Flores lifts D-Backs over Rays in 13
May 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Wilmer Flores snapped a 13th-inning tie with an RBI single, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks end a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

Eduardo Escobar made up for a crucial throwing error, leading off the 13th with a single off Adam Kolarek (2-1) - Arizona's first hit since the fifth inning. He moved to second on a double-play grounder before scoring on Flores' two-out broken-bat hit to right field off Chaz Roe.

Archie Bradley (2-3) pitched three scoreless innings to get the win. Zack Godley, the eighth Diamondbacks pitcher, worked a perfect 13th for his first career save.

Arizona pitchers combined to set a franchise record with 23 strikeouts.

The Rays rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force extra innings, scoring on Escobar's eighth-inning error and Kevin Kiermaier's two-out, pinch-hit single in the ninth.

CUBS 3, MARLINS 2, 11 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Heyward homered leading off the 11th inning to lift surging Chicago over Miami in Addison Russell's return to the majors following a 40-game ban for violating MLB's domestic violence policy.

Heyward lined a 1-2 pitch from Jose Quijada (0-1) into the basket in left field, helping Chicago hang on after blowing a 2-1 lead in the ninth. Carl Edwards Jr. (1-1), recalled from the minors Monday, pitched a perfect 11th with two strikeouts to get the win.

The Cubs won their second straight game on a walk-off shot. Kris Bryant hit a three-run drive in the ninth Tuesday in a 5-2 win.

Kyle Hendricks allowed an unearned run and five hits over eight innings. Javier Baez drove in a run, and Anthony Rizzo had two hits and sparkling fielding plays on two bunts as Chicago won for the ninth time in 10 games.

RED SOX 2, ORIOLES 1, 12 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Andrew Benintendi homered in the 12th inning, and Boston received a masterful pitching performance from Chris Sale and a game-saving catch from Jackie Bradley Jr.

With their fifth win in six games, the Red Sox reached .500 (19-19) for the first time since they were 1-1.

Benintendi connected off Yefry Ramirez (0-1) after the game appeared to have reached its conclusion in the bottom of the 11th, when Trey Mancini hit a drive to deep center. Bradley ran back, dug his right foot into the barrier for leverage and reached far over the 7-foot wall to snag the ball.

Mancini tipped his helmet to Bradley to acknowledge the catch, which enabled Ryan Brasier (2-1) to earn the victory. Heath Hembree struck out the side in the 12th for his first save.

BREWERS 7, NATIONALS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich hit his major leading-leading 16th home run and Milwaukee won its sixth straight game, beating Washington.

The Nationals lost all three at Miller Park, marking the first time they've been swept this season, and have dropped four in a row overall.

Washington loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning, but Josh Hader struck out pinch-hitter Kurt Suzuki and Adam Eaton for his 10th save in 10 chances. Mike Moustakas and Manny Pina also connected for Milwaukee, which leads the National League with 65 home runs.

Yelich's solo homer came on the fourth pitch of the game from Jeremy Hellickson (2-1). The reigning NL MVP finished with three hits and scored twice.

Brandon Woodruff (5-1) struck out a career-high nine while notching his third straight win. He gave up one run in six innings.

INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 3

RANGERS 9, PIRATES 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Hunter Pence connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning and Isiah Kiner-Falefa drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth as Texas rallied past Pittsburgh.

Kiner-Falefa doubled off Tyler Lyons (1-1) and an offline relay throw allowed Nomar Mazara to score. Rougned Odor followed with a two-run homer.

Ariel Jurado (1-1) worked the eighth and got the ball to Chris Martin, who earned his first save of the season and first since 2015.

Joey Gallo gave Texas the early lead with a two-run shot that bounced off the concourse beyond the right-center field wall and landed in the Allegheny River. The estimated 443-foot blast was Gallo's 100th career home run in his 377th game, making him the fastest player to 100 homers in American League history. He also became the first player in major league history to hit 100 home runs before reaching 100 singles (he has 93).

Pirates first baseman Josh Bell's estimated 472-foot drive tied the game in the fourth inning and is the fourth ever to reach the river on a fly.

MARINERS 10, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Yusei Kikuchi was brilliant on the mound in his Yankee Stadium debut, Ryon Healy had four extra-base hits and Seattle routed New York.

Healy homered and hit three doubles to help the Mariners win for only the second time in 10 games. Mitch Haniger and Edwin Encarnacion also went deep as Seattle (20-19), which opened 13-2 this year, avoided dropping below .500 for the first time since the final day of the 2017 season.

