Reds release '18 All-Star OF Kemp
May 4, 2019
By The Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) The Reds have released injured outfielder Matt Kemp just over four months after acquiring the 2018 All-Star from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cincinnati announced the move Saturday.

Kemp hit .200 with one homer and five RBIs before Cincinnati placed him on the injured list April 23 with a broken left rib. Kemp was injured colliding with an outfield wall in San Diego.

The 34-year-old was among four players acquired from Los Angeles in a seven-player trade in December along with outfielder Yasiel Puig, infielder Kyle Farmer and left-hander Alex Wood. Kemp is in the final season of a $160 million, eight-year contract.

The Reds also optioned OF Scott Schebler to Triple-A Louisville and recalled LHP Cody Reed from Louisville. Schebler was hitting .123 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 30 games and had lost his starting job to top prospect Nick Senzel, who made his major league debut Friday.

d'Arnaud thanks Mets fans after release
May 4, 2019
By STATS LLC Editorial

A day after the New York Mets released him, catcher Travis d'Arnaud thanked the team's fans on social media Saturday afternoon.

"It's been an amazing journey to be a Met. All the highs and the lows have made me into the person I am today," d'Arnaud posted. "Thank you for welcoming a California kid into your city and treating me like family. I hope nothing but the best for the organization, staff, fans, and most importantly my teammates. Thank you for everything. I will forever be grateful."

The Mets designated him for assignment last Sunday.

Coming back from Tommy John surgery, the 30-year-old veteran hit .087 in 10 games with just two singles and two RBIs in 25 plate appearances.

Since making his debut with the Mets in 2013, d'Arnaud batted .242 with 47 homers and 164 RBIs in 407 career games.

A first-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, d'Arnaud was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 and then dealt to the Mets in 2012 in the same trade that landed All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard in exchange for pitcher R.A. Dickey.

He was playing this season on a one-year, $3.5 million contract.

Marte's walk-off homer in 13th lifts Pirates over A's
May 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) Pinch-hitter Hunter Renfroe hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning off Kenley Jansen to give the San Diego Padres a thrilling 8-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Renfroe drove an 0-1 pitch into a balcony on the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner. He dropped his bat and raised his arms before beginning his trot.

The Padres, who avoided a three-game sweep, started the winning rally with three straight singles off Jansen (2-1), who was trying for his third save in three games. Eric Hosmer hit a leadoff single to left and Manuel Margot and Wil Myers followed with bunt singles to load the bases. Jansen struck out Greg Garcia and got rookie Francisco Mejia to pop up before Renfroe's slam.

Adam Warren (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

CUBS 13, CARDINALS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant hit his fourth career grand slam in Chicago's six-run eighth inning and the Cubs pounded St. Louis for their season-high seventh consecutive victory.

Willson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo and David Bote each drove in two runs, helping the Cubs leapfrog the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central. Ben Zobrist had two hits and made two nice plays in left field as Chicago completed a three-game sweep.

Since opening the season with eight losses in 11 games, the Cubs have won 16 of 20.

Paul DeJong and Marcell Ozuna homered in the ninth for St. Louis, which lost its season-high fourth straight. Adam Wainwright (3-3) allowed five runs and five hits in five-plus innings.

Jose Quintana (4-1) permitted two runs in six innings.

ASTROS 10, ANGELS 4

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Alex Bregman hit a grand slam, his third homer during a two-game series in Mexico, and Houston blew out Los Angeles for the second straight day.

The Astros, who won 14-2 on Saturday, hit eight home runs in front of pro-Houston crowds at Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey. On Sunday, Carlos Correa had a two-run homer in the second inning and Michael Brantley hit a two-run shot in the ninth.

Bregman greeted Cam Bedrosian, who relieved starter Matt Harvey with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, by blasting a 2-0 fastball to the batter's eye in center field. Harvey (1-3) was charged with five runs on five hits.

Justin Verlander (5-1) allowed homers in each of the first two innings but rebounded with four scoreless frames. He was lifted with one out in the seventh after Jonathan Lucroy took him deep for the second time.

