NCAA Football Game Preview - Cincinnati Bearcats at UCLA Bruins

The Chip Kelly era will begin when the UCLA Bruins open the season in Week 1 with a matchup against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Kelly built a dynasty at Oregon before trying his luck in the NFL. That didn?t work out so now he is back at the college level looking to dominate again.

It could take a couple years until the Bruins get the right type of recruits in on offense to run his system, but UCLA at least hopes to show some progress this year. Cincinnati struggled to a 4-8 record last season and this is a tall test going on the road in the opener against a school with a lot of tradition.

It?s easy to see why the Bearcats will be the underdogs in college football gambling.

The Cincinnati Bearcats and UCLA Bruins will face off on Saturday, September 1st, 2018 at 7 p.m. ET at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have college football odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NCAA football season.

Odds Analysis

UCLA is currently being wagered on as the 14.5-point favorite. The Bearcats are getting slightly more action at that number, especially because a two-touchdown loss would still result in a cover. However, the oddsmakers know what they are doing and wanted to get some more action on Cincinnati. The Bruins are the heavy -675 favorites on the moneyline and aren?t getting much money on that number. The Bearcats are bringing in some action as +492 underdogs.

The scoring total is listed at 64 points, as the oddsmakers believe a shootout is on the horizon. The ?over? is the more popular selection, with nearly 75 percent of the money headed that way in NCAA football odds.

Quarterback Watch

Kelly has yet to name a starting quarterback for this game and may choose not to before the contest. There is currently a three-way competition for the job, and while Kelly certainly has an idea who he is going to pick, he is keeping the decision close to the vest.

Michigan transfer Wilton Speight is one option, as is Devon Modster and the athletic dynamo Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Speight doesn?t seem to fit the zone-read scheme which worked so well for Kelly in Oregon but he does have a lot of experience. Thompson-Robinson could make the most sense long term but it remains to be seen if he is the choice right away or if he still needs to gain experience before taking over. Keep an eye on any announcement regarding this position as it could have an effect on the outcome.

Key Stat

287. That?s the number of rushing yards per game UCLA gave up a season ago, which was among the worst in college football. While Kelly will work his magic on the offensive side of the ball, the Bruins are going to need to stop people in order to be competitive.

Gerrid Doaks is one of the Cincinnati running backs looking to take advantage with a big game. He only had the third-most carries on the team in 2017 but finished as the leading rusher with 513 yards, averaging an impressing 5.9 yards per carry.

Michael Warren II is also back and if the Bearcats? running-back-by-committee can carve up big chunks of yardage on the ground this could be a close affair.

Free College Football ATS Picks

UCLA might not have the perfect situation at quarterback quite yet and the defense is a work in progress. Kelly is likely to get this thing humming sooner rather than later, but the opener could be a slog. Look for Cincinnati to keep this moderately close and cover the spread.

UCLA will at least come away with a less-than-inspiring victory at home in college football gambling. Take the ?under? on the scoring total.

College Football ATS Pick: UCLA Bruins 34, Cincinnati Bearcats 27

College Football Betting ? Michigan at Notre Dame

It is a matchup of Top 15 teams on Saturday night, as the Michigan Wolverines visit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on NBC. It is a huge opener for both head coaches, as Michigan?s Jim Harbaugh has not won many big games in his tenure, while Notre Dame?s Brian Kelly could be on the hot seat in South Bend.

The winner of this game will likely vault into the Top 10 and be a team to watch in terms of the College Football Playoff, while the loser could be out of contention. Let?s look at Saturday?s game and college football picks.

Date and Time: Saturday, September 1, 2018, 7:30 p.m. ET
Location: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, IN
College Football Odds : Notre Dame -1.5, O/U 47
Michigan vs. Notre Dame TV Coverage: NBC

The focus on Saturday night will be on the quarterback position. The Fighting Irish are led by Brandon Wimbush, while the Wolverines have Shea Patterson. Wimbush was not that impressive last season, as he completed just 49% of his passes. He was replaced in the Citrus Bowl by Ian Book and if Winbush struggles again he could get a quick hook. Kelly said that he has changed the offense to take advantage of Winbush?s running ability. ?This is much more about calling the offense for who Brandon Wimbush is than who we want him to be, more than anything else, and that?s what you?ll see Saturday night.? Kelly said to the media.

On the other side, Patterson is a conventional drop back quarterback. Just how good he is we really don?t know because he will be playing for his fourth team in five years. He did play well for Ole Miss last season, but suffered a knee injury in a loss to LSU.

Michigan was excellent on defense last season, as they were third in the country in total defense. They return two All-Big Ten defensive ends, Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich. Notre Dame is also stout on defense and could have their best defensive line since 2012.

Players to Watch

There is no question that this game will come down to the two quarterbacks. Patterson looked really good while at Ole Miss, and if he is as good as advertised the Wolverines could be national title contenders. What we don?t know is how he will handle playing in a hostile environment. On the other side, the Fighting Irish simply have to get great play from Winbush. Kelly changed the offense to suit Winbush, so it should be all about Winbush scrambling around and making plays with his feet and big arm. Kelly pretty much said exactly that to the media. ?You have to be a guy that is out there making plays. Now, within the scope of the offense, we?re not drawing it up in the sand. But he?s a playmaker, and he?s got to go out there with the confidence to make plays.?

Key Stats

The Wolverines are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 meetings at Notre Dame. The Wolverines are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Wolverines are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Fighting Irish are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. the Big Ten.

Looking at the total, the Over is 7-1-1 in the Wolverines last 9 non-conference games. The Over is 11-4 in the Wolverines last 15 road games. The Over is 4-0 in Notre Dame?s last 4 vs. the Big Ten.