Kikuchi (2-1) pitched three-hit ball over 7 2/3 innings. After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he was aware cameras showed a dark substance - perhaps illegal pine tar - smudged under the brim of the rookie's cap.

Encarnacion had a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo shot off Jonathan Loaisiga (1-1) in the fifth.

DDOGERS 9, BRAVES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Enrique Hernandez, Max Muncy and Justin Turner each homered, and Los Angeles beat Atlanta for its 10th straight win at home, where it earned a third consecutive sweep.

Clayton Kershaw (2-0) gave up four runs and a season-high nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-low four and walked one to remain unbeaten in 11 career starts against the Braves.

The Dodgers took an early 3-0 lead against Mike Foltynewicz (0-2). Hernandez homered into the left field pavilion with two outs in the second. Muncy's blast to right came in the third.

The Braves pulled to 3-2 in the fourth on Ronald Acuna Jr.'s two-run homer.

PHILLIES 5, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jerad Eickhoff allowed three hits in eight innings, Cesar Hernandez homered and drove in three and Philadelphia beat St. Louis.

Aided by a pair of double plays, Eickhoff (2-1) faced just two batters over the minimum through the first seven innings as the NL East-leading Phillies took two of three from the Cardinals.

After winning 20 of their first 30 games, the Cardinals lost for the sixth time in their last seven.

Jack Flaherty (3-3) faced just one batter over the minimum in his first four innings before getting derailed by a 43-pitch fifth.

ASTROS 9, ROYALS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Michael Brantley homered twice, Brad Peacock pitched seven innings and Josh James completed the three-hitter in Houston's win.

Peacock (3-2) allowed three hits and set a career high with 12 strikeouts to help the Astros bounce back after a 12-2 loss on Tuesday night. Peacock also rebounded after allowing seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his previous start. James struck out five in the last two innings.

George Springer and Carlos Correa also homered to give the Astros 16 home runs combined in their past five games.

Houston led 2-0 with one out and one on in the third when Brantley sent a pitch from Jorge Lopez (0-4) into the seats in right field behind the bullpen to make it 4-0.

PADRES 3, METS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking solo shot in the seventh inning, center fielder Manuel Margot robbed Pete Alonso of a homer and San Diego beat New York.

Eric Hosmer also went deep for San Diego, Matt Strahm pitched into the seventh and Gerardo Reyes (2-0) got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Strahm got a big assist from Margot, who jumped in front of the home bullpen to bring back Alonso's drive for the last out in the sixth.

Kirby Yates allowed an infield single and a walk with two outs in the ninth but struck out Tomas Nido to finish his 15th save.

Renfroe's shot against reliever Tyler Bashlor (0-1) was his ninth of the year and came three days after his game-ending, pinch-hit grand slam sank the Dodgers.

TWINS 9, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Jorge Polanco had his second career five-hit game, including a two-run home run, Kyle Gibson (3-1) struck out a career-high 11 and Minnesota beat Toronto, completing a three-game sweep.

Eddie Rosario hit his AL-leading 13th home run, one of four long balls by the Twins. Minnesota had 18 hits, one shy of its season high. C.J. Cron had a two-run homer among his four hits and Jonathan Schoop added a two-run shot.

Toronto has lost a season-high five straight and eight of nine overall. Trent Thornton (0-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in two-plus innings, the shortest start of his brief career.

TIGERS 10, ANGELS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Ronny Rodriguez drove in a career-high four runs and Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings, helping Detroit beat Los Angeles.

Boyd (4-2) allowed only one run on David Fletcher's leadoff homer and just two more hits after the blast to left.

Shohei Ohtani, who was 0 for 4 for Los Angeles in his season debut Tuesday, was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and was hit on his right elbow by a pitch. Tyler Skaggs (3-3) gave up eight runs - seven earned - on eight hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

? Indians are 14-7 outside their division, but only 5-9 vs AL Central rivals.

? Warriors 104, Rockets 99? Kevin Durant strained a calf muscle, will probably miss Game 6.

? Bucks 116, Celtics 91? Milwaukee is in Final Four for first time since 2001.

? Hey, sports betting is legal in Indiana now. It isn?t legal yet here in New York.

? UConn, Louisville, Indiana, and Texas Tech will be the four teams at the 2019 Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in December.

? NBA teams that win Game 5 of a playoff series with a 2-2-1-1-1 format have won that series 162 of 189 times (85.7%).

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Kawhi Leonard has played in all ten of Toronto?s playoff games this spring, playing 36.6 minutes a game; no nights off for ?load management? He has been great.