PIRATES 5, ATHLETICS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Starling Marte hit a game-ending three-run homer in the 13th inning, rallying Pittsburgh past Oakland after the Athletics scored twice in the top of the inning.

Cole Tucker started Pittsburgh's comeback with a one-out single off Fernando Rodney (0-2). Jung Ho Kang walked and Adam Frazier drove in Tucker with a single before Marte drilled a ball out to center.

Tyler Lyons (1-0) got the win despite struggling in his Pirates debut. After pitching a 1-2-3 12th, he walked the first two batters in the 13th and allowed an RBI single to Kendrys Morales and a run-scoring double to Stephen Piscotty before getting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit to hit into an inning-ending double play.

A's slugger Khris Davis, last year's major league home run leader, left in the second inning with a left hip bruise after crashing into the left field wall chasing a popup.

The Pirates are above .500 at 16-15 for the first time since April 25.

BREWERS 3, METS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich homered in his return to the lineup and Zach Davies pitched into the eighth inning as Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of New York.

Yelich, the NL MVP, was back in the starting lineup after missing five consecutive games with low back soreness. He hit a two-run, 440-foot homer off Jason Vargas (1-2) that caromed off the third deck in right and gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

With its bullpen depleted, the Brewers got a much-needed performance from Davies (4-0), who gave up six hits and two runs in 7 2/3 innings while throwing a season-high 118 pitches.

Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save.

YANKEES 4, TWINS 1, 8 INNINGS, RAIN

NEW YORK (AP) - Domingo German kept delivering on a wet, raw afternoon, tying for the major league lead with his sixth win as New York stopped Minnesota.

Mike Tauchman hit a two-run homer to help New York win for the 11th time in 15 games. The Twins lost two of three after coming into Yankee Stadium this weekend with the best record in the majors.

It was 51 degrees, windy and damp at gametime, and the start was pushed back three hours in advance to avoid an expected storm. Still, rain fell for most of the day and pelted the park hard in the late innings before the game was halted.

German (6-1) stayed in control, giving up one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven.

Aroldis Chapman fanned Marwin Gonzalez with two on to finish the eighth, and got his seventh save in eight chances.

Michael Pineda (2-3) struck out eight in five inconsistent innings.

RED SOX 9, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in Boston's seven-run eighth inning against Chicago.

Mitch Moreland went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez each had an RBI single as Boston won for the sixth time in seven games to move within a game of .500 at 17-18.

Jose Abreu and Ryan Cordell each had a solo homer for Chicago, which has dropped three straight.

Kelvin Herrera (0-2) began the disastrous eighth inning for the White Sox. Brandon Workman (2-1) worked a scoreless seventh to get the win.

TIGERS 5, ROYALS 2, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Brandon Dixon hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift Detroit over Kansas City.

Nicholas Castellanos started the 10th with an infield single off Ian Kennedy (0-1), and after Miguel Cabrera popped out, Niko Goodrum reached on another infield hit. Ronny Rodriguez struck out, and then Dixon hit a 1-2 curveball over the fence in right-center field for his first career walk-off homer.

Buck Farmer (2-2) got the win after retiring the last batter in the top of the 10th.

MARINERS 10, INDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Erik Swanson didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning and got his first win, and Jay Bruce blasted a grand slam as Seattle snapped a six-game losing streak.

Making his fourth career start, Swanson (1-3) lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth when Cleveland's Jose Ramirez doubled.

Swanson was pulled after six innings and 106 pitches. Brendon Brennan, Mike Wright and Zac Rosscup completed the combined two-hitter.

Bruce homered in the first off Cody Anderson (0-1), Mitch Haniger hit a solo shot in the second and Edwin Encarnacion belted a two-run homer in fifth.

RANGERS 10, BLUE JAYS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor and Asdrubal Cabrera each homered and combined for seven RBIs, and Texas rolled past Toronto.

Drew Smyly came off the injured list to hold Toronto to one run and two hits in four innings in his first game since April 19. He had been sidelined with mid-arm nerve tightness.

Kyle Dowdy (2-1) entered the game to start the fifth with a 7-1 lead and pitched two scoreless innings.