Michigan vs. Notre Dame Picks

Who do you trust? That is really the question in this game. Harbaugh has not proven he can win big games and we don?t know how Patterson will react to pressure. Kelly hasn?t been much better in big games, and we don?t know if Winbush can avoid making mistakes. I lean a little bit to Notre Dame simply because they are at home, but the safer pick might just be to play the total. Both Michigan and Notre Dame have excellent defenses, so I will take this game under the total.

Michigan vs. Notre Dame Pick: Under 47
Michigan vs. Notre Dame Score Prediction: Notre Dame 23, Michigan 20

College Football Betting ? Washington vs. Auburn

Can you say elimination game in Week 1? The No. 6 Washington Huskies play the No. 9 Auburn Tigers on Saturday in Atlanta with the loser probably out of College Football Playoff consideration. Perhaps Auburn could get back into the discussion if they run the table because they play in the SEC, but Washington is almost assuredly done if they lose this game. The Tigers are slight favorites in this contest, with the total at 48.5. Let?s look at Saturday?s game on ABC and college football picks.

Date and Time: Saturday, September 1, 2018, 3:30 p.m. ET
Location: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA
College Football OddsI: Auburn -2.5, O/U 48.5
Washington vs. Auburn TV Coverage: ABC

The Huskies are the higher ranked team, but they are listed as an underdog in this contest. This is a neutral site game in Atlanta, but there is no question that the Tigers will have the edge in crowd support. Washington returns quarterback Jake Browning for his fourth season. He was really good for most of 2016 with 34 TDs and three picks in his first nine games, but he struggled late in that season with a shoulder injury and he never looked the same in 2017. Washington also brings back running back Myles Gaskin who returns for his senior season. He has had at least 1,300 yards in each of his first three seasons.

On defense, the Huskies will rely heavily on defensive tackle Greg Gaines to stop the run. He has had some injury questions, but all indications are that he will play on Saturday. Washington defensive back JoJo McIntosh said to the media that this year?s defense is superb. ?I think it?s the best defense we?ve had,? said McIntosh. ?We?ve lost players over the years, but we keep getting more and more players, and we keep getting better and better.?

The Tigers will rely heavily on running back Kam Martin who averaged 6.1 yards per carry last season. Auburn had three running backs last season who carried the load, but this season it looks to be all about Martin. The Tigers have a good passing attack with quarterback Jarrett Stidham, but they will be going up against an excellent Washington secondary.

On defense, the Tigers will rely on defensive end Marlon Davidson who had 3.5 sacks and 43 tackles. He will be needed in a big way on Saturday, as the Auburn defense looks to pressure Browning. Washington head coach Chris Petersen is well aware of Auburn?s defense. ?Their defense jumps out right away,? Petersen said to the media, ?That is a physical group that doesn?t make a lot of mistakes. ? Sometimes when guys are moving the ball and scoring points, its broken-down plays when quarterbacks are scrambling.?

Key Stats

The Huskies are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games on grass. The Huskies are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Tigers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games. The Tigers are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.

Looking at the total, the Under is 8-3 in the Huskies last 11 games on grass. The Over is 7-3 in the Huskies last 10 non-conference games. The Under is 5-0-2 in the Tigers last 7 neutral site games. The Under is 12-3-2 in the Tigers last 17 non-conference games.

Washington vs. Auburn Picks

The Huskies and Tigers both feature top quarterbacks and solid running attacks, but each team also has a very good defense. Browning has simply not looked like a top quarterback since 2016 and Washington has relied on their running game. The Tigers have Stidham but they also want to run the ball. A lot of pundits have been going with the Huskies in this contest, but I am not sold on Browning and I think Auburn is the better team. Having said that, I think the best option is to play the total. Both teams should be able to slow down the opposing offense, so I will take this game under the total.

Washington vs. Auburn Pick: Under 48.5
Washington vs. Auburn Score Prediction: Auburn 24, Washington 21

Saturday's Best Bet
August 31, 2018

Saturday College Football Best Bet

College football bettors are preparing like it's Christmas morning tomorrow with the first full slate of Saturday games upon us, and thankfully more and more programs are making note of what past CFB selection committees have done and not easing into the year with three or four ?cupcakes? right out of the gate.

There are some great games across the entire CFB landscape on Saturday ? along with plenty of cupcake contests ? and if you've been cruising around the VegasInsider.com site all week you've likely already come across some great content for some of these games.

Yet, just like an actual Christmas morning, the more presents that have your name on the better, so I'm not going to shy away from providing even more great betting content for your consumption to hopefully get this first weekend of CFB out of the way with a few more betting units in our pockets.

Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

Best Bet #1: USC -26

The USC Trojans are moving past the Sam Darnold era and into the JT Daniels era with Daniels being named as the starter earlier this week. Daniels is a true freshman ? the first time USC has began a season with a true freshman QB since 2009 ? and his appointment is why the betting percentages at VegasInsider.com show some heavy support for UNLV + all those points. But HC Clay Helton wouldn't have put this young kid in this role at a prominent program like USC if he didn't think he could hand the expectations and pressure both on and off the field.

True freshman QB's are ones that I prefer to fade in their first game if it's on the road (and any first true road game really), but at home they are tend to be put in a position to succeed. Daniels is the reigning Gatorade National Player of the Year which definitely helps, and although the Trojans are also replacing their leading rusher and receiver from a year ago, those are positions that the Trjoans are always good at simply reloading. UNLV is not going to be a good defensive team at all in 2018, and this may end up being the perfect opponent for all those new faces on the Trojans attack to produce and gel.