During the regular season, Leonard sat out 22 games, played 34 mpg when he did play; is this a hint of things to come? Stars taking periodical days off to reduce the stress of a long season?

Steve Kerr suggested the regular season be cut back from 82 to 75 games, for that reason. As long as the players? salaries get reduced by the same %age as the games are reduced, I?d be OK with it.

Taking games off when you?re not hurt is BS? people might be spending lot of money to take their kids to see a guy play, and then he doesn?t, for no reason. It is bad business.

12) Texas Rangers? DH Joey Gallo is first big leaguer ever to hit 100 home runs before he hit 100 singles; he hit his 100th homer Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

11) From Baylor?s Twitter account:

?Baylor Athletics is thrilled to announce a lead gift for the Baylor Basketball Pavilion. This new facility will be made possible thanks to recently publicized $100 million anonymous gift as a part of Baylor University?s Give Light Campaign.?

Someone gave Baylor $100M; 100 million freakin? dollars. Wow.

10) One of the funny things about watching baseball on TV every night is when a team is doing badly, their TV guys quickly transition to other stuff, like the local team?s NBA/NHL playoff games, or the team?s concessions stands, or the bobblehead giveaway next week, or next month.

Can?t be easy for these guys when a team sucks or is struggling; they travel with the team, with social media nowadays, any criticism they say on air gets back to the players quickly, but the job is to tell the truth, too. Delicate balance that some do way better than others.

9) ?If I ain?t starting, then I?ll be departing?.?

Matthew Baldwin could?t beat Justin Fields out for the QB job at Ohio State, so he is gone to TCU, where he will sit out this season, meaning he will have sat out for two years in a row after he started for only one year in high school in Lake Travis, TX.

8) We talked yesterday about CBSSports.com?s ranking the power 5 college football coaches; they listed #1-25 Wednesday, with Washington?s Chris Petersen #3, behind Saban/Swinney. Lincoln Riley was #4, Jimbo Fisher #5.

7) They somehow list Duke?s David Cutcliffe at #21; if Cutcliffe is such a great coach, how come he can?t recruit competent WR?s? All I heard in the New York media during/after the draft was how terrible Duke?s WR?s were. Shouldn?t the #21 coach in the country be able to coach ?em up better than they?ve been?

6) College basketball transfer portal:
? DJ Harvey bolts from Notre Dame to Vanderbilt.
? Vermont lands grad transfer Daniel Giddens from Alabama.

5) Florida Gators inked a home/home football series with Colorado; Buffs will visit Gainesville in 2028, the Gators will visit Boulder in 2029. What is interesting about this? It will be the first time Florida has left the Sunshine State for a true non-conference road game (non-bowl game) since losing at Syracuse in 1991.

4) Paul George had rotator cuff surgery since Oklahoma City was eliminated from the NBA playoffs, is going to have another operation on the other shoulder, and is expected to miss at least part of training camp next fall.

3) Toronto?s Trent Thornton used to be on my fantasy team; he was cut during his horrendous start last night against the Twins.
His four starts when he was in my lineup: 0-3, 9.00 ERA, 2.13 WHIP
His four starts when he was on my bench: 0-1, 2.42 ERA, 0.85 WHIP
Enough already.

2) Mike Fiers has started 162 major league games; he finished two of them, both of them no-hitters, throwing 134-131 pitches. Hell of a performance late Tuesday night.

1) Doug Kern came up with some great no-hitter knowledge:

Mike Fiers: First pitcher to throw his second no-hitter since Jake Arrieta 2015-16.

Fiers? second one was against the Reds.
Arrieta?s second one was against the Reds.

Final out of Fiers? second one: Eugenio Suarez.
Final out of Arrieta?s second one: Eugenio Suarez.

Everything's Big In Texas

The Rangers and Astros hook up in Houston, and a lot of runs are sure to follow with LHP Mike Minor and LHP Wade Miley locking horns. The over is 12-3-1 in the past 16 games overall for the Rangers, while going 10-1-1 in the past 12 games against teams with a winning overall record. The over is 7-0-1 in their past eight outings on the road, too, while going 5-0-1 in the past six against American League West Division foes. The over is also 5-0-1 in the past six on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. However, the under is 7-2 in Minor's past nine inside the division, while the under is 10-4-2 in the past 16 on the road againnt teams vs. LHP. The under has also cashed in each of Minor's past four against the Astros.