Clay Buchholz (0-2) allowed seven runs in four innings, falling to 0-5 in his career at Texas.

PHILLIES 7, NATIONALS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings and Rhys Hoskins drove in a pair of runs to lead Philadelphia past Washington.

Cesar Hernandez added two doubles for the NL East-leading Phillies, who have won six of nine.

Kurt Suzuki homered for the third straight day for Washington, which has lost eight of 11.

Eflin (4-3) gave up one run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Anibal Sanchez (0-5) allowed two unearned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

ROCKIES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 7

DENVER (AP) - Raimel Tapia hit a tying, bases-loaded triple and scored the go-ahead run during a five-run eighth inning, and Colorado beat Arizona.

The rally salvaged the finale of the three-game series and ended Arizona's six-game road winning streak. Eduardo Escobar and Blake Swihart homered for the Diamondbacks.

The Rockies trailed 7-3 when they loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Archie Bradley (1-3).

Scott Oberg (1-0) allowed two runs in the eighth but got the win, and Wade Davis got the final three outs for his fifth save. It was just the sixth win in 15 home games for the Rockies.

GIANTS 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Crawford delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to help San Francisco erase a four-run first-inning deficit and beat Cincinnati.

Crawford's two-run shot lifted the Giants after Cincinnati homered on three straight pitches by starter Jeff Samardzija in the first.

Buster Posey hit a tying, three-run homer in the sixth and opened the ninth with a one-out double against Raisel Iglesias (1-5). Crawford followed with his second career pinch-hit homer deep into the right field seats, lifting the Giants to their third win in four games.

Tony Watson (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth to support the comeback. Will Smith worked around Kyle Farmer's first career pinch-hit homer with two outs to earn his ninth save in nine tries.

BRAVES 3, MARLINS 1, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Ender Inciarte faked a bunt and instead slapped an opposite-field RBI double down the line to break a 10th-inning tie, and Atlanta completed a three-game sweep at Miami.

Nick Markakis' home run gave Atlanta a lead in the seventh, but the Marlins tied it with three consecutive singles in the eighth off Josh Tomlin (1-0).

Tayron Guerrero (1-1) walked pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson to start the 10th. Inciarte then squared to bunt but instead shot a grounder into the left-field corner, and pinch-running pitcher Max Fried slid home when the relay throw bounced away from catcher Chad Wallach.

Ballpark Figures - Week 7
Joe Williams

Central Battle

The Cleveland Indians (18-14) square off against the Chicago White Sox (14-18), and it's RHP Ivan Nova against RHP Trevor Bauer in what should be a pretty solid pitching matchup. The White Sox enter play with a 4-0 record in their past four series openers, although they're just 12-25 across the past 37 games against right-handed starting pitchers and they're 7-15 across the past 22 road games. The Indians are 8-3 in the past 11 games at home, while going 5-1 in their past six against right-handed starting pitchers. In addition, they're 38-16 in the past 54 home games vs. RHP.

They've struggled with Nova on the hill, as the White Sox are 1-5 over his past six outings, while going 0-4 in his past four on the road. They're also 1-5 in his past six games on a grass surface. For the Indians, they have won 11 of the past 15 starts by Bauer, and they're 10-4 in his past 14 assignments at Progressive Field. Cleveland has also won eight of their past 11 games at home, and they're 5-1 in the past six series openers, too. The Tribe have cashed in seven of the past nine starts by Bauer against AL Central foes.

In this series, the Indians are 4-0 in the past four home outings by Bauer against the White Sox, and they're 5-2 in the past seven starts overall against Chicago. The White Sox are a dismal 17-36 across the past 53 battles at Progressive Field, while going 18-38 in the past 56 meetings overall. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings, although the under is 3-0-1 in the past four starts by Bauer against the White Sox. The under is 15-7-1 in the past 23 starts overall by Bauer, and 20-5-1 in his past 26 starts against AL Central foes.

