Tarik Skubal

NFL happenings……..(there are a lot of them)

— Dolphins let QB Tua Tagovailoa walk, taking on a $99.2M salary cap hit, the biggest one ever. Tagovailoa is moving to Atlanta- they’ll pay him $1.3M in 2026.

— Raiders signed C Tyler Linderbaum for three years, $81M, with $60M of that guaranteed; he becomes the highest-paid interior lineman ever.
Last year, the Raiders averaged 0.5 yards before contact/rush, the worst mark by ANY team since 2013. Linderbaum is expected to help fix that problem.

— Jets added seven players for a total cost of $93.2M; six of the seven players play defense.

— Titans were very busy, adding eight players, including two offensive linemen, two corners.

Anonymous NFL GM, talking about the Crosby non-trade

Tuesday’s quiz

Monday’s quiz
2008 was the last time a WCC team other than Gonzaga/Saint Mary’s won the conference tournament- San Diego won the tournament that year.

*************************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— 2026 NFL season starts officially on Wednesday at 4:00; Tuesday night, Baltimore Ravens backed out of their trade with Las Vegas to acquire pass rusher Maxx Crosby for two first round draft picks.

This is controversial; Crosby had surgery on the meniscus in his left knee on January 8; it was a meniscus repair, not a meniscus trim, so he needs more to recover from the operation, but the Ravens knew this.

— WCC tournament
Gonzaga 79, Santa Clara 68
Zags win WCC tourney for 12th time in the last 14 years,
Gonzaga shot 10-25 on arc; they were down 33-29 at halftime.
Broncos won 13 of their last 16 games; they’ll get in the Field of 68.
This was Santa Clara’s first WCC title game since 2007;

— Horizon tournament
Wright State 66, Detroit 63
Detroit led by 12 with 9:52 left in the game.
Raiders won the regular season title by two games.
Wright State is in the NCAA’s for the first time in four years.
Horizon champ hasn’t been higher than a 14-seed in NCAA’s since 2015.

— CAA tournament
Hofstra 75, Monmouth 69
Hofstra is in the NCAA’s for first time since 2001.
Monmouth led by 6 early in the second half.
Freshman G Edmead scored 26 points, had four assists.
Hofstra started CAA play 4-5, but has won 11 of its last 12 games.

— MAAC tournament
Siena 74, Merrimack 64
Saints get to the NCAA’s for first time since 2010.
Siena only used one sub the whole game; Merrimack used two.
Siena out-rebounded Merrimack, 50-26.

Famous birthdays, March 11th:
Alex Kingston, 63
Wallace Langham, 61
Bobby Abreu, 52
Elton Brand, 47
Dan Uggla, 46
Anthony Davis, 33
Jacob Lewis, 28
Jackson Chourio, 22

— Heat 150, Wizards 129
Bam Abedayo scored 83 points for Miami; he was 36-43 on foul line.
Washington’s whole team was 22-29 on the foul line.
Three Wizards fouled out; none of them started the game.
83 points is 2nd-most points ever scored in an NBA game (Wilt Chamberlain scored 100)

— New Jersey Jets traded a 6th-round draft pick to the Raiders; in return they got QB Geno Smith and a 7th-round pick. 35-year old Smith is 42-57 as a starter in his 12-year career, the first four years of which were spent with the Jets.

— A’s are playing their home games in Sacramento for two more years, before they into their new ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip in 2028, but they are playing six games in Las Vegas in June, three vs Milwaukee, three against the Rockies.
Games will be played at the Las Vegas Aviators’ AAA ballpark, in Summerlin, right by the Red Rock Casino, a few miles northwest of Las Vegas.

— Reds P Hunter Greene will have arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies from this throwing elbow, is expected to be out until at least July.
Last year, Greene was 7-4, 2.76 in 19 starts; the last two years, he is 16-9, 2.76 in 45 starts.

Movie of the Day: Blue Chips (1994)- A college basketball coach decides to skirt the rules, in order to recruit the players he needs to stay on top of the heap.

