the Florida State Seminoles 30-7. Last week Syracuse throttled Connecticut 51-21 as 30-point home chalks for a push. Babers has built one of the best offensive teams in the country. The Orange rank ninth in the country for rushing offense and 11th for scoring.

Clemson is also 4-0 straight up but is just 1-3 against the spread with an even 2-2 split on totals. But the Tigers are coming off their first payout of the season in a 49-21 win at Georgia Tech as 16-point favorites. Head coach Dabo Swinney?s team has impressive metrics in which they are ranked 20th overall in the nation for offense and ninth for defense.

New Clemson Quarterback Leads Offense

Swinney has named Trevor Lawrence the full-time starting quarterback after his dominant performance at Georgia Tech. Lawrence was the number two overall recruit this past spring. Bryant threw for 176 yards and four touchdowns against the Yellow Jackets last week and is averaging 10 yards per pass with a 9/2 touchdown to interception ratio.

Running back Travis Etienne is averaging 8.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns as the top Clemson ball carrier. Receiver Tee Higgins is averaging 22 yards per catch with five touchdowns to enhance the Tigers attack.

Dungey Leads the Cuse

Senior quarterback Eric Dungey is the key triggerman for the Syracuse offense with a team best 354 yards rushing and 6.9 yards per carry while throwing for nine touchdown passes and just one interception. Jamal Custis has 17 catches for 16.9 yards per reception with three touchdowns for Syracuse.

Key Stats

Syracuse has been a consistently good road dog with eight payouts in their last 11 games when getting points away from home. Three of their last four road matchups have gone under the total. Just as important is the fact that the Orange have paid in four of their last five as double-digit road dogs with four of their last six in that role going under the total.

Home chalk has been a case of red ink for Clemson as evidenced by their mark of 2-5 against the spread in that role. The Tigers have gone under the total in five of their last six as favorites at Memorial Stadium. Clemson has been a subpar betting value as a double-digit home chalk with just two covers in their last seven games in that role. The Tigers have gone under the total in four of their last five as home chalks of 10 or more points at Death Valley.

Syracuse of course scored a memorable 27-24 upset home win over Clemson last year as 23.5-point home dogs and that was their third payout in their last four games against the Tigers. Five of the last six meetings between these teams have gone under the total. However, in their last visit to Clemson in 2016 the Orange were annihilated 54-0 by the Tigers as 28-point dogs. The last two games at Memorial Stadium between these two teams have gone under the total.

Syracuse vs. Clemson Picks

Revenge is in the air at Death Valley for this one. And with Trevor Lawrence under center the Tigers now have the dynamic element on offense. Nobody at Clemson has forgotten that loss at Syracuse last year.

Syracuse vs. Clemson Pick: Bet the Clemson Tigers at BetDSI
Syracuse vs. Clemson Score Prediction: Clemson 42, Syracuse 17

Early Line Moves - Week 5
September 25, 2018
By BetDSI

College Football Week 5 Opening Line Report

So far, with a couple of notable exceptions, the betting public has been relatively cautious with the opening of week five college football action on the board. This means that the majority of games on the schedule were set just right by the linemakers. However, there are still a handful of games in which the public has seen early opportunity. The combination of recent performance, public perception, and the assessment of value has been found in some early moves that were made by sharps as soon as the opening odds were posted.

Week 5 Early Line Moves

Hawaii -8.5 to -12.5 vs. San Jose State

Hawaii has exploded out of the gate with four wins in their first five games as their return to their run and shoot offensive roots has been a major payoff. The Rainbow Warriors rank ninth nationally for passing offense as Quarterback Cole McDonald is closing in on 2000 yards already this season. San Jose State has all the appearances of a hopeless program that should fold. The Spartans are 0-3 straight up with a defense that ranks 126th overall nationally to go with a punchless offense ranked 116th in the country for scoring. Considering all of that the big move to Hawaii is of no surprise.

