Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday??.

13) Texas 50, Kansas 48? Les Miles is going to build a winner in Lawrence; this was the first game as offensive coordinator for Brent Dearmon, who was a head coach at the NAIA level LY.

Texas kicked a 33-yard FG at the gun to win this game, but good things are ahead for Kansas.

12) Oregon 35, Washington 31? Huskies led 28-14 with 9:00 left in third quarter, but Oregon rallied back for the win, scoring winning TD with 5:10 left. Fun game to watch.

11) Illinois 24, Wisconsin 23? Badgers hadn?t trailed in any game this season until kid from Illinois made a 39-yard FG at the gun. This is the biggest pointspread upset so far this year.

10) Oklahoma 52, West Virginia 14? Austin Kendall is WVU?s quarterback:
? As a freshman in 2016, threw 16 passes as a backup QB for Oklahoma.
? Red-shirted the 2017 season.
? Last year, he threw four passes as a backup QB for the Sooners.

Kendall graduated from Oklahoma in three years; he is working on two Masters? degrees. When he decided to go to West Virginia, the Sooners tried to block the transfer, because WVU is a big X rival of the Sooners, but they eventually relented.

9) Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin posted a pic on Twitter showing three officials walking on the field, all using seeing eye dogs. Thats going to be an expensive tweet.

8) Florida 38, South Carolina 27? Gators? QB Trask, who didn?t start for his high school team, threw for 200 yards, four TD?s as Florida improves to 7-1 on a rainy day in Columbia.

7) Upsets of the Week:
? Illinois (+30.5) 24, Wisconsin 23
? Vanderbilt (+21) 21, Missouri 14
? Georgia Tech (+18) 28, Miami 21 (OT)
? Oregon State (+10.5) 21, California 17
? Eastern Michigan (+10) 34, Western Michigan 27
? Baylor (+8) 45, Oklahoma State 27

6) Baylor 45, Oklahoma State 27? Matt Rhule went 28-23 coaching Temple (20-7 the last two years); he is 15-17 at Baylor, but 7-0 this year- the guy can coach.

5) Georgia Tech 28, Miami 21 OT? Yellow Jackets scored a defensive TD, scored on a fake punt and blocked a 25-yard FG near the end of regulation. Hurricanes missed three FG?s in all, all of them 34 yards or shorter.

Miami desperately needs to recruit a kicker, or find a soccer player on campus who can fill the void; they?ve missed six FG?s of 34 or less yards this season, plus two PAT?s.

4) Ohio U 45, Kent State 38? Game was 24-all at half; Golden Flashes (20-1) cashed in at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas, scoring the first TD of the day. Yes, you can bet on that.

Ohio U had a great onside kick in this game; their kicker just drilled the ball straight ahead, it hit the Kent State player 1o yards away in the helmet, popped in the air, and #81 on Ohio caught it.

3) Virginia Tech 43, North Carolina 41 OT? Starting in the 5th overtime, teams alternate 2-point conversion tries to decide the winner; I think this was the first time it actually happened.

2) Appalachian State 52, UL-Monroe 7? 6-0 Mountaineers are ranked #24 in country, with a win at North Carolina. Not often a Sun Belt team gets ranked nationally.

1) Louisiana Tech 45, Southern Mississippi 30? Total on this game was 58.5; always helps the over when the opening kickoff gets run back for a TD. Tech is 5-1 vs I-A opponents, averaging 45 ppg.

South Florida was roughed up by Navy, 35-3, as the Bulls slipped to 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS. The Middies have quietly posted a 5-1 SU/ATS mark at the halfway point. ... Memphis tuned up a very good Tulane, 47-17, as Kenneth Gainwell became the first player to receive for 200 yards and rush for 100 yards in a single game since Troy Edwards (La. Tech) in 1997. The Tigers improved to 6-1 SU/5-2 ATS, and the 'over' has cashed in four straight. ... Cincinnati picked up a 24-13 win over Tulsa, improving to 6-1 SU/5-2 ATS. The 'under' has cashed in five of seven for the Bearcats.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (ACC)
-- Georgia Tech pulled off one of the biggest stunners of the day at Miami-Florida, winning 28-21 in overtime. The Hurricanes have been so hard to figure out. They surprised Virginia last week, a Top 25 team, then lost to a team they were favored by 18 points. Miami is now 3-4 SU/ATS after opening in the Top 25 rankings. ... Miami will travel to Pittsburgh next week. The Panthers won at Syracuse by a 28-20 score for their fifth cover in the past six games, as they keep their Coastal Division hopes alive. The Panthers are a perfect 3-0 ATS on the road this season. ... Florida State slipped up at Wake Forest, falling 22-20, as the Seminoles just can't seem to get on track, and stay on track. The Seminoles are now 3-4 SU/2-4-1 ATS. Meanwhile, Wake recovered from last week's 62-59 loss at home to Louisville, moving to 6-1 SU/3-3-1 ATS. ... Speaking of the Cards, they were no match for Clemson, falling to the Tigers 45-10. After a 21-20 near-miss at UNC, the Tigers are 2-0 ATS, averaging 45.0 PPG, while the defense has yielded 14 or fewer points in six of seven.

BIG TEN
-- Illinois was the big story of the day, as they upended Wisconsin, 24-23 for the first signature win of the Lovie Smith era in Champaign. They won outright as 30.5-point underdogs at home, cashing at +2500 on the moneyline. It was the second-largest upset over the past 40 seasons, and largest since Northwestern beat Minnesota outright as a 32-point underdog in 1982. ... Speaking of Minnesota, there were no upset of the Gophers this week. They won 42-7 at Rutgers to improve to 7-0 SU. After opening the season 0-2-1 ATS, they have rattled off four straight covers, too. ... Michigan earned the cover at Penn State, but the Wolverines had a touchdown slip through a receiver's hands late which would have given them a chance to tie or go for two and win. The Nittany Lions are quietly 7-0 SU, but just 4-3 ATS. The 'over' result was the first since Sept. 7 after four straight 'under' results. ... Indiana picked up a 34-28 win over Maryland 34-28, in a result which was a small bad beat (see below).

BIG 12
-- The Kansas-Texas game wasn't supposed to be one of the better ones of the day, as the Longhorns were favored by 21. But it was a good ol' fashioned Texas shootout, with a total of 50 points in the fourth quarter alone. When the dust cleared, it was Texas winning 50-48 in a great game at DKR. The Jayhawks have covered back-to-back games against Oklahoma and Texas after starting out 1-4 ATS in the first five. ... Texas Tech was involved in another bad beat this week, and it was the total yet again. Iowa State won the game 34-24, going 3-0 SU and 2-0-1 ATS across the past three outings. ... As far as the Sooners were concerned, they waylaid West Virginia by a 52-14 score as the 'over' connected. The Sooners covered the largest spread of the day in college football. ... Baylor kept their record unblemished with a solid road win at Oklahoma State, 45-27. The Cowboys opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown, giving them a 27-24 lead, but the Bears stormed back with 21 unanswered points. The Bears are 7-0 SU, but just 4-3 ATS.

CONFERENCE USA
-- Western Kentucky started the season with a loss at home to FCS Central Arkansas, and it looked like it would be a lost season for the Hilltoppers. They have turned things around big time. WKU topped Charlotte 30-14 to improve to 4-0 SU/ATS in conference play. The 'under' is also a perfect 4-0 over the past four outings for WKU. ... Florida International scratched out a 32-17 win over UTEP, as the Miners managed a cover. FIU has won three straight, although they're just 2-5 ATS overall. The Miners are 0-5 SU against FBS opponents, but they have covered two of the past three. The 'under' is 3-0 in the past three for UTEP. ... Louisiana Tech fell at Texas to open the season, but they have won six in a row while covering four of the past five. ... UAB rolled to a 38-14 win over Old Dominion, 38-14. The Blazers have won and covered three in a row, and they are 5-1 ATS over the past six outings.