The over is 5-0-1 in Houston's past six games overall, while going 5-0-1 in their past six on a grass surface, too. In addition, the over is 4-0 in the past four games for Houston inside the division. While the over is 3-1-1 in the past five at home vs. LHP, the under is 7-3 in the past 10 games overall against southpaws. In this series, the under is 5-2 in the past seven meetings overall, too. As an added bonus, the Rangers have won four of the past five overall, and six of the past eight meetings at 'The Juice Box'.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, May 9

The Mariners and Yankees square off at the stadium in the Bronx, and it's RHP Mike Leake and LHP JA Happ locking horns. The over is 33-16-2 across the past 51 games overall for the Mariners, and 6-1 in their past seven tries against teams from the American League East. In addition, the over is 18-7-1 in their past 26 games on the road. With Leake on the bump, the over is 7-1 in his past eight outings, and the over is 4-0 in Leake's past four road assignments. The over is also 19-7 in their past 26 attempts vs. LHP. For the Yankees, the over is 10-4 in their past 14 games overall, while cashing in six of the past eight at home. The over is also 16-6 across the past 22 against winning teams. The over is also 8-2 in Happ's past 10 starts overall, while hitting in four of his past five at home and each of the past four against teams with a winning record.

The Braves and Diamondbacks kick off a four-game set in the desert. The over is 5-2 in the past seven meetings between these sides, while going 21-8-2 in the past 31 meetings in Arizona. The over is also 5-1-1 in the past seven games overall, while going 4-1-1 in the past six on the road. The over is 5-0-1 in the past six on the road against teams with a winning overall record, too. For Arizona, the over is 5-1 in their past six games overall, and 5-2 in the past seven against NL East foes. However, the under is 11-5 in the past 16 for Arizona vs. RHP, and 12-5-1 in the past 18 against teams with a losing overall record.

Wind Report

There will be a stiff wind blowing 16-19 mph from right field to home plate, although the precipitation will move out in time, so that's the good news. Check out the under, which is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings at Comerica, and 5-2 in the past seven overall in this series.

The winds will be blowing out in Cleveland and Chicago. At Progressive Field for the White Sox and Indians, the wind will be blowing 15-18 mph out to the right-center field power alley, while the Marlins and Cubs will experience winds 12-15 mph blowing to straightaway center field at Wrigley. In St. Louis, the Pirates and Cardinals will see winds gusting 11-14 mph out to right field.

Friday, May 10

RHP Dylan Covey takes the ball for the White Sox against RHP Clay Buchholz. Covey has an 0-1 record and 4.50 ERA in his two starts so far, with the over cashing in each of the outings. Buchholz has struggled with his new team, turning in an 0-2 record and 6.57 ERA across 24 2/3 innings. The under is actually 3-2 over his five outings, but that's a product of poor offensive support rather than good pitching. He has allowed at least one homer in four straight starts (five total).

Mariners RHP Erik Swanson makes his first-career starts at Fenway Park against . The over has connected in each of Swanson's past three outings, as he has allowed four homers across the past 15 2/3 innings. Overall he has a 1-3 record and 4.94 ERA, and he has a mediocre 1.40 WHIP across his past three outings. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez is on the bump for the BoSox, as he looks to improve on his 3-2 record and 5.40 ERA. The Red Sox offense really seems to get up for his starts, posting six or more runs of support in each outing, including 11.7 runs per game over his past three outings.

The Reds and Giants battle at Oracle Park, and Cincinnati is reeling after being no-hit this week in Oakland. They turn to RHP Luis Castillo, who has seen the under cash in four of his past five outings. However, he faced San Francisco in his last start, allowing four earned runs, four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision. That game resulted in his only over in the past five starts dating back to April 9. RHP Dereck Rodriguez is tentatively set to start Friday's game. He has a 3-4 record, 5.75 ERA and .333 on-base percentage allowed, including eight earned runs, eight hits and four walks with four homers allowed in just five innings in a loss and over result in Cincinnati last time out on May 4.

Wind Report

The Mariners and Red Sox will see the weather moving out at or around game time, and if they get the game underway they'll see winds blowing 12-15 mph directly at the Green Monster in left field. In Queens, the Marlins and Mets will see gusting winds from 10-13 mph blowing out to the left-center field power alley.

Outside of those two trouble spots, the preciptiation will stay away and the winds will be neutral, not affecting totals.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Mike Soroka, Atlanta Braves (3-1, 1.14 ERA, $138):
The Braves coveted pitching prospect is getting his 2019 campaign off to a fantastic start. Soroka has a 1.14 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP while racking up 27 punchouts in 23.2 innings pitched over four starts. He?ll look to keep it going in the desert tonight as he takes on the Diamondbacks. The Braves are basically a Pick?em against the team that defeated Soroka in his season debut, where he allowed just one run on four hits in five innings.