Looking Ahead

Monday, May 6

The Mariners and Yankees lock horns at New York, and this would have been a great pitching matchup a few years ago. Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez has tailed off a bit in the velocity department in the past couple of years, and he has to try and deceive batters with offspeed stuff and location. The M's are just 3-8 over his past 11 starts on the road, and 4-12 in the past 16 overall. They're also 7-20 in his past 27 tries against teams with a winning overall mark. New York has won four of the past five at home, and 10 of the past 14 overall. They're also 5-2 in the past seven starts by Sabathia, while the Yankees are 26-9 in the past 35 starts at home by CC. The under is 6-0 in New York's past six starts by Sabathia against the M's, with the under 4-1 in his past five outings by Hernandez against the Yanks. The Yankees are also 13-4 in CC's past 17 vs. Seattle, with the M's 1-5 in Hernandez's past six against the Bronx Bombers. The M's have also dropped five straight games at Yankee Stadium.

The Braves and Dodgers square off in Chavez Ravine, and the Braves are 5-2 across their past seven on the road and 5-2 in the past seven overall. And, for what it's worth, they're 11-3 in the past 14 games on a Monday. However, Atlanta is also a dismal 3-7 in their past 10 against NL West foes, and 2-5 in the past seven series openers. For L.A., they have rattled off seven victories in the past nine outings, while cashing in 23 of their past 31 overall. Los Angeles has also cashed in four straight against winning teams. One area of concern for bettors, watch the status of 1B-OF Cody Bellinger, as he has missed the past two games due to a sore shoulder.

The Mets and Padres square off at Petco Park to kick off a new series, and we'll get a great pitching matchup between RHP Jacob deGrom and RHP Chris Paddack. The Mets have dropped seven of their past 10 heading into play, and they're 0-4 in the past four games on the road, too. In addition, they're 0-4 in the past four against teams with a winning overall record. Perhaps even more surprising, they're 0-4 in the past four starts by deGrom. For the Padres, they're 2-5 in the past seven overall, and 3-7 in the past 10 at home. However, they're 7-2 in the past nine games against right-handed starting pitching, and they're 5-1 in Paddack's past six starts. In this series, the over is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings, and 19-7-2 in the past 28 battles at Petco.

Weather Report

The Marlins and Cubs will tangle at Wrigley Field, and the teams will be facing a 9-12 mph wind blowing in from left-center field to home plate. Thankfully, that will be the only MLB venue which will be affected by wind factors, and the forecast calls for a 20 percent or less chance of precipitation across all parks.

Tuesday, May 7

Marlins LHP Caleb Smith has been a bright spot in an otherwise dreary start for the Marlins. He is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 36 innings across six starts, recording 45 strikeouts while issuing just nine walks. The Cubs have managed a 4-3 record against the Marlins so far this season. The Marlins will be facing LHP Jon Lester, and they're just 1-6 this season in seven tries against southpaws.

The Twins roll out RHP Jose Berrios against Blue Jays RHP Aaron Sanchez. The Twins have posted seven straight road wins against teams with a losing overall mark, and they're 6-1 in the past seven vs. RHP. They're also 17-5 across the past 22 games against teams with a losing overall record. For the Jays, they have won six straight home outings by Sanchez, while cashing in 11 of his past 16 starts overall. They're also 4-1 in the past five starts against AL Central foes. Minnesota has won four straight at Rogers Centre in Toronto, but they're 26-56 in the past 82 meetings overall. The over is also 8-3 in the past 11 meetings in Canada.

It's a battle of southpaws in L.A. when LHP Max Fried and the Braves face LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers in Game 2 of their series. Fried puts his 4-1 record, 2.11 ERA and .257 opponent on-base percentage on the line. He has recorded quality starts in five of his past six outings, including just one earned run allowed, four hits and seven strikeouts with no walks over seven innings in a victory against the Padres. The Braves are 2-2 in Fried's four outings against NL West teams this season. The Dodgers are just 1-3 across Ryu's past four outings, although he has quality starts in each of his past two outings, allowing just three earned runs across the past 15 innings. He lost a hard-luck start in San Francisco on May 1, allowing one earned run over eight innings in a loss.

Weather Report

In the White Sox-Indians battle at Progressive Field, the teams will be facing a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from right field. The Marlins and Cubs will be facing a strong 11-14 mph wind gusting in from the left-center field to home plate, keeping run totals down.

