NFL leaders in passing yards (thru 4 weeks):
1,250— Justin Herbert, LAC
1,227— Josh Allen, Buff
1,126— Jared Goff, Det
1,125— Matt Ryan, Ind
1,120— Jalen Hurts, Phil
1,106— Patrick Mahomes, KC

Quote of the Day
“These guys are so resilient, I’ve been saying it all year long……It was a great ballgame. We just kept fighting.”
Phillies’ manager Rob Thomson

Friday’s quiz
Where did Patrick Mahomes play his college football?

Friday’s quiz
2019 was the last time a World Series went seven games, when Washington beat the Astros 4-3.

Thursday’s quiz
Charlie Manuel was the Phillies manager in 2011, last time they made the playoffs.

***********************
Saturday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……

Before we start tonight, if you like golf and you live in the Albany/Clifton Park area, there is a place you need to visit. Actually, four of them.

Friend of mine is part-owner of the The Bunker, golf simulators with food/drink on site.

There are Bunkers in Guilderland, Clifton Park, Loudonville, North Greenbush.

They’ve got good food, private areas for parties, good music and an excellent opportunity to work on your golf game. I highly recommend it.

In the world of sports tonight……
— Terry Francona’s managerial career:
1997-2000 Phillies 285-363, no playoff games
2004-11 Boston Red Sox 744-552, 28-17 playoffs, won 2 World Series
2013-22 Cleveland 845-671, 13-14 playoffs, won 2016 AL title

He was also the AA Birmingham Barons’ manager the year Michael Jordan played minor league ball, which had to be a fascinating experience.

Francona is a Hall of Fame manager, for sure.

Guardians 2, Rays 1
Siri homered in the top of the 6th inning for Tampa. When he hit the home run, someone said “Siri hit a home run” and the guy’s phone started asking him questions. No, not that Siri.

Jose Ramirez hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th; hard to overstate how great a player he’s been— the last two years, he’s hit 65 homers, knocked in 229 runs.

Top three hitters in the Rays’ order went 0-12.

Padres 7, Mets 1
Josh Bell homered in first inning for San Diego.
Scherzer allowed seven runs in 4.2 IP

Yu Darvish allowed one run in 7 IP.

— Peter Seidler is the Padres’ owner; he founded a private equity firm and became really, really rich. Seidler became the Padres’ largest stakeholder in 2020.

What makes this noteworthy is that Seidler’s grandfather was Walter O’Malley, the guy who used to own the Dodgers, the guy who moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.

When I was a kid, I learned at a very young age to never say the name “O’Malley”; my dad grew up in New York City, was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan. He disliked Walter O’Malley, and that is being kind. If my dad were alive today and watching his Mets play against a team owned by O’Malley’s grandson, well that would’ve been interesting.

— Phillies 6, Cardinals 2
Juan Yepez put St Louis up 2-0 with a 2-run homer in 7th inning.
Phillies scored six runs in ninth inning. Juan Segura had the go-ahead hit.

Mariners 4, Blue Jays 0
Cal Raleigh hit a 2-run homer in first inning, the first 1st-inning runs Manoah allowed at home this season.

Castillo got 22 outs on 108 pitches; pretty good acquisition at the trade deadline.

— Atlanta Braves Dansby Swanson/Matt Olson were only major leaguers this season who played in all 162 of their team’s games.

Houston 33, Memphis 32
Memphis led 20-7 after three quarters.
Houston scored a TD with 1:17 left, another one with 0:18 left.
Cougars recovered an onside kick to set up the winning score.

Nebraska 14, Rutgers 13
Rutgers led this game 13-0 at halftime.
Nebraska scored game-winning TD with 8:54 left on a 27-yard drive after an INT
Cornhuskers won despite running the ball 29 times for only 72 yards.

— Denver Broncos had ball in red zone on four drives Thursday night, but scored only three points on those drives, which is really bad.

Broncos/Colts both acquired an aging star QB this off-season, much like Tampa Bay got Tom Brady two years ago, and Rams added Matthew Stafford last year. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Bucs/Rams both won a Super Bowl with their new QB’s.