MID-AMERICAN (MAC)
-- Toledo was stunned last week, and this week they were short 'dogs at Ball State. The Cardinals rolled up a 52-14 win over the reeling Rockets, who suddenly find themselves 4-3 SU/3-4 ATS, and not feeling very good about their season after a hot start. ... Kent State fell 45-38 in a high-scoring affair at Ohio. The Golden Flashes are just 3-4 SU, but they're a solid 3-1 ATS across the past four, with KSU going 3-0 ATS inside the MAC. ... Miami-Ohio posted a straight-up win over Northern Illinois as short 'dogs, winning 27-24. The Redhawks are 3-4 SU/ATS overall, but they have going 3-0 SU at home, and 2-0 ATS in two games against FBS opponents while the 'over' is also 3-0 in their three home outings. ... Buffalo made it interesting, but they won and covered at Akron by a 21-0 count. The Zips slipped to 0-7 SU/ATS, while the Bulls are 3-4 SU, but a solid 3-1 ATS over the past four outings. ... Eastern Michigan surprised Western Michigan by a 34-27 count in Ypsilanti, winning outright as 8.5-point underdogs. The Eagles are now 4-3 SU, but this was their first cover since Sept. 14, an outright win at Illinois.

MOUNTAIN WEST
-- San Diego State scratched out a 27-17 road win over San Jose State, picking up their sixth win in seven tries, while covering for the third straight outing, and fifth in six contests. The Aztecs have been a favorite of total bettors, too, as the 'under' is 6-1 in seven games for SDSU. ... Nevada got waffled at Utah State, falling 36-10. The Aggies were able to cover the 21-point number, as USU is now 4-2 SU/ATS, including 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS in three MWC battles. ... Boise State had their hopes of a New Year's Day bowl game dented by BYU, falling 28-25 in Provo. The Broncos slipped to 6-1 SU, while going 4-2-1 ATS overall. The 'over' has hit in consecutive games for the first time this season for BSU. ... Air Force wasn't distracted in the Islands, winning 56-26 at Hawaii despite losing their starting quarterback, Donald Hammond, to a shoulder injury early on. The Falcons are now 5-2 SU/4-3 ATS, and the 'over' has cashed in four in a row for USAFA.

PAC-12
-- Oregon State surprised California, 21-17. The Beavers have covered five of the past six games overall. ... Arizona suffered a 41-14 road loss at USC, as the Wildcats slipped to 4-3 SU and just 2-4-1 ATS. The Trojans suffered all kinds of injuries, but depth was on display. USC is 4-3 SU/ATS, including 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in four games at home, while going 0-3 SU/1-2 ATS in three road games. They're on the road at Colorado next Friday. ... The Buffaloes were hammered by a 41-10 score at Washington State, as the Cougars finally got back on track. It was their first cover since Aug. 31 after an 0-5 ATS skid. ... Oregon picked up a 35-31 win at Washington, as the kept the conference's bleak playoff chances alive. The Ducks have won six in a row since falling to Auburn in a neutral-site battle on Aug. 31, and they're 3-1 ATS over the past four outings.

SOUTHEASTERN (SEC)
-- Alabama lost QB Tua Tagavailoa to a high-ankle sprain, and head coach Nick Saban said after the game that he expects Tua to miss "one to two weeks". That means QB Mac Jones will start against Arkansas next week, so watch that line carefully. The Crimson Tide won 35-13 over Tennessee even without Tua for a good chunk of the game. The Tide are now 7-0 SU, but just 3-4 ATS, and they have failed to cover consecutive games all season. ... LSU roughed up Mississippi State by a 36-13 count in Starkville, keeping their record unblemished and on a collision course with 'Bama on Nov. 2. The Tigers are 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS. The Bulldogs are 0-3 SU/ATS over the past three outings. ... Texas A&M found a way to get it done at Mississippi, 24-17. The Aggies scored a late TD with 2:34 to go, making it 24-14. Lucky for A&M bettors, the Rebels elected to kick a field goal with :26 left to make it a one-possession game, and try for an onside kick. They didn't get it. ... Missouri was stunned at Vanderbilt, as the Commodores won outright as 21-point 'dogs (+1000 ML). It's the same Vandy team which was hammered by UNLV last week.

SUN BELT
-- Georgia State took care of Army 28-21, as the Panthers are now 5-2 SU and 4-1-2 ATS overall. That's one win away from bowl eligibility. Their only losses have been a blowout at Western Michigan, and a triple-overtime loss at Texas State. ... Appalachian State topped Louisiana-Monroe, 52-7, and their hopes of a New Year's Day bowl are alive and well, helped out by Boise's loss. The Mountaineers are now 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS, covering four straight. ... If you had the 'under' in the Coastal Carolina-Georgia Southern game, condolensces. See below.

Bad Beats
-- With a total of 57 on the board, Iowa State held a 34-17 lead over Texas Tech with 1:30 to go. However, QB Jeff Duffey hit T.J. Vasher for a short touchdown pass to push the total 'over'. The Red Raiders were involved in a bad beat total for the second straight week, although this one wasn't nearly as raw as last week.

-- The Coastal Carolina-Ga. Southern game had a total of just 45. That looked super highin the fourth quarter, with Coastal trailing 10-7 midway through the final period. They booted a field goal to make it 10-10. The teams went to overtime, and suddenly the offensive spigot was turned on, as the teams exchanged touchdowns in both the first and second overtimes, to push the total over. Eventually it was GSU pulling out the 30-27 victory. You'll definitely be seeing this one on Scott Van Pelt's segment.

-- Indiana was up 31-28 with just under three minutes to go at Maryland. They kicked the field goal with 2:49 to go, serving up Terps side bettors a slight bad beat -- although really, it was just a backdoor cover.

-- With 2:27 to go, Auburn scored a meaningless touchdown in terms of the result. They were up 44-10 with 2:27 to go before scoring a touchdown to make it 51-10. If you were holding an 'under' (55) ticket, that was bad news.

-- In the Middle Tennessee-North Texas game, there were 53 points on the board with a total of 59.5 on the board. The Blue Raiders scored a touchdown to tie the game 30-30. Total bettors were wishing they went for two, and missed it. Eventually UNT kicked a field goal to win it 33-30 at the gun, crushing anyone who had a Blue Raiders ML ticket.

-- Over bettors in Charlotte-Western Kentucky looked to be in good shape with 44 points on the board through three quarters. They needed just four points, but received a scoreless fourth quarter instead.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 8
October 20, 2019
By Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won?t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the eighth big weekend of the college football season in mid-October.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Troy (-18) 37, South Alabama 13: This Wednesday Sun Belt game was a 10-10 tie just before halftime before Troy managed a pair of field goals in the final 68 seconds. The lead was just 10 through three quarters as the underdog was promising on a spread that trickled past the key number of 17 to 17? and even a few closing lines hit 18. The game changed dramatically with a 29-yard interception return touchdown that suddenly put Troy up by exactly 17. South Alabama appeared in position to get a score to keep the underdog in position to cover in most scenarios but an intentional grounding call pushed the Jaguars out of scoring range on a fourth quarter drive and Troy burned more than eight minutes of clock and eventually added seven more to lead by 24. South Alabama would reach the Troy 36-yard-line in the final minutes looking to get back within 17 for a narrow cover but a fumble ended the threat.

UL-Lafayette (-5?) 37, Arkansas State 20: The spread on the road favorite dropped in the hours before kickoff Thursday night but Louisiana led by 14 at halftime. The Red Wolves added a third quarter field goal and an early fourth quarter touchdown to get within the number down by just four. The Ragin? Cajuns responded with a nice kickoff return and added a touchdown five minutes later to lead by 10, actually missing on the PAT. Needing to go for it on fourth down near midfield Arkansas State fell short and gave Louisiana good field position and two plays later they hit the end zone for a 37-20 edge and for good measure got an interception to hold off a late scoring threat from Arkansas State.

Fresno State (-16?) 56, UNLV 27: Fresno State led by just eight late in the third quarter but a fumble return touchdown put the Bulldogs in range to cover the home favorite spread that fluctuated back and forth from extremes of -13? up to -16?.The Bulldogs would then take over in the fourth quarter with three touchdowns in the span of fewer than three minutes of game clock thanks to more UNLV turnovers, with eventually a 5-0 edge in takeaways leading to the lopsided final margin for Fresno State.