Texas A&M -17 to -20 vs. Arkansas
The Texas A&M Aggies won a considerable amount of respect in their 28-26 home loss to the Clemson Tigers in week two. Most people believed the Aggies were the better team in that game and should have won. But more to the point in this game is the absolute utter hopelessness of the Arkansas Razorbacks. New head coach Chad Morris took over an Arkansas team that was a mere shell of a program. Previous head coach Bret Bielema left an empty cupboard with players that were recruited to run a power ground game. Morris is a high temp spread coach without the players to implement his system. Two weeks ago North Texas stormed Arkansas with a 44-17 road payout. That is indicative of the Hogs woes and current plight.

Michigan -11 to -13.5 vs. Northwestern
True, Michigan is the most public of teams but that doesn?t take away from the fact that their 56-10 home payout last week over Nebraska popped a lot of eyes. Michigan is showing rapid improvement offensively while already boasting a rock-ribbed defense. Beyond that Northwestern has stumbled badly with back to back losses.

Oklahoma -21.5 to -24 over Baylor
This one is a bit puzzling in that the Oklahoma Sooners escaped with their lives in a near disaster against Army on which OU finally prevailed 28-21 in overtime as 30 point overlays. Additionally, the Sooners have covered just once so far in 2018 despite winning all four of their games. Baylor is coming off a 26-7 home payout over improved Kansas and has far better metrics compared to last year. Baylor may have just had their value enhanced with this move and the number could drop back down closer to game time.

Texas -7 to -9 over Kansas State
A lot of fans and gamblers were upset with Texas after their opening day loss at Maryland. But the Longhorns have caught everyone?s attention with dominant wins over TCU and USC. Texas still has mediocre metrics but improvement is slowly taking place with second year head coach Tom Herman. Kansas State was touted as a potential Big 12 dark horse contender in the preseason but that has proven to be overly optimistic after last week?s 35-6 loss at West Virginia. The Wildcats lack the athletes, depth and momentum to be taken seriously against resurgent Texas.

Washington State -2 to Utah -1
Washington State opened as a two-point chalk based on home field but their poor defensive play in a loss at USC last week turned off a lot of gamblers. Additionally, Utah is one of the toughest and best coached teams in college football.

Indiana -15 to -18 vs. Rutgers

This is all about Rutgers losing at Kansas 55-14 followed by a 42-13 home loss last week to Buffalo. The Scarlet Knights are lucky the Big Ten hasn?t called to say ?You?re Fired!?

Power 5 Top Wagers - Week 5
September 25, 2018

By Kyle Markus

NCAA Football Odds - Week 5 Power 5 Best Bets

There were a host of fantastic finishes, upsets and backdoor covers in Week 4 of the college football season. Week 5 is already just around the corner, and there promises to be just as much intriguing action. With so many games on the docket, it is a certainty that some heavy underdogs cover and sometimes even pull off the upsets and pay off handsomely on the moneyline.

Old Dominion pulled a shocking upset of Virginia Tech last week and a slew of underdogs would love to follow in its footsteps in Week 5. The trick for bettors is figuring out which underdogs are up to the challenge and when it?s a better idea to roll with the favorite to cover the spread in NCAA football betting.

Odds Analysis

One of the biggest games of the week features the Ohio State Buckeyes against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State survived a scare from Appalachian State in its opener but has since gotten on track and enters ranked No. 9 in the country. Ohio State is No. 4 and looking like one of the best bets to make the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes are only 3.5-point road favorites in this one as the oddsmakers believe this once could be a close battle. Ohio State, though, is just too talented and should cover the spread.

The Oklahoma Sooners had a clunker last time out but escaped with a close win. The oddsmakers aren?t holding it against them as the Sooners are a heavy 23.5-point favorite against the Baylor Bears. Oklahoma is at home and should put up a bunch of points in this one. Look for the Sooners to get back on track and to cover the hefty spread. If Oklahoma jumps out to a big lead, the ?under? in the second half could be in play in live betting.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been a disaster in 2018, as they are 0-3 after a blowout loss last time out to Michigan. Nebraska gets a much easier game this week against the Purdue Boilermakers, but are still the underdogs. The Huskers looked overmatched last week against Michigan but should finally bounce back and pick up the home win. Take Nebraska on the moneyline.