Nick Nolte is the coach, Bob Cousy is the school’s athletic director, Mary McDonnell, JT Walsh and Ed O’Neill are also in the movie, as well as a lot of well-known college/pro players/coaches. Rick Pitino coaches one of the teams against Western U. Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway are two of the players on Nolte’s team.

If you like basketball, you’ve probably already seen this, but if you haven’t, you’ll like it.

— ACC tournament
Pittsburgh 64, Stanford 63
Panthers out-rebounded Stanford, 41-28.
Damaging loss for Stanford; they probably slip off the bubble.
Panthers advance to play NC State at noon Wednesday.

SMU 86, Syracuse 69
SMU shot 57.5% inside arc, snap a four-game losing skid.
Syracuse shot 65.5% inside arc, 9-34 outside arc.

In three years since Jim Boeheim retired, Syracuse is 25-37 in ACC games.

Wake Forest 95, Virginia Tech 89, OT
Wake played eight guys; seven of them scored in double figures.
Tech out-rebounded the Deacons, 45-28.
Deacons advance to play Clemson Wednesday night.

— Big 18 tournament

Terrapins never trailed, led 33-12 at halftime.
Oregon lost 14 of its last 18 games.

Arizona State 83, Baylor 79
Sun Devils shot 71.9% inside the arc.
ASU advances to play Iowa State Wednesday.

Cincinnati 73, Utah 66
Utah led by nine at the second TV time-out.
Utes lost their last six in a row, and 13 of last 14 games.
Bearcats are 7-2 in last nine games, after starting 3-7 in Big X.

BYU 105, Kansas State 91
BYU shot 70.7% inside the arc.
K-State lost despite shooting 13-23 on the arc.
BYU advances to play West Virginia Wednesday.

— Big Sky tournament

#4-seed Grizzlies upset top-seeded Portland State.

Thursday’s 6-pack
Teams that won last six SEC tournaments:
2025— Florida
2024— Auburn
2023— Alabama
2022— Tennessee
2021— Alabama
2019— Auburn

Quotes of the Day
“We didn’t do well enough, coaching. We should’ve had him better prepared for the things that happened, and that wouldn’t have happened. I take a lot of responsibility in that. We didn’t prepare him well enough in the offseason even though he looked great and we felt we had everything lined up. It was very, very disappointing for us both.”
Pete Carroll, talking about Geno Smith’s disappointing 2025 season

Thursday’s quiz
Before they moved to California, where did the NBA’s Clippers call home?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the history of the Toronto Blue Jays, Dave Stieb is the pitcher who has the most wins.

Tuesday’s quiz
Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade played his college basketball at Marquette.

Thursday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Wednesday……

Famous birthdays, March 12th:
Barbara Feldon, 93
Jake Kupp, 85
Liza Minnelli, 80
Mark Moseley, 78
Dale Murphy, 70
Darryl Strawberry, 64
Titus Welliver, 64
Steve Finley, 61
Grant Long, 60
Aaron Eckhart, 58
JP Losman, 45
Nick Kurtz, 23

— One of the most underrated athletes of the last 40 years is Charlie Ward, who won the 1993 Heisman Trophy as a QB at Florida State. Ward didn’t play in the NFL, but he did play 12 years in the NBA, mostly with the Knicks, and these days he’s the basketball coach at Florida A&M in the SWAC. His Rattlers finished 11-7 in the SWAC this year, won their SWAC tourney game 70-60 Wednesday night.

— Indianapolis Colts signed QB Daniel Jones for two years, $88M, with $50M of that money guaranteed. Jones is recovering from a torn Achilles, but is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season; he was 8-5 as the Colts’ QB last year, after going 25-45-1 in six years with the Giants.

— QB’s Kirk Cousins/Kyler Murray both got released Wednesday; one of them is expected to wind up as the Vikings’ QB this coming season, the other one could wind up in Las Vegas as a bridge to rookie QB Fernando Mendoza, likely the Raiders’ #1 pick in the draft.

— When Orioles’ catcher Adley Rutschman was in college at Oregon State, he was a kicker for the Beavers for one year— he specialized in kickoffs. Oregon State recovered two of the three onside kicks he tried.
When Rutschman was in high school, he once made a 63-yard field goal.