Clemson (-24?) 45, Louisville 10: A touchdown just before halftime put Clemson up 17-3 after a tight first half. The highly ranked Tigers only added seven points in the third to lead by 17 but posted two quick touchdowns early in the fourth to pull away before the teams traded late scores. Clemson had two turnovers but also posted a 551-263 edge in yards.

Ohio (-9) 45, Kent State 31: This contest turned into a MAC shootout with a 24-24 tie at the half before the pace slowed with Kent State tying the game with 10 minutes to go at 31-31. Ohio would score two touchdowns in the span of just over three minutes late in the game to pull ahead by 14 but Kent State would get a late score to get back within the number with 31 seconds to go on a 3rd down play, after converting a 4th-and-7 on its own side of the 50 earlier in the drive, with a stop there ending the game and holding the favorite cover for the Bobcats.

Florida (-3?) 38, South Carolina 27: The Gamecocks looked poised for a second straight upset in the SEC East with a 20-17 lead into the fourth quarter. Florida scored to go up by four and the Gamecocks had a fumble on its next possession and then was stopped trying to convert a 4th-and-2 with the Gators responding with touchdowns, in both instances while getting away with potential penalties. The Gamecocks got back within 11 with about two minutes remaining and actually had the ball back across midfield in the final seconds but Florida escaped with an 11-point win despite an even contest that saw the Gamecocks post 33 more yards and a solid rushing edge but with the officials squarely in the spotlight.

Kansas State (+4?) 24, TCU 17: A blocked punt set-up an early Kansas State score and that proved to be the difference in this Big XII clash despite substantial production edges for TCU. Gary Patterson opted to punt in Kansas State territory several times in the game and his conservative game plan would bite in the end as Kansas State put together a 95-yard touchdown drive late in the game to break a 17-17 tie, a drive in which Kansas State more than doubled its rushing total for the game on one 61-yard scramble and wound up converting a big 4th down instead of a medium-range field goal try. TCU reached the Kansas State 36-yard line before a costly sack made the down-and-distance too much to overcome and Kansas State won despite a massive rushing deficit in a turnover free game.

Georgia Southern (-7) 30, Coastal Carolina 27: The box score doesn?t look like an overtime game but Coastal Carolina held Georgia Southern off the scoreboard in the second half and got a fourth quarter field goal to force extra time. After matching touchdowns Georgia Southern went first in overtime #2 and scored a touchdown in one play to give a glimmer of hope to those on the favorite spread commonly at -6?. It took a lengthy drive and a 4th down conversion but the Chanticleers were able to even up the score. In the third period they settled for three and Georgia Southern converted a big third down and got into the end zone on the next play.

Buffalo (-18) 21, Akron 0: To say offense was tough to come by would be quite the understatement in this MAC game as Buffalo scored a first quarter touchdown and then neither offense scored again with total yardage running at 254-196. Buffalo had two fumble return touchdowns including a fourth quarter recovery that was enough to get past the heavy road favorite spread.

Oregon (-2?) 35, Washington 31: These Pac-12 North powers provided another great game as Washington held a 31-21 lead late in the third quarter. Oregon connected for a touchdown as time expired on the third, still trailing by three as a slight road favorite with the spread coming down from -3 by kickoff. Washington was held to back-to-back 3-and-outs as a Ducks program not often known for defense has led on that side of the ball this season. That set-up a season-defining drive for Justin Herbert and the Ducks, going in front by four with five minutes to go. Washington was a serious threat late but a sack and a penalty pushed the Huskies to eventually face 3rd-and-23 and while they got a big chunk to make it a manageable 4th-and-3, Jacob Eason fell incomplete with Washington just outside of reasonable field goal range as Oregon escaped to keep the Pac-12 alive nationally while narrowly cashing the favorite tickets.

Minnesota (-29) 42, Rutgers 7: The Gophers are now the last team standing in the Big Ten West now with a 7-0 start with the past five wins coming primarily against backup quarterbacks. Rutgers wasn?t a threat to win this game but the heavy underdog cover was in play with only a 21-0 deficit heading into the fourth. Minnesota scored three times in fewer than three minutes in the fourth quarter including an interception return touchdown as a late Rutgers touchdown to eliminate the shutout wasn?t enough.

Utah (-16) 21, Arizona State 3: The Utes turned in a dominant defensive performance but covering a more than two touchdown spread requires points and Utah led just 14-3 through three quarters. A muffed punt with just over five minutes remaining handed the Utes the field position it needed and on first down Zack Moss rushed for a 32-yard score to slip past the number.

Louisiana Tech (+2?) 45, Southern Miss 30: The Golden Eagles led 27-17 late in the third quarter but Louisiana Tech went 90 yards in just over a minute to climb within three as a slight home underdog. The Bulldogs took over in the fourth quarter with back-to-back scores and added a late exclamation point with an interception return touchdown to create a misleading final result in Conference USA play.

Baylor (+6) 45, Oklahoma State 27: The Bears trailed by three in the fourth quarter of this game but scored 21 points in four minutes to storm past Oklahoma State in stunning fashion in Stillwater, moving to 4-0 in Big XII play.

Texas A&M (-6) 24, Mississippi 17: Ole Miss had a substantial yardage edge and a 14-10 third quarter lead but a 62-yard fumble return touchdown shifted the trajectory of the game putting the Aggies in front heading into the fourth quarter. Mississippi had a missed field goal and an interception on its next two possessions and on a short field Texas A&M added a fourth quarter touchdown to go up by 10. In the final minute the Rebels reached the red zone but opted to kick a field goal down two scores and did not come up with the on-side kick for a brutal narrow loss for anyone on the home underdog at +6 of +6?

Virginia Tech (+4) 43, North Carolina 41:
North Carolina led early but the game was tied in the fourth quarter 24-24. Both teams traded touchdowns in the span of 40 seconds late in the fourth quarter before overtime was needed. Field goals were exchanged and then North Carolina went first in OT #2 getting seven to give the road favorite a great chance to escape. On 4th-and-3 the Hokies not only converted but got the tying score. The third and fourth overtimes featured four missed field goals and the new overtime rules went into place for the first time, trading two-point conversion attempts instead of full drives after the fourth session, effectively sealing the spread win for the underdog Hokies. Both teams failed in the conversions in OT #5. The Tar Heels came up empty again in the sixth session before the Hokies sealed the upset.

Penn State (-7?) 28, Michigan 21: A more fascinating statistical game will be tough to find as Penn State jumped out to a 21-0 lead halfway through the second quarter and then wound up held to 85 yards the rest of the game. Michigan drew within seven with a late third quarter score but Penn State would connect on one more big play that they needed with a 53-yard touchdown pass early in the final frame. Michigan answered quickly to get back within seven and within the underdog spread that was commonly +9 before falling back to +7?. Michigan?s defense got a 3-and-out, but the offense couldn?t convert reaching 1st-and-goal and eventually coming up short on 4th down at the 3-yard-line, despite posting a 417-283 total yardage edge and a 26-14 first down edge.

'Bama QB Tagovailoa has ankle procedure
October 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had a procedure for a high ankle sprain and will miss Saturday's game against Arkansas.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban says Tagovailoa had what's known as a ''tightrope'' procedure on his right ankle Sunday. He says it's the same injury the 2018 Heisman Trophy runner-up suffered in the Southeastern Conference championship game last season, just to the other ankle.

Saban predicted ''a full and speedy recovery'' for Tagovailoa. He was hurt in the second quarter of Alabama's 35-13 win over Tennessee.

No. 1 Alabama has an open date before facing No. 2 LSU on Nov. 9. Tagovailoa promised teammates he'd be back for that game.

He played in the playoff semifinal game against Oklahoma 28 days after the injury last season.

Ohio State jumps Clemson in AP Top 25
October 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

Ohio State edged past Clemson to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll and Wisconsin dropped to 13th after being upset ahead of its showdown with the Buckeyes.