The LSU Tigers have been one of the most impressive teams in the early portion of the season. They have big-time wins thus far over ranked foes Miami and Auburn. LSU was the underdog both times and came away with the win. The Tigers will be a 12-point favorite against Mississippi next time out, and while LSU will win to move to 5-0, Ole Miss is the choice to keep this close and cover the spread.

The Pac-12 South is looking pretty weak and the USC Trojans are hoping to jump to the top of the division. The Trojans are 3.5-point road favorites to knock off the Arizona Wildcats and USC is the pick to cover against a suspect Arizona team.

Free NCAA Football ATS Picks

The games above are intriguing and there are some good wagers in there. However, there is a different one that stands out above the rest. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish made a quarterback change last week and came away with a blowout win over Wake Forest. Notre Dame will host the Stanford Cardinal in a top-10 clash in Week 5, with the winner remaining closely in the hunt for the College Football Playoff.

There is a lot on the line for both teams. Notre Dame is a 4.5-point favorite and is coming off a strong win. Stanford, meanwhile, pulled out a crazy comeback to beat Oregon in overtime and remain undefeated. The Cardinal was lucky last time out but will fall in this one. The Fighting Irish is also the pick to cover the spread in an easier win than the oddsmakers believed in NCAA football live betting.

Ohio State vs Penn State highlights college football Week 5 betting action
Patrick Everson

Week 5 of the college football season features a couple of matchups that could be pivotal in the race to reach the College Football Playoff. We check the opening lines and early action on a foursome of games, with insights from Derek Wilkinson, sportsbook supervisor at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions (+4)

Ohio State got through the Urban Meyer suspension with only one tough test, pulling away in the second half to beat Texas Christian at quasi-neutral-site AT&T Stadium in Week 3. Meyer returned to the sidelines this past weekend, and the Buckeyes (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) thumped Tulane 49-6, including a last-minute touchdown to give them the cover as 37.5-point home favorites.

Penn State is also out to a 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS start, surprisingly getting its biggest scare in an overtime home victory against Appalachian State in Week 1. In Week 4, the Nittany Lions hammered Illinois 63-24 as 25.5-point road chalk.

?Ohio State might be the more talented team, but Penn State is good and wants to avenge that brutal one-point loss last year,? Wilkinson said, alluding to the Buckeyes? come-from-behind, 39-38 home win laying 7 points. ?We took a bet on Penn State at +4 and briefly went to +3.5, then back up to +4. But by game time, I think it?ll be 3.5 or maybe 3.?

No. 7 Stanford Cardinal at No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-4.5)

Stanford is 4-0 SU, but by almost all rights shouldn?t be, after a gift win at Oregon in Week 4. The Cardinal (3-1 ATS) turned an inexplicable late Ducks turnover into a field goal to force overtime, where Stanford won 38-31 laying 3 points.

Notre Dame had three close victories in the first three weeks of the season, then got its offense in gear last weekend. The Fighting Irish (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) boatraced Wake Forest 56-27 laying 6 points on the road.

?This should be a really good game,? Wilkinson said. ?Notre Dame finally played up to its potential, and Stanford is riding high from its comeback win over Oregon. I like Notre Dame to continue with their momentum and cover that 4.5.?

Syracuse Orange at No. 2 Clemson Tigers (-23)

Clemson is a perennial CFP contender these days and is unblemished so far this year, though it dodged a Week 2 upset at Texas A&M. The Tigers (4-0 SU, 1-3 ATS) went to Georgia Tech as a 16-point fave in Week 4 and left with a 49-21 victory.