Movie of the Day: Love Happens (2009)- A best-selling author becomes a motivational speaker, talking about dealing with grief. Aaron Eckhart plays the author, Jennifer Aniston plays a florist he meets in the hotel where his seminars are. Martin Sheen plays the father of the author’s wife, who died in a car accident.
This is a nice movie; we need more nice in the world.

— Big XII tournament
Iowa State 91, Arizona State 42
Cyclones forced 23 turnovers, led 45-16 at the half.
Iowa State plays Texas Tech on Thursday.
After the game, ASU fired Coach Bobby Hurley, after 11 years.

— SWAC tournament
Prairie View 71, Bethune-Cookman 67
#8-seed Prairie View upsets top-seeded Bethune-Cookman
Prairie View outscored Wildcats 13-4 over the last 3:33 of the game.

— C-USA tournament
Missouri State 77, Liberty 69
Liberty won C-USA regular season by four games, loses its tournament opener.
Missouri State shot 58.8% inside the arc.
Bears were 8-16 on the arc, Liberty 9-31.

— Big East tournament
Providence 91, Butler 81
Butler led 27-11 midway thru the first half.
Providence shot 14-27 behind the arc.
Friars play St John’s in the first game Thursday.

— Big 18 tournament
Northwestern 74, Indiana 61
Damaging loss for bubble team Hoosiers, who lost six of last seven games.
Indiana led by 9 at halftime, 37-36 at the half.
Northwestern plays Purdue Thursday.

Friday’s 6-pack
Teams that won last six Big East tournaments:
2025— St John’s
2024— UConn
2023— Marquette
2022— Villanova
2021— Georgetown
2019— Villanova

Quotes of the Day
“I apologize to absolutely no one. Period. There was a moment, and when there’s a moment in time like that, it’s carpe diem (Latin for ‘seize the day’). You have to go for it, and that was just thrilling. And I’m honored that we were all able to be a part of it.”
Erik Spoelstra, talking about Bam Abedayo scoring 83 points in a game

Friday’s quiz
Which major league baseball team drafted Kyler Murray as an outfielder?

Thursday’s quiz
Before they moved to California, the NBA’s Clippers were the Buffalo Braves.

Wednesday’s quiz
In the history of the Toronto Blue Jays, Dave Stieb is the pitcher who has the most wins.

Friday’s Den: Wrapping up a big day of college basketball…….

— If I was a kid now, I’d fail Geography class.

Big EAST Conference has 11 teams in it. All in the EAST, right? Umm…..no

Big EAST Conference has teams in:
Illinois (DePaul)
Indiana (Butler)
Ohio (Xavier)
Nebraska (Creighton)
Wisconsin (Marquette)

Does this matter in the conference tournament, which is always in Madison Square Garden in New York City?
DePaul is 6-18 in the Big East tournament
Butler is 4-12 in the Big East tournament
Xavier is 10-13 in the Big East tournament
Creighton is 11-12 in the Big East tournament
Marquette is 17-19 in the Big East tournament (won tourney in 2023).
In fairness, since 2012, St John’s, the host team, is 11-12 in the tournament, but they are also 5-1 since Rick Pitino became coach.

— Big XII tournament
Kansas 78, TCU 73
Jayhawks were 30-37 on foul line, TCU 14-18
Horned Frogs led by 4 with 7:55 left in the game.
Elmarko Jackson was 10-10 on foul line, 1-3 from floor.

Houston 73, BYU 66
BYU led by 7 late in the first half.
BYU shot only 38.2% inside the arc.
Houston won its fourth straight game, scoring 84.3 ppg.
Big XII had a new court for this tournament, an LED glass court that was innovative, but some teams complained that court was slippery, so the league will be using a hardwood court for the rest of the tournament.

— MAC tournament
UMass 87, Miami 83
After a 31-0 regular season, Miami loses their first MAC tourney game.
Miami led by 11 with 8:33 left in the game.
UMass had a 41-24 edge on the boards.