It's going to be the Trojans defense that's going to have to carry this team for the first few weeks (especially with a trip to Stanford on deck) and they are loaded with returning starters and experience in the back seven. All seven of their returning starters on defense are at least juniors, and with all of them either in the linebacking core or the secondary, there is little chance we see maybe any chunk plays from UNLV's attack. Sustaining drives against that type of experience won't be easy either, and if you are going to be a big road underdog and cover a four-TD spread, you've got to either score with big, explosive plays or sustain drives to shorten the game. UNLV won't be able to do either of those.

Finally, you'd be remiss to ignore the betting percentages here as it seems a play on UNLV has only gathered so much momentum because many out there are quick to fade this USC team that's often overhyped and has a freshman QB. But many of those same bettors weren't singing the same tune on Thursday when they backed Minnesota and their freshman QB in a nearly identical spot, and UNLV is probably much worse than that New Mexico State team that was missing defensive starters and playing their second game in six days.

The Trojans have likely heard much of that noise too about starting a freshman QB and trying to get back to the National Title picture and it's tough to imagine a better spot for them to come out at home and make a profound statement to the college football world that they are ready to take that next step this year. I made this line closer to the four-TD mark of -28, but with the Runnin' Rebels now in that dreaded public dog role and me already getting a number below 28, pouncing on the Trojans in Week 1 is a must in what should be a 30+ point win.

Top 25 Notes

-- Top-ranked Alabama remains the gold standard in college football until further notice. They rolled up a 51-14 victory against Louisville as a 23 1/2-point favorite at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla. The only drama in this game came down to whether or not the over or under would cash. See bad beats below. ... There were concerns that Ohio State might be a bit distracted due to the Urban Meyer suspension, but Oregon State knows the Buckeyes were plenty focused. Ohio State covered the largest spread of any FBS vs. FBS game, hammering the beleaguered Beavers by a 77-31 score. They ended up getting the cover late, yet another big-time program dealing out a bit of a bad beat in the opening weekend. ... On the 11-year anniversary of their colossal upset in Ann Arbor, Appalachian State was at it again at Penn State. They entered the game as 24 1/2-point underdogs, but the Mountaineers put a scare into the Top 10 Nittany Lions. App State scored 28 points in the final quarter to force overtime, 38-38. Penn State survived in OT, 45-38, but soon Big Ten clubs are going to refuse to take calls from Boone, N.C. about future scheduling.

-- Auburn-Washington looked like one of the best matchups of the opening slate on paper, and it certainly lived up to the billing. Sure, there were some mistakes on both sides, but this one came right down to the end. Auburn ended up securing a 21-16 victory, potentially damaging Washington's playoff hopes before their second game of the season, while the Tigers earned a huge feather for their cap.

-- Michigan-Notre Dame was another highly anticipated matchup, as these two storied schools renewed their rivalry. Jim Harbaugh has a new toy under center in QB Shea Patterson, but the Wolverines were tripped up 24-17 to lose for the 17th straight time on the road against a ranked opponent.

-- Two games were cancelled due to inclement weather, including the Akron-Nebraska. It was supposed to be the celebration of Scott Frost's return to Lincoln. His debut will have to wait another week until Colorado pays a visit next week. The other cancelled game was South Dakota State-Iowa State, the first cancelled game for the Cyclones since 1963 when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. There are no plans to make up either contest.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) mostly did what they were supposed to do, and that is win. That is, except for Louisville. North Carolina-California was also a bit of a coin-flip game, and the Golden Bears came away with the 24-17 result. UNC slipped to 0-4 SU over the past four season openers, and a disturbing 0-5-1 ATS across the past six season openers dating back to Sept. 1, 2012. ... Wake Forest grinded out a tough 23-17 win in overtime on the road against Tulane as the Green Wave narrowly covered a seven-point number at most shops. The Demon Deacons have been favored by three or more points just four times since the start of the 2010 season. The last time they covered as favorites by a field goal or more on the road was Nov. 28, 2009 at Duke.

-- Mid-American giant killer Northern Illinois entered the weekend 4-1 SU in their past five against Big Ten opponents. Iowa was wearing their upset bug repellent and never gave the Huskies a chance to threaten. It was a 3-0 lead at halftime for Iowa, so the thought was NIU could still make it happen. But the Hawkeyes pulled away in the second half for an emphatic 33-7 victory. ... Indiana hung on tight for a 38-28 road victory against Butch Davis and Florida International despite hot and humid conditions in South Florida. The Golden Panthers did grab the cover, however. ... Northwestern handed Purdue a loss in Thursday's game, 31-27. While the Wildcats won at Ross-Ade, the Boilermakers showed they're not going to be a pushover any longer.

-- Oklahoma was expected to receive a little more resistance from Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic on Saturday, but the Owls remain a cream puff rather than a giant killer like App State, NIU, etc. Boomer Sooner laid down the boom, rolling up a 56-0 lead at one point before the Owls finally lit up their side of the scoreboard. ... It looks like another long season is in the offing for Kansas, as they suffered a 26-23 setback against FCS Nicholls State. Hey, at least the Jayhawks forced them to overtime. ... Kansas State almost joined their rivals in misery, as FCS South Dakota gave the Wildcats all they could handle at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan. In the end, K-State survived 27-24, but they have a lot of work to do. ... West Virginia humbled Tennessee in a neutral-site battle, as QB Will Grier kept his Heisman campaign on schedule.