SLUMPING

Derek Holland, San Francisco Giants (1-4, 5.34 ERA, $-385):
Holland has come back down to Earth after a solid start this season. The Giants have lost his three previous starts thanks to his 7.31 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in those contests. Holland has also allowed four home runs in those three starts and has allowed at least one dinger in all six of his starts. He and the Giants are +130 road dogs today in Colorado.

3 STRIKES

HOME RUN HAPP

After a solid start against the San Francisco Giants, in which he allowed only five hits through seven innings, New York Yankees starter J.A. Happ fell back into his bad habits in his most recent effort. Those bad habits being lit up by the long ball. Happ served up two home runs in a loss to the Minnesota Twins last Saturday, pushing his dinger damage to nine already in 2019.

In fact, those seven scoreless innings versus San Francisco on April 27 was the first start all season in which the veteran southpaw has not allowed a homer and the lone homer-less outing in his last 10 appearances, going back to 2018. Digging into last season?s stats, Happ has allowed 20 home runs in his 17 starts since being acquired by the Yankees at the end of July 2018.

Today?s foes, the Seattle Mariners, rank tops in the majors in home runs (74) and veteran slugger Edwin Encarnacion already has two round-trippers in this series. He?s priced at +221 to hit a home run Thursday and is swinging a hot bat with four homers in his last five games.

SNAKES ON A PLANE

The Arizona Diamondbacks won?t have much down time to recover from their recent six-game road trip, which wrapped up on the East Coast in Tampa Bay Wednesday afternoon. The D-backs were forced into extra innings in Game 3 versus the Rays (winning 3-2 in 13 innings), not leaving much room for a cross-country plane ride home and prep for tonight?s stand against the Atlanta Braves (-106).

Arizona, which snapped a three-game losing skid with Wednesday?s win, went seven arms deep into the bullpen after getting 5 2-3 innings from starter Robbie Ray Wednesday. Luke Weaver gets the call for Thursday, having struggled in front of the D-backs faithful. He?s 0-1 with a 4.60 ERA inside Chase Field.

LOW FIVE

The Los Angeles Dodgers welcome the Washington Nationals Thursday, opening a four-game set. The Dodgers put opponents on their heels early into contests, outscoring teams 3.08 to 2.05 over the first five innings of action. That urgency was boosted in its recent three-game series with Atlanta, outscoring the Braves by an average of 5.00 to 0.67 runs in the opening five frames.

Washington comes into Thursday with an average of 2.44 runs for in the first five innings but have plated just two total runs in the opening five over its last three outings ? a series sweep at the hands of the Brewers. The Nationals allowed nine runs against in that same span.

The Dodgers are -145 favorites to win the first five innings Thursday.

Rockies rally past Giants in snowy weather
May 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Nolan Arenado homered among his three hits and Chris Iannetta hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning to lead the Colorado Rockies over the San Francisco Giants 12-11 on Thursday on a cold, sometimes wintry day at Coors Field.

Arenado reached base five times, starting with his 10th home run. Ian Desmond and Mark Reynolds also homered.

The announced temperature at first pitch was 39 degrees and a steady snow fell in the first inning.

Colorado won despite two home runs and a career-best six RBIs by Giants first baseman Tyler Austin. He hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a three-run shot in the sixth off Bryan Shaw (2-0) to tie the game at eight.

Iannetta put Colorado back in front against reliever Tyler Beede (0-1) in the sixth, and pinch-hitter Daniel Murphy singled off Austin's glove to put the Rockies ahead 11-8.

Both teams scored a run in the eighth and the Giants got two more in the ninth off Wade Davis before he struck out Stephen Volt for his sixth save.

ANGELS 13, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Albert Pujols became the third player with 2,000 career RBIs, hitting a solo homer in the third inning in Los Angeles' rout of Detroit.

Pujols, Hank Aaron (2,297) and Alex Rodriguez (2,086) are the only players to reach the milestone since 1920. Babe Ruth is credited with 1,992 RBIs. Baseball's official records don't count the runs he drove in with Boston from 1914 through 1919.

Ryan Carpenter (0-1) threw Pujols a fastball and the slugger sent the 2-0 pitch deep into the right-field seats.

Angels starter Luke Bard pitched one inning, allowing two hits. Felix Pena (2-1) followed, giving up three hits and striking out seven.