Alabama remained No. 1 on Sunday in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 24 first-place votes. No. 2 LSU held its place and received 16 first-place votes. The Buckeyes had 13 first-place votes and No. 4 Clemson, the preseason No. 1 team and defending national champion, received nine.

The Buckeyes and Tigers both were coming off conference blowouts on the road. Ohio State beat Northwestern 52-3 Friday night. Clemson defeated Louisville 45-10.

The point margin between the No. 1 and No. 4 in this week's Top 25 is 78, the smallest it has been this season. Alabama received 1,486 points while LSU had 1,462, Ohio State had 1,429 and Clemson had 1,408.

Oklahoma remained No. 5, but Penn State moved up to sixth after Wisconsin's first loss of the season. The Badgers were beaten Saturday by 30-point underdog Illinois in the season's most significant upset so far.

Florida, Notre Dame, Auburn and Georgia round out the top 10, giving the Southeastern Conference five of the top 10 teams.

---

POLL POINTS

Preseason No. 1 teams commonly relinquish the top spot without losing, but the extent of Clemson's fall is unusual. The last preseason No. 1 to drop as far or farther without a loss or tie was Oklahoma in 1977. The Sooners slipped from first to fifth after opening the season with a 25-23 victory over Vanderbilt. Oklahoma started climbing the very next week and reached No. 1 again before losing its fifth game of the season to Texas in mid-October.

One has to go all the way back to 1971 to find a similar drop to Clemson's for a preseason No. 1. Notre Dame started that season top ranked and won its first five games, slipping to No. 7 while doing so. Maybe voters' suspicions of the Irish were justified: Notre Dame lost twice in the second half of the regular season to finish 8-2 and ranked No. 13.

That Notre Dame team seemed to suffer from a schedule perceived to be not so rigorous and one very close victory. None of the Irish's first five opponents was ranked at the time of the game and Notre Dame beat Purdue 8-7. Those Boilermakers went on to finish 3-7.

Clemson has played just one team that was ranked at game time, then-No. 12 Texas A&M, which has since dropped out of the rankings. And the Tigers had a one-point victory at North Carolina, which is currently 3-4.

IN

No teams are making their season debut in the Top 25 this week, but a couple re-entered.

- No. 23 Iowa State (5-2) is back after winning three straight games.

- No. 25 Wake Forest (6-1) returns after a one-week hiatus. The Demon Deacons bounced back from their first loss of the season last week to beat Florida State on a late field goal.

OUT

- Missouri is the latest team to lose right after moving into the Top 25 for the first time this season. The Tigers were upset by Vanderbilt.

- Washington is out again after losing a thriller to No. 11 Oregon.

CONFERENCE CALL

Big Ten - 6 (Nos. 3, 6, 13, 17, 19, 20)

SEC - 5 (Nos. 1, 2, 7, 8, 10)

Big 12 - 4 (Nos. 5, 14, 15, 23)

Pac-12 - 3 (Nos. 11, 12, 24)

American - 2 (Nos. 16, 18)

ACC - 2 (Nos. 4, 25)

Mountain West - 1 (No. 22)

Sun Belt - 1 (No. 21)

Independent - 1 (No. 8).

RANKED vs. RANKED

No. 13 Wisconsin at No. 3 Ohio State. Big game lost a lot of luster because of what happened in Champaign, Illinois.

No. 8 Notre Dame at No. 19 Michigan. Wolverines face a top-10 opponent for second straight week.

No. 9 Auburn at No. 2 LSU. SEC West survivor series begins.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Current Super Bowl odds:

+$240? New England

+$550? New Orleans

+$900? Green Bay

+$950? San Francisco

+1000? Kansas City

+$1600?Baltimore/Dallas

Quote of the Day
?It was fourth-and-short and I believe in our offensive line. I believe in myself and my team. Coach believed in us, obviously, because we went for it. The defense overflowed to the outside, the offensive line did a great job giving me a hole. And I just hit it.?
Lamar Jackson, talking about his TD run in Seattle Sunday

Tuesday?s quiz
Where did Lamar Jackson play his college football?

Monday?s quiz
There are no left-handed quarterbacks in the NFL right now.

Sunday?s quiz
There are seven NHL franchises located in Canada.

*********************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

Hey, I?m going in the shop Tuesday for my 60,000-mile checkup; be back as soon as I can.

13) When he was 16 years old, Jose Altuve went to an Astros? tryout camp in Venezuela, but was cut because the Astros considered him to be too short.

Altuve went back the next day, where he earned his way into a deal with Houston and a signing bonus of $15,000, a small bonus.

Starting next year, Altuve will be making $29M a year; good thing he went back to that tryout.

12) From the 2017 NFL Draft:
#2? Mitchell Trubisky, Bears
#10? Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
#12? Deshaun Watson, Texans

If I owned the Bears, I might be asking my GM some questions??..

11) So far this season, NFL road underdogs are 45-23-2 ATS.

10) CG Technology in Las Vegas took two money-line bets on the Chicago Bears Sunday, totaling $540,000, so when the Saints beat Chicago, CG Technology was 🙂

9) Troy Aikman is an assistant coach at Episcopal School of Dallas, where his stepson plays WR; Aikman does NFL games on Thursday/Sunday, but is on the Episcopal sideline Friday nites.

8) Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa has a high ankle sprain, is expected to miss a game or two.

In 2022, Alabama is playing Austin Peay in football; why????

Play them in basketball, when they would actually have a chance; it is a ripoff to fans for a dominant program like Alabama to play a I-AA team. Play a Sun Belt team, a MAC team, play Rutgers or UMass. Or, have some onions and play UAB, an in-state team.

7) Jets? G Kelechi Osemele told reporters that he played in pain for the first three games, took painkillers (Toradal) prescribed by the Jets and needs surgery to repair a torn labrum; the Jets think Osemele had a pre-existing condition and can play; he was cleared to play by team doctors and an independent doctor.

Osemele is making $10.2M this season, and his $9.3M base salary is guaranteed because he?s a vested veteran. Oy.

6) Was watching an old movie (1987) Sunday night, Less Than Zero, with Andrew McCarthy and Robert Downey Jr; the female lead in the movie is Jami Gertz, who is married to the owner of the NBA?s Atlanta Hawks, Tony Ressler.

Ms Gertz has represented the Hawks at the NBA Draft Lottery a couple of times; ironically, the Hawks? chances of winning an NBA title are less than zero.

5) Of the 27 guys in last year?s NBA All-Star Game, only two of them (Bradley Beal, Kemba Walker) played in all 82 regular season games.

4) New Orleans Pelicans? rookie Zion Williamson had his knee scoped, is out 6-8 weeks.

3) Washington Redskins (+9.5) covered at home Sunday, losing 9-0 to the 49ers; they?re only second team in last 25 years to cover while being shut out. In 2007, the Dolphins (+16) lost 3-0 to the Steelers.

2) If you bet on every NFL road team this season, you would?ve shown a profit every week- road teams are 62-38-2 ATS in the NFL this year.

1) RIP to major league umpire Eric Cooper, 52, who passed away over the weekend; Cooper is one of only two umpires ever who worked the plate for two no-hitters by the same pitcher (Mark Buehrle). Cooper worked the New York-Minnesota playoff series couple weeks ago.

The other umpire is Ed Vargo, who worked two of Sandy Koufax?s no-hitters.

College football Week 9 opening odds and early action: Bettors on LSU vs Auburn
Patrick Everson

Louisiana State is a perfect 7-0 SU heading into its Week 9 SEC clash against visiting Auburn. LSU opened as an 11.5-point favorite and was quickly bet up to -12 at PointsBet USA.

We?re two weeks away from the first College Football Playoff rankings release, and the Week 9 schedule could have a big impact on those ratings. We check in on the opening odds and early action for four games, with insights from Matt Chaprales, head of content for PointsBet USA.