-- UCLA was unable to pull any comeback heroics like last season against Texas A&M. It was Cincinnati spoiling the debut of Chip Kelly, 26-17. ... Southern California was a bit sluggish in their home opener against UNLV, but the alarm clock went off to start the fourth quarter. The Runnin' Rebels trailed just 19-14 going into the final 15 minutes, but the Trojans outscored the visitors 24-7 and they nearly covered. ... Washington State-Wyoming was supposed to be more of a defensive struggle, at least for the visiting Cougars. The Cowboys have an impressive defense, and they shut down New Mexico State in Week Zero. The Cougs weren't having any of it, piling up 41 points in a 41-19 win. It wasn't as lopsided as it looks, though. Wazzu entered the final 15 minutes up just 20-19 before running away.

-- Ole Miss looked mighty impressive on the road at Texas Tech, winning 47-27 to easily cover a 2 1/2-point number. ... South Carolina was not a very kind host to Coastal Carolina, smashing the Chanticleers by a 49-15 count. The Gamecocks covered the 30 1/2-point number, their largest spread covered since winning 70-10 as 34 1/2-point favorites on Nov. 23, 2013 against, yep...Coastal Carolina. ... Vanderbilt was supposed to receiver a bigger test against South Middle Tennessee, as they were just a three-point favorite. The Commodores roughed up the Blue Raiders by a 35-7 count.

Mid-Major Report

-- Temple was shocked by FCS Villanova at home, losing 19-17. The Owls led 17-13 heading to the final quarter, but the Wildcats ended up celebrating in the end. For FBS teams nicknamed the Owls (FAU, Temple and Rice), they ended up 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS. Only Rice earned a cover in their 45-27 loss against Houston. ... Memphis lost a lot of key components, but it didn't show in their 66-14 victory over FCS Mercer. The Tigers piled up 28 points in both the first and second quarter to build a 56-0 halftime lead before letting the reserves bring it home. ... SMU had their lunch handed to them by North Texas, 46-23. The two sides combined for 33 points in the fourth quarter, but came up just short of the total (71 1/2).

-- Texas El-Paso entered their contest against FCS Northern Arizona as seven-point underdogs despite the fact the game was being played at home. Vegas got it right, and then some...as the Lumberjacks crushed their FBS opponent by a 30-10 count. It's gonna be a long season in El Paso, so be prepared to fade the Miners. ... Marshall picked up a 35-28 road win against rival Miami-Ohio, covering as one-point road 'dogs. The Thundering Herd is now 6-0 SU/5-1 ATS across their past six season openers. ... Old Dominion went to Liberty, favored by five points. The Flames, playing in their first game ever as an FBS program, never faltered in the 52-10 victory against the Monarchs.

-- Central Michigan opened on the road against Kentucky, and John Bonamego's crew hung around for a while. In fact, they trailed just 21-20 at halftime. But the Chips were scoreless in the second half to slip up 35-20. They were able to hang around for the cover, however. ... Ohio roughed up FCS Hampton in their opener last season, but this year they had trouble with Howard. The Bison won a game against the FBS last season at UNLV, and they were trying to spring another upset as 31 1/2-point 'dogs. Eventually the Bobcats won 38-32, but it wasn't pretty.

-- Idaho dropped back down to FCS, and Fresno State treated them rather rudely in their visit to the Valley. The Bulldogs scored seven rushing touchdowns en route to a 79-13 win. ... Nevada also went for a 70-burger against FCS Portland State, winning 72-19 to cover a four-touchdown spread. ... Offense was not missing in the Islands, either. Hawaii is off to a 2-0 SU/ATS start after sinking Navy. The Warriors are using the run-and-shoot and look like a very entertaining group early on. ... San Jose State is going to be terrible again. They were dropped 44-38 at home against FCS UC-Davis. Ouch.

Bad Beats

-- Oregon State was covering the 40-point number for the entire game, but Beavers side bettors were sunk by Buckeyes reserve RB Master Teague, as he ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run with 3:50 to go for the 77-31 win and cover.

-- Louisville didn't score much in their neutral-site battle against 'Bama, but they scored enough. 'Under' (60) were left muttering to themselves after Kemari Averett hauled in an 8-yard TD pass with 1:55 to play to close the Tide lead to 51-14, changing the 'under' to an 'over'. Why? WHY?!?!?!

-- Army was trailing 31-14, and they were attempting a long field goal in the closing minutes at Duke. The field goal was blocked, which was the good news for 'under' (46) bettors. The bad news is that the Blue Devils returned it deep into Black Knights territory. With 3:59 to go, Duke booted a 30-yard field goal which had no impact on the score or line, but it flipped an 'under' to an 'over'.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

? Raiders also traded with Buffalo for QB AJ McCarron; Gruden likes to collect QB?s. Oakland gave the Bills a 5th-round draft pick for a guy with three NFL starts. Oakland cut Connor Cook.

? Word out of Philly: QB Nick Foles will start the Eagles? season opener Thursday.

? Notre Dame 24, Michigan 17? Emotion outweighed execution in this game.

? New Jersey Giants kept four QB?s on their 53-man roster.

? Dallas Cowboys released veteran kicker Dan Bailey.

? With rosters expanding on Sept 1, A?s activated eight players Saturday, mostly pitchers.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday

13) Oakland Raiders traded star LB Khalil Mack to the Bears Saturday, getting two first round picks in return. Consensus on the Interweb is that this is a good trade for Chicago. Teams also swapped four other draft picks; Bears got a 2nd round pick in 2020, Raiders got a 3rd.

This says that Jon Gruden has all the power in Oakland; GM Reggie McKenzie and owner Mark Davis were supposedly not real anxious to trade Mack, but they also weren?t close to signing him to a new contract, either.

Chicago quickly gave Mack a 6-year, $141M contract extension. After the trade was announced, Bears dropped from 100-1 to 40-1 to win the Super Bowl; Raiders went from 20-1 to 40-1.