As far as rain is concerned, the Mariners and Yankees will be facing 30-40 percent chance of rain from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., so the starting pitchers might be able to go, but it wouldn't be surprising to see a lengthy delay, and the bullpens finishing things up. It's best to avoid the situation.

Wednesday, May 8

Rangers RHP Shelby Miller is listed as the starter, and that's good news for the Pirates in their matinee affair. Miller is 1-2 with a 7.99 ERA and .417 opposing on-base percentage, and he has walked 20 batters while striking out just 13 over 23 2/3 innings. He has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his past five outings while failing to last longer than 5 1/3 innings in any one outing. As such, look for the 'over' to occur. The over is 3-0-1 over his past four outings, and 4-1-1 in his six starts this season.

The Red Sox and Orioles hook up in Charm City. LHP Chris Sale finally got his first win of the season in his old stomping grounds against the Chicago White Sox, and he has back-to-back outings with at least six innings while posting quality starts in each other. He has also struck out 26 over the past 18 innings, as it looks like he has his mojo back after a rough start. The O's roll with RHP Andrew Cashner, who is 4-1 despite a 4.71 ERA and .335 OBP across 36 1/3 innings. He was smacked around for five runs - four earned - and six hits with eight strikeouts over four innings in a no-decision against the Pale Hose on May 1. He actually beat the Red Sox in Fenway Park on April 13, cashing as a +225 underdog. The 'over ' is also 5-0 in the past five starts for Cashner.

STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Chris Paddack, San Diego Padres (2-1, 1.91 ERA, $343):
The Padres rookie has been absolutely sensational so far in his debut season. Despite making six starts he's coming off his first two wins after three no-decisions to start the year. Paddack has allowed just 14 hits through 33 innings this season, holding opponents to a batting average of .126 with a WHIP of 0.70. Tonight he has a pitching duel with Mets ace Jacob deGrom (more on him later), with the Friars as slim underdogs at +109. San Diego is 5-1 in Paddack's six starts.

SLUMPING

Ivan Nova, Chicago White Sox (0-3, 8.33 ERA, $-445):
Nova started the year with two good performances against the Yankees and Indians in his first three starts, it's been all downhill from there. In his last three starts he's allowed 31 hits and 20 earned runs in 16 innings. In the last two games, a home and away against the Orioles, he gave up six homers and 14 runs in 9.2 innings.

Today, Nova and the White Sox are on the road against Cleveland and ace Trevor Bauer. Tribe batters have hit .379 with and OBP of .446 in 66 at bats against Nova and the White Sox are priced as +210 underdogs.

3 STRIKES

DEGROM DAY!

It?s no secret: ?Jacob deGrom Day? is pretty much a weekly holiday in the Covers offices, with the Mets starter cashing in for first-five inning Under bettors in 26 of his last 32 starts.

That sterling record includes a bounce-back effort versus the Cincinnati Reds on May 1, in which he allowed just three hits and walked two through seven innings in a 1-0 New York loss. The right hander failed to come through for ?deGrom Day? faithful in the start prior, serving up five runs through four innings and watching seven total innings hit the board in the opening five frames.

Today?s matchup sees the Mets in San Diego with deGrom facing off against the previously mentioned Paddack, with the full-game total dropping from seven runs to 6.5. The first-five inning Over/Under is on the board at 3.5 runs with the Under priced at -160. You?ve got to ride this top trend until the wheels fall off.

SHAKY BLAKEY

Reigning American League Cy Young winner Blake Snell hasn?t looked like an elite arm in his recent outings for the Tampa Bay Rays. The left hander is coming off a rotten effort, giving up seven runs on six hits through just three innings versus Kansas City last Wednesday.

Snell has pitched a combined 6 1-3 innings in his last two starts since returning from a broken toe and takes on an Arizona Diamondbacks team that scored a combined 25 runs in their three-game set with the Colorado Rockies this weekend.

After allowing just 16 home runs in 2018, Snell has served up six dingers already this year, including three in his last four starts. Arizona sits sixth in the majors in home runs with 50 on the season. Today?s total is set at 7.5 runs.