— ACC tournament
Clemson 80, North Carolina 79
Clemson led by 18 with 11:36 left in the game.
First time since 2008 the Tigers won 2+ game in an ACC tourney.
First time since 2014 the Tar Heels lost their first ACC tourney game.

Duke 80, Florida State 79
FSU had ball at the end with chance to win, but missed their shot.
Seminoles shot 65.4% inside arc, scored 1.17 ppp.
Duke had a 46-25 edge on the boards.
Duke really only played six guys; a 7th guy played 8:00.

Miami 78, Louisville 73
Hurricanes are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Louisville shot 65.5% inside arc, only 6-24 outside arc.
Cardinals split their last eight games, after a 19-6 start.

— Big East tournament
St John’s 85, Providence 72
St John’s never trailed, led 48-27 at halftime.
Red Storm has won 17 of its last 18 games.
St John’s had a 51-30 edge on the boards.

— SEC tournament
Tennessee 72, Auburn 62
Auburn led by 10 with 11:20 left in the game.
From that point on, Tennessee outscored them, 33-13
17-16 Auburn won’t be happy on Sunday, when they go to the NIT.

— Mountain West tournament
Utah State 80, UNLV 60
UNLV beat #1-seed Aggies twice during regular season, but lost here.
Utah State forced 19 turnovers, shot 56.8% inside arc.
MW tournament is held in Las Vegas, but Rebels haven’t won it since 2008.

— QB Kyler Murray signed a one-year deal with the Vikings; Murray was 38-49-1 as a starter in seven years with the Cardinals. Arizona will be paying $35.5M of his salary this season, Vikings will be paying him $1.3M.
Cardinals-Vikings do not play each other this season.

— Some TV network would be wise to hire former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll as a game analyst; he has a lot of positive energy. I think we’d learn a lot from him.

— During one of the college basketball games this week, the analyst kept referring to of the players as “a winner” which bothered me. For every “winner” there is a “loser” and I refuse to believe that anyone is automatically a loser.

Famous birthdays, March 13th:
William H Macy, 76
Dana Delany, 70
Mariano Duncan, 63
Will Clark, 62
Aaron Cox, 61
Trent Dilfer, 54
Johan Santana, 47
Caron Butler, 46
Byron Young, 28
Mark Leiter Jr., 35

— Big 18 tournament
Wisconsin 85, Washington 82
Badgers were 15-39 outside arc, 16-30 inside arc.
6-4 junior Blackwell scored 34 points, had 10 rebounds.
In two years in the Big 18, Washington is 11-30 in conference games.

— Atlantic 14 tournament
St Bonaventure 63, George Mason 57
Bonnies were 18-25 on foul line, George Mason 3-6
Patriots are 5-8 in last 13 games, after a 13-1 start.
Bonnies’ coach Mark Schmidt is retiring after 19 years in Ocean; he is an outstanding coach. Get a map, and find Olean, NY (southern tier of central New York, near the Pennsylvania border). Schmidt getting the Bonnies to three NCAA tournaments is impressive; how the hell did he ever get players to go to school there?

— American Conference tournament
North Texas 74, Florida Atlantic 70
Lot of fouls; North Texas was 27-43 on line, FAU 23-33.
Teams combined to shoot 5-29 on the arc.
Mean Green won seven of their last nine games.

— Conference USA tournament
Louisiana Tech 80, Middle Tennessee 69
Tech never trailed; they were +7 (16-9) in turnovers.
Loss snapped Middle Tennessee’s five-game win streak.
Bulldogs play Missouri State Friday afternoon.

— Big West tournament
Northridge 80, Cal-San Diego 70
Tritons led by nine early in second half.
Larry Hughes Jr was 14-25 from floor, had one assist. His job is to shoot.
Matadors play Cal-Irvine in semis; they haven’t made NCAA’s since 2009.

— WAC tournament
Tex-Arlington 69, Southern Utah 63
Brickfest; teams shot a combined 9-48 on the arc.
Mavericks were 18-23 on foul line, SUU 7-10.
Arlington plays Utah Valley in semifinals Friday.