12) Auburn 21, Washington 16- Huskies gained 398 yards, but scored only one TD; they were 5-14 on 3rd down, -2 in turnovers and missed a short FG. SEC teams are now 9-3 in their last 12 games against Pac-12 opponents.

11) Penn State 45, Appalachian State 38, OT? 11 years ago this weekend, App State won at Michigan, when the Wolverines were #5 in country. App State was a I-AA team then; they?re in the Sun Belt now, and was a 24-point underdog here- they scored 28 points in 4th quarter after trailing 24-10, but the Nittany Lions tied the game with 0:42 left and avoided the upset in OT.

10) Cincinnati 26, UCLA 17? 6:00 left in the game, Cincy led 19-17; UCLA had 4th-and-1 from its own 36 with a true freshman (backup) QB playing, and the Bruins went for it, threw the ball, and failed miserably. Poor start to the Chip Kelly era in Westwood.

9) Maryland 34, Texas 29? For second year in a row, Terrapins upset Texas as a double-digit underdog; this game was delayed a while by stormy weather.

8) Michigan State 38, Utah State 31? Spartans were favored by 23.5, but needed a 13-yard TD with 2:00 left to hold off the gritty Aggies, who threw for 319 yards and look to be an improved team this season.

7) I-A teams that lost to I-AA teams:
? San Jose State (-2.5) lost 44-38 to Cal-Davis.
? Temple (-14.5) lost 19-17 to Villanova.
? UTEP (+7) lost 30-10 to Northern Arizona.
? Kansas (-9) lost 26-23 in OT to Nicholls State.

6) Rutgers 35, Texas State 7? Bobcats? only score came on a pick-6; they had zero INT?s all of last season, which is hard to believe. Not sure I?ve ever heard of a team going thru an entire season with no INT?s. Bobcats were -15 in turnovers LY, -14 the year before, going 2-10 both seasons. Hard to win with terrible turnover margins.

5) West Virginia 40, Tennessee 14- Will Grier passed for 429 yards, five TD?s, as Mountaineers opened their season with a decisive win on a neutral field in Charlotte. Total yardage in this game was 547-301.

4) Illinois 31, Kent State 24? Huge sigh of relief from Champaign; Illini trailed this game 17-3 at the half. Total yardage was 469-453, not a good omen for the Illini?s Big 14 hopes.

3) Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 27? Signing Day for college football is usually the first Wednesday in February; every year on day after Signing Day, I ask here why Texas Tech doesn?t sign more defensive players, and then in the fall, when their defense sucks, I ask again.

Last two years, Texas Tech lost eight games that they scored 30+ points in.

2) Buffalo Bills cut WR Corey Coleman, who they acquired from Cleveland this month; Bills now have $50M of dead money on their salary cap- next highest is Dallas, with $26M in dead money.

1) Cowboys? TE Rico Gathers was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession by police in Frisco, TX Friday, as he sat on the bubble to make the Dallas roster. No bueno.

Gathers played basketball at Baylor; not sure what else to say here, other than your job as a player is to give the team reasons to keep you, not reasons to cut you.

Somehow, Gathers still made the Cowboys? 53-man roster; we?ll see if he sticks.

Miami, Fl. vs. LSU
September 1, 2018
By Brian Edwards

Matchup: (8) Miami, Fl. vs. (25) LSU
Venue: AT&T Stadium Arlington, TX
Time/TV: Sunday, Sept. 2, ABC, 7:30 p.m. ET

Miami and LSU are set to collide Sunday night at Jerry World in Arlington for the 2018 Advocare Kickoff Classic at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC. As of Saturday afternoon, most betting shops had the Hurricanes installed as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 47. The Tigers were +145 on the money line (risk $100 to win $145).

Ed Orgeron?s team finished 2017 with a 9-4 straight-up record and an 8-5 against-the-spread mark. The Tigers bring back five starters on offense and five on defense. They lost 26 lettermen, including star RB Derrius Guice, senior QB Danny Etling (16/2 touchdown-to-interception ratio last year), its top three wide receivers and five of their top eight tacklers.

The keys to LSU?s offense have been handed to junior quarterback Joe Burrow, a graduate transfer from Ohio State. Burrow participated in a tight battle for the starting QB job at OSU during spring practice. When he didn?t win the gig, Burrow opted to transfer and chose LSU over Ohio and Cincinnati.

Burrow played at garbage time in 10 games for the Buckeyes over two years, throwing for 287 yards and two TDs without an interception. He had a decorated prep career in Athens, Ohio, and was a four-star recruit.

The Matt Canada experiment at offensive coordinator didn?t work out and Canada is now the interim head coach at Maryland. Steven Ensminger, who is entering his ninth season on the LSU staff, will take over as full-time OC for the first time in his career. He faces many challenges and doesn?t have a star RB returning like the last five LSU teams have had.

In addition, sophomore right guard Ed Ingram has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Ingram started 12 of the 13 games he played in as a true freshman. Junior WR Drake Davis is also suspended indefinitely (legal issues). As a sophomore, Davis had only three catches but they went for 134 yards and two TDs.

Senior TE Foster Moreau is ?questionable? due to an undisclosed injury. The hope is that Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles will immediately return to his 2016 form after sitting out last year due to transfer rules. Giles was a second-team All-Big-12 selection in ?16 when he hauled in 69 receptions for 1,158 yards and 13 TDs. There?s also a lot of optimism for true freshman WR Terrace Marshall, who enrolled early and participated in spring practice. He is a five-star recruit that many publications had as the country?s best prep WR last year.

Phil Steele?s SEC Unit Rankings have LSU?s running backs ranked 11th out of 14 teams. The offensive line is ranked fifth in the SEC and 19th nationally, but the WRs are ranked eighth in the league.