LIVE BET LATE FIREWORKS

The Chicago Cubs are pricy home favorites hosting the Miami Marlins tonight. And while Cubbies bettors may sweat the early innings, don?t be surprised if Chicago breaks things open late in the game. Miami enters this week as the third-worst bullpen in the majors, lugging a collective 5.85 ERA into Monday.

The Marlins have allowed an average of 2.33 runs over the final three innings in their previous three outings and run into a Chicago lineup plating an average of 1.68 runs over that same span on the season ? fourth most ? including nine total runs between the seventh and ninth inning during the Cubs? weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

For those following the live total at home ? and banking on Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara not to go deep, much like he?s failed to do this season ? you could get great value on the in-game Over heading into the late innings.

LEADING OFF: Scherzer on rare skid, Sabathia vs Felix in NY
May 5, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

SCHERZER SKID

Washington has lost each of Max Scherzer's last four starts, the longest such stretch for the three-time Cy Young winner since 2015. Scherzer hasn't started five straight team losses since the 2009-10 seasons, a six-start skid that spanned his trade from Arizona to Detroit. He faces Milwaukee, which is coming off a three-game sweep of the Mets.

STILL CHUCKING

A couple past-their-prime aces square off at Yankee Stadium with New York LHP CC Sabathia facing Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez. Sabathia (1-1, 2.66) recorded his 3,000th career strikeout in his previous outing. Hernandez (1-2, 4.31) has rebounded a bit from a lousy 2018, walking just four over 31 1/3 innings this season. The banged-up Yankees may get OF Clint Frazier (sprained ankle) off the injured list.

RED HOT RED SOX

Red Sox hitters are suddenly slugging. Boston piled up 30 runs over its final three games against the White Sox this weekend, and now the Red Sox get to swing against Baltimore's struggling pitching staff. The Orioles entered Sunday with a major league-worst 5.74 ERA, allowing 75 homers - 19 more than the next highest total. Boston (17-18) has a chance to get back to .500 following a miserable start to the season.

SAN DIEGO SLAM

A day after Hunter Renfroe's pinch-hit grand slam sank the Dodgers in the bottom of the ninth, the Padres open a series against the Mets by taking on NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. Renfroe's shot against Kenley Jansen prevented a three-game sweep against rival LA. Now San Diego hopes standout rookie RHP Chris Paddack (2-1, 1.91) can hang with deGrom, who returned to form last time out after struggling amid elbow issues and a bout of strep throat.

Mets acquire power righty Font from Rays
May 6, 2019
By STATS LLC Editorial

Wilmer Font, a hard-throwing right-handed reliever, was traded Monday from the Tampa Bay Rays to the New York Mets for a player to be named later.

Font posted a 5.79 ERA in 10 appearances with the Rays this season and his career ERA is 6.51 in 37 games over 65 innings.

Font allowed 15 hits and nine runs in 14 innings with the Rays in 2019.

The Mets needed a boost due to injuries in the bullpen. The latest hit came Sunday, when left-hander Luis Avilan landed on the injured list with an elbow injury.

Font, 28, has also pitched for the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics.

Snell shuts down D-Backs, Pham hits grand slam as Rays roll
May 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell took a perfect game into the sixth inning and Tommy Pham hit his first career grand slam, leading the Tampa Bay Rays over the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-1 on Monday night.

Snell (3-3) rebounded from allowing a career-high seven runs over three innings of an 8-2 loss at Kansas City last week to hold the Diamondbacks without a hit until Ildemaro Vargas singled with two outs in the sixth. Snell got out of the inning and finished with nine strikeouts in an 83-pitch outing.

Chaz Roe relieved to start the seventh and Casey Sadler allowed an unearned run in the ninth to finish a two-hitter before 8,124, the lowest at Tropicana Field since September 2017.

Pham's grand slam off Merrill Kelly (3-3) finished a five-run second inning that put the AL East leaders up 6-0.

WHITE SOX 9, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Tim Anderson chased Trevor Bauer after the All-Star tweeted a playful message to Anderson earlier in the day, Yoan Moncada had a two-run homer and four RBIs, and Chicago routed Cleveland to stop a three-game losing streak.

