Andy Reid says his 'heart goes out' to Pete Carroll after Chiefs' shutout win over injury-depleted Raiders

Reid is feeling for his longtime coaching peer

reidcarroll.jpg
Imagn Images

Andy Reid's first regular-season shutout was bittersweet, to say the least.

Following the Chiefs' 31-0 win over the Raiders, Reid showed empathy for Pete Carroll, whose team was dominated from the start against a Kansas City team that entered the game as a 13.5-point favorite. The Chiefs led 21-0 at halftime and would go onto record its first regular-season shutout since 2011 and its first since Reid came to Kansas City in 2013.

"My heart goes out to Pete," Reid said afterward. "The injuries are crushing for him. Especially when 98 (Maxx Crosby) goes out of the game. ... I know it's the Raiders, but I hate seeing that happen."

As Reid alluded to, Las Vegas (2-5) been been hit hard by injuries of late. They started the game without several key starters that included tight end Brock Bowers and receiver Jakobi Meyers. Las Vegas then lost Crosby during the game when the perennial Pro Bowl pass rusher left the contest for good during the first half with back and knee injuries.

Despite the injuries, Carroll said afterward he didn't see Sunday's outcome coming. He said the drubbing was a reminder of how much work his team has to do in the weeks ahead.

"They're a terrific team," Carroll said of the reigning three-time AFC champion Chiefs. "They did everything like they do. They played really well in all phases and kept us totally at bay. We couldn't make a first down and couldn't get off the field. They just did like they do.

"We have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of catching up to do. We've got to get our guys back. The keys guys that missed the game were key guys on our football team, and we weren't able to overcome that."

Carroll commended his team for its effort on Sunday, but the fact was the Raiders were simply outmatched. The Chiefs scored touchdowns on their first four drives and led 31-0 before Patrick Mahomes and several other starters were taken out of the game by the start of the fourth quarter.

The score, while bad, doesn't fully tell the story of how dominate of a win this was for the Chiefs. Kansas City had 30 first downs to the Raiders' three, had 434 total yards to the Raiders' 95, and didn't allow Las Vegas to convert on any of its seven third-down situations.

Kansas City could have easily added to its lead in the fourth quarter, but elected to run the ball on fourth-and-goal after recovering a fumble deep in Raiders' territory. The Chiefs then started kneeling on the ball well before the two-minute warning.

Reid certainly isn't going to apologize for a win, especially one against one of the Chiefs' longtime division rivals. It's clear, though -- based on his decision to not run up the score Sunday in addition to his postgame comments -- that Reid clearly feels for Carroll, his longtime coaching peer who is trying to revive a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game since capturing its most recent Super Bowl berth at the end of the 2022 season.

2025 NFL Trade Deadline Tracker: Live updates and analysis

Stay up to date with every move before the NFL trade deadline

With the 2025 NFL trade deadline set for Tuesday, Nov. 4, every new deal from here on out will shape the playoff chase or accelerate a rebuild. Already we've seen the Cincinnati Bengals turn to Joe Flacco in an effort to stabilize their quarterback room, and that's just the start of what figures to be a busy few weeks. Expect fringe contenders like the Steelers and Buccaneers to explore upgrades, while teams stuck near the bottom, such as the Jets and Saints, weigh offers for veterans who could bring back draft capital.

To help you track all the NFL trade deals ahead of the deadline, we'll be logging every move in one place with concise analysis highlighting who got better, who got future assets, and what it means for the season ahead. Whether it's a blockbuster involving a former Pro Bowler or a depth move that fills a key injury gap, this page will be your running guide through deadline season.

Jaguars, Browns swap cornerbacks (10/9)

team logo

Jags get: Greg Newsome, sixth-round pick

Lanky corner in final year of rookie deal

This is a win-now move. Jacksonville gets a solid cornerback in Newsome, who has graded out well this year, allowing just a 52% completion rate as the primary defender, on track to be the best of his career. Through five Weeks, he's Pro Football Focus' 33rd-ranked cornerback out of 85 who have played at least 150 defensive snaps; Campbell is 57th.