No. 10 Auburn Tigers at No. 3 Louisiana State Tigers (-11.5)

It?s a battle of two Tigers, with Louisiana State holding the upper hand heading into this Saturday afternoon Southeastern Conference clash. LSU (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS) has won all its games by at least 14 points, including a 36-13 victory at Mississippi State as 17.5-point favorites in Week 8.

Auburn hit a speed bump at Florida in Week 6, losing 24-13 as 2.5-point favorites, so it can ill afford another loss. Auburn (6-1 SU and ATS) had a bye in Week 7, then pounded Arkansas 51-10 as 20.5-point road faves last weekend.

Early bettors seem to like the Bayou Bengals better, as the number quickly moved to LSU -12.

?LSU continues to be a runaway train, and despite Auburn boasting a pretty strong resume, the public is continuing to ride LSU,? Chaprales said. ?The number has already moved in LSU?s direction. While it remains to be seen how high the action will drive it, we?ll be needing Auburn one way or another.?

No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers at No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes (-14)

Wisconsin was certainly a part of the CFP conversation until Week 8, when it suffered one of the season?s most stunning losses. The Badgers (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) went to Illinois as 28.5-point favorites, led 20-7 early in the third quarter, then tumbled outright 24-23 on a field goal in the final seconds.

Ohio State has been just fine on the field and against the oddsmakers, going 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS, cashing the last six games. The Buckeyes boatraced Northwestern 52-3 in a Week 8 Friday nighter, easily covering as hefty 26.5-point road favorites.

?This matchup was obviously looking quite a bit more enticing before Saturday, but Ohio State was going to open as big favorites regardless of Wisconsin?s result,? Chaprales said. ?The first few tickets have been on the Buckeyes laying the two touchdowns.?

No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 20 Michigan Wolverines (-2.5)

Notre Dame could still have a place at the CFP table, but another loss would certainly wipe out any hopes of making the four-team field. The Fighting Irish (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS), whose only setback was at Georgia, edged Southern California 30-27 laying 10.5 points at home in Week 7. Brian Kelly?s squad had a bye in Week 8.

Michigan?s goose is already cooked as it relates to the CFP, with two losses already and Ohio State looming at season?s end. In Week 8 at Penn State, the Wolverines (5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS) rallied from a 21-0 deficit, falling short on a late fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line in a 28-21 loss catching 7.5 points.

?Notre Dame?s tight loss to Georgia a few weeks ago is suddenly not looking as impressive, while Michigan?s slim playoff hopes were officially extinguished by Penn State,? Chaprales said. ?Early action has landed on the Irish, resulting in an adjustment down to Michigan -1.5.?

The Wolverines dipped to -1 by Monday afternoon.

Washington State Cougars at No. 11 Oregon Ducks (-13.5)

Oregon remains the Pac-12?s best-though-unlikely hope for a CFP bid, with its lone loss coming to Auburn in a Week 1 neutral-site contest. The Ducks (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) rallied from a 28-14 third-quarter deficit at Washington to nab a 35-31 win and cover as 3-point favorites Saturday.

Washington State had higher expectations for this season, but a three-game skid ? starting with a 67-63 home loss to UCLA after leading 49-17 as 18-point chalk ? squelched those hopes. The Cougars (4-3 SU, 2-5 ATS) got back on track in Week 8 against Colorado with a 41-10 home rout giving 13.5 points.

?This one looks pretty cut and dried ? Oregon or pass for the public,? Chaprales said. ?We went up with 13.5, but it probably won?t take much for it to move to 14.?

In fact, by Monday afternoon, PointsBet moved the line to Ducks -14.

SMU at Houston
October 22, 2019
By Joe Nelson

Thursday night college football returns with an American Athletic Conference West division battle between SMU and Houston.

SMU has been the surprise AAC leader so far while a Houston squad that has been among the most prominent teams since the conference?s origin in 2015 but has had setbacks on-and-off the field in 2019 as the spread on this game has swung four touchdowns from last season.

SMU Mustangs at Houston Cougars
Venue: At TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas
Time/TV: Thursday, October 24, 7:30 p.m. ET ESPN
Line: SMU -14?, Over/Under 65?
Last Meeting: 2018, at SMU (+14) 45, Houston 31

The AAC has produced an undefeated champion the past two seasons and while many felt that UCF?s reign could be threatened this season, most suggested that Memphis or Cincinnati would be the contenders that could move up to the top of the conference. SMU is the last undefeated team standing in the conference at 7-0 though there remains plenty of work to do for the Mustangs to even seal the West division title with a difficult November schedule ahead.

Sonny Dykes got his head coaching start at Louisiana Tech after being a long-time assistant at Texas Tech under Mike Leach and then at Arizona under Mike Stoops. He took over at California for four seasons with only one positive campaign and his start at SMU was a disaster, taking over for the Frisco Bowl in 2017 with a limited roster and coaching staff in a humiliating 51-10 result against the Louisiana Tech program he formerly coached. In 2018 the Mustangs were a competitive 5-7 squad that came up short in the final two games with a bowl bid on the line but SMU has already earned a postseason spot this season.

Shane Buechele has been a star quarterback for the Mustangs with the junior transferring after two plus seasons at Texas after ultimately losing the job to Sam Ehlinger. He has already thrown for more than 2,000 yards this season with 18 touchdowns while SMU also has more than 750 rushing yards from Xavier Jones. James Proche has been the team?s go-to receiver with 54 catches while Reggie Roberson has nearly 800 receiving yards on a staggering 18.9 yards per catch as the big-play threat.

The SMU defense lacks great numbers with at least 21 points allowed in all but one game this season but 37 points scored for the Mustangs in the season opener has been the low mark for the offense. The perfect start has come with a few close calls holding off a comeback bid at Arkansas State in August in seven-point win while also narrowly winning by three at TCU for a marquee result early in the season. SMU needed triple-overtime to beat Tulsa at home in early October with an incredible rally after trailing 30-9 to start the fourth quarter.

In addition to this road game, SMU is at Memphis next week while playing at Navy in late November while the home finale with Tulane could also be a dangerous game. Navy, Memphis, and Tulane each have just one conference loss and remain viable threats in the AAC West.

Houston is in a transition season with Dana Holgorsen taking over the program after modest success over eight seasons at West Virginia. Holgorsen was an assistant at Houston for two years in 2008 and 2009 and surprised many by jumping down to the smaller conference program after Major Applewhite was let go after two seasons. Houston gave Holgorsen a five-year deal worth $20 million as he is by a wide margin the highest paid Group of 5 head coach in the nation.

Houston quarterback D?Eriq King accounted for 50 touchdowns last season as Holgorsen was expected to inherit a quality team that would compete well right away. A tough September schedule led to a 1-3 start having to face Oklahoma and Washington State while losing the conference opener with Tulane in a wild finish. King opted to take advantage of the redshirt rules and sit out the rest of the season. Backup Clayton Tune played in several games last season but wound up injured in Houston?s loss to Cincinnati, his second game starting after taking over for King. That left Holgorsen?s son Logan to take over and despite modest production he did lead the Cougars past Connecticut last week, though by just seven points playing as a heavy favorite against one of the nation?s worst FBS teams.

Houston had only 284 yards of offense against Connecticut last week but was able to pull away with a 58-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie late in the third quarter. At 3-4 Holgorsen has little chance to match the marginal 8-5 campaign that got Applewhite fired last season and Houston might not be favored in any of the remaining games with a schedule that includes UCF and Memphis in the first two November tests. Tune seems to have a chance to return this week as he has been practicing at a limited level as he rehabs his hamstring. Houston also has injuries on the offensive line and linebacker corps while running back Patrick Carr is not expected to be ready to return this week.

Chances are these teams aren?t as far apart as the current records as Houston has faced a much more difficult schedule but it doesn?t appear likely that Houston?s roster will resemble the outfit that didn?t look out of place vs. quality power five teams early in the year. On a short week after last week?s convincing win over Temple this is a potentially dangerous game for SMU with Memphis next week however, a game that could ultimately decide the division title.

SMU put up 655 yards to 273 for Temple last week in a dominant showing against an Owls defense that beat Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Memphis as that will be a difficult performance for the Mustangs to match. SMU is now ranked 16th in the nation and will have a target on its back, particularly against a Houston squad that was upset by the Mustangs last season.