So far though, Colts/Broncos are struggling on offense. Colts’ offensive line is a mess, which is really bad for an older, immobile QB. There are murmurs that Denver’s new head coach may be overmatched in his job- he is supposed to be an offensive guru. So far, not so much.

— Texas-Oklahoma play today; this is first time Longhorns are favored over Oklahoma since 2009, when I watched the game in Planet Hollywood’s sports book in Las Vegas.

Remember sitting there watching Sam Bradford getting tossed around like a rag doll by Texas defenders, and I laughed: “Some dumb team is going to draft Bradford next spring, and they’re going to regret it” Turns out I was right, unfortunately.

Six months later, I wasn’t laughing when the Rams took him with the first pick in the 2010 draft. He played four (injury-plagued) years for the Rams, going 18-30-1 in his starts.

Oy.

— Villanova’s top basketball recruit, Cam Whitmore hurt his thumb this week and had surgery on the thumb- he’ll miss the start of the season. Whitmore is expected to be the first one/done Villanova player, that’s how good he is supposed to be.

— Atlanta Hawks-Milwaukee Bucks played couple game in Abu Dhabi this week; the NBA uses its preseason schedule to promote their sport world-wide, and they’re really good at it.

Not sure traveling halfway around the world is the best way to prepare your team for an 82-game season but it helps the league make a boatload of money.

$236.7M— Padres
$200.1M— Braves
$192.9M— Astros
$126.7M— Mariners
$82.1M— Guardians

Quotes of the Day
“Quarterback.”
Commanders coach Ron Rivera, when asked why the other three teams in the NFC East are better than Washington

“I had a really hard time watching that. When I heard it, I couldn’t believe it. I’m not hear to defend Carson Wentz … But this is a defensive HC that’s absolutely driving the bus over his quarterback.”
Alex Smith

Tuesday’s quiz
Who played QB for the Raiders, the first time they were in the Super Bowl?

Monday’s quiz
San Diego Padres have played in two World Series, losing both; Hall of Famer Dick Williams managed them in 1984, future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy in 1998.

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

Chiefs 30, Raiders 29
— Raiders scored TD with 4:27 left, went for 2 points and lead, but failed.
— Carr threw TD passes of 58-48 yards, both to Adams.
— Carr is now 58-75 as an NFL starter.
— Raiders are 12-7 ATS last 19 games as a road underdog.
— Raiders’ four losses are by 5-6-1-2 points.

— Raiders led 17-0 with 5:00 left in first half.
— Chiefs first 3 drives of 2nd half: 33 plays, 207 yards, 20 points.
— Kelce caught 7 passes for only 25 yards, but four TD’s.
— Chiefs won their two hone games by total of four points.
— Chiefs won 13 of last 15 games in this rivalry.

— Monday morning, I had a 9:45am follow-up appointment with my cataract surgeon; was there until 12:50pm (they must make a boatload of $$$!!!). I’m walking out of the office, down a ramp to my car, and this guy coming the other way says (kind of loudly) to me:

“Those two guys you traded to me were no good. They didn’t produce this weekend”

My first thought was, this guy is talking to me and I have no idea who he is— are my eyes screwing up again? Is this guy in my fantasy league?

Then I realize I’m wearing my Oakland A’s cap and this guy is a Mets fan who is ticked off because they lost in the playoffs, and Bassitt-Marte-Canha didn’t do so well. We talked baseball for a couple of minutes, then went our separate ways.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the A’s also traded Profar-Manaea to San Diego, and let Bob Melvin bolt Oakland to be manager of the Padres. It isn’t much fun rooting for a team that doesn’t try to win.

— Carolina Panthers fired coach Matt Rhule Monday, after the Panthers’ 1-4 start. Rhule went 11-27 in his tenure at Carolina; he was in the third year of a 7-year, $62M contract. Panthers still owe him over $40M, but owner David Tepper is the NFL’s wealthiest owner, so he told Rhule to take a hike.