Newsome is in the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, so he's set to be a free agent at the end of this season. There's a significant scheme adjustment here, too, as the Browns play the highest rate of man coverage in the league by far, while Jacksonville is 23rd, but clearly the Jaguars see plenty to like in Newsome. Jacksonville does take on a $19.5-million dead cap hit in 2026, but that's a problem for a few months from now.

Browns get: Tyson Campbell, seventh-round pick

Solid starter getting a fresh start

This is a depth improvement for Cleveland. Campbell had a strong 2024 season after signing a four-year, $76.5 million extension, but the new Jaguars regime clearly wanted to move on from him after a slow start to this season. A significant chunk of that deal has already been paid, meaning the Browns will get to look at Campbell for nearly an entire season and evaluate how he fits both now and in the future.

Campbell has had some injury issues, but when he's healthy, he's a starting-caliber cornerback, and one who's under team control well into the future.

Harbaughs do defensive business (10/7)

team logo

Chargers get: Odafe Oweh, seventh-round pick

Athletic but inconsistent edge rusher

This is a win-now move for Los Angeles. Oweh broke out last season with 10 sacks in 2024 -- double his previous career high – but the 2021 first-round pick is yet to record a sack this season. His pressure rate this season – 10.3% – is slightly lower than his 11.7% last year, but neither are particularly impressive numbers; he was at 17.2% in 2023.

Perhaps time had simply run its course for Oweh in Baltimore. He was playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal and will be a free agent this offseason. In Los Angeles, he'll play under innovative defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and hope to provide pressure both before and after Khalil Mack returns from an elbow injury. Through five weeks, Los Angeles ranks 19th in pressure rate.

Ravens get: Alohi Gilman, fifth-round pick

Reliable safety, plus a better draft pick

I see this as a dart throw. Things have already gone majorly off the rails for Baltimore (1-4), and trading away a former first-round pick certainly wasn't on the Bingo card one month ago. But Baltimore has better depth and youth on the edge than it does at safety, where ArDarius Washington tore his Achilles during the offseason and Kyle Hamilton has been dealing with a groin injury. That left undrafted rookie Reuben Lowery to play every defensive snap of a 44-10 Week 5 loss to the Texans.

Flacco gets new job, stays in Ohio (10/7)

Bengals get: Joe Flacco, sixth-round pick

Aging pocket passer hoping to raise the floor

Sometimes, the NFL is about optics, and the Bengals trailing 28-3 at halftime and Jake Browning getting booed off the field after his third interception in an eventual 37-24 loss to the Lions in Week 4 was bad, bad optics. Enter Flacco, whom Cleveland benched after Week 4. Through five weeks, Browning was dead last in expected points added per dropback. Flacco was third-worst.

The Bengals are hoping Flacco can provide a similar boost to the one he provided Cleveland in 2023, when it ended up making the playoffs thanks to a late-season surge. The Bengals don't have near the defense the Browns do, and the offensive line is a mess, but for a cheap price, it's a move that makes sense. If Flacco recaptures the magic, great. If he doesn't, this season was probably lost the moment Joe Burrow got hurt anyway. It's a total dart throw.

team logo

Browns get: Fifth-round pick

A modest gain in draft position

Flacco was no longer part of the plan in Cleveland, which moves up a round in the draft. That's solid business for a team that's had its eye on the future essentially since this season began.

NFL Week 7 winners and losers: Chiefs, Eagles rediscover offensive juice as Dolphins, Jets sink to new lows

Identifying the best (and worst) performers of Sunday's action

mahomes-chiefs-imagn.jpg
Imagn Images

Another Sunday, another full slate of NFL action nearly in the books. And Week 7 has had no shortage of major storylines so far: After Joe Flacco and the Cincinnati Bengals outdueled Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers to kick off this week's schedule, a couple of other surprising teams stole the spotlight, including the Cleveland Browns against the sinking Miami Dolphins.

Some results were fairly predictable, like Mike Vrabel leading a decisive win over his old team, the Tennessee Titans, thanks to another crisp performance from quarterback Drake Maye. Others were a bit more eye-opening, like the Los Angeles Rams laying waste to the Jacksonville Jaguars overseas, despite the latter entering the international contest with a promising 4-2 record. And then there were the literal no-contest matchups, like the Kansas City Chiefs blanking the rival Las Vegas Raiders in a 31-0 shutout.