Bauer (4-2) matched career highs by allowing eight runs and seven earned runs in five-plus innings, and his ERA rose from 2.45 to 3.42.

Anderson chased Bauer with a two-run single in the sixth.

Ivan Nova (1-3) allowed one run and eight hits in seven innings for his first win since beating Milwaukee for Pittsburgh on Sept. 21.

REDS 12, GIANTS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Nick Senzel hit a leadoff homer after a swarm of bees finally left home plate, and the rookie connected again his next time up, leading Cincinnati past San Francisco.

The wild game included a record-tying four Reds getting plunked in one inning. Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval pitched the eighth and also hit a batter.

The first pitch was delayed 18 minutes as bees swarmed above the backstop screen, prompting umpires and players to keep a safe distance before the bees flew away.

Senzel connected on the second pitch by Drew Pomeranz (1-4) and homered again in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

Anthony DeSclafani (2-1) gave up four runs, including Sandoval's three-run homer, in six innings.

YANKEES 7, MARINERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - New York pounced on Seattle's Felix Hernandez, building a big cushion for CC Sabathia in a showdown of acclaimed veterans.

Luke Voit, Brett Gardner and Thairo Estrada homered off Hernandez while New York gave Sabathia a 6-0 lead after two innings and held on for its 12th win in 16 games. Hernandez (1-3) settled in after that, completing five innings of seven-run ball.

Domingo Santana and Dee Gordon homered off Sabathia (2-1), but the oversized lefty limited Seattle to three runs over five innings.

BREWERS 5, NATIONALS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A long night and day of travel for Washington got even worse when it wasted a pair of leads, made four errors and lost to Milwaukee.

The Nationals' charter flight was delayed eight hours as the plane sat on the tarmac at Philadelphia because of mechanical problems Sunday night. They finally got off the plane about 3 a.m. and returned to their hotel, then headed to Milwaukee on Monday and arrived after noon.

Ben Gamel, Christian Yelich and Yasmani Grandal hit consecutive singles off Dan Jennings (0-2) starting the seventh, with Grandal driving in the tying run.

Alex Claudio (1-1) won despite allowing a home run by Adam Eaton that put Washington ahead 3-2 in the seventh.

Junior Guerra struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save.

TWINS 8, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Martin Perez and two relievers combined on a three-hitter, Eddie Rosario hit his AL-leading 12th home run and Minnesota blanked Toronto.

Jason Castro homered and had three RBIs before leaving with a sore right elbow after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning.

Perez (5-0) won his fourth straight start. The left-hander allowed two hits, both singles, in seven innings, his second straight scoreless outing.

Rosario chased Marcus Stroman (1-5) with a two-out solo drive in the fifth.

CARDINALS 6, PHILLIES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Miles Mikolas pitched seven stellar innings and Yadier Molina hit one of three home runs as St. Louis beat Philadelphia.

Matt Carpenter and Paul DeJong also went deep as the Cardinals snapped a four-game skid. Mikolas (4-2) allowed only three hits in his second-longest outing this season.

John Brebbia and Jordan Hicks finished the five-hitter.

The Cardinals chased starter Vince Velasquez (1-2) in the fifth when he gave up two homers sandwiched around a single. He allowed five runs on four hits and five walks.

ORIOLES 4, RED SOX 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jonathan Villar hit a grand slam, John Means handcuffed Boston's torrid offense over seven innings and Baltimore beat Boston.

Villar connected in the second inning off Josh Smith (0-1), who was making his first start with Boston. The drive came after Villar was robbed of a first-inning double when a fan reached over the 7-foot wall and interfered with left fielder J.D. Martinez's effort to make a catch.

Villar's second career slam was more than enough support for Means (4-3), who allowed one run and three hits, striking out four and walking none.

ASTROS 6, ROYALS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer, Carlos Correa and Robinson Chirinos each homered to lead Houston past Kansas City.

Springer opened the first with his 11th home run of the season, including three leadoff drives. He added an RBI double in the eighth.

Gerrit Cole (3-4) yielded four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Jakob Junis (3-3) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