Last season:
A 3-5 SMU squad had played to overtime with Cincinnati the previous week before facing Houston at home, with the Cougars 7-1 on the season with at least 41 points scored in every single game. They didn?t reach that mark in this game as SMU jumped out to a 17-0 lead and led 31-14 at halftime after scoring a touchdown in the final seconds before the break, with one of Houston?s touchdowns coming on defense. The Cougars would close to within seven in the fourth quarter but mainly behind running behind Ke?Mon Freeman, SMU had a lengthy drive to put the game away inside of three minutes. SMU had a 514-365 edge in yardage with the main disparity in the passing game.

Historical Trends:
Houston is 18-10-1 S/U but just 14-14 ATS in this series since 1980 with SMU winning the past two home meetings but last winning in Houston in 2005. SMU is 1-4 ATS as a double-digit road favorite with two S/U losses going back to 1997, while only once being this big of a road favorite since 2012. Houston has covered in three of the past four games as a home underdog with two S/U wins going back to 2013, winning 36-10 vs. Louisville in 2016 in the last instance playing as this big of a home underdog.

USC at Colorado
October 22, 2019
By Matt Blunt

USC at Colorado
Venue/Location: Folsom Field, Boulder, CO
Time/TV: Friday, Oct. 25 (ESPN2, 9:00 p.m. ET)
Line: USC -13.5, Total 62

Recent Meetings:
2018: USC (-7) 31 vs. Colorado 20, Under 57.5
2017: USC (-14) 38 at Colorado 24, Over 61.5
2016: USC (-5) 21 vs. Colorado 17, Under 62.5

After Friday nights in September were often highlighted by Pac-12 action, this week the conference gets to stand alone in the spotlight as the USC Trojans travel to Colorado to take on a beleaguered Buffaloes team that hopes a return to home soil will return the fight in the squad. Colorado's been outscored 86-10 in their last two games ? road losses to Oregon and Washington State ? and are catching double digits for the third straight week with USC in town.

There weren't many positives to take from those two defeats if you're Colorado, but the good news is that at home this year they own a 2-2 SU record with the two defeats coming either in OT or by just five points. That suggests that they may actually be able to hang around with this USC team on Friday night ? especially if the home field support can be loud, boisterous and prove to be a factor.

The question you've got to ask yourself when breaking down this game is if that indeed will be the case for Colorado in this spot, as situationally there are a few things working in their favor. That number is quite hefty for a Trojans team to cover away from home when it comes down to it.

So after last week's best bets split the board, let's dive into this contest to see if we can find a winner for another edition of ?Pac-12 After Dark.?

From a USC perspective, it's hard to look much better then they did last week in their thorough beating of Arizona (41-14) to easily cover the 10 points they were giving up. The final box score in terms of yardage numbers may not suggest the game was as big of a blowout as the final score does ? thanks to numerous turnovers from Arizona ? but the game was never in question after the first half was finished, and it was a nice way for the Trojans to bounce back after tough losses to Washington and Notre Dame prior.

Yet, it's extremely hard to look that good two weeks in a row if you are the Trojans, especially when you are out on the road again where you are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS this year. Road struggles can be the norm when you've got talented young guy(s) starting at QB, and until the Trojans prove they can go out and be as successful as they are at home, laying this kind of chalk is hard to stomach. And that's before we even get into the potential look-ahead angle that the Trojans could be facing here with a home game against Oregon ? the highest ranked Pac-12 team ? on deck.

Passing on laying the chalk with USC doesn't necessarily mean I'm grabbing the points with Colorado here either.

Sure, Colorado's got the benefit of being at home where they've played much better football all year, could catch a napping USC team looking past them and the like. But the Buffaloes have given up at least 30 points in all seven of their games this year, and that number has risen to 40+ the past two weeks. Even with a double digit underdog, you do want to have some inkling that they could potentially win the game outright, and giving up 30+ every week definitely makes that hard. Situationally, it does make sense to take the points with Colorado, but passing on the side is ultimately where I fall.

Instead, it's that idea that you can pencil in 30+ points for a Colorado opponent that I'm looking to take advantage of with the total, as it's not like USC isn't capable of doing that as it is. USC averages 30.7 points per game on the year already, and barring numerous turnovers themselves, should be able to be the third straight Colorado opponent to at least threaten that 40-point number.

At the same time, USC on the road has given up 30, 28, and 30 points in their three losses, so we should expect Colorado's offense to find success as well. The Buffaloes are a better team at home in the sense that the offense does move the ball, scoring 52, 34, 23, and 30 points in their four home games already this year. That's good for an average of 34.75 points per home game, and while the Trojans are the best team they've faced in this spot, asking them to put up 25+ isn't unreasonable either. I mean, all we've got to see in that case is both teams play to their averages based on the setting ? USC on the road, Colorado at home ? and this number should get surpassed.

USC's 0-5 O/U run isn't going to last forever, and neither is the 0-2 O/U run for Colorado given that their opponents did all that they were supposed to for 'over' bettors in those two performances. The Buffaloes are 3-1 O/U at home this year as it is, and two of the three 'unders' USC has cashed away from home were a simple FG away from having a different result.

This is a game where those things should find a way to happen, as it was just two years ago that we had a near identical side and total for USC's last trip to Colorado. That game saw the Trojans close as -14 road favorites with a total of 61.5, and the 38-24 final score came about with the two teams combining for more than 1000 yards of total offense. That kind of yardage should be put up again in this year's meeting, as 62 or more points is going to be the final result here.

Best Bet: Over 62

YTD Record: 3-6 ATS

Undefeated Clemson not bothered by slide
October 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson keeps winning but has dropped from first to fourth in the poll. Its coaches and players don't seem bothered in the least.

''We think it's cute,'' safety K'Von Wallace said.

The defending national champions are 7-0 and 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference. They started the season at No. 1 and are riding a program-best 22-game winning streak.

But a too-close-for-comfort 21-20 win at North Carolina on Sept. 28 began a slide from the top that has them No. 4 this week behind Alabama, LSU and Ohio State.

Following the North Carolina escape, the Tigers roared back with wins over Florida State (45-14) and Louisville (45-10) the last two weeks. Still, that didn't stop the slippage in the Top 25.

Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott says the joke around the team is that if Clemson continues to win at this rate ''we'll be out of the top 10 by December.''

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has never been about rankings or records until the end - when he wants the Tigers in the final four for the College Football Playoffs. He was not particularly excited in August when the Tigers earned the preseason No. 1 spot for the first time.

He won't lose much sleep as long as Clemson keeps improving.

''Everybody can have any opinions they want,'' he said. ''It doesn't matter. What matters is us closing out October in a strong way. We want to win this division and win this league. What happens after that, hopefully, we'll be positioned well.''

Clemson returns home this week for a game with Boston College (4-3, 2-2) on Saturday night.

The Tigers have made their share of mistakes - quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw two first-half interceptions before leading Clemson's blowout - but except for the scare at North Carolina they have recovered in time to win handily.

Lawrence doesn't worry about the rankings or analysts' critiques of his delivery, technique and decision making.

''I think I do a good job keeping all the outside noise outside,'' said Lawrence, who has thrown eight interceptions this year, double his total from all of 2018.

Swinney said the scrutiny can be wearying, and does not give the full picture.

''Trevor Lawrence throws two interceptions and that's all you see on ESPN,'' he said ''You don't see 20 of 29, nine straight completions. And all that.''

Clemson football under Swinney has routinely been a slow simmer , gradually learning from mid-season mistakes and playing its best at the end. The Tigers started 9-0 in 2016 before a mid-November loss to Pitt looked as if like it might harm their playoff chances. Instead, they won three straight to capture the ACC title and earn a two seed from the CFP committee.

Clemson then defeated Ohio State and Alabama for its first national crown in 35 years. The Tigers were two seeds in the playoff last year, too, on the way to their latest title.