Which players, coaches and teams were the biggest winners (and losers) of Week 7? Here are our top picks for the most noteworthy standouts of Sunday's matchups, for both better and worse:

Winner: Bo Nix

Down 19 points in the fourth quarter? No worries. Nix has built a reputation as a late-game fighter, and it showed up in a big way on Sunday, when the New York Giants looked poised to run away with a road upset against his Denver Broncos. The second-year quarterback led five straight scoring drives and totaled four of his own touchdowns to fuel the Broncos' massive comeback.

Loser: Brian Daboll

The embattled Giants coach may be best friends with hotshot rookie Jaxson Dart, but his seat may heat up after his squad surrendered 33 points in the fourth quarter of a would-be win over Denver. His handpicked emergency kicker, Jude McAtamney, missed two extra points. And it can be hard to overcome the kind of gut punch the locker room will feel after an "L" like this.

Winner: Brian Schottenheimer

Why aren't we talking more about what this guy's doing -- or at least enjoying -- at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys? America's Team may still lack a playoff-caliber defense, but Dak Prescott has been slinging it like MVP material for most of the year. That continued against the rival Washington Commanders, with Javonte Williams, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens all making splash plays.

Loser: The Commanders

Sunday was a double whammy for Washington. Not only did Dan Quinn's team, which finished 2024 on the doorstep of the Super Bowl, look increasingly old and slow playing catch-up with the Cowboys, but star quarterback Jayden Daniels also left with a hamstring injury. That's Daniels' second significant injury of the year, and we're not even to the midway point of 2025 just yet.

Winner: Andy Reid

Reid's Chiefs looked like they might finally be returning to title-caliber form in a prime-time rout of the Detroit Lions in Week 6. Everything finally clicked against the Raiders, though, with Patrick Mahomes greatly benefiting from the 2025 debut of Rashee Rice. The formerly suspended wide receiver showed up with seven catches and two scores to balance out Reid's offensive arsenal.

Loser: Tua Tagovailoa

Each week has basically been a new low for the Miami Dolphins quarterback, both on and off the field. Fresh off a public apology for implying his teammates were slacking off in the building, Tagovailoa tossed three picks in a hapless blowout loss to none other than the Cleveland Browns. Back-breaking turnovers have been his 2025 calling card.

Winner: Matthew Stafford

No Puka Nacua? No problem for the Los Angeles Rams quarterback, who gave London a show for the ages despite rainy conditions against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Stafford may be 37, but he slung it like he was 27 on the international stage, tossing five scores, including three to Davante Adams. He also felt zero pressure, getting elite defensive support to the tune of seven sacks.

Loser: Aaron Glenn

Look, we're not going to sit here and suggest all rebuilds are effective overnight; Glenn's old team, the Detroit Lions, endured lots of bumps before emerging as a real contender. But after Sunday's ugly 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers, in which he finally benched Justin Fields despite repeatedly assuring reporters he would not, Glenn became the first Jets coach to ever start 0-7.

Winner: The Eagles' passing game

Philadelphia produced some scarily erratic passing work in a two-game skid prior to Sunday, especially considering the wealth of talent in their lineup. Up against Brian Flores' exotic Minnesota Vikings defense, however, Jalen Hurts really settled in, distributing one timely dart after another to both A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. They enjoyed their most fluid aerial attack in a long time.

Loser: The Titans

Was Tennessee right to move on from Mike Vrabel after the 2023 season? You can still make that case. But there's no denying Vrabel finds himself in a much better place than his former organization. Making their first appearance under the interim direction of Mike McCoy, the Titans once again lost the ball with rookie Cam Ward under center, gifting an easy win to Vrabel's Patriots.

Winner: Ben Johnson

The Chicago Bears aren't necessarily winning pretty. But any Chi-Town resident would've signed up for a 4-2 start in a heartbeat. Even with quarterback Caleb Williams posting a so-so stat line against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Johnson kept the ground game churning through both D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, while his defensive guru, Dennis Allen, also showed up.

