TORONTO — It’s officially Week 5 and we’re starting to get a clearer picture of where each team stands.

That presents a unique challenge for the CFL.ca writers; do they pick the favourite or risk it all with the underdog?

Matt Cauz sits on top of the pick makers with a 12-4 record but only two games separate him and the three-way tie for last between Kristina Costabile, Jamie Nye, and Vicki Hall.

The Stampeders return from their bye to take on the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The majority of the pick makers think so and are predicting Vernon Adams Jr. and co. will hand the Bombers their first loss.

Edmonton keeping things close with the Blue Bombers last week, the game was tied heading into the fourth quarter, is giving the entire group enough confidence to pick the Elks to get their first win of 2025.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….​

— Whats the best day to have a birthday? I’m thinking the 4th of July has to be pretty high on the list. People shoot off fireworks, most everyone has the day off, the weather is usually good.
Few years ago, we did the best/worst days to have a birthday (February 29 is most definitely the worst). Sometime this summer, we’ll re-visit that topic.

— Duncan Robinson has played guard for the Miami Heat for the last seven years, scoring 11.3 ppg, mostly because he has shot 39.7% on the arc- shooting is marketable.
He just signed a 3-year, $48M deal with the Detroit Pistons, $16M a year.
Robinson has earned just over $73M in his career, which is amazing for one reason; the first year he was in college, he played at Williams, which plays Division III, non-scholarship ball. This new contract will put him at around $121M for his career.
There are many very good players at the D-III level, but the odds of someone playing D-III ball, then banking $120M+ playing in the NBA have to be astronomical.

— New York Knicks are expected to hire former Cavaliers/Lakers/Kings coach Mike Brown as their next head coach. Brown has a 454-304 record in regular season games, 50-40 in playoff games. He was an assistant coach for Spurs/Warriors teams that won NBA titles- his team in Cleveland got the NBA Finals in 2007, but lost in the Finals.
Knicks just had their best season in 25 years but fired coach Tom Thibodeau anyway.

— There will be at least five more years of labor peace in the NHL; the league and players agreed to a four-year extension of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which will carry through the 2029-30 season.

— Clayton Kershaw recorded his 3,000th career strikeout this week, the 20th pitcher to do it, only the 4th left-handed pitcher.

— Atlanta Braves P Spencer Schwellenbach broke his elbow, is out for an indefinite time. This year, Schwellenbach was 7-4, 3.09 in 17 starts.
Not sure how you break your elbow pitching, but this is yet another injury for an injury-ravaged Atlanta pitching staff.

Nathan Rourke to start for Lions, Davis Alexander ruled out for Als​

MONTREAL — There are a few quarterback updates leading into Week 5’s contest between the BC Lions and Montreal Alouettes.

Nathan Rourke will make his return to the BC Lions starting lineup, the team announced on Thursday.

On the other side, Montreal pivot Davis Alexander will miss a second-straight game on Saturday. According to the Alouettes official injury report issued on Thursday, Montreal’s starting quarterback has been listed as out for their game against the BC Lions. He was listed as a limited participant all week.

Rourke missed the last two games after leaving their Week 2 contest against Winnipeg in the fourth quarter with a core injury. The 27-year-old has thrown for 573 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception while also rushing 11 times for 112 yards and one major on the ground this year.

Jeremiah Masoli started both games in placed of Rourke, throwing for 454 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions over the pair of contests.

Alexander did not play in Week 4’s contest against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson started the game for Montreal in Hamilton last week, connecting on 24 of 41 passes for 203 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Before his injury, Alexander led the Als to a 3-0 record, completing 62 of 82 passes for 803 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.

The Als host the Lions as they look for their fourth win of the season at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be watched on TSN/RDS/CTV/CBSSN/CFL+.