Defensive assistant Steve Wilks was named interim coach; he was the head coach for one season with the Arizona Cardinals.

— Since 2016, there have been 137 quarterbacks who threw 50+ passes in a game; those QBs’ teams won 26 of those games.

— Baltimore Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker has made 61 straight field goals in 4th quarter/OT, 27 of them from 40+ yards out. You can make a solid argument for him as the best kicker ever.

By the way, Tucker is also 23-23 on field goals in last minute of regulation/overtime.

— Washington QB Carson Wentz against the spread:
2016-17— 18-11 ATS (62%)
2018-22— 25-37 ATS (40%).

Wentz is on his third team in three years; he has gone from prospect to suspect.

— Tennessee Titans are 3-2 this season, but haven’t scored in the 4th quarter; they’re the first team since the 2005 49ers to go scoreless in the 4th quarter thru five games- those 49ers went 1-4 in their first five games.

— Undrafted QB’s to win their first five NFL starts:
1985— Dieter Brock, Rams
1986— Mike Tomczak, Bears
1999— Kurt Warner, Rams
2018-19— Kyle Allen, Panthers
2021-22— Cooper Rush, Cowboys

— Detroit Lions went for it on 4th down six times Sunday but went 0-6; since 1991, that is the most times any team has gone for it on 4th down without converting any of them.

— NFL underdogs are 44-32-3 ATS (55.7%) this season, the best %age for underdogs thru five weeks since 2010, when dogs covered 62.2% of time in Weeks 1-5.

Under is 46-32-1 (58.2%) so far this season

— Houston RB Dameon Pierce’s last three games:
Week 3— 20 rushes, 80 yards, TD
Week 4— 14 rushes, 131 yards, TD
Week 5— 26 rushes, 99 yards, TD

Since the start of 2020, Texans are 5-0 against Jacksonville, 4-28-1 against the rest of the NFL.

— SEC basketball has six new head coaches this coming season; six out of 14 is a lot.

— Atlanta Braves signed P Spencer Strider to a 6-year, $75M contract; Strider went 11-5, 2.67 in 31 games (20 starts) this season.

— Georgia Bulldogs’ QB Stetson Bennett turns 25 years old in two weeks; he is less than a year younger than Bengals’ QB Joe Burrow, who is in his 3rd NFL season.

— Odds for the divisional round of the playoffs:
Houston -250, Seattle +210
New York -230, Cleveland +195
Atlanta -200, Phillies +165
Dodgers -225, San Diego +180

— New Jersey Giants hit the jackpot with their new coach Brian Daboll, who interviewed with five other teams before he landed a head coaching gig. Bears, Dolphins also interviewed Daboll last winter.

Daboll was a grad assistant at Michigan State when Nick Saban coached there; he later joined up with Saban again at Alabama in 2017. Daboll was born in Canada, went to that football power U of Rochester.

Sometimes success in the NFL comes from what doesn’t happen; those five teams that passed on Daboll have made the Giants very happy.

David Letterman

Wednesday’s quiz
In the old TV show Magnum PI, what were the names of Higgins’ two dogs?

Tuesday’s quiz
Daryle Lamonica played QB for the Raiders, the first time they were in the Super Bowl (SB II)

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

Before we start today, a word of thanks to two people and the folks who work for them.

Three years ago today, my retina detached in Las Vegas; I had an operation 10 days later, with Dr Mallick fixing my retina. I am eternally grateful to him and his staff for their expertise. He has moved to New Jersey since then; hope he is doing well.

Few months later, I had to get cataracts removed from that eye, which were a by-product of the retina surgery. Dr Lemanski and her staff did a great job, so now my vision is good again. I’m very appreciative of both these great doctors and the skilled people who work for them.

— My Question of the Day, and I’ve given this one some thought— I’m not 100% sure of my answer, but if you were the GM of the Baltimore Ravens, and you made $2M a year or whatever it is that job pays, would you pay Lamar Jackson $40M a year to be your quarterback?