Cover 32: Jets officially on 0-17 watch after Justin Fields benching, plus games balls and gaffes from Week 7

Tyler Sullivan dives into all the biggest items from Week 7 in the NFL, including Rashee Rice's explosive return

Denver Broncos v New York Jets - NFL 2025

Murphy/Getty Images

On the trip toward putting together a winning product, the New York Jets remain on perpetual standby. The club has yet to taste victory in 2025, dropping to 0-7 under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn. And Sunday's 13-6 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Panthers may have been rock bottom. The 0-7 mark is tied for the worst start to a season in franchise history through the first seven weeks, and there may be no relief in sight.
After managing just three points in the first half, Glenn pulled the escape hatch with Justin Fields, benching his veteran quarterback in place of Tyrod Taylor for the second half. Fields' day ended with him completing six of his 12 passes for 46 yards to go along. 22 yards rushing. With Taylor, the results weren't any better. The team managed another field goal, while Taylor tossed two interceptions and completed 10 of his 22 throws for 126 yards and zero touchdowns.

No matter which way you slice it, New York has the worst quarterback room in the NFL. Combine that with a defense that continuously surrenders an ill-timed big plays, a mountain of injuries (including Sauce Gardner being evaluated for a concussion in the midst of Week 7) piling up, and poor coaching, and it leads us to one question: Will the New York Jets win a game in 2025 or go 0-17?

It would mark the first time a team has gone winless in the NFL's 17-game format, and the first winless squad since the 2017 Cleveland Browns (0-16) and 2008 Detroit Lions (0-16).

What's so dire about New York's current situation is the road head. The first half of its schedule was front-loaded with home games. Four of their first seven games were played at MetLife Stadium, and they were also considered the home team in Week 6 when the Jets "hosted" the Denver Broncos in London. From here on out, the Jets play just four of their remaining 10 games at home.

On top of that, half of their remaining 10 opponents are .500 or better. While that may not seem so traitorous, just two of those under .500 clubs catch New York at MetLife Stadium: the Cleveland Browns (one of the best defenses in the NFL) in Week 9 and the Miami Dolphins (who beat them in Week 4) in Week 14. New York's other "soft" matchups include the Cincinnati Bengals next week on the road, the Ravens in Baltimore in Week 12 and the Saints in New Orleans in Week 16. None of those should be considered a gimmies.

Jets' remaining regular-season schedule

Week 11at New England Patriots

Week 13vs. Atlanta Falcons
Week 14vs. Miami Dolphins
Week 15at Jacksonville Jaguars
Week 16at New Orleans Saints
Week 17vs. New England Patriots
Week 18at Buffalo Bills
The two games that could prevent New York from making this type of negative history come in Week 14 when they host Miami and when they host Buffalo in the regular season finale.

The Dolphins are arguably just as abysmal as the Jets this season, but their lone win came against New York back in Week 4. With that game being at MetLife Stadium, it does present a realistic lane towards a win, and that may be the only game New York is favored in for the rest of the year. However, the Dolphins will be relatively well-rested for that matchup after recently being on the bye in Week 12.

Meanwhile, the Week 18 game is purely circumstantial. If the Bills (4-2) have their playoff seeding locked into place before taking the field in the finale, the Jets could be squaring off against backups and reserves. If Buffalo still has something to play for and New York remains winless heading into that game, history will be made. Outside of those two contests, we have the Jets firmly on 0-17 watch.

Even if New York finds a way into the win column at some point, it feels like this organization is once again going to be hitting the reset button, possibly from the front office down to the coaching staff and the quarterback.

These aren't the "Same ol' Jets."

They're worse.

Welcome back, Rashee Rice! The Chiefs wideout made his 2025 season debut following his six-game suspension, and it's safe to say Patrick Mahomes was happy to have his top wideout back. Rice was targeted a team-high 10 times in the club's 31-0 win over the Raiders. The receiver hauled in seven of those looks for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Those 10 targets were double the amount of any other pass-catcher on the day.

For the first time this season, Kansas City is above .500 and suddenly looks like the biggest threat in the AFC. As if there was any doubt.

Not one, not two, but THREE touchdowns for Davante Adams. With Puka Nacua sidelined, Adams was the go-to target for Matthew Stafford in the Rams' blowout win over the Jaguars in London. This was the third career game for Adams with a hat trick. Adams also became just the second player to score three touchdowns in an international game, joining Marcedes Lewis.