''What we know is that we've been here before,'' Scott said. ''We trust our plan. We trust our preparation in that if we just stay focused and locked in and keep two hands on the wheel'' success will follow.

It's not easy for everyone to stay level-headed, though.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said his grade-school daughter, Lainey, was downright angry Clemson was no longer No. 1.

''She just figured out that LSU and Ohio State'' moved past Clemson, Venables said. ''So now I'm going to have to talk her off the cliff. She was literally so mad.''

Wallace, the senior safety, thinks the team will continue to get better, and he's confident about the path to the playoffs.

''One thing they can't do is when we go undefeated,'' he said. ''They can't leave us out of the playoffs.''

No. 19 Michigan relegated to playing for pride this season
October 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) No. 19 Michigan seems to be relegated to playing just for pride this season.

The Wolverines (5-2, 3-2 Big Ten) were handed a second loss at Penn State, leaving them on the brink of being eliminated from the Big Ten race just past the halfway mark of the regular season.

Michigan went into the season hoping to end its 15-year conference championship drought, the longest in school history, and to perhaps contend for a national championship.

With five scheduled games left to play, those goals appear to be out of reach.

Captain Ben Bredeson, though, insisted there's plenty to play for this season.

''You can't let two losses tank your season,'' the standout offensive guard said Monday.

The Wolverines will have a chance to earn a measure of respect, and perhaps improve their postseason positioning, if they can beat No. 8 Notre Dame (5-1) on Saturday night at the Big House.

''This isn't our last game of the year,'' defensive tackle Carlo Kemp said. ''This isn't, `All right. we're done. Let's start packing up and we'll get ready for next season.'

''We have top 10 matchups coming up. And, the big thing is we have one this Saturday and we have another opportunity on the national stage.''

Michigan also has games remaining against Michigan State and No. 3 Ohio State next month at home.

''We've got three of the most important rivalries coming up,'' Kemp said. ''We got Notre Dame, Michigan State and the game at the end of the year. Those are the games you play for, those are the teams you want to play.''

Michigan was a play - and an extra point - away from pulling into a 28-all tie with the Nittany Lions on Saturday night late in the fourth quarter after falling behind by three touchdowns midway through the second quarter.

Shea Patterson found Ronnie Bell in the end zone on fourth down and the receiver, who has had a breakout season, and put a pass on his hands and he dropped the football.

Bell was in tears on the field, but that didn't get him sympathy from all fans.

A Michigan graduate, Connor Grady, sent Bell an email imploring him to quit the team and the sport.

Coach Jim Harbaugh defended Bell, saying he would take as many players like him as possible, and lashed out at the fan.

''I'm sure Connor Grady got drunk as heck Saturday night,'' Harbaugh said. ''Probably talking to his friend, took to email and probably wrote a bunch of stuff that I'm sure the next day he was like, `Why the heck did I do that. I'm an idiot.' I'm sure he felt pretty bad about it.''

Given a chance to respond on Monday, Grady lamented what he wrote to Bell.

''I would like to state for the record that I wish to apologize to Mr. Bell and any other members of the Michigan community who were rightly offended by my thoughtless message to Mr. Bell,'' Grady wrote in an email to The Associated Press. ''I have privately apologized to Mr. Bell, and I have also apologized publicly to the Bell family.

''I am a proud Michigan alumnus and a passionate fan who has supported the team for years. However, my conduct was not acceptable under any circumstances, and I make no excuses for my behavior. I am deeply sorry to have brought shame and embarrassment to the Michigan community, and I hope that the community can forgive me for such unbecoming behavior.''

Ehlinger will have to carry Texas offense
October 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) After escaping what would have been a crushing home loss to Kansas, Texas and coach Tom Herman face a stark reality: The Longhorns will go only as far as quarterback Sam Ehlinger's broad shoulders can carry them.

The Longhorns defense simply can't stop anybody.

The Jayhawks were the latest team to shred an inexperienced and injured Texas defense. Kansas scored 24 points in the fourth quarter before Ehlinger bailed Texas out with a late drive for Cameron Dicker's field goal on the final play to pull out a 50-48 victory .

While Ehlinger continues on pace to smash Texas passing records this season, the defense could rank among the worst in school history. And when an offense has to top 48 points in order to beat Kansas, which changed offensive coordinators midseason and is winless in the Big 12, the rest of the Texas schedule looks like a weekly tossup as the Longhorns fight to get a rematch with No. 5 Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.

''None of us is satisfied that defensive performance,'' Herman said Monday. ''Everybody associated with that side of the ball (defense), players, coaches, leaders, we all get it ... We're committed to figuring it out. We can, and we will.''

Texas can't cover, stop the run or get to the quarterback.

Texas ranks last in pass defense and almost last in total defense in the Big 12 . It was easy to excuse the dubious marks when it was No. 2 LSU and Oklahoma putting up big yards. But last week it was Kansas quarterback Carter Stanley throwing four touchdown passes and running back Pooka Williams rolling up 190 yards rushing.

The Longhorns have allowed three 100-yard rushers the last two weeks and can't pressure the quarterback without a blitz. The defensive line has only two sacks this season.

In the secondary, injuries to starters have made a huge impact. Last season's all-Big 12 safety, Caden Sterns, hasn't played in five games and other key starters have missed time or played hurt.

Herman brushed off injury concerns early in the season when he noted defensive back was one of the deepest positions on the roster. Gaping holes in the secondary against Oklahoma and Kansas finally raised alarms with a trip to TCU coming up Saturday.

Herman has not publicly criticized the game plans and plays called by defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, who is paid more than $1.7 million per year.

''Guys that have been here 2-3 years should be able to play man-to-man coverage ... Coaches need to uphold our end of the bargain in terms of the techniques and the players need to uphold their end by employing those techniques on game day,'' Herman said.

''I'm never going to say its personnel. We're going to have really good players at the University of Texas,'' Herman said.

Texas still has Ehlinger leading an offense averaging 41 points per game. While Kansas was moving the ball up and down the field, so were the Longhorns, who had a 300-yard passer, a 100-yard rusher and a 100-yard receiver.

Texas outgained Kansas 638-569 with most of the 69-yard difference coming on the final drive to the winning field goal.

Ehlinger has thrown four touchdowns four times this season and his 2,057 yards passing has him chasing Colt McCoy's single-season school record of 3,859 set in 2008.

But Ehlinger also threw a fourth-quarter interception that Kansas turned into a touchdown. He made up for it with six completions on Texas' final drive - he also ran for a first down - for Dicker's game winner.

The chain of events was a perfect example of how Ehlinger goes, so goes Texas.

''At the end of the year, this one (win) is going to count just the same as all the other ones doe,'' Herman said. They don't count them any different. But we expect to play much, much better, especially defensively.''

Iowa gets new life in Big Ten West race
October 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Nowhere did Wisconsin's stunning loss at Illinois reverberate more than in Iowa City. The upset gave the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes new life in the Big Ten West.

In recent weeks, Iowa hasn't looked like a team that is ready to seize such an opportunity.

The Hawkeyes (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) snapped a two-game skid with a lackluster 26-20 win over Purdue last week, moving within a game of the Badgers in the division. Iowa is two games behind Minnesota (7-0, 4-0).

Iowa now has a clear path to the Big Ten title game.

If the Hawkeyes win out - a stretch that would include a road win at No. 13 Wisconsin and a home win over the 17th-ranked Gophers - and Minnesota stumbles once more, they'll make it to Indianapolis.

Iowa will need to start playing much better, starting Saturday at Northwestern (1-5, 0-4), to even entertain the idea of reaching the championship game.

The Hawkeyes will be without receiver Brandon Smith, who coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday will be out 3-5 weeks with an undisclosed right leg injury.

''It reminds us that every week is important. You can't overlook any team,'' Iowa linebacker Djimon Colbert said of Wisconsin's defeat. ''The West is open now, so we've got to come out each week and focus on that week individually. And hopefully that should lead us to Indy at the end of the road.''

The Hawkeyes' defense has been impeccable through seven games, ranking fifth in scoring defense (11.6 points per game) and 10th in total defense (275 yards a game). Iowa has been consistent as well. Purdue was the first team to score 20 on the Hawkeyes.