Shohei Ohtani ended his 0-for-7 start with an RBI single in the two-run first. He finished 2 for 4.

Tommy La Stella hit his first of two homers, a two-run shot in the three-run second inning. Kole Calhoun hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

CUBS 4, MARLINS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo homered and Chicago beat Miami for its 10th win in 11 games.

Bryant sparked a two-run first with his sixth homer in 12 games. Rizzo connected for the sixth time in 11 games with a two-run drive in the fifth against Trevor Richards.

The Cubs overcame another shaky outing by Yu Darvish, who walked six n just four innings. Though he allowed just one run and one hit, only 50 of his 97 pitches were strikes.

Mike Montgomery (1-0) threw three-hit ball over five scoreless innings in his return from a strained lat muscle and the NL Central leading Cubs headed into a weekend series against second-place Milwaukee on a winning note.

The major league-worst Marlins lost for the 10th time in 12 games, and Richards (0-5) remained winless in eight starts. The right-hander gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings.

YANKEES 3, MARINERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, Cameron Maybin contributed with his bat and glove, and New York beat Seattle.

The Yankees won for the fourth time in five games and headed to Tampa Bay to play the AL East-leading Rays for the first time this year.

Domingo Santana homered with two outs in the ninth inning for Seattle, which has dropped nine of 11. The Mariners also lost second baseman Dee Gordon, who exited early after being hit around the right wrist by Happ's pitch.

Happ (2-3) gave up one hit, a single by Tom Murphy in the fifth, and struck out seven. Aroldis Chapman got his eighth save in nine chances.

Mike Leake (2-4) allowed six hits in eight effective innings. He walked none and struck out two.

REDS 3, ATHLETICS 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Derek Dietrich hit his fifth homer in six games, and Cincinnati snapped a 10-game interleague losing streak with a win over Oakland.

Tanner Roark and three relievers combined on a six-hitter to help the Reds avoid being swept by the A's for the first time since 2004.

Eugenio Suarez homered and doubled twice for the Reds.

Roark (3-1) allowed three hits over six innings and got the A's to hit into a pair of double plays while winning his third consecutive start. Roark walked two and struck out three.

Amir Garrett retired two batters, David Hernandez set down four and Raisel Iglesias pitched through a shaky ninth for his seventh save in nine tries.

A's starter Chris Bassitt (1-1) allowed three runs, walked one and had nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.

INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 0, 5 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco held Chicago to two hits, Jordan Luplow hit his first two home runs of the season and Cleveland won in a game called after five innings following a rain delay of 2 hours, 34 minutes.

Chicago right fielder Charlie Tilson slipped and fell on the wet grass in the fifth as he camped under a fly ball hit by Francisco Lindor that landed for an RBI double. The play capped a three-run inning and the game was stopped a few minutes later.

Carrasco (3-3) struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He gave up an infield hit to Jose Abreu in the first before retiring the next nine hitters. Yonder Alonso doubled with two outs in the fourth, but Carrasco struck out James McCann to end an 11-pitch at-bat.

Luplow hit solo homers in the second and fifth off Manny Banuelos (2-2) as Cleveland split the four-game series.

ASTROS 4, RANGERS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Josh Reddick hit the tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning and preserved the lead with a leaping grab over the wall in right field in the ninth, and Wade Miley struck out seven as Houston beat Texas for its fifth victory in six games.

The Rangers led off the ninth with a walk by Shin-Soo Choo, followed by a single from Elvis Andrus. Roberto Osuna struck out Nomar Mazara and Reddick robbed Hunter Pence of a possible go-ahead home run with a leaping grab over wall. Osuna struck out Joey Gallo to earn his ninth save.

Springer hit a solo homer in the third and Pence had a two-run shot in the fourth.

Miley (3-2) allowed two runs on two hits in six innings.

Mike Minor (3-3) gave up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

CARINALS 17, PIRATES 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna drove in four runs and Dexter Fowler had three RBIs, leading St. Louis to a rout of Pittsburgh.

Paul Goldschmidt reached base four times and had three hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who managed just one run in their previous 21 innings but bounced back with 16 hits and recorded a season high in runs.

St. Louis, which won for just the second time in eight games, sent nine or more batters to the plate three times over the first six innings.

The 17-run output is the most for the Cardinals since an 18-5 win over the Chicago Cubs on July 20, 2018.

Gregory Polanco homered and drove in three runs for the Pirates, who lost their second in a row.