For the first time in the history of the NFL's international series, we have a five-touchdown passer, and his name is Matthew Stafford. The Rams QB erupted in London, tossing five scores on the day. This was the fifth career five-passing touchdown day for Stafford, which is tied for the eighth most in NFL history. Just as impressive, Stafford spread the ball out, completing at least one pass to 10 different pass-catchers.

Don't look now, but Stafford is a surging MVP candidate.

The Patriots are 5-2 on the year and getting elite play from Drake Maye. The second-year quarterback has had a knack for being hyper-efficient, and Week 7 was no exception. In the 31-13 demolition of the Titans, Maye completed 21 of his 23 passes. Per Patriots Communication, Maye set a franchise record for the highest completion percentage (91.3) in a single game (min. 20 attempts). The previous record was held by Tom Brady. Speaking of Brady, Maye has tied the legendary quarterback from his most prolific season.

All the talk about the lack of a passing attack from the Eagles will be silenced for a least one week after the Eagles' 28-22 over the Vikings. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith exploded for a combined 304 yards receiving and three touchdowns. That is the second-most receiving yards in a game as teammates (307 in 2022 at Bears). Smith carried the bulk of the load, logging a career-high 183 yards receiving. That included a 79-yard touchdown catch (the longest of his career).

The Green Bay Packers brought in Micah Parsons to be a game-wrecker and that was on full display in Week 7 as they outlasted the Cardinals. Specifically, Parsons was able to take down Jacoby Brissett during Arizona's final drive of the afternoon, helping Green Bay snuff the Cardinals' upset hopes. It was a vintage performance by McCaffrey as he helped San Francisco move to 5-2 on the season with a prime-time win over the Falcons. On top of finding the end zone twice, the star back also made some NFL history. He broke his tie with Marshall Faulk and Priest Holmes for the most games with 100-yards rushing and 70-yards receiving in NFL history with seven.

Notable Week 7 gaffes

Giants collapse twice

The New York Giants entered the fourth quarter with a 19-0 lead over the Denver Broncos at Mile High. From there, chaos ensued. Denver scored 33 points in the final period to pull off the 33-32 victory in dramatic fashion. Initially, it looked like the Broncos' comeback attempt was going to come in vein. After taking a 30-26 lead with 1:51 left to go in the game, a DPI penalty helped set the Giants up at the goal line to retake the lead.

However, after Jaxson Dart rushed for the score, kicker Jude McAtamney missed his second extra point of the afternoon. Suddenly, all Denver needed was a field goal to win the game.

It then took Denver just four plays to travel 56 yards down the field to set Will Lutz up for the game-winning 39-yard field goal, sending New York to 2-5.

The Titans shook things up this week by firing Brian Callahan, but there was still some sloppiness on the part of Ward. Despite playing New England tight for about two and a half quarters, the wheels fell off of due to Ward letting the ball slip out of his hands as he faced pressure from Patriots pass rusher K'Lavon Chaisson. He picked up the fumbled ball for a touchdown, creating a 31-13 deficit for Tennessee.

While the Jets are garnering most of the negative headlines in the AFC East, the Dolphins' implosion is right up there. Specifically, Tua Tagovailoa has put together dreadful performances, and Sunday's showing against the Browns may have been the worst. Tagovailoa completed 12 of his 23 passes for just 100 yards and three interceptions in what was a 31-6 defeat. His 24.1 passer rating is the lowest by any quarterback in a game this season (min. 15 pass attempts).

Kenny Pickett fumbles opportunity

The Raiders are broken on offense, and Geno Smith doesn't seem to be the answer. With seven minutes left in the 31-0 blowout against the Chiefs, Pete Carroll sent Smith to the bench for Kenny Pickett. One would think Pickett would want to use this opportunity to possibly push the conversation towards him getting a crack as the starter and put his best foot forward. Well, the opposite happened. On his very first snap, Pickett bobbled it, the ball hit the ground, and Kansas City recovered the fumble. Not exactly a compelling case for a quarterback change.