Syracuse is off to a surprising 4-0 start and sits 3-0-1 ATS, including a home blowout win over Florida State in Week 3. The Orange followed last weekend with a 51-21 rout of Connecticut, pushing as a 30-point road favorite. And the ?Cuse has some good recent history heading into this week?s ACC showdown, having upset Clemson 27-24 catching 24 points at home last October.

?This line might seem a little high at first glance. Both teams are 4-0, and Syracuse has blown out all of its opponents so far,? Wilkinson said. ?However, the Orange haven?t played anyone like the No. 2 Tigers. I think the public may bet Syracuse plus the points, but I like Clemson at home to blow out the Orange.?

No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies at No. 23 Duke Blue Devils (-5.5)

Virginia Tech opened the season with two easy wins and cashes, and had its game against East Carolina canceled due to Hurricane Florence, ostensibly getting a bye week. The Hokies (2-1 SU and ATS) then traveled to Old Dominion as a hefty 27.5-point favorite ? and shockingly lost outright 49-35, getting outscored 28-7 in the final quarter.

The Hokies also lost starting quarterback Josh Jackson indefinitely to a broken fibula.

Duke is out to a 4-0 SU start, cashing in its first three games. In Week 4 at home against overmatched North Carolina Central, the Blue Devils rumbled to a 55-13 victory but fell a couple points short of covering as massive 44.5-point chalk.

?VaTech is coming off a tough loss, and the Hokies lost their quarterback,? Wilkinson said. ?The line has actually dropped to Duke -5 for now, and I?m not really sure why, since VaTech?s star QB is out. I anticipate that line to go up as the week progresses.?

North Carolina at Miami
September 25, 2018
By Joe Nelson

This week?s Thursday night ESPN game comes from the ACC in a matchup many figured would be a key game in the ACC Coastal standings. Neither team has the record they hoped for heading into the final week of September, but both teams remain without a loss in conference play, with the winner of this game remaining a threat in the quest to reach the ACC Championship.

Match-up: North Carolina Tar Heels at Miami Hurricanes
Venue: At Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida
Time/TV: Thursday, Sep. 27, 8:00 PM ET ESPN
Line: Miami -18, Over/Under 55
Last Meeting: 2017, Miami (-21) 24, at North Carolina 19

After winning 10 games in a row to start last season and reaching #2 in the polls, the Hurricanes closed last season with three straight defeats and Mark Richt?s squad lost in the 2018 opener despite being considered a top 10 caliber team in the opening polls. The Hurricanes weren?t overly competitive in that 33-17 defeat against LSU in Arlington but have since rallied to reach 3-1 ahead of this week?s ACC opener.

The big storyline is the quarterback decision Richt faces this week. Senior Malik Rosier led the team to great success last season with a 3,000-yard passing season while also rushing for nearly 500 yards. He had 26 touchdowns last season but also 14 interceptions and completed only 54 percent of his passes. Rosier had two interceptions in the opening loss to LSU, but had played well the previous two games with wins over FCS Savannah State and Toledo. Last week, Rosier was benched after Miami failed to score on the first two possessions hosting Florida International, even though he attempted only three passes.

Taking over was freshman N?Kosi Perry, a taller and quicker Ocala product that played well in mop-up action against Savannah State. Perry was sharp with 68 percent completions in relief against FIU, leading an eventual 31-17 win in a game Miami controlled with a 31-0 edge before allowing late scoring. Perry does have two interceptions in his 39 pass attempts but also six touchdown passes with a much higher completion rate than Rosier has featured. He didn?t take meaningful snaps in either of Miami?s road games and it will be a quick turnaround with the Thursday game and less practice time with the first team if Perry is indeed starting against North Carolina as most expect.

Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas have provided a strong rushing presence for the Hurricanes as although each has just one rushing touchdown, they have combined for 500 yards with productive averages. Jeff Thomas has been the big play threat in the passing game with a whopping 315 receiving yards on only 12 catches as Miami?s offense can remain capable with either quarterback.