While the offense is dealing with a lot of change, the LSU defense still has one of the nation?s best DCs in Dave Aranda, who is the highest paid assistant in college football with a $2.5 million salary per year. His group has a pair of preseason first-team All-Americans in cornerback Greedy Williams and LB Devin White.

White garnered second-team All-American honors as a true sophomore last season. He produced 133 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, five QB hurries, three passes broken up and one interception. Williams, who Steele has ranked as the No. 1 cornerback available for the 2019 NFL Draft, recorded 38 tackles, 11 PBU, six interceptions, 1.5 TFL?s and one QB hurry. Williams earned first-team All-SEC honors in 2017.

LSU?s defense allowed only 18.9 points per game last season. Sophomore safety Grant Delpit is a preseason second-team All-SEC pick. He had 60 tackles, eight PBU, 3.5 TFL?s, one interception and one QB hurry.

Steele ranks LSU?s secondary No. 1 in the SEC and No. 4 nationally. Meanwhile, the LBs are second in the SEC and 10th in the nation, and the defensive line is ranked sixth in the conference and 26th in the country.

Cole Tracy will be LSU?s place-kicker after arriving from Assumption College as a grad transfer. He is a preseason third-team All-SEC selection in Steele?s mag.

Miami is entering the third season of Mark Richt?s tenure since he arrived after a long run at Georgia. Richt is 19-7 SU and 14-14 ATS to date. The ?Canes went 10-3 SU and 5-8 ATS last year. They bring back seven starters on offense and seven on defense. Only 17 lettermen were lost.

Expectations are high in Coral Gables. Most Vegas books have UM?s season win total at 9.5 and it is the favorite to win the Coastal Division and return to the ACC Championship Game. Richt led his alma mater to its first ACC Championship Game appearance in ?17, but UM was missing several key players to injuries and got thumped 38-3 by Clemson.

Miami won its first 10 games to climb to No. 2 in the national rankings. Richt?s team beat 13th-ranked Va. Tech by a 28-10 count as a two-point home underdog, and then followed up the next week with a 41-8 pimpslap of undefeated and third-ranked Notre Dame as a 3.5-point home ?dog.

However, in its regular-season finale at Pittsburgh in a cold-weather game, the Panthers captured a 24-14 win as 11.5-point home underdogs. After the loss to Clemson, the ?Canes dropped a 34-24 decision to Wisconsin at the Orange Bowl.

The three-game losing streak to end of the year didn?t erase all the good that was done last year. Richt secured a third straight highly-ranked recruiting class.

QB Malik Rosier returns for his senior campaign. In his first season as the full-time starter in ?17, Rosier completed 54.0 percent of his passes for 3,120 yards with a 26/14 TD-INT ratio. He can make plays with his legs, too, rushing for 619 yards and five TDs (before subtracting 151 yards from sacks).

Michael Irvin II came out of spring practice listed as the starter at TE, but he sustained a season-ending knee injury in July. Irvin won?t be around, nor will last year?s top two wideouts in Braxton Berrios and Christopher Herndon. Nevertheless, UM?s WRs are ranked second in Steele?s ACC Unit Rankings.

Junior Ahmmon Richards is a second-team preseason All-ACC choice. He was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2016, but his season was cut short in ?17 when he went down with an injury in his team?s seventh game. Richards had 24 receptions for 439 yards and three TDs last year. Sophomore WR Jeff Thomas made four starts as a true freshman, making 17 catches for 374 yards and two TDs.

RB Travis Homer took over as the starting RB when Mark Walton went down with a season-ending injury in late September. Homer ran for a team-high 966 yards and eight TDs while averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He earned second-team All-ACC honors in ?17 and is a preseason second-team All-ACC choice this year. Homer also had 18 catches for 219 yards and one TD.

Homer will get pushed for touches by true freshman RB Lorenzo Lingard, a five-star recruit who enrolled early and showed his talent during spring practice. The UM RBs are ranked fourth in the ACC by Steele and 20th nationally. Meanwhile, the WRs are second in the ACC and 17th in the country, and the o-line is fifth in the conference and 25th nationally.

Miami?s defense allowed only 21.0 PPG last season. This unit brings back its top-five tacklers. The LBs are ranked No. 1 in the ACC and seventh nationally by Steele. The secondary is ranked tops in the league and ninth in the nation, and the d-line is third-best in the ACC and 14th in the country.

Four Miami players are on Steele?s preseason first-team All-ACC defense. These include LBs Shaq Quarterman and Michael Pinckney, in addition to CB Michael Jackson and safety Jaquan Johnson. Junior DE Joe Jackson, who was a third-team All-ACC selection in ?17, is a preseason second-team All-ACC choice.

Johnson produced 96 tackles, four interceptions and one pick-six, four PBU, two TFL?s, one sack, one QB hurry and three forced fumbles. Quarterman recorded 83 tackles, five PBU, 4.5 TFL?s, four QB hurries and 2.5 sacks. Jackson led the ?Canes in sacks (6.5) and QB hurries (6).

Miami has won three straight neutral-site openers dating back to 1984. Since 1986, the ?Canes are 19-6 vs. current SEC schools, but they are only 3-9 vs. LSU in 12 all-time meetings. They went just 3-6 ATS in nine games as favorites in ?17.

No. 25 LSU off and running with 33-17 win over No. 8 Miami
September 2, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Nick Brossette ran for 125 yards with two touchdowns, grad transfer quarterback Joe Burrow won his first college start and No. 25 LSU made an opening statement with a 33-17 victory over No. 8 Miami on Sunday night.

Once the game started, the Hurricanes never really backed the bravado they showed in a feisty exchange of words and some shoving between the teams during warmups about 75 minutes before kickoff.