Michael Penix Jr.'s intentional grounding forces halftime

The Falcons continue to find odd ways to get us to halftime. This week, Atlanta found itself at the San Francisco 22-yard line and threatening to cut into the 10-3 lead before the break. With 17 seconds left on the clock, however, Michael Penix Jr. dropped back, faced pressure from the Niners rush, and threw the ball out of bounds. He was still in the tackle box, which triggered an intentional grounding penalty. Because the ball hit the ground at the 10-second mark, it meant that the corresponding 10-second runoff from the penalty ended the half. So, instead of a touchdown or, at least, a field goal, the Falcons ended up with no points for the drive.

Two-minute drill

Here are some of my quick-hitting takeaways/notes from Week 7:

  • Veteran coaches typically don't get much love in the Coach of the Year race, but it's hard to ignore Kyle Shanahan in 2025. Despite all the injuries to key members of the roster, the Niners are 5-2 and in first place in the NFC West coming out of Week 7. That includes a 3-0 record against their division rivals thus far.
  • Jacksonville should just commit to Travis Hunter (9-101-1 vs. Rams) as a wide receiver. The hybrid receiver-corner seems too messy, and the offense needs him more than the defense does.
  • Every contender needing help at wide receiver -- cough ... Buffalo Bills ... cough -- should be knocking down the door for Chris Olave. His deep-threat ability was on full display vs. Chicago, catching five of his seven targets for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Carson Wentz's play (2 INTs vs. Philly) may require Kevin O'Connell to bring back J.J. McCarthy a little bit earlier than he'd like -- maybe as soon as Thursday night vs. the Chargers.
  • Quinshon Judkins is the most impressive offensive rookie I've seen in 2025.
  • You may want to sell high if you have Bears stock. Their road ahead -- at Ravens, at Bengals, vs. Giants, at Vikings -- is not for the faint of heart. And it only gets tougher from there.
  • Rico Dowdle (79 yards rushing on 17 carries) should start for Carolina over Chuba Hubbard going forward.
  • Jonathan Taylor is making three-touchdown game look normal. Today was his third such game THIS SEASON! He should be the favorite for OPOY coming out of Week 7.
  • It may not matter that the Cowboys defense can't stop a nosebleed. Their offense can hang 40 on just about anyone, especially with CeeDee Lamb back in the fold.
  • The Cardinals have tired the 1984 Browns and 2017 49ers for the most consecutive losses by four or fewest points in NFL history (4). All seven of Arizona's games this season have been decided by 7 or fewest points.
  • Teams on the bye in Week 7: Buffalo and Baltimore.

Wednesday’s Den: Going off on a tangent…….

October 22 has been a memorable day for me:
Flash back to October 22, 1972; I was 12 years old, the A’s were playing Game 7 of the World Series in Cincinnati. Big day; when Joe Rudi caught a fly ball in left field for the last out, the A’s had won their first of three consecutive World Series. 12-year old me was very happy.
Some stuff about that game:

— Game 7 of that World Series started at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon; things have changed. All seven games in this year’s World Series will start at 8:00- none of the games are on a Sunday.

— Rollie Fingers got the last six outs for the save; back then, closers often got more than three outs to get a save. So when you hear people describe Mariano Rivera as “the best closer ever” remember that he almost always got three outs per game. Guys like Fingers and Bruce Sutter did more than that.

— Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter got eight outs and the win in Game 7, two days after he started Game 5; he was 7-2, 2.55 in 14 playoff games with the A’s. He threw a perfect game in May 1968.
So the A’s won the World Series, then the 4:00 NFL games came on TV; Rams wound up beating the Bengals 15-12 on a last-second field goal. All in all, October 22, 1972 was a very good day.
12-year old me was really, really happy.

Flash forward to October 22, 2019; on October 12, the retina in my right eye detached while I was in Las Vegas. I knew it was bad, but I had no idea what the problem was; I saw a few doctors when I got home, and on October 22, Dr Mallick fixed my retina.
Thanks for my cousins for driving me to the hospital that day.
I am forever grateful to Dr Mallick and Dr Lemanski (she did my cataract surgery 10 months later) for fixing my eye. Must be a cool job, helping people to see again.
Anyway, that is why October 22 stands out on the calendar for me.