Michael Wacha (3-0) allowed four runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Joe Musgrove (1-4) lasted just three innings for Pirates, giving up eight runs and six hits.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

? Iona College is getting $6M in renovations to its basketball arena.

? Hard to believe, but Washington is 1-7 this season when Max Scherzer starts.

? Mariners started the season 13-2, are now 20-20.

? Arizona Cardinals signed QB Kyler Murray to a 4-year, $35M deal.

? Have they announced which NFL team is going to be on Hard Knocks this summer?

? RIP Jim Fowler, 89, Marlon Perkins? sidekick on Wild Kingdom, the old TV show about animals all over the world.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Albert Pujols got his 2,000th career RBI when he homered Thursday in Detroit. 1,029 of his 2,000 RBI have come via home runs.

A 33-year old law student caught Pujols? historic home run, but refused four offers to sell the keepsake baseball back to Pujols? both the Tigers/Angels made multiple offers to the guy.

?I don?t want money. I don?t care.? Alrighty then.

12) Pretty fitting that Billy Joel spent his 70th birthday doing a concert in Madison Square Garden; that must?ve been a great night.

Long time ago, back in the 90?s sometime, Billy Joel booked a couple of concerts here in Albany- they sold out in about a half hour. They added a couple more dates- they sold out, too. Don?t remember the exact number, but pretty sure he wound up with 8-10 concerts here that month, all sellouts. I went to one of them, just a terrific show.

11) Every baseball telecast should announce which umpires are in the replay center in New York City. Gary Cohen does it sometimes on Met games; never heard anyone else do it.

10) South Carolina appears ready to offer $120M in tax breaks to the Carolina Panthers to move their practice fields and team headquarters out of North Carolina, and into the Palmetto State.

Rock Hill, SC is only 15 miles from Charlotte, which is what makes all this feasible.

Must be nice to be rich; people line up to give you even more money.

9) Westgate SuperBook took 46 bets on Tony Romo to win the Byron Nelson at 10,000/1; he shot a 5-over par 76 in the first round Thursday, even with an eagle on one hole.

8) 76ers 112, Raptors 101? Game 7 is in Toronto Sunday.

Trailblazers 119, Nuggets 108? Game 7 is in Denver Sunday.

7) Baseball injuries:
? Giants put C Buster Posey on 7-day concussion list.
? Mets put P Steven Matz on the IL.

6) Watching Rangers-Astros game, being played in a dome, but there are open spaces in the walls in left-center field and it was pouring rain in Houston, so when they showed pitches from the centerfield camera, you could see a steady downpour of rain that wasn?t coming down on the field, but some of the fans were getting drenched.

5) Wednesday night, Orioles lost a tough 2-1 game in 12 innings to Boston; saw something in the boxscore that I don?t think I?ve seen before.

Baltimore hitters struck out 22 times, with zero walks. Thats really terrible.

Jackie Bradley Jr made an amazing catch to rob Mancini of a homer that would?ve ended the game. Tremendous catch.

4) Doug Eddings has umpired home plate in seven games this season; the underdog won all seven games.

3) Minnesota Twins? new replay coordinator Nate Dammann spent the last 12 years as one of their bullpen catchers, an interesting change/upgrade in career.

2) Astros 4, Rangers 2? Hunter Pence has 17 RBI in his last nine games for Texas.

1) NFL recently cut $20M from the NFL Network budget less than two years from a potential work stoppage, which may be a bad omen for the 2021 season taking place.

Friday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Cubs (10-1 last 11)

Following a rough start to the season, Chicago has captured seven consecutive series, including posting a 6-1 record on its current homestand against St. Louis and Miami. The Cubs lost the opener to the Marlins, 6-5, but allowed a total of five runs in the final three victories, while improving to 5-1 in the past six series finales.

Chicago hooks up with rival Milwaukee on Friday afternoon as the Brewers took two of the first three meetings at Miller Park last month. In Milwaukee?s previous trip to Wrigley Field, the Brewers knocked off the Cubs to clinch the NL Central title in Game #163 by a 3-1 score last October. Jose Quintana leads the Cubs with four victories, while allowing seven runs in his last five starts since getting knocked around for eight runs in a 13-10 defeat at Milwaukee on April 5.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (2-8 last 10)

Toronto has been by far the most inconsistent team in Major League Baseball this season. The Jays started 5-11, but won nine of the next 12 games, which included a pair of sweeps against Oakland. However, Toronto is back to its early season woes by dropping eight of its past nine games, including getting swept at home by Minnesota as the Twins outscored the Jays, 20-1.