Miami became a national phenomenon last season with the turnover chain and this season the Hurricanes have been formidable on pass defense with four interceptions while holding opposing quarterbacks to just a 49 percent completion rate. Miami has been among the elite rush defenses in the nation with just 2.1 yards per rush allowed in four games with run defense a consistent area of strength since Richt took over. Miami has an even turnover margin on the season and the only defensive touchdown of the season came on a blocked punt and it was also in the fourth quarter of a FCS game that was 56-0 at the time.

North Carolina was in the summer headlines for the wrong reasons with a shoe selling scandal with 13 players ultimately suspended for various lengths staggered over the start of the season. Last season?s passing leader sophomore Chazz Surratt was among those with a four-game suspension, effectively handing the quarterback competition win to junior Nathan Elliott after they split time last season.

The suspension for Surratt is now over even through just three games as the cancelled game with UCF did count. Elliott has been named the starter this week coming off a fine performance in a win over Pittsburgh last weekend. He threw for 313 yards with no interceptions and two touchdowns leading North Carolina?s first win 38-35. That performance was needed after a four interception season debut at California while also struggling in the loss to East Carolina.

The 0-2 start was a surprise for a Tar Heels team that many expected to compete in the Coastal race. The Tar Heels were a disappointment at 3-9 last season but the team played well in the season?s final month and now with the roster more completely intact this is a team that is a threat to make noise in the division race. North Carolina has leaned on Antonio Williams in the ground game with 6.6 yards per carry, so far unseating Jordon Brown who was the team?s top rusher last season.

Run defense has been an area of concern with 4.8 yards per carry surrendered, but the Tar Heels have been fairly tough on opposing quarterbacks with four interceptions for the defense along with only three passing touchdowns allowed. After being -4 in turnovers in the opener, the Tar Heels are even since but the defense has allowed over 900 yards in the past two games after holding California to fewer than 300 yards in the opener.

These teams were on opposite ends of the standings in a late October game in Chapel Hill last season with Miami ranked #8 nationally and undefeated playing as a road favorite vs. a then 1-7 North Carolina team that was 0-5 in ACC play. The Tar Heels competed well with a 7-6 game at the half before Miami went for 78 yards on its first offensive snap in the third quarter. North Carolina still only trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter and had the ball back down five in the final minutes before losing a fumble in Miami territory. The production numbers were similar with North Carolina actually featuring a slight yardage edge but also four turnovers.

This spread suggests the gap between these programs has closed a bit since last season and this is potentially a dangerous date on the schedule for Miami with the Florida State game up next weekend. All eyes will be on Perry in his most significant test with Richt putting himself open to criticism as Rosier has won a lot of games for the Hurricanes. Perry might provide the best hope for an ACC title shot however with this game a big step in the season goals for both teams.

Historical Trends:

-- North Carolina has covered in nine of the last 14 meetings including in each of the past three seasons, winning S/U in 2015 and 2016 before a five-point loss last season.

-- Miami is just 3-8 ATS as a favorite in this series since 2004, but most of the failures in this series have been in Chapel Hill where Miami has covered once in seven tries.

Demoted Clemson QB Bryant misses 2nd straight practice
September 25, 2018
By The Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Demoted Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant missed his second straight practice since freshman Trevor Lawrence was picked to start for the No. 3 Tigers on Saturday against Syracuse.

Bryant was given Monday's workout off by Dabo Swinney after what the coach said was an ''emotional'' talk with his senior quarterback.

The team said Bryant also was not at Tuesday's workout.

Bryant started all last season and the first four games of this year. The Tigers (4-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) have a record of 16-2 in his starts.

However, Swinney said Lawrence's production this season made him the choice against the Orange (4-0, 1-0).

Swinney said Bryant did not tell him he wished to transfer in their talk.

Bryant is a graduate who could play immediately elsewhere next season, as long as he does not play anymore this year