Famous birthdays, October 22nd:
Christopher Lloyd, 87
Wilbur Wood, 84
Jeff Goldblum, 73
Jamie Quirk, 71
Bob Odenkirk, 63
Carmen Ejogo, 52
Ichiro Suzuki, 52
Jeff McInnis, 51
Leonard Marshall, 44
Robinson Cano, 43
Corbin Burnes, 31
Geraldo Perdomo, 26

— Thunder 125, Rockets 124, 2 OTs
Gilgeous-Alexander had 5 points at halftime, wound up with 35.
Thunder shot 13-52 on the src, 33-52 inside the arc.
Houston had 21 turnovers, Thunder only 11.
Alperen Sengun scored 39 points for Houston

— Kennesaw State 45, Florida International 26
Owls led 24-14 at half, snapped a 13-game road losing streak.
Both teams ran ball for 200+ yards.
Kennesaw played two QB’s, averaged 16.7 yards/pass attempt
QB Jenkins threw for 296 yards and a TD for FIU

— Western Kentucky 28, Louisiana Tech 27 OT
WKU scored TD, then scored on a 2-point conversion for the OT win.
Hilltoppers led 20-7 at halftime.
Tech outgained WKU 449-340; they were 10-19 on third down.
WKU is 6-2 and is now bowl eligible.

— Los Angeles Angels hired Kurt Suzuki as their new manager; Suzuki hit .255 in his 16-year career as a catcher, for five different teams. He was with the Washington Nationals when they won the 2019 World Series.
Suzuki has no professional coaching experience; the Angels have the longest playoff drought in the major leagues- they last made the postseason in 2014. Suzuki is the Angels’ fifth manager in eight years.

— Dodgers are -210 to win the World Series; Blue Jays are +175.

— Toronto P Trey Yesavage started this season in Class A ball; he threw 98 IP for four different minor league teams this year, then pitched 14 innings for Toronto in the regular season and has now thrown 15 more innings in the playoffs. Impressive season for the 21-year old.

— Blue Jays OF Vladimir Guerrero Jr is hitting .442 in this year’s playoffs, with 12 RBI in 11 games.

— Texas A&M (-2.5) @ LSU

Quote of the Day
“I don’t have any animosity toward the organization. Obviously, I wish that things had been better in our last year there, but I have a great relationship with a lot of people still in that organization, and this is not a revenge game for me.”
Aaron Rodgers, whose Steelers host Green Bay Sunday night

Wednesday’s quiz

Tuesday’s quiz

*********************************************

Thursday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— San Francisco Giants hired former Tennessee Vols coach Tony Vitelloas their new skipper, the first time a big league team has hired a manager directly from a college program without any experience as a professional coach. Vitello won the College World Series with the Vols in 2024.
Giants have missed the playoffs the last four years; they went 81-81 this past season.

— Sounds like there will be two Japanese sluggers moving to the major leagues next year.

Munetaka Murakami is a 3B/1B who has hit 246 home runs in 892 games for the Yakult Swallows, including a 56-homer season in 2022.
1B/3B Kazuma Okamoto has hit 248 home runs for the Yomiuri Giants, hitting 30+ homers six years in a row, from 2018-23. Okamoto hit two homers, had 7 RBI when Japan won the World Baseball Classic in 2023.

— Freddie Freeman has homered in six of his last seven World Series games.

— Baseball is expected to expand by two teams in the next four years; MLB hasn’t expanded since 1998 (Arizona/Tampa Bay). When the expansion happens, will realignment happen too?
Geographic realignment would cut down on travel costs, and probably raise attendance with more games between regional rivals.

— Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (hamstring) won’t play when the Commanders play in Kansas City Monday night. Backup Marcus Mariota will start his third game this year.

— NFL coaches’ instant replay challenges have succeeded 60% of time this year, compared to 39.6% at this time last year.
This season, coaches and club staffers in the coaching booth can watch the same camera feed as the replay official at the game, which has helped them make better decisions.

— Miami Dolphins won consecutive Super Bowls in the early 70’s; when they beat the Vikings 24-7 in the Super Bowl after the 1973 season, their QB, Bob Greise, threw only seven passes the whole game. Griese was 6-7/73 passing. Total yardage in the game was 259-238, Miami.
Football sure has changed a lot.