The Blue Jays will try to atone for that sweep as they face another AL Central squad with the White Sox traveling north of the border this weekend. Clay Buchholz has yet to register a victory in five starts for Toronto, while the Jays are 0-3 in his past three trips to the mound. In the right-hander?s last start, Buchholz was tagged for seven runs in four innings of a 10-2 loss at Texas this past Sunday.

Hottest pitcher: Tyler Glasnow, Rays (6-0, 1.47 ERA)

Blake Snell captured the AL Cy Young award last season, but another member of the Rays? rotation is the early leader for the honor in 2019. Glasnow owns underdog victories against the Astros and Red Sox, while Tampa Bay is 4-0 in his four road outings this season. The most recent win came last Friday at Baltimore as Glasnow tossed seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 shutout as a -230 favorite. Glasnow has seen the UNDER cash in four straight outings, as he faces the Yankees for the first time since getting dealt from Pittsburgh last season.

Coldest pitcher: Anibal Sanchez, Nationals (0-5, 5.15 ERA)

Washington won two of Sanchez?s first three starts this season, but the Nationals are 0-4 in his past four trips to the mound. Sanchez has not pitched past the fifth inning in any of his last three starts, but did strike out a season-high nine batters in a 7-1 loss at Philadelphia last Sunday. Washington is 5-1 to the UNDER in Sanchez?s past six starts, as the Nationals have put up three runs or fewer five times in this span. The Nationals continue their series with the Dodgers in Los Angeles, looking to hand L.A. its second loss in the last six Game 2?s at Chavez Ravine this season.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (7-0 last seven)

Colorado is returning to its old ways of high-scoring affairs at Coors Field. The Rockies have drilled the OVER in all five games on their current homestand against the Diamondbacks and Giants, while outlasting San Francisco, 12-11 on Thursday. Granted, the pitching hasn?t been great lately as the Rockies have allowed 51 runs in the last five games, including 25 in the past two contests against the Giants. Colorado welcomes in its third consecutive NL West foe as the Padres invade Denver this weekend. German Marquez may be able to keep this OVER streak going as the Rockies? right-hander owns a 5.87 ERA at Coors Field this season, while giving up five earned runs in six innings of an 8-7 win over Arizona last Sunday.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (6-3 last nine)

Philadelphia travels west in the Show-Me-State after grabbing two of three at St. Louis. The Phillies head to Kansas City for the lone interleague series this weekend following two terrific pitching performances by Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff. The two right-handers allowed a total of one run in the final two games following a 6-0 blowout loss to the Cardinals in the series opener. In the last six victories for Philadelphia, the pitching staff has yielded three runs or less, while hitting the UNDER in six straight series openers. Jake Arrieta takes the mound in the series opener as he is coming off a pair of high-scoring games in his past two outings, while giving up 12 runs in his last three starts.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Red Sox

Defending champion Boston has not owned a winning record this season nearly 40 games in. The Red Sox currently sit at 19-19 after capturing five of seven games on their road trip at Chicago and Baltimore. Boston outlasted Baltimore in 12 innings on Wednesday, 2-1 to win its third straight series as the Sox return home for an eight-game homestand featuring the Mariners, Rockies, and Astros.

The Mariners are also at .500, but Seattle once sat at 13-2 before posting a 7-18 record the last 25 contests. Seattle continues its difficult 10-game eastern swing against three playoff teams from 2018 as the Mariners dropped five of seven at Cleveland and New York. In the two wins, the M?s were fantastic offensively by scoring 21 runs, but lost three times by one run, while scoring only one run in the series finale in the Bronx on Thursday.

Seattle stunned Boston the first weekend of the season by stealing three of four from the Red Sox, while the M?s plated 28 runs in the three victories. Erik Swanson picked up his first career win his last time out in a 10-0 shutout of the Indians as the right-hander tossed six innings of one-hit ball. Southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez counters for Boston, as the Sox are 5-0 in his last five trips to the mound. Rodriguez lost to the Mariners at T-Mobile Park on March 30 as he allowed six runs in 4.1 innings of a 6-5 defeat.

Betcha didn?t know: Cincinnati remains in the Bay Area after blanking Oakland on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep. The Reds face the Giants in a series for the second time in a week as all four matchups at Great American Ballpark sailed OVER the total. Giants? right-hander Dereck Rodriguez takes the mound in the series opener as he is 0-3 at home this season, while getting knocked around by the Reds last Saturday in a 9-2 loss by allowing a season-high eight runs.