Jackson is 40-14 in regular season games with Baltimore, 1-3 in playoff games.

If your $2M a year job depended on whether the Ravens won/lost, would you pay Jackson to be your franchise QB? Ravens are going to have to make the decision pretty soon.

By the way, if I was the Ravens’ GM, I’d pay Lamar.

Phillies 7, Braves 6
Nick Castellanos went 3-5 with 3 RBI and had a sliding catch to end the game. Phillies are 3-0 so far in these playoffs.

— Braves weren’t swept in any series this year, first time in 18 years that happened in the major leagues. This year, Atlanta was 18-2 in Game 2 of a series when they lost the opener, and the two times they lost, they won the third game both times.

Astros 8, Mariners 7
Yordan Alvarez hit a walk-off HR to cap Astros’ big rally.
Seattle led 7-3 in 8th inning.
Top three guys in Seattle lineup went 7-13 with 5 RBI
Verlander gave up six runs in four IP.

— Of the 26 players on Seattle’s roster for this series, 17 were acquired via trade, only 6 are home-grown players. Astros have 14 home grown players, with nine acquired via trades.

New York 4, Guardians 1
Cole allowed one run, got 19 outs on 101 pitches.
Rizzo hit a two-run homer.
9th-place hitter Bader also homered.

Dodgers 5, Padres 3
Dodgers led 5-0 in third inning.
Dodgers didn’t get any hits after the third inning.
LA used four relievers who threw four shutout innings.

— NFL teams who’ve gone over the total the most this season:
Browns, Raiders, both 4-1. Raiders 3-1-1

NFL teams who’ve stayed under the total the most:
Bengals, Colts both 5-0

— You see that Allstate commercial with Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid drawing mustaches on the face of people sleeping on the airplane? Apparently in real life, Reid loves to sketch; when he doodles, he sketches faces a lot.

Reid grew up in the Los Angeles area; his father painted sets for stage productions in LA.

— UCLA Bruins football team is 6-0 for the first time since 2005.

— Oklahoma Sooners got waxed 49-0 by Texas last week, first time the Sooners got shut out since 1998, when Texas A&M shut them out, 29-0, when John Blake was Oklahoma’s coach.

— I neglected to post this Sunday, because it happened at 2:25am Saturday night, but there was a great comeback out west, with Oregon State scoring on a 56-yard TD pass with 0:13 left to beat Stanford, 28-27. Was a terrific game, but this was an ugly loss for the Cardinal.

— When the Tampa Bay-Cleveland game went extra innings the other day, had to be reminded that there are no ghost runners in the playoffs, which is a good thing, the way it should be.

Am looking forward to when they announce the rule changes for next baseball season; pretty sure the ghost runner will still be a thing, but shifts will be gone and a pitch clock figures to be added. Not really sure who that will help.

— Kansas Jayhawks are off to a surprising 5-1 start; their game Saturday was on FOX, with Jason Benetti as the announcer. They showed a guy standing behind Kansas coach Leipold; apparently he is the analytics guy who stands right behind the coach to give him his input on any strategic decisions that pop up.

Odd thing is, the guy apparently asked the FOX people not to show him or say his name on the air; no idea why, but Benetti did quickly say his name on the air.

— Whoever put a TV camera inside the pylon on the goal line deserves a big raise.

— Denver QB Russell Wilson has a torn lat in his throwing shoulder; he got some platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in the shoulder, and will try to play thru the injury.

— NFL divisions records against the spread, in non-division games:
NFC East— 9-5 ATS, 5-0 as a home favorite.
NFC North— 6-6 ATS, 4-2 at home.
NFC South— 5-7 ATS, 2-5 at home.
NFC West— 6-8 ATS, 1-5 as a favorite.

AFC East— 9-5 ATS, 6-2 on road, 5-1 as a favorite.
AFC North— 7-7 ATS, 3-2 as an underdog.
AFC South— 6-6 ATS; they were an underdog in 10 of 12 games.
AFC West— 4-8 ATS, 0-4 as a home favorite, 1-0 as an underdog.