LSU led 27-3 by halftime after Jacob Phillips returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

''Regardless of what's out there and what people say, we believe in each other in that room, and we proved it tonight,'' Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said about the perception that his team was the underdog.

Cole Tracy, a kicker last season at Division II Assumption College, made four field goals in his Tigers debut. His 54-yarder, which tied a school record, just skimmed over the crossbar and made it 33-3 late in the third quarter.

Miami, which has lost four games in a row since a 10-0 start last season, never got to celebrate with that gaudy turnover chain that comes out when the Hurricanes get a takeaway.

''We certainly had some things go well and some things not well,'' said Miami coach Mark Richt, going into his third season at his alma mater. ''A lot of self-inflicted wounds, not to take anything away from what LSU did. They beat us soundly.''

When LSU fumbled on the opening drive, receiver Dee Anderson managed to recover after taking a shot to the head and losing the ball briefly at the end of an 11-yard catch for a first down. The Hurricanes instead lost starting cornerback Trajan Bandy when he was ejected for targeting.

The Hurricanes thought they had a fumble return for a touchdown later in the first quarter, but a replay review determined it was an incomplete pass by Burrow instead of a fumble.

LSU went ahead to stay in the final minute of the first quarter after Burrow, who played in 10 games for Ohio State the past two years, changed a play at the line of scrimmage. Brossette then took an inside handoff and went untouched down the middle of the field for a 50-yard TD run that snapped a 3-3 tie.

''We saw it in camp, I thought he was our most physical back,'' Orgeron said.

Burrow finished 11 of 24 for 140 yards.

''Execute, do what the gameplan says,'' Burrow said ''Really all that was on my mind was going out and playing with my brothers and executing at a high level.''

Brossette's 1-yard run made it 17-3 on an 11-play drive when LSU twice converted fourth-and-1 - on a 2-yard gain by Brossette near midfield, and when Miami jumped offside. He had only 96 yards rushing all last season as a junior.

THE TAKEAWAY

Miami: Malik Rosier had a record-setting season last year with his 31 touchdowns (26 passing, five rushing) and 3,588 yards, but had some of the same issues that plagued him in losing the final three games. Rosier was 15 of 35 for 259 yards with two interceptions against LSU. The Hurricanes were down 33-3 before his 3-yard TD keeper and 32-yard TD pass to Brian Hightower in the fourth quarter. In the losing streak to end last season, he had three total TDs (all passing) with five interceptions.

LSU: An impressive start despite a somewhat ragged fourth quarter for the Tigers, who had three other division foes from the brutal SEC West ranked ahead of them in the preseason Top 25. After their home opener, they will get an early chance to show if they are for real when they go to No. 9 Auburn in two weeks.

IMPRESSIVE CATCHES

Jeff Thomas led Miami with five catches for 132 yards, including an impressive 1-handed grab along the sideline for a 16-yard gain on a drive in the first quarter that led to a Hurricanes field goal. Thomas had another highlight play in the third quarter, when he went high in the air to make a two-handed catch in front of defenders along the sideline.

AT HOME IN JERRYWORLD

LSU is 4-0 in its games played in AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. All of those wins have been again Top 25 opponents. That includes three season openers and a win in the 2011 Cotton Bowl over Texas A&M).

UP NEXT

Miami: Home opener vs. Savannah State on Saturday.

LSU: Home opener vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.

Heisman Betting Update
September 3, 2018
By Tom Wilkinson

Heisman Watch

The first week of college football is basically in the books, as just the game between Virginia Tech and Florida State remains. The first week saw many of the top players get off to good starts in their bid for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, but one of the favorites did not.

Let?s take a look how the favorites did in Week 1, some new top contenders, and a few players to keep an eye on as the season develops.

Preseason Favorites

Before the season began there were three players listed at Heisman Trophy odds of 10-1 or less. Those players were Stanford?s Bryce Love, Alabama?s Tua Tagovailoa and Wisconsin?s Jonathan Taylor.

Bryce Love
Have you heard the saying in golf that you can?t win a tournament on the first day but that you can lose it? That was the case with Love who probably lost any chance to win the Heisman in Week 1. He had a total of 29 yards on 18 carries with no touchdowns against San Diego State. It will be almost impossible for Love to come back from that disaster and win the award.

Tua Tagovailoa
The Crimson Tide are the No. 1 team in the country and despite what head coach Nick Saban has said, Tagovailoa is the clear starter and Jalen Hurts is the backup. Tua was great in the first half, going 11-for-15 for 195 yards with two touchdowns. He also rushed for 26 yards and one TD. He finished 12-for-16 with 227 passing yards.

Jonathan Taylor
The Badgers running back got off to a strong start in his bid for the Heisman, as he rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries and had two long touchdown runs. The Badgers rolled over Western Kentucky and Taylor sat out most of the fourth quarter.

Three More Top Contenders

Will Grier

You can make a case that the new favorite to win the Heisman Trophy after Week 1 is West Virginia quarterback Will Grier. He had his first career 400 yard passing game in a win over Tennessee. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 429 yards and five touchdowns.

Dwayne Haskins
The Buckeyes quarterback completed 22 of 30 passes for 313 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also ran twice for 24. It was the most passing yards and most touchdown passes by an Ohio State quarterback in his first start.

McKenzie Milton
The UCF quarterback did nothing to hurt his cause in Week 1, as he threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Connecticut. He also had seven rushes for 50 yards. The Knights don?t have a high profile, but Milton is definitely on the radar of NFL scouts and he is in the conversation for early Heisman consideration.