Iowa's offense has been all over the map though and losing Smith won't help matters.

Smith, Iowa's leading receiver with 33 catches for 407 yards and four touchdowns, tumbled to the turf after catching his career-high ninth pass against Purdue.

Smith had to be helped off the field by linemen Tristan Wirfs and Alaric Jackson, and he hobbled to the locker room on crutches.

''It's taking one of better threats off the field,'' Ferentz said. ''You just make adjustments and keep playing.''

The Hawkeyes running attack struggled again against the Boilermakers, rushing for just 102 yards on 33 tries. But junior back Mekhi Sargent did provide a glimmer of hope late in the fourth quarter.

Nursing a six-point lead, Sargent reeled off runs of 21 and 14 yards on back-to-back plays for the game-winning touchdown.

''It's a 60 minute game. You've got to bring your horses the whole time,'' Sargent said. ''We just wanted to finish strong.''

If Iowa can find more consistency on offense, a season-ending winning streak is possible.

The Hawkeyes beat No. 23 Iowa State on the road and its losses, to No. 6 Michigan and No. 19 Penn State, came by just 12 combined points.

Iowa also has three road games left, but its defense should give it a chance away from Iowa City.

''It was kind of crazy to see that,'' Stone said. ''Even for us, it really doesn't matter that Wisconsin lost. We know we have to go through them to get the West. Even Minnesota, they're still undefeated. So, we don't want to look ahead, but we know we have to go through those teams.''

It's Auburn's turn to face Burrow, LSU
October 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Jeremiah Dinson didn't bother reviewing film of Joe Burrow and LSU's offense against Auburn last season because ''he's a totally different quarterback.''

Now, the challenge for Dinson and No. 9 Auburn in Baton Rouge on Saturday will be contending with the 2019 edition of Burrow and No. 2 LSU's much more explosive offense. It's no small task, of course.

''I knew he could always throw the ball,'' Dinson, Auburn's safety and leading tackler, said Tuesday. ''But it's crazy, man, that they look like a totally different offense.''

Burrow is leading the nation with 29 touchdown passes and his 2,484 yards passing ranks second.

An Auburn defense led by Dinson and linemen Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson is the latest to try to slow him. Auburn has banked heavily on a defense that hasn't allowed more than 24 points in a game while freshman quarterback Bo Nix has gained experience and the offense dealt with injuries to receiver Anthony Schwartz and tailback JaTarvious Whitlow.

Of course, 24 points has been less than a half's work for Burrow and LSU this season. This LSU offense is averaging 52.5 points and 561 yards a game.

Burrow was solid against Auburn last season, if not spectacular. He passed for 249 yards while completing less than half his attempts, with LSU winning 22-21 on Cole Tracy's field goal as time expired.

While that performance wasn't necessarily a harbinger that Burrow would emerge as a Heisman Trophy contender a year later, his clutch play in a hostile environment did show mettle and poise.

''Joe is cool as a cucumber,'' LSU coach Ed Orgeron said after the game. ''He's not going to falter under pressure and he's going to make the right decisions.''

Now, Burrow faces a defense whose weakest link has been the secondary. Auburn ranks 68th nationally in yards passing allowed per game (224.7).

Auburn intercepted only one pass in its first seven games but had two picks in a 51-10 win over Arkansas.

Auburn held Oregon's Justin Herbert to a respectable 242 yards but allowed 335 yards passing to Texas A&M's Kellen Mond, with a sizable chunk coming during a fourth-quarter comeback that fell short.

Davidson is hardly lacking confidence in Auburn's defense, but he doesn't downplay the task, either.

''It's a big challenge, I can say that,'' Davidson said. ''I'll take my guys over anybody because I know we put in the work beside each other every day. But that's a great football team. That's a great football team. They're going to be a test, a big test. A great offense vs. a great defense. You never know who's going to come out on top of that.''

Auburn's two biggest stars have been Brown and Davidson, both recruited by Orgeron. They're part of a defensive front the LSU coach says is the best ''we have seen so far.''

Brown has three sacks, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Orgeron predicts he'll likely be a top-five NFL draft pick and called the 6-foot-5, 318-pounder a ''mountain of a man.''

LSU offensive tackle Austin Deculus likes the challenge of facing Brown & Co.

''Everybody in the movies wants to slay the dragon,'' Deculus said. ''In that sense he's the big guy. He's the one with a target on his back. You want to beat the best guy.''

Davidson has emerged as one of the SEC's top pass rushers with 5.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Both have forced two fumbles.

''You look at a guy like Derrick Brown, who is that big and physical,'' Orgeron said. ''Nobody that we've faced so far has been that big and physical. He's very, very disruptive. He's hard to match one-on-one. You have to double-team him.

''Marlon Davidson is good pass-rusher. These guys get most of their rushes with a four-man rush.''

With LSU's explosive offense, that could be a key.

Dantonio says Spartans must plant 'foot in the ground'
October 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Mark Dantonio and Michigan State have one more chance for a win during a tough midseason stretch that has raised questions about the state of the program.

''Coming off the Wisconsin game, we've got to plant our foot in the ground and drive forward. I think that's what you have to do,'' Dantonio said. ''Disappointing in how we played up there, the outcome and everything that was going on with that. We've got to figure it out and reset and move forward, and I think we're capable of that.''

That comment was about as close as Dantonio came to a rallying cry during his weekly news conference Tuesday. For the most part, the Michigan State coach's session with reporters felt routine even though the team is coming off an absolute drubbing.

The Spartans lost 38-0 to Wisconsin two weekends ago, and that came after a 34-10 defeat at the hands of Ohio State. The team has clearly slipped in recent seasons, and now it's becoming harder to envision a major turnaround this year.

Earlier this season, Dantonio called out his team publicly after a substandard offensive performance. He didn't do that Tuesday, perhaps realizing that such a move can only work so many times.

''I know everybody hates to hear me say it but I'm going to stay positive with our guys and believe in them,'' Dantonio said in response to a question about dropped passes. ''I think that's the best thing that I can do.''

Since winning the Big Ten in 2015, Michigan State is 15-16 in conference play. Dantonio shook up his offensive staff this past offseason, but he did so by changing roles instead of bringing in new people. The Spartans seemed to be making progress when they scored 71 points over two games against Northwestern and Indiana, but the losses to Ohio State and Wisconsin suggested that there's a big gap between Michigan State and the league's top teams.

This weekend, the Spartans (4-3, 2-2) host No. 6 Penn State (7-0, 4-0), a team Michigan State beat last season.

''Young people have always been resilient - and they believe very strongly in themselves. I didn't sense any kind of - certainly there's disappointment, but people get up off the ground quick around here, and that's what you have to do,'' Dantonio said. ''If you're going to succeed in the next step, then you'd better get your mind right and get back up.''

The offensive struggles are nothing new for the Spartans, but even their normally stingy defense has had trouble. Michigan State has allowed at least 30 points in three straight games.

''We've just got to get back to who we are - a fast, physical defense,'' defensive lineman Kenny Willekes said. ''Fly around, and have fun out there.''

Last week, Michigan State confirmed three more players had entered the transfer portal, following a few others who had done so earlier in the season. The players in question weren't necessarily playing huge roles, but their decisions added to a sense of gloom.

''It's one of those things that I think is probably here to stay, and you have to deal with it as a head football coach and as a staff,'' Dantonio said. ''You really have to look at recruiting and say, OK, you have a guy that's responsible for the portal. I think that today when I looked at it, there were 344 names in there. So that's a lot of people. Where are all those people going to go? I'm not quite sure.

''As I said earlier, do the best I can and take the high road in this capacity. I appreciate what those guys did for us when they were Spartans.''

Dantonio said he will keep moving forward amid any attrition, and he clearly expects the players to do the same.

''You've got to first and foremost have that mentality that you've got to step forward and so that's what we've tried to do here,'' Dantonio said. ''We've maintained a positive approach and we're trying to fix the things that we can fix and change the things we cannot.''