Keep an Eye On

Rodney Anderson

The Sooners have a top running back who could work his way into the Heisman Trophy discussion. Anderson had 100 yards and two touchdowns in just five carries in Oklahoma?s opener. The Sooners were not tested in a 63-14 win over Florida Atlantic and Anderson didn?t even play in the second half.

Trayveon Williams

The Texas A&M Aggies are going to run the ball a lot this season with Jimbo Fisher as head coach and Williams is going to get a lot of work. He ran for 240 yards in the season opening win over Northwestern State. If Williams has a big game against Clemson next week he will be on everyone?s Heisman contender list.

Trace McSorley
The Nittany Lions nearly lost to Appalachian State but they pulled out a win in overtime. McSorley was okay for the Nittany Lions, as he completed 21 of 36 passes for 230 yards and 1 touchdown. He did run for 53 yards on the ground on 12 carries. McSorley will have a chance this season to make an impression in big games, but he needs to play better than he did in Week 1 to get into the discussion.

Nick Bosa
The Ohio State defensive end played really well in a win over Oregon State, as he had four tackles and two sacks. He also had two forced fumbles and scored the first touchdown of his career. He was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year last season and he plays for one of the top teams in the country. He is the brother of San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa. The problem that Nick Bosa has is that no defensive player has won the Heisman Trophy since 1997 when Charles Woodson won the award.

Jackson's 2 TD passes help Virginia Tech handle FSU 24-3
September 3, 2018

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Virginia Tech and coach Justin Fuente notched another season-opening victory against a ranked team.

Florida State and Willie Taggart delivered the program's most inept offensive performance at home in a decade, hardly the start Taggart had hoped for with the Seminoles.

Needless to say, it was easy to tell which Atlantic Coast Conference heavyweight looked like a title contender Monday night.

Josh Jackson threw two touchdown passes, one early and another late, and the 20th-ranked Hokies handled No. 19 Florida State 24-3 in the rain to spoil Taggart's debut in Tallahassee.

''It certainly wasn't perfect by any means, but to play as intelligent as we did, I am proud,'' said Fuente, who beat then-No. 22 West Virginia to open 2017.

Florida State looked dysfunctional and disorganized most of the night, finishing with five turnovers, a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and a missed field goal. It was the first time the Seminoles failed to score a touchdown at home since losing 12-3 to Wake Forest on Sept. 20, 2008.

''Tough loss,'' said Taggart, a former head coach at Oregon, South Florida and Western Kentucky. ''Not what any of us expected. We didn't play a good game at all. It was very sloppy. It's hard to win a football game with five turnovers.

''We have to play much better. That's on all of us, starting with me.''

The Hokies were good at the start and even better with the game on the line.

Jackson connected with Eric Kumah over the middle with less than 6 minutes to play. Kumah bounded through three arm tackles and raced 49 yards for the game-sealing score . Jackson also opened the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Damon Hazelton in the corner of the end zone. Jackson lofted a pass that cornerback Levonta Taylor looked lost trying to defend.

Jackson completed 16 of 26 passes for 207 yards. Kumah finished with four catches for 86 yards.

Kumah also scored on special teams, scooping up the team's 75th blocked punt since 1987 . It was fitting since former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, known for his ''Beamerball'' brand of special teams, was on hand as an honorary captain.

The outcome probably shouldn't have been too surprising since the Hokies finished 9-4 in Justin Fuente's second season and returned a number of key players, including Jackson. The Seminoles are coming off a 7-6 season and are still getting acclimated to a new coaching staff and new schemes on both sides of the ball.

''I saw a lot of guys ticked off in the locker room, a lot of guys crying,'' Taggart said. ''We'll see how guys come back and respond. ... You have to do it quick.''

Little went right for Florida State all night:

- Receiver Nyqwan Murray fumbled on the team's opening possession, giving Virginia Tech great field position and leading to a field goal.

- Ricky Aguayo missed a 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

- Murray appeared to score on a 30-yard pass from Deondre Francois later in the second. Instead of challenging the call, the Seminoles hurried to the line and were flagged for a false start. FSU had to settle for a short field goal.

- Logan Tyler had his punt blocked by Chris Cunningham at the 3-yard line. Kumah scooped it up and scored, putting the Hokies up 17-3.

- Taggart went for it on fourth-and-3 at the Virginia Tech 21. Francois' pass fell incomplete.

The Seminoles essentially provided huge assists on both of Tech's touchdowns and cost themselves another 10 points.

''We didn't do a whole lot of adjusting,'' longtime Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. ''We fit up the speed reads and created negative plays.''

Virginia Tech had a chance to make it a three-score game late in the third quarter, but Fuente went for it on fourth down at the 1. Steven Peoples was stopped short of the goal line, keeping it a 14-point game and giving the Seminoles life.

FSU looked like it might cut the lead in half after Cam Akers broke loose for an 84-yard gain midway through the fourth, but Akers and fellow running back Amir Rasul botched a handoff in the backfield and wasted the scoring opportunity.

THE TAKEAWAY

Virginia Tech: It wasn't pretty for the Hokies, but some of the struggles were expected considering they opened the season on the road against a ranked opponent. Jackson played mistake-free football, which is always a good start.

Florida State: The Seminoles were downright dismal on offense. Francois, returning from a knee injury that cost him most of last season, completed 22 of 35 passes for 233 yards behind a shaky offensive line. He threw three interceptions, was sacked five times and pressured even more often.

LEGENDARY CAPTAINS

Retired coaches Beamer (Virginia Tech) and Bobby Bowden (Florida State) served as honorary captains for the first meeting between the two schools since 2012. The Hokies and Seminoles last played in Tallahassee in 2008.

RETIRED JERSEY

Two-time All-American receiver Peter Warrick had his No. 9 jersey retired at halftime. It was the 11th number retired in program history.
